Why Ashe is better for Overwatch lore than Junkerqueen will ever be
Now, I had a mixed reaction to Ashe last night. From the moment the camera focused on a pair of scarlet eyes and white bangs, I knew Blizzard have disappointed me. âOh, come on!â I cried out from my seat. She looked like a cheesy self-insert from a second-rate McCree fanfiction (the 1% of it where he's not gay). Then Blizzard baited us with the enigmatic omnic Echo, later confirming that we are not yet ready for her, while Ashe and her sidekick Bob are here to stay. Since then Ashe had slightly grown on me - mostly because her voice actress did an excellent job bringing this violent lady to life. Her âBOB, DO SOMETHING!â screech is hilarious, her omnic companion is endearing, her mechanics are cool... But she is, unfortunately, still a filler, an acquaintance of someone from the main cast, not unlike Brigitte and Hammond.

Overwatch fandom tends to fall into the logical fallacy of assuming that playable heroes are the only important characters in OW universe. It goes as far as, for example, thinking that Mercy was personally responsible for making prosthetics for everyone and building Genji's cyborg body, while she is not even qualified for that. Believe it or not, there are other doctors, scientists, inventors, engineers, etc. in the world, so playable heroes don't have to be involved in everything. A good example is Moira supposedly creating Widowmaker and other Talon units, as seen in Retribution. People treat Moira as the only unethical geneticist around, outright ignoring the fact, that 30 years prior to the game events there was a whole organization funded by the US Army, with possibly dozens if not hundreds of scientists employed, who experimented on young soldiers. This organization, according to Jack Morrison, was heavily mismanaged, and at least one of his "bosses" had clearly eugenicist views. So, instead of demonizing current-day Moira, who is outright stated by Jeff Kaplan to NOT be interested in eugenics, and whose only work that we know about was treatment if genetic degeneration that Reyes suffered from (which, due to her lack of caution, had unforeseen complications), and wonder if some of those SEP scientists are still around? Because, let me remind you that people used to believe that Mercy created Reaper, before Moira was introduced, just because she was the most fitting candidate people knew about. And now Moira, who actually created Reaper, is the resident scapegoat who is also responsible for every other miserable mutant. Please, stop making the same mistakes, thinking that there are, like, 50 people in this universe who do anything, and they are all related in some ways.

everyone in the ovw fandom except a few choice lesbians just loves to make moira a blatantly evil abuser w literally no nuance in their fanwork n like⌠part of me is starting to wonder if thatâs largely because she looks butch and the broad public doesnât find her sexy
i mean, blizzard sure didnât help by trying to imply sheâs a eu.genicist but people donât seem to have a problem being into hanzo, critically acclaimed brother murderer, or doomfist, violent social darwinist, or even junkrat, a homicidal criminal who looks like a roadkill goblin.
tbh iâm not even trying to bust out some big âgotchaâ by claiming itâs grade A lesbiphobia, i am genuinely curious why people do this. moira is never written with any ounce depth. she is just an evil plot device, a cold abuser for gabe and widow to suffer trauma from, a talon double agent who ruined overwatch, mercyâs horrific unbearable ex-girlfriend/wife/scientific collaborator. why isnât she worth any more than that. why isnât she at least clever when she does prove to be an obstacle for other characters. if you need her to fuck people over that bad why canât she do it with any skill or dignity. does moira oâdeorain truly have zero appealing or even interesting qualities as a character beyond being a morally corrupt scientist
believe it or not iâm not even that passionate about moira as a character, she isnât my favorite. people just write the actual robots from overwatch with more emotional depth than her and it really scrambles my eggs
That. is. it.
Its one of my biggest pet peeve when a villain character (usually male) gets the Draco with leather pants treatment and people are absolving him of all his wrongdoings just because huehue heâs misunderstood,Â
but at the same time demonizing a female villain/morally grey character, especially when Moira is actually confirmed to be morally gray!I see that happen so many times it is actually sexist at this point
Iâm fine with Moira being evil. Think all you want about Moira but that does not mean you can make Gabe turn out better than he really is.
QUIT. EXCUSING. REAPER
Mercy got the same treatment from lore theorists, when she was the resident "wicked witch", without having no visible evil qualities. Moira was pretty much what those people wanted Mercy to be, but they went either further with it. It is "evil!Mercy" all over again. It requires the same caliber of improbable assumtions to believe that the hero we have known for almost 4 years is completely different from his in-game self. I am not denying that Reaper might not be 100% loyal to Talon or that he might see himself as the hero of his own quest, but it doesn't mean that another character should be thrown under the bus for Reyes to turn out innocent. The fanboying go as far as refusing to assume that their precious Blackwatch commander was indeed manipulated or deceived. In those theories he is seeing through Moira's scheming and has the Dumbledore-ish level of control over the situation, only going along with the villains's plan when it suits him. So, Moira is "the corruptor" but she fails even at that. How much do you have to hate this woman to deny her even something she definitely has - her intellect?
magepie replied to your post
Her voice actress is Genevieve O'Reilly and she is from Dublin, same as Moira. Skinny middle-aged females exist, you know. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
Where was anyone denying that skinny middle-aged cis women exist, fam?
And of course OâReillyâs name is âenglish-izedâ, only in Gaelic "Ăâ and âNĂâ matter. But Blizzard loves to research this kind of shit, theyâve already given all the other characters a name fitting to their nationality, so is it really that unimaginable that the Irish character has an Irish name and this âmistakeâ was made on purpose?
They didn't really do their research with russian names (like, Katya is not even a real name and is not a way to address a CEO) and I seriously doubt they would do gaelic better. Now, Moira looks like someone who could be conceptualized as trans but it seems unlikely that they would settle with an amoral self-mutilating scientist as their first trans hero. Making her a simply gender-nonconforming woman (a futuristic take on a witch, no less) is a much safer option.
The Real Problem with Overwatch Storytelling
The Moira announcement and the expanded Overwatch lore that accompanied it seemed to cause a divide among fans, particularly those who are invested in the story that accompanies the game. The two main camps seem to be 1) Blizzard writing is awful and canât keep track of its own canon or 2) fans mistake fanon for canon and this causes âinconsistenciesâ that arenât really there. To some extent, both are true: Blizzard has some continuity errors and fanon in the Overwatch community is pretty strong.
However, neither of these is an actual explanation for the problems fans have with the Overwatch story. The fact is, Overwatch is one of the worst ways to tell a narrative. The game itself is noncanonical, so most of the story is delivered through comics, animated shorts, and official information on the different heroes. Thatâs not to say that Blizzard didnât create a compelling cast of characters with interesting stories, or even that the shorts and comics on their own arenât amazingly well done. But to build a coherent narrative, it ends up being confusing and seemingly contradictory.

Blizz: Meet Mercy - our ethical and selfless medic! Fans: Nah... She is a mad witch with a god complex who experiments on living people to achieve immortality! Blizz: Where did you even get this idea?! Fans: Well, that one guy from reddit heard some voicelines back in the early beta... Blizz: These lines never existed in the game. You probably misheard some piece of completely innocuous dialogue... Fans: No, we are completely sure. Anything less than Mercy being the literal devil will be Bad Writing, get that, Blizzard? Blizz: Okay... Well... Meet Moira - Talon geneticist who is actually responsible for Reyesâ transformation into Reaper, has history with both Mercy and Blackwatch, and... Fans: BAD WRITING BLIZZ BAD

Overwatch character evolution
Tracer: speedster guy -> speedster girl in a bikini -> speedster lesbian girl in british pilot attire
Symmetra: white girl -> autistic indian woman with a fitting voice actor and lines in hindi
Pharah: white guy -> half-arabic half-native canadian female military officer
Sombra: one asian girl -> two asian guys and female mexican hacker genius
Mei: skinny white bounty hunter -> plump chinese climatologist
Doomfist: mcguffin gauntlet -> a nigerian businessman, martial artist, and mastermind behind a worldwide criminal organisation
Mercy: black man -> white female surgeon, scientist and innovator
Blizzard, how dare you!..
People say that Roadhog and Junkrat donât need another comic, but I disagree. Roadhog. Roadhog needs a comic. As a character who was basically written as Junkratâs sidekick, he needs a story. He is an older character and like other older characters he is related to lore-relevant events. He is also much, much less popular than Junkrat due to his appearance, so fans donât produce enough content with him. So Blizzard should do it instead (like they did with Torbjorn - have you seen any fan content and headcanons about Torbjorn?).
Go, Roadhogâs comic!
My theory on the Junker Queen
As you arrive at the gates of Junkertown as either Junkrat or Roadhog, the Queen âgreetsâ you: - You are either braver or dumber than you look, Junkrat! - You know better than to show your face around here, Mako.
I find it really interesting that the Queen calls Roadhog by his real name, because his official bio states that he abandoned it long agoâŚ
Adapting to his environment, he donned a mask and took to the broken highways of the Outback on his ramshackle chopper. Little by little, his humanity was forgotten. The last vestiges of Mako faded away and the ruthless killer Roadhog was born.Â
This is kind of played with in their (datamined only, I guess?) in-game dialogue as Junkrat realizes that he has no idea what his loyal bodyguardâs name is and Roadhog tells him.Â
Junkrat: Ahh. Remember that time we stole the crown jewels? All hail King Jamison Fawkes the First! And, ehm, Duke Roadhog? What is your name anyways? Roadhog: Mako.
While this dialogue is endearing and probably shows a growing trust between the two partners in crime, Junkrat never uses Roadhogâs real name in game or in comics, preferring nicknames such as âRoadhogâ or âPigfaceâ. We donât know if their Kingâs Row dialogue is not canon like some of the in-game voicelines and Roadhog never told Junkrat his name, or Junkrat just forgot it in the next five minutes (very likely) or rather chose not to use it because Roadhog doesnât wish to be reminded of his past (less likely but kind of sweet).Â
Then, the Queen surely knows his name and uses it despite the fact that Roadhog has not been known as Mako Rutledge for many, many years. I got the idea that she could be a former member of the Australian Liberation Front, because her âWE won the war, WE reap the spoilsâ rhetoric would make no sense if she wasnât one herself. This puzzles me because the Queen looks really young in her poster. Too young to be of Roadhogâs generation. While this could be simply the case of Blizzardâs inability to draw realistic older females, there is another thing that got me thinking that the poster art is not representative of the Queenâs actual appearance and has not been representative for quite some timeâŚ
Her description as the former mech battle champion.Â
There is nothing that indicates that the Queen is still fighting in the arena herself. She clawed her way to the top, she got her ultimate prize. While other championsâ posters are only present in vicinity of the arena, hers are all around the town. Could they actually be leftovers from her gladiatorial glory days, now used as propaganda? Itâs not like aging post-apocalyptic dictators are above vanity and trying to look like their younger selvesâŚ
I definitely wouldnât be surprised if future depictions of the Queen in comics or elsewhere will reveal that she is actually much older now than fans imagine her to be from the teaser alone. However, not to get my hopes too high, it is still more likely that she is just a map-specific NPC/announcer with no ties to future lore, and her design simply wasnât given much thought from the originalty/diversity standpoint. Like, nobody critisized Katya Volskaya design (or the fact that âKatyaâ is not an actual name, but a hypocoristics) or praised Blizzard for making the mayor of London a woman of colour. This just flew under the fansâ radar. The Queen is probably the first NPC to get this much attention, because of her voice actressâ astounding work and Youtube hype that followed. Her design is not a future heroâs design and definitely is not the extent of what Blizzard artists can do with their female characters.
I got into a discussion on how Blizzard supposedly treats Widowmaker unfairly and that all the lore and characterization she gets donât count because, well, they are not in the game.Â
Well, letâs see what heroes have their own map in-game. I mean, not just their âhome mapâ or an easter egg here and there but a place that is solely focused on telling a heroâs story via in-game props.
Ana&Soldier - Necropolis Mei - Eco-Point Antarctica Widowmaker - Chateau Guillard Winston - Horizon Lunar Colony
As you can see, 5 of 25 characters have a privilege of their own map. Widowmaker is one of them (for example, Tracer, the poster girl, gets none).Â

I tend to shrug off the practicality of these costumes as theyâre clearly meant for fun, and I donât have a problem with Widow having a bikini costume necessarily. The issue I have is how Blizzard chose to present it: the image mentioned above, the fact that her only appearance in the trailer is her lounging with âA perfect 10â being said over it. Thereâs also Mercy (yet again) getting a costume that frequently shows off her panties, and the mistletoe Widowmaker intro being much more of an awkward angle instead of an empowering one.
Iâm happy they at least seem to be getting better with staying on model with their characters (thank god McCree is still dark skinned) but I still look forward to the day where the trademark of the brainwashed woman with unclear agency being more than just âsheâs sexyâ.
Also, Widow DOES have a story & she IS intetesting. Sheâs one of the few people that gets a lot of attention in the comics & cinematics. You can learn a lot about her character if you read between the lines. So basically, leave my Spider Wife alone. Being sexy isnât a crime, so donât treat it like it is.
Being sexy is not a crime. Thatâs not the problem here. The problem is that all the other stereotypes are interesting or empowering in some wayââsexy lady just âcauseâ has been done to death and, again, the way Blizzard is treating her makes her more objectified, which is a trend that really needs to stop in gaming, especially when Blizzard made âdoing women betterâ a mission statement for Overwatch.
Youâre allowed to like Widowmaker. Iâm not saying youâre not. Iâm saying that itâs very troubling the way she is being handled and instead of diving into her more interesting back story Blizzard is focusing on her purely being sexy. This is especially iffy when, as I mentioned, she is brainwashed and we donât know how much free will she actually has. Sexiness is not the problem. Objectificaction is.
Widowmaker just received a role in a comic where she is shown as competent and highly respected by Talon leaders - and a whole freaking map dedicated to her character. I would argue that blizz treats her well enough.
Her having a new map dedicated to her character (with hardly any lore in it, honestly) does not change the fact that all but two of her outfits in the game are sexualized: meaning, they either defy physics or make no sense fashion-wise, specifically to cater to the male gaze; or that her animations were made clearly with the intention to emphasize her butt, to the point where her back seems broken. Not to mention that the events of the comics do not take place inside the game; you need to go out of your way to view it and the majority of them stand on their own with the game making zero connections (the closest being the Halloween and Uprising ones, or the fact that Tracer got precisely one line about Emily.)
You can have sexy without sexualized. Sombra is a good example of thatâher skins show offâŚwell, skin, but not in a way that is ridiculous or clearly meant for the attention of straight guys.
Iâm not here to insult your favorite character. I actually do find her backstory interesting, though I wish Blizzard would develop on it more already. Iâm here to say that she deserves better. Especially since, again, she was one of the first few characters created for the game, despite Blizzard making it a goal to âdo women betterâ.
I hope that all made sense? Please let me know if it didnât.
What I understand is that people will never be content with Widowmaker, because Blizzard will never change or remove any of her existing skins and animations. So she will continue to be an example of "bad female character design" as long as this game exists. No matter how objectively better Blizzard will get over time (even though I was never specifically appalled by her "sexy assassin" look in the first place, let's be honest, they had a long way to go with the original female roster). No matter, how great Ana and Sombra are, and how progressive Orisa's concept was, Overwatch will never be "good", because "hey, Widowmaker is half-naked".

ana amariâs tea time emote
Ohmygoshohmigoshohmigosh!!!!!
A female character well over 50 that is NOT SEXUALISED AND STILL BEATS ASS!
Iâm excited ^^
Oye, @bikiniarmorbattledamage, a positive example among the widowmakers and tracers in that game ^^
Itâs very exciting to see Blizzard has started work on making the game that they said they wanted to make shortly after announcing Overwatch!
Ana Amari certainly looks amazing and greatly boosts representation for badass mothers and older women of color though I notice something.
Of her eleven skins: Five show Ana as her glorious mature-aged self, four show her with her face completely covered and two show her as young. Â In fact there are zero Legendary skins where you can see Anaâs beautiful older face.
And the skins with her as a young woman donât really do anything surprising with her, itâs not like Genjiâs showing him as pre-cybernetic, itâs just⌠well:
So while itâs fantastic that Blizzard has started to realize that women in their sixties are dramatically under represented in action games - itâs kind of a shame that they couldnât commit to it the whole way.
- wincenworks
Ana is a very welcome addition to Overwatchâs cast (heavens know weâre in a desperate need for older women in media, especially games), though I canât help but notice how, not unlike Zayra, sheâs a very safe approach to diversity. While being 60, sheâs at the âconventionally attractive lady with grey hair and a couple facial linesâ side of old person design.
Also, the fact that Anaâs clothes look very realistic for a sniper make Widowmakerâs hypersexualization stand out even more. With changes Blizzard made so far, theyâve proven a couple of times how they can edit and add things to the game as they please, but are afraid to change all that much
~Ozzie
So, just over a year ago we reached perhaps peak hopefulness with Blizzard and their âdoing women characters betterâ game: Overwatch
Now the Summer Games special has come around again and letâs see what theyâve learned about their audience and what they want to see, and thereâs a lot of potential, I mean in the new skins along, three empowered men (1, 2, 3):
Or is it with the new skin for the brown woman who got a new skin, Sombra (x):
Of course not, their promo strategyâs opening * is peak predictability:
Yes, apparently Widowmaker needed a shirt with no chest so she could show off her combat bikini and had to also have a garter:
It makes me suspicious that I know who may have overseen the designâŚ
Meanwhile Ana has two novelty skins at this point⌠exactly zero of them make it clear that she is an older woman.
- wincenworks
* Yes I am aware they followed with promoting Junkratâs skin, in the most boring and unempowering way humanly possible.
I tend to shrug off the practicality of these costumes as theyâre clearly meant for fun, and I donât have a problem with Widow having a bikini costume necessarily. It is extremely funny to see people complaining about Widowmakerâs bikini skin. Like, it actually covers more than her ballet skins and is less form-fitting than her default skin. And it IS an actual swimsuit ffs. Arguably, McCreeâs skin is more sexualuzed, showing off his abs, hips and body hair along with âSAMFâ belt buckle. And donât you say that it is the case of âmale power fantasyâ: female fan artists found this skin extremely sexy and, akhem, inspirational. Iâve never seen so much lewd fan art of a skin produced in 48 hours. Finally, Sombra's new skin is very modest and more dorky than anything, which kind of ruins the idea that "Blizzard are trying to fit their female characters into bikinis to sell more loot boxes to creeps!!!1" It also shows that she doesn't have the same body type as Tracer or D.va underneath her coat.
