Women in Gaza are ensuring their families’ survival “with nothing but courage and exhausted hands” while violence continues and essentials remain in short supply, the UN’s gender equality agency warned on Tuesday. Sofia Calltorp, who just returned from a visit to the enclave last week, said that women there repeatedly told her “there may be a ceasefire, but the war is not over”. “The attacks are fewer, but the killings continue,” she said.

“It means being the last line of protection in a place where safety no longer exists,” she insisted.

I think of Wesal, who suffers for her children, refusing to take medication for her migraines, because she needs the money for her children. Wesal, whose heart cries when she sees her son yearning for a tomato, a single tomato, that she cannot afford. Wesal, who worries whether she will be able to buy the clothes they need to survive a third winter of displacement.

Wesal, who appeals to you, day and night, because she knows it's what will keep her daughter Farah alive.
