“Hey mate, can I talk to you for a minute?”
Remus was utterly focused, nose in his book and mind on his studies. Which made it even more shocking when he looked up to see James Potter, captain of the university rugby team, standing in front of him with an easy, almost apologetic smile on his face.
“Erm…am I in your spot or something?” he asked, no idea why this boy, who ran in a completely different social circle than him, was speaking to him.
Potter’s eyes flashed with confusion. “What? Er–no! No, I was just…I have a favor to ask you, yeah?”
A favor. This random jock wanted a favor…from him? “Erm…I can try,” he hedged, shrugging. Maybe he wanted tutoring or something. Remus could certainly use the money.
“You know how you weren’t here yesterday? Like you normally are?” Potter asked, seemingly unaware of how creepy the question was.
Now Remus was a bit scared. Yes, he normally came to the library every day during lunch. And yes, he’d skipped yesterday because he was feeling ill, choosing to instead take a nap between classes. But why did that matter to this random person? “Yes…” he said, wondering if he could ever outrun the athlete.
“Right. Well here’s the thing. My mate, that one, there?” Potter pointed to another student who was currently in line at the cafe.
Remus instantly recognized him. He tended to be at the library every day around this time, too. Stunning, with long wavy black hair and eyes that pierced across the tired library floor, the boy was a Greek god. Yes, Remus had spent a fair few hours here gazing dreamily at the boy, looking quickly away every time he looked up. But the frequent girls who walked over to talk to him and the rugby jersey he often wore were enough to tell Remus that he didn’t have much of a shot, so he never had approached. “Yes. I see,” he muttered, trying not to blush.
“Great. He’ll kill me if I tell you this but I’m a bit desperate. The only reason he’s been coming here every day is to ogle you, right? And before this semester, his grades were shit. Shit enough that he had to sit out games–we were losing all the time. Now he’s got all passing marks and we’re winning. Not that he isn’t smart!” Potter was quick to clarify. “He’s just…not the most…academically motivated. So anyway…” the boy scratched awkwardly at the back of his neck. “Wow, this sounds so stupid now that I say it, you probably don’t care at all about rugby, but…he has this scholarship which he needs, and his scholarship only stands if he plays, and he’s been doing so much better since he’s been coming here, so…maybe will you keep coming?” Potter looked so boyishly hopeful, Remus almost felt bad that he’d gotten stuck on a statement from the very beginning of his speech.
“No way. He’s…he likes me?” he gasped, feeling like he was surely dreaming.
Now Potter broke into a grin. “Oh, yeah. Adores you actually. It’s pathetic. Wait, tell me I can give him your number? He’d be fucking over the moon, mate, you have no–”
Both of them looked up to see the boy, coffee now in hand, staring at them, face maroon with embarrassment. Potter swore. “He’s going to kill me.”
But for once, Remus felt confident. “What’s his name?” he asked in a whisper as the boy stalked towards them.
And as Sirius stopped in front of them, Remus gave him a shy grin. “Hi, Sirius. I’m Remus. D’you…maybe want to study together sometime?”
Potter cackled with glee as Sirius dropped his full cup in shock, awe on his stunning face.
