Well, I am a spirit based on the mortal ruling. Food is pretty much a part of me.
No, no, no. When I was a human, I would eat those things. The path to a non-materialistic life was to eat something without flavor, showing that you didn't need it. However, now that I have a child, things are a bit more sweet than normal.
"Hum..." The messenger raises an eyebrow and considers: "A spirit? You're not suggesting you're just like me and the rest of the human spirits...?" "I get eating for survival, although I normally just ate fruit from the trees a lot. I was from Brazil when I was alive; and the jungle was fairly abundant...but I don't think I've seen any starving spirits in the afterlife. I was under the impression it was all for pleasure rather than need..." She paused, thinking and then snapped her fingers; "Oh! Anyway, I completely forgot! I am Melosa! ----Or just Mel, if you please! If you ever need something delivered; message or parcel. I am at your service!" She curtsied, bending at the knee and sweeping one wing out in shallow bow.
Material things are thing you don't need. Like extra furniture, jewelry. Sweets are a delicacy that can be used to fixed hunger for a craving, plus it's all I eat, I need to eat something don't I?
"Do you need to eat? I've just been eating out of habit after I died, before that I had to eat a looooot---"
She waves a hand idly and then continues speaking with a small grin.
"Well anyway, you could be eating something more humble, hum? 'Delicacy' is almost the definition of something that isn't needed. If you're arguing that people should give up those things, shouldn't you be leading by example? Eating---I don't know. Beans? Potato's. Something bland and banal? Or is it just because you're a god?"

There's no need to be so offended, I didn't even begin to think that you even did open the box. A simple 'I don't know' would've done nicely, but you went and got your feathers in a tuff.

Mel puffed out a cheek indignantly; then slowly relaxed and unruffled her feathers. Letting her shoulders relax as well. "Right...Mis disculpas."
She smiled, moving hands to her hips and shaking her head. "I'd say it's not divine. There's plenty of divine things in this...afterlife. But that sort of thing, a letter from a kid? It's ordinary. That's what makes it special."

Hmm, who would've guessed that a child would send me an offering so cute.

She bristled a small bit, fluffing out her feathers and then slowly letting out a long exhale. "I do not wish to offend you Lord, but if you demand an answer...I take pride doing my job well. I did before I died as well." She frowned a bit and then opened her mouth; the next words mimicking Buddha's own back at him with nearly perfect affect, tone and cadence of his own voice only a minute ago: "I'm starting to think that you probably did, I just asked what was in the box"
She stopped parroting the words and scoffed softly: "I do not like the suggestion that I violated someone else's privacy and trust; it is fundamentally offensive. I am glad though...that you like your letter and pastry."

I like this one a lot. It's simple and not too extreme.
I don't like a lot of words. It seems too made up and fancy, the fewer words the be.
"....that would make sense Lord, it was a child's soul that ran up and handed me that letter." Go figure, he actually liked a childs letter, still she was giving him the same respectful tone she often used with the Gods.
"I imagine there's a great many humans who are grateful." Perhaps herself included, despite being offended previously.
Hmm~ I never did suspect that you opened it, but since you seem so offended, I'm starting to think that you probably did, I just asked what was in the box~.
He said, as he waved the package back and forth, shaking the contents within it, he then stopped shaking it, and he opened the box, a smile gracing his face.
Ooooo~ a cute little pastry, I love some good sweets.
He said, taking out the slightly beaten-up pastry and he took a good size chunk out of it.

Once he was done with the sweet treat he then held up the letter.
I hate letters, I prefer for the person to just tell me through their own mouth. It gets to the point quicker that way.
He said before he ripped open the letter.
That assumption ticked her off even more. She took her job very seriously and would never! But perhaps she should have just delivered the package without a word. Being a silent courier might have kept her out of trouble. "Very well Sir." She spoke evenly after taking a deeper breath and reigning in her aggravation. It wouldn't do any good to stand here and argue with him; He was a god wasn't he? She didn't need an enemy. Most of them were like this and she knew she should be used to this. They, the gods were going to think as they pleased and was unlikely to listen to a thing someone like her were to say anyway. "As you say Sir." She said simply as he opened the letter; not bothering to mention that there were some letters that meant more than the words committed to paper. From where she stood she could see that the one he got now had very few words in fact; a simply written thing likely, some colorful doodles and some pressed flowers.
Maybe the effort was a waste on the divine. Regardless, she simply stood by waiting to be dismissed; expecting to be waved away just like always.

She leans down and picks up the things she dropped and pockets them again. "I...haven't the foggiest...? I didn't open it, if that's what your suggesting. I don't go through people's mail. " She tilts her head and lifts and eyebrow; appearing perhaps just a tiny little bit offended. "I was only told to deliver it to you post haste. But I believe it was mentioned briefly that it might melt? So to open it immediately upon receipt..." She bounces on the balls of her feet anxiously and purses her lips; adding as respectfully as she can: "Not to question you Lord Buddha but...I'm not...sure shaking it was exactly the smartest thing to do." (100% someone send him a pastry with icing or something. God-fanmail. Gift? Offering? Something like that.)

However she’ll warm up to most anybody - especially if they have something to eat! She eats a lot! She is very diligent with her job; regardless of Soul, Spirit, God or Deity and will happily deliver any sort of package or message that she can carry!!!! Rat costumes! She giggled at the idea. Had she seen his rats in costumes? “Wait? Wait!!! I have to see them in costumes now! You have to show me later!” The topic of his ruana though seemed more serious. It held too many ‘thoughts’ and ‘memories’. She could only assume then it was a sentimental item. Something she hadn’t really seen him without. Even fixing the ‘broken’ parts of it would ruin the item as a whole for him? What would he do when it finally frayed and fell apart. She didn’t want to upset him though---she she smiled and nodded. “Alright. That’s fair. Anyway---it’s not all that bad. I was just curious.” “What sort of costumes do you need for the rats?” She dragged the topic back to the rats because it seemed like a safe - non upsetting topic. He loved his rats and his telenovelas!

when she took out the treats he smiled bit. yes, they loved treats and actually thats how he introduced himself to them to even start with. it was amazing and he loved it and he just. he was grinning wide with a glimmer in his eyes that said just as much. his excitement and the feeling of acceptance was amazing. but he was realizing his hands were full of rat and couldn’t take said treats. “ U-um. “ he laughed nervously, “ do you um, want to put the treats on the counter? I mean you could offer it to them but can’t promise they won’t nip or bite. not that they are biters so to speak you just can never be too careful. “
then the tea yes caffeine, “ I’m a caffeine addict as well. it helps to stay awake. “
Lovely little rats; healthy and happy and well taken care. She loved to see it! And clearly he loved them so much. “Rosa, Renny and Flora!~” She cooed as she looked over the little critters. “How do you come up with their names? Any particular reason...?” Did they mean something to him? Or random? “Would they take treats from me?” She questioned, seeing as his hands were busy. She moved the treats to hold them out on a flat palm. “It wouldn’t be the first time getting bit. I can guarantee you that macaw bites are worse!~” She had had worse nips and bites. Mel made sure she sure was close enough, and held still. “Caffeine is life!~” She noted, nodding with a small smirk. “How else would I avoid sleeping!~”

Bruno snickered, oh wow that was scary. she was beyond accurate. he sighed out slowly with a smile. she was great. great, and she was his ki — he blinked some more as he looked at her then looked away. scratching his arm as he was thinking some. he couldn’t call her that right? yeah no that would be awkward and just no… that wouldn’t be right. not in this moment it wouldn’t.
“ I mean, if someone comes to the Encanto like you did — “ he shurgged a bit, “ and if I fall for them I don’t know how my family would act. it’s all about eh… “ he moved his hand about. “ my family is very um… “ he furrowed his brows as he tried to think how to describe it. “ I don’t know how they would really react with an outsider. not fully. I honestly can’t remember. “ he confessed. “ I don’t know if we had anyone wander into the Encanto. I know it’s possible even before the mountains kinda split. I know it was possible for me to leave before then. but… “ there was a soft hm as he tried to put words together.
“I’m sure someone else will come here---” And maybe he’d luck out right? Maybe they’d be nice. He’d like them and her dear friend could have some luck. He’d really luck out for once. She liked him but he was like a father or an uncle to her. “I mean...” She winced a little and rolled her eyes. “I can see why people are wary of outsiders. I get it---but I’m sure your family would just be happy for you, right?” Right!? Surely if it meant Bruno’s happiness his mother, sisters and others wouldn’t stand in the way! Surely... “Have you thought about leaving the Encanto before? Like permanently?” Mel looked at him curiously. He had seemed happy about a vacation - so perhaps he had.

Mimicking him with scary accuracy. “’I’m Bruno and I make bad things happen.’ Come on---you’re great! You aren’t scary. Not at all.” She could understand the status thing though. The fact that people in the village would want the Madrigal name. But it was surprising that none of them ever bothered to just get to know Bruno... Surprising and painful. “...Well! You’re not dead yet! So I wouldn’t give up hope! You never know. I came here! Maybe someone else will!” Since---you know. He’d been around everyone in Encanto all his life and clearly that hadn’t worked out.

The stares...she didn’t even bother to stare back. She didn’t bother to address them. Mel wasn’t going to let some rude villagers ruin her good mood! They all knew by now that she was friendly with the local ‘bad luck’ Madrigal. Honestly she wanted them to get over it and look somewhere more interesting! The fact that outside the Encanto nobody would know about Bruno’s gift was surely enticing. Surely something to look forward to for him - especially when people’s eyes followed him everywhere here. Sure it would take some planning - but it could be a wonderful vacation from all of this. Somewhere there would be nothing demanded of him. “The ocean is beautiful. I think you’ll like it.” But back on chores. Fabric. “For Mirabel, right?” She hoped she remembered that right, the young lady was the one who liked to sew and decorate clothing. Briefly her eyes drifted over Bruno’s worn ruana and she nudged him gently. “Have you asked her if she might be able to patch up this for you?” It could use some tender loving care.
