The weather outside was dreary, rainy, and just plain unfriendly. It made Maddie feel restless. Most of the weekend, the weather had been gross, and she had been stuck inside for way too long. The only saving grace was Gabe. He had a knack for keeping her occupied when not much else would. He also seemed to know when she needed to blow off steam and would intentionally bug her so she could. Maybe that wasn't the unconventional definition of a good relationship, but for Maddie, it was everything she needed. They just worked so damn well, even when they were bickering, it worked. She knew she could be a hard person to get along with, and the fact that Gabe only seemed to be more into it when she was being a butthead, well. That either made him a saint or insane, but either way he was hers.
The house was quiet, her parents were out for the night, and Maddie and Gabe had just had a lazy dinner in front of the TV, not really doing much of anything. Now, Maddie was sitting on the counter top by the sink, watching Gabe as he washed the few dishes they'd used. He'd lost a bet, and this was the price he was paying for that. She wasn't sure what the bet had been, but that didn't matter too much, they made a lot of little bets and challenges often, feeding their competitive nature. Her eyes scanned him slowly, taking him all in. The way he moved, the hint of a smirk on his lips.. Even watching him do nothing special at all, she could feel herself smile. Feel her heart swell. She'd always been so scornful when people would talk about 'the one'.. but looking at him, in that moment. She got it. It wasn't a grand light bulb realization. It just slipped quietly into her head, as though the knowledge had always been there.
"Hey.." She spoke gently, reaching out to his hand. Taking the dish from it and letting it slip back into the water. Her fingers linked with his and she leaned forward. Her other hand moving to his cheek to turn his head so she could kiss him. Slow, almost lazily. The angle was awkward, but it didn't matter. Life wasn't perfect, and this moment didn't need to be either. Lips still against his, she whispered. "I love you."
