Turning over slightly to face the back of the couch, Tendo wrapped his arms around himself, clenching his fingers on his arms as he tried to hold himself together. After what seemed like hours of shivering and whimpering, Tendo drifted into a fretful sleep. Broken by nightmares and pain, Tendo was barely aware of Malâs presence, only knowing that someone was there with a cool touch or a soft word to ease his pain. He whimpered and cried out Alisonâs name several times, only to wake and remember his plight.Â
When morning dawned and light touched through the windows, Tendo stirred to wakeness again, shivering with a chill even though his entire body was covered in a thin sheen of sweat and he had the bite of need burning in his veins. He needed a fix. He needed to stop the pain, to take away the awful prickling and twinging of his mind and body. Letting out a low moan, Tendo pressed the heels of his palms into his eyes until he saw sparkles of dark light behind his eyelids and the pain in his eyesocket spiked. He gritted his teeth, the pain in the blackened eye blanking out the other ills for a moment, at least until it became too much and he removed his hands, a tear slipping from the injured eye.Â
He couldnât remember where he was, he couldnât remember why he was alive. He should be dead. Heâd wanted to be dead. But something had happened last night. Something that put him⌠here. He squinted around, everything from the previous night fuzzed over by the omnipresent misery plaguing him.Â
Alerted by the low moaning coming from the bedroom, Mal yawned widely before lifting the tray he'd prepared - water, toast with a very thin layer of butter, a plain yogurt, milk. Simple, mild things to try with the younger while he recovered, well-remembered from the last time he had such a visitor. Carrying it through carefully, he managed a sympathetic smile, coming level with his ward. Sliding the tray onto a bedside table, he quietly handed Tendo a couple of ibuprofen and the fresh glass of water.
"You're awake early," he remarked, just barely stifling a yawn with a grimace. "May I...?" Lifting the towel from the previous night, he moved to very gently dab Tendo's face, trying to clean him of sweat and tears and drool. "I brought you a few things. You don't have to have any... I know you might not feel up to it but at least drink the water. And... and, y'know. Just let me know if you feel like you need anything."

[gun to muse's head; madmalmayfair] Mal considered the situation far slower than he should have. He studied her hold on the weapon, gazed with surprising numbness at the barrel, looked past it into her eye and blinked. The feeling of utter betrayal was like an old friend who liked to whisper 'I told you so' when things went horrifically wrong. Expecting it to be his last, he breathed in deeply. "I don't care if you pull the trigger, Steph," he murmured, blue eyes dull. "I just want to know why."
Her breaths were heavy, unstable, eye wide with insanity. She started the man down, gaze sure, but her hand shook. Why was she doing this? For fun? For her anger? She tilted her head as she thought on it for a moment. The gun slowly lowered.
"I⌠I donât. I donât know."
There was no wave of relief, no crashing numbness, no flood of tears or shaking as she lowered the gun. Just the dull, lingering feeling of betrayal, clinging to every fibre in his body, his shoulders tense with the sensation. He didnât avert his gaze.
"Whatâs wrong, Steph? Arenât we friends? If you need something from me, anything at all, you know Iâm happy to give it freely."
She seemed confused by such simple questions. She let out an almost dog like whimper as she sunk to her knees, holding her head, gun still in one hand. She shook her head from side to side.
"I-I-I. I donât know. We⌠You⌠IâŚI canât. I donât know. Why." Tears welted up in her eye as she continued to shake her head.
Lowering to his knees with her, he reached out both his hands. âGive me your hand,â he said softly, his tone as neutral as he could make it. âAnd give me the weapon. I might not know how yet, but I know I can help you if you let me.â

She hadnât planned for rain, and with the state her bike was currently in - the poor thing was overdue for a repair, and normally sheâd have had it done before her baby even showed any signs of having a problem, but this time the universe seemed determined to prevent her from fixing it, throwing every little thing it could in her way -Â
Point being, she hadnât planned on this sudden rainfall (more a deluge, if she was being honest with herself), and with how right now she just couldnât trust her bike on the slick roads, Nina knew she had to find somewhere to wait out the rain - at least until it lessened.
Which presented another problem: it was one A.M. on a Sunday night/morning/general time-period clusterfuck. As far as Nina could see ahead of her (which, granted, wasnât terribly far, thanks to the weather), the street was all dark, with not a single lit window that she could approach in the hopes of finding shelter. No matter how far she drove down the street, slow and cautious and mentally pleading with her bike to hold out and not dump her for just a little longer, all she saw was darkened -Â
Wait.
There, ahead - was thatâŚ.?
"Oh fuck yes," she breathed as a lone square of light swam into view. Quickly, she turned off into a nearby alleyway, then parked and dismounted before covering the bike with a tarp from the side carrier. Iâll fix you up soon, promise, she thought at it, giving it one final pat - then she turned towards the lone lighted window.
"Hope you donât mind me barging in here," Nina said, barging in there in a flash of wind and a flurry of raindroplets. "But itâs raining like a motherfucker out there, and I need to wait until it at least lets up a bit. Got a bike out there that I donât want to push too hard, and if I could just wait it out here for a little while, Iâd be pretty gratefulâŚ."
The rain was harsh for certain, but to the busy toymaker it was a soothing background drumming, a soft roar that was reminiscent of ocean waves or crackling flames in an old fireplace. As he worked away, carefully lining up cogs and connecting bands, that sound could be anything he needed it to be. Gazelles on the Serengeti, an avalanche in the Arctic, a mechanical roar of some fantastical metal beast, perhaps. Whatever he needed to keep the spark going for his new, intricate figure. Not for small children at all; the tiny cogs could become dislodged and get lost and then what? But perhaps an older sibling could let the little one watch as he or she tamed the beast made of cogs and springs.
So lost in the intricacies and new questions and trickiness was Mal that he hadn't noticed the sun setting, the clock chiming for seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, midnight. Even as it began the lone chime for one o' clock he took no notice, blue eyes sparkling with energy and ideas, fixed on the clockwork creation on his workbench.Â
Until the clock had finished chiming its lone chime, and almost as if on cue, the door swung open and a crashing of rain droplets followed a young woman into the previously quiet shop, and Mal jumped in fright at the urgency, poking the pad of his finger with one of the sharp tools he'd been holding. The spark of creativity had been extinguished, but the shock ensured weariness would not settle in, and after taking a long look at the intruder, he wordlessly bolted from the shop floor.
She was about his height, which made her very tall for a woman, which was very difficult not to notice, but it wasn't that, nor her imposing or possibly threatening nature, which had caused him to run away so quickly. It was that she had burst in like she had been drowning in that storm, a notion that barked orders in his head: towels, Mal; get her some towels! But what good were towels when she'd be forced to wear those damp clothes? The thoughts were frantic in his head. Robes, a shirt, a pair of jeans, slippers. He grabbed the items, caught on vaguely to the fleeting thought that they had similar builds, raced back to the shop and pushed the soft, dry towels towards her.
"Here, take 'em!" he crackled, high-pitched voice seeming to cut through the silence, as though it was absolutely imperative that she accept the towels as a matter of life or death. "I've got a little... it's like a kitchenette and office area; come on, come on! You can wait it out in there, if you like."
