“If fate insists on brevity,” he murmured, pulling her in closer, “then let me spend this night giving you every ounce of love I have ever known, and every ounce I will never have time to learn. Let me love you so thoroughly that the universe itself will have to remember us.”

Tav felt something inside her splinter open. Her hands slid up his chest and caught in his shirt, needing the solid reality of him under her palms.

“Make me believe you’re going to live,” she said, voice rough at the edges. “I need to believe I’m not loving you on borrowed time.”

He cupped her face with both hands, and the meadow suddenly felt suspended.

Maera woke before the light broke. The camp lay quiet around her, the embers of the fire low and red, the others wrapped in sleep, Bookmark still cozily curled up to Theo. For a moment Maera lay still, listening to the distant stir of birds she couldn’t yet see. 

Her gaze shifted, and found Cassian already awake, sitting across the fire with his back against a fallen log, hands loosely folded, his eyes on her. 

When their eyes met, he didn’t look away. He smiled, small and tender, and it felt like something meant only for her.

Maera pushed herself up on one elbow, the blanket slipping from her shoulder. Cassian tilted his head, a subtle question, and flicked his gaze toward the treeline just beyond the reach of the firelight.

Walk?

She nodded.

Cassian rose, careful not to wake the others, and offered his hand to steady her as she stood. His fingers lingered for half a heartbeat longer than necessary, neither of them quite ready to let go. 

Before they left, Cassian paused. He reached down and picked up two of the folded blankets from beside the fire, tucking them under his arm without comment. Maera noticed, and the small certainty of it sent a warmth through her chest she didn’t name.

They walked without speaking at first, the ground cool beneath their boots, the air crisp and clean. The path dipped gently, forgiving underfoot — pine needles and soft soil instead of broken stone. 

Cassian broke the silence first.

“I keep thinking about that place,” he said.

Maera turned her head toward him, the forest dim and blue around them, the light only just beginning to soften at the edges.

“The laboratory,” he continued. “The horrors inside it. What they did to people who were… inconvenient.” His jaw tightened. “How easily lives became footnotes.”

“I realized something last night,” he said, and there was a steadiness to his voice that felt earned. “If I don’t choose the things that matter while I still can… someone else will choose for me.”

The truth of it settled heavy in Maera’s chest.

“I don’t want to lose myself,” Cassian added, quieter now. “Before I ever let myself live.”

She reached for his hand then. Her fingers slid into his, reassuring and familiar.

They walked on a little farther, until the trees thinned and the first threads of dawn slipped through the branches, pale gold and hesitant. The clearing felt suspended, ready to hold whatever they chose to place into it. 

Cassian laid out a blanket for them, placing the other one to the side. He sat first, then patted the blanket in front of him, gesturing for Maera to join him. She obliged with a gentle smile. They sat close enough that their knees touched before either of them meant to.

“I’ve been trying to say this a dozen different ways,” he said, looking up at the early light spilling over the treeline. 

“Trying to make it… worthy enough for you. Or impressive. Perfect.” He gave a rueful huff of a laugh as his eyes found hers. “But I have wasted too much time already. And the truth doesn’t need all that.”

Maera’s heart was beating hard now, everywhere at once. Cassian reached out and took both of her hands in his, and she could feel his pulse in his fingers as his gaze moved from their hands to her eyes.

“I’m in love with you, Maera.” 

He didn’t look away. 

“Completely. Every part of you.”

The world narrowed to the space between them, to the way his voice had broken ever so slightly on her name. She had imagined this moment before in quieter versions, safer ones. None of them had prepared her for how violently it would land in her chest.

“Cassian,” she said, and the sound of it surprised her, rougher than she meant, almost pleading. “I—”

Whatever she had intended to say dissolved under the weight of what she felt. Months. Years. All the restraint she’d learned as survival turning suddenly useless.

“I love you,” she said instead, the words tumbling out bare. “And I’m so tired of pretending I don’t. I don’t know how to do that anymore.”

Her hand moved out of his and slid to his jaw, thumb brushing his short beard there. He leaned into the touch instinctively, like it was a lifeline. When he spoke again, it was no longer measured.

“I would have courted you properly,” he said, words spilling now. “If we were in Stonewake. I should have. If this world weren’t—” He broke off with a sharp exhale. 

“I would have made something beautiful of this instead of stealing it in fragments. I would have loved you in the open, where nothing had to be hidden, where dusk could arrive gently and find us already there.”

Cassian looked at her with such earnest reverence that it left her momentarily unsteady, her eyes burning with emotion. Maera pressed a hand to his chest. 

“You still can,” Maera said, simple and certain. “In the ways we’re allowed.” Her hand slid higher. “But I need you to stop standing three steps away from me like you’re afraid to want what’s right in front of you.”

Cassian raised his hand to Maera’s face, caressing her cheek with his thumb.

“You don’t understand,” he rasped, his forehead dropping to hers. He closed his eyes as if it made him feel more brave. 

“I have thought about this more times than I can count. About you. About touching you. Wondering how soft your skin is.” His fingertips traced a path from her jaw to her collarbone, the path of his touch setting her skin on fire. His voice dropped into a low hum. 

“About what it would be like to make love to you.”

They had moved so close that their lips almost touched, and Maera’s hand cradled Cassian’s face.

“I’m yours,” she whispered. “And I am aching for you.”

He pressed his forehead to hers again, holding himself still by sheer will.

“Tell me to stop,” he breathed. “Please. If I go any further, I won’t know how to survive pulling back.”

Maera’s hands gripped his shirt.

“Please, don’t stop,” she said, nearly begging, daring him to take her.

The sound he made was wrecked and intimate, and then his lips met hers, gentle enough to make her heart ache, and hungry enough to make her forget the world. Maera felt him deepen it in a slow, inevitable slide. He angled closer until there was almost nowhere left for her to be except against him.

Cassian drew back just enough to look into her eyes again. His voice came rougher than he meant it to, stripped of polish and caution alike.

“I should tell you,” he said, like a confession he wasn’t sure how to frame, “I haven’t done this in… quite some time.”

Maera’s hands tightened in his shirt immediately, fingers curling. She leaned in close, mouth brushing his as she answered.

“Me too. Long enough that I forgot what it was supposed to feel like,” she said. 

Then, softer: “And whatever I had before wasn’t real. This is.”

His hand stilled for a fraction of a second before his thumb brushed along her lower lip.

“Then,” he murmured, “we can take our time remembering.”

The first touch was careful and reverent, until restraint gave way all at once. His mouth moved against hers with a depth that spoke of years of wanting, of holding himself apart. His hands learned her without apology, and the clearing around them melted away, leaving only want and heat and the certainty that this had always been coming.

Cassian’s fingers slid into Maera’s hair, anchoring her as she shifted closer, her knees settling on either side of his legs. She stayed upright with him, hands still fisting in his shirt to keep him close, to keep him from leaning back, from leaving even a sliver of space between them. He tilted her head gently, his mouth finding the curve of her neck, kissing her there with unhurried intention. His other arm wrapped around her waist, holding her as if she might drift away if he didn’t.

Her hands found the hem of his shirt. He paused only long enough to lift his arms, letting her pull it free, and then he was kissing her again, insistent now, voracious, as though any interruption was unbearable.

A moment later, Maera pulled back. Her fingertips traced the newly healed scar along his ribs, careful and questioning. Cassian watched her, and then caught her hand, guiding it upward until her palm rested against his cheek. He leaned into her touch, and when he kissed her again, it was slower this time, deeper, carrying a quiet assurance that settled through her.

He pulled back again, his expression shifting into something new to her. His eyes were dark and fierce, his breathing rough and desperate. She felt the echo of his desire as keenly as her own. Slowly, deliberately, she lifted her arms in silent invitation.

Cassian moved with a certainty that made her chest ache. He drew her shirt over her head, letting it fall away, his gaze never leaving her face. She pressed herself against him, bare skin to skin, the contact sparking an aching deep inside her. Her heart settled into a steady rhythm against his, and beneath it all she felt a familiar hum — her magic stirring, gentle and responsive, like a tide rather than a flame.

She shifted closer, losing balance deliberately, and he followed her movement down onto the blanket without hesitation. For a moment he only looked at her, brushing her hair back from her face.

“You undo me so completely I forget to breathe,” he murmured.

Maera reached for him, drawing him down into another kiss, their hands exploring, discovering and being discovered. 

The rest of their clothing fell in a quiet heap beside the blankets, and then they took their time, guided only by the urgency of finally allowing it.

She relaxed beneath him, responding instinctively, desire building low and deep until it became impossible to ignore. She guided his hand lower, and he followed without question. His eyes stayed on her face, and she softened into his touch, lips parting. 

Maera’s hands moved suddenly with a confidence she hadn’t known she owned, tracing him with quick, searching purpose. Cassian made a sound that broke into a breathless laugh and then into silence, his forehead dipping to her shoulder as his control faltered. She held him there, kept touching, kept coaxing, and felt the way he started to come apart under her hands like he’d been waiting years to be allowed.

Something in him shifted at once, and she felt it in the way his hands moved after that, careful and devoted, as though he’d decided to learn her properly.

Maera’s body tightened, then fractured entirely. She surrendered to the sensation, to the way he watched her, learned her, adjusted with quiet dedication. A smile curved on his lips with every broken sound that escaped her. Pleasure crested slowly inside her, relentlessly, until it spilled through her in a way that left her shaking, completely unraveled.

Cassian kissed her again, and lingered close, unwilling to retreat, until she drew him back to her.

“Please,” she murmured, her voice rough, unsteady. “I need you.”

That was all it took.

He moved into her, their bodies fitting together with a rightness like they’d done this a thousand times before. Cassian pressed his forehead to hers, steadying himself against the depth of it. Maera answered with a low, helpless sound, her hands tightening against him.

He began slowly, watching her face, adjusting with every subtle movement and moan. When she urged him closer, when her hands pressed into his back with unmistakable intent, his control finally gave way.

They moved together in a rhythm that felt instinctive, inevitable. Maera clung to him, needing to erase even the smallest distance between them, kissing him hard as the tension built again — deeper this time, fuller. 

Rapture rolled through her in slow, gathering waves, but it wasn’t sharp or consuming. It was expansive. Her magic stirred beneath her skin, opening, warm and luminous, as though it recognized this closeness and was answering it on instinct. Cassian stilled abruptly. Something hitched in him, and he lifted his hand in front of his face. 

Maera followed his gaze and felt it then too — the air around his fingers pulsing faintly, threaded with the same warmth moving through her. She watched his knuckles flex, watched wonder overtake his face as if he could feel her there, inside his own skin, steady and tranquil and unmistakably alive. The moment held, fragile and immense. This wasn’t her magic reacting to desire. It was responding to connection. And whatever it was doing between them felt unbearably, devastatingly right.

Cassian stayed with the sensation, eyes dark with awe, and something in him seemed to have recognized the shape of it before his mind could catch up. The currents between them deepened, harmonizing, her magic answering his presence as his awareness answered hers. Maera felt it gather, the connection tightening until there was no clear edge where she ended and he began. Whatever threshold they had crossed, it wasn’t desire that carried her forward — it was alignment.

When she came undone again, he didn’t look away. He held her through it, eyes locked on hers, sharing the intensity without retreat. 

That was when his restraint finally gave way, and his pace quickened, his movements growing more urgent, more certain, as if he were pouring everything he had been holding back into her now.

At last, he tensed and shuddered, pressing his forehead to hers as he followed her over the edge, the sound he made low and reverent, the moment stripping him of words entirely.

Neither of them dared to move. Their bodies were still heavy with arousal, the echo of want lingering between them. Maera wished she could stay here forever, where her body still remembered him everywhere at once and her magic lay peaceful and open inside her, unafraid, unbraced, and complete.

For a long moment, neither of them spoke.

Cassian shifted slightly, and then he took Maera’s hand in his, their fingers lacing together. 

“Mae,” he said faintly.

She opened her eyes.

“I felt you,” he said. His voice was rough, stripped down. “Like… you were under my skin. Like something in me opened and knew exactly what to do.”

She nodded, unable to look away from him. “I know,” she whispered. “It felt like it was being answered.”

Cassian swallowed.

“It didn’t feel like your magic,” he said. “It felt like us.” He looked down at their hands, pressed between them. “Like I wasn’t alone in my own body.”

The admission landed between them, heavy and intimate.

“I didn’t know that could happen. That my magic could feel like that,” Maera said.

“It was incredible,” he breathed. “You just keep surprising me.”

She smiled at him. He regarded her for a moment, like he was trying to hold onto the feeling just a little bit longer, the quiet between them vast and blissful. Then he kissed her, deeply and intimately, unwilling to let go just yet.
