I left my heart in your room
destroy the idea that intermediate goals aren’t important. maybe you can’t play the entire piano piece yet, but you can play the right hand and that’s good. maybe you haven’t figured out your major yet, but your minor or your field and that’s progress. maybe you can’t hold a full conversation in your target language yet, but you can ask for directions and that’s fine. setting high goals is good, but don’t diminish the small goals you achieve on your way there. they are just as important.

i came across this instagram post, and i thought it’s a friendly reminder for my current (and future) self:
you are allowed to redefine yourself
you are allowed to shift, pivot, and alter your course
you are allowed to develop new opinions, beliefs and ideas
you are allowed to change your mind
you are allowed to take off hats that no longer fit
you are allowed to shake things up
you are allowed to do a 180-degree transition. maybe even 360.
you are allowed to grow and change.
you are allowed to unlearn who you’ve been if it isn’t who you are anymore.
our society doesn’t make much room for change to be okay. we’re so often told to choose, to commit, to stay the couse... we’re told that if we care about something enough, we’ll do whatever it takes to make it work.
sometimes, this is true — sometimes, we *will* do whatever it takes. and... sometimes, we’ll realize it just isn’t for us anymore. we’ll realize there are parts of us we want to let go of and leave behind. we’ll realize we don’t feel the same now as we used to. we’ll realize our ideas and dreams and visions have changed. we’ll realize *we’ve* changed, which might shift how we want to show up in the world.
when we let shifting, changing, and doing something different be okayy, we open ourselves up to the opportunity of reconnecting with our truth and our meaning, over and over. giving ourselves (and others) permission to redefine who we are throughout our lives is freedom.
what part of you don’t quite fit these days?
what story isn’t really true for you anymore?
what pattern isn’t serving you any longer? what role are you filling that you might want to examine deeper?
how are you shifting, changing, and growing?
what are you redefining?
and how are yoyu making room for all of it to be okay?

wow, it’s been a whiile since i’ve been on tumblr. i haven’t posted in forever. anyone still around?
anyways, i started looking through my tumblr archives the other day because i was trying to find what classes i took when i was a freshman in high school. and man, the nostalgia hit. like wow, this site was such a HUGE part of my life as a teenager.
now i’m 24 years old. i have a full-time job — i’m really a career woman. huh.
it’s weird reflecting on who i was 10 years ago and seeing that.
i’ve also kind of kept up writing in physical journals. i’ve gone back and forth on whether or not i should blog/journal digitally or physically since such a huge part of what i do is working on a computer and basically being online all the time. it’s nice to have that break and actually see words on paper. there’s also the fear that people r going to find this tumblr site and link it back to me (not that it’s advertised anywhere but still.. maybe i should just get rid of my pic here).
anyways i think i think better typing. so maybe i can do both? i don’t know, i’m still trying to figure it out. plus, i can reblog images and reshare things on here and get that inspiration i’ve kind of lost in the last few years.
i stopped writing poetry. i stopped creating art. i cringe when i write something too “deep” or “in my feelings.” but i kind of miss all of those things.

What part of yourself did you have to destroy in order to survive in the world this year? But most importantly: what have you found to be unkillable?

Mad Girl’s Love Song
A Villanelle
I shut my eyes and all the world drops dead; I lift my lids and all is born again. (I think I made you up inside my head.)
The stars go waltzing out in blue and red, And arbitrary blackness gallops in: I shut my eyes and all the world drops dead.
I dreamed that you bewitched me into bed And sung me moon-struck, kissed me quite insane. (I think I made you up inside my head.)
God topples from the sky, hell’s fires fade: Exit seraphim and Satan’s men: I shut my eyes and all the world drops dead. I fancied you’d return the way you said, But I grow old and I forget your name. (I think I made you up inside my head.) I should have loved a thunderbird instead; At least when spring comes they roar back again. I shut my eyes and all the world drops dead. (I think I made you up inside my head.)
–Sylvia Plath, written 1954, The Collected Poems, 1981
