Jimmy Ong Talk to Her (2013) Happening, residual installation
With the assistance of Makcik Tamara, Ong created two Makcik styled living rooms on the terrace of the gallery. Each day, one or two makcik collaborators will be present to talk to anyone. Each makcik collaborator becomes the hostess, or the homeowner. Anyone who enters the living room becomes her guest. During each encounter, both the hostess and the guest are granted at least three questions or 15 minutes to ask of each other.
With one-on-one dyad, Ong opens up a chance for people to know the makciks up close and personal. At the same time, Ong is also setting a neutral ground between the makciks and the public, attempting to void the existing social stigma surrounding the makciks for 15 minutes.
The questions asked by the guests of the living room will be accumulated and woven into the living room as a residual installation. Makcik presence will be announced. No photograph or audio recording in the Makcik Living Room

Makcik Project Episode #2 is a show that ended an art project called #makcikproject. Initiated in early 2012, the project begins by questioning a certain keywords such as collaboration, participatory, community art and socially-engaged (art) practices. Though #makcikproject clearly works with transgender women, this project did not develop their interest in gender-related issues. This project is experimenting on how art practices can be relevant in the daily lives of non-art community/(ies).

*************************************************
After presenting the three conversational games of breaking ice, I remind the makciks that the games are only relational devices and there are no rules except in harvesting questions from the participants for the exhibition (artist’s request in this collaboration).
In three separate spaces and random pairs of makcik and public, the tete-a-tete took on a life of its own. By appearance, each pairs look like old friends, not new acquaintance. The faces of the makciks light up as an engaged person beneath the makeups. It looks like a dating game, and i have to ring a bell to prompt the pairs to end in a minute, and then the bell again to move the participants into different coupling and talk space. Each makcik has had a run of talking to three different strangers within segments of 15 minutes. The makcik’s 15 minutes of fame.
In a quick review, the makciks have problems recalling what the public participants asked them, but lots to say about their advocacy of their social and economic issues that are as broken records for me now. The public is given an encounter of an earful of what I have experienced when I met the transgender women for the first time. I asked Ibu Mariane how if I could exhaust her if she has to tell the same story to 100 persons in a day? I need to ring the bell to end the chatter, Pak Rully the translator suggests that I demand from the makciks the questions the public asked of each of them. I remind myself a review with the makciks after an hour of encounters with strangers as necessary to check on their progress. But so far, they seems to not get enough of the public one-to-one.

Sewing Party? A day at Malioiboro to pick up the materials for curtains that Makcik Tamara chose and designed for The Living Room. Artist’s friends Dede Bastam and Mulyana assisted with the shopping recommendations and carrying 6kg of kapok. It rained, we were separated into chores but there was much laughter and fun.
