Favorite designs when it comes to backgrounds or characters?

If you mean to draw, then for characters, I find simple-yet-iconic most appealing to me, especially if I have to draw it multiple times.

No hate, of course, on character designs with a crap ton of intricate deliberate details.

As for backgrounds, I guess it depends on whether the focus is in the background or not. If not, then I usually don't have much regard for it.

Now, if you meant just looking, then I really love backgrounds that have this nice tint off in the distance that matches the color of the sky. And characters, I guess it's the same as drawing them. Simple, yet iconic.
