you didn't understand the words after he slurred your name, his head was hung low―the sight of him has your chest tightened.

he can barely stand anymore. with knees weak, he tumbles down but your quick to catch him, helping him down to sit him down. "your drunk," you crouched in front of him. his eyes track yours, searching for something you couldn't figure out.

he just nods, exhaling long enough your nose scrunched from the stench of whiskey that clung to him like a stain you couldn't wash off.

you sighed, slipping an arm under his heavy coat to help him up. he's heavier than usual, probably because he can barely hold himself up―dead weight by the toxicity in his body. the moment you host him up, getting a better grip on his arms, he instinctively grabs your sleeve.

"don't let go," he mummers, forehead dropping briefly to rest on your shoulder. you didn't. you would never even think of letting him go. you squeeze his arm, a silent promise.

you guided him out of the smelly. malnourished ally.

it was silent. no jokes. no teases. just comfortable silence- street lights illuming the sidewalks you walked. the wind blowing against your faces. dazai's steps were uneven, tripping over your ankles ever so often.

halfway down the street, he speaks. "do you ever get tired of me?"

you pause. stopping in your tracks, the detective limp against your hold. he sighed at the break you gave him, unaware of the million of thoughts in your head. his gaze flicks up, searching your face-no smug remark. generally waiting for your answer.

"why would you ask me that, now?" you asked quietly. he shrugs, tired. his shoulders weak. "people do, eventually." he pauses. "they always have a reason too ... and i don't blame them."

you took a few moments before replying, sighing softly. "you don't have to worry about any of the with me."

he looks away, a weak smile on his lips. "you say that now."

"osamu." the way you said his name, your voice stern. it makes him flinch. "everyday i put up with your jokes, your smarky remaks- i put up with everything you do. i wouldn't if i didnt care about you."

you start walking with him again, almost pulling him with you. "i put up with your stupid mask you give everybody- you think i don't notice but i do!"

dazai didn't bother to respond, he just listened to you like nothing else in his world existed. silencing his thoughts for a moment. "you don't have to pretend, you don't have to be someone else for me."

it was another few minutes of just silence- heels clicking against the concreate as you reached your complex door. "you can relax.." you smiled softly. "i got you."

he laughs- weakly. "that's what scares me." you shook your head, a soft smirk on your face as you twist the keys to the right. the door creaked as you helped dazai inside. sitting him down on the seat at your front entrance you shut the door and lock it.

"you know, if i were a better man"-"

you cut him off, slamming your keys to his side and stared him down. "your enough dazai, do you hear me?"

he blinks up at you, eyes glassy with tears. taking a moment, dazai's toxicity forcing him to slump against your chest to hug you, he lets out a shaky sigh. his head was buried in your shirt, his arms locked around your waist like he was afraid to let go.

afraid you'll slip away.

"does that mean you'll stay with me?" he asks. barely a whisper. not playful. not flirty. just ... honest.

you wrap your arms around his head, fingers playing with his messy brown locks. "i'm not going anywhere." you mumble, kissing the top of his head multiple times until you felt him relax.

you two stayed like that for a few extra minutes before you helped him out of his clothes and cleaned him up for the night. you ask yourself if hell remember this night, but you knew him.

he'll remember ... but never admit it.
