Sailing the green waves.
âI love that you get cold when itâs 71 degrees out. I love that it takes you an hour and a half to order a sandwich. I love that you get a little crinkle above your nose when youâre looking at me like Iâm nuts. I love that after I spend the day with you, I can still smell your perfume on my clothes. And I love that you are the last person I want to talk to before I go to sleep at night.â

jkr doesnt understand anything about america if she thinks the northern and southern states will share the same wizarding school lollll. like the south would have formed its own school anyways after, if not before or during the civil war?
hell east coast and west coast magic has got to be different (european settlers on the east, mexican/hispanic in the whole new mexico, arizona, cali area).Â
not to mention historically black wizarding schools would have absolutely been a thing bc african magic survived thru slavery hello??? not to mention under slavery and jim crow laws i highly doubt black children would have been allowed to study with white students. you could even make the assumption that white slavers forbade them for using their magic at all (african magic = dark magic and all that Fun Racism)
underdeveloped and struggling to thrive native american reservation schools of magic in the dakotas?Â
texas has to have its own school on its own school. like its just a given fact. TEXAS WIZARDING SCHOOL QUDDITCH (like texas high school football #texasforever)
and obviously you have the elitist new england schools which everyone assumes is the pinnacle of american magic education lol
The U.S. would have tons of day schools in every region and zero live-in boarding schools.
The U.S. simply doesnât have the same history of live-in âpublic schoolsâ that England has and they make no sense at all in an American context.
PLUS all the stuff listed in this post.
J. K. Rowing has zero understanding of American culture or history.
The thing is, America is so heavily colonized that thereâs no way the magic here would look similar at all to a European or British wizard. First off, youâre telling me Aztecs, Hopi, Seminole, and Lakota peoples (to name a few) would all have the same wizarding traditions as each other? No, I do not buy it. There would have been a substantial diversity between larger tribes.
Now we have first contact and youâd have Spanish and Mesoamerican magical traditions interbreeding heavily into probably a pretty solid fusion. The French tended to trade openly in the Northeast, and likely wouldnât have assimilated as thoroughly as the Spanish but more so than the British who tended to just go âours now, you leave.â
Then come waves of immigration, including the African Diaspora/the slave trade and focusing heavily in the south and northeast. Alongside that, you have French Canadians (Acadians) moving down the Mississippi into Louisiana and giving it a heavy French and Caribbean influence. You have Scotch and Irish immigrants moving into the Appalachians where (in some places) theyâre in close contact with Cherokee and similar tribes, and in others with slaves. We can assume those groups would trade magic thoroughly amongst themselves in the few hundred years of living in close contact. You have Latin American immigration coming up through the south west and bringing their Mesoamerican/Spanish hybrid magic where it would be informed by Creole traditions formed by hybridizing French, African, and Native techniques along with the dominant British traditions. The Midwest tends to be Scandinavian, but again their magic is influenced by people they would have had trade with such as plains Indians and French trappers in the north.
Then, of course, Chinese and Japanese schools of magic coming into California where it blends with traditional Mexican schools. You have Puerto Rican, Italian, and Jewish immigrant communities living in close contact with each other as well as whatever hybrid Dutch-British-African hybrid is going on in NYC. Thatâs not even getting into more recent waves from Vietnam, Laos, and the Middle East, for example.
What Iâm saying here is that not only would American magic look like an unholy hodgepodge to a European wizard, but there would be regional variations within the country that would be almost impossible to even work around.
I mean, say what you will about the French and British, but theyâve spent most of the last thousand years in close contact with each other and you can assume that French and British wizards and witches would probably at least know what their magic looked like. Weâre talking now about cultures spread across the entire globe taking up residence in one area where theyâre now surrounded by people with entirely different traditions. After a few generations, thereâs going to be a lot of adaptation and adoption of techniques to the point that your grandparents wouldnât recognize your wandwork because youâre now using something adapted from a Hmong style with a distinctly Norwegian flare and youre casting it with Incan words.
I mean Jesus, just look at the variations in American food from region to region if you donât believe me.
Why they never talk about no magic home ec class in Hogwarts.
Clearly they have spells for it.
Molly Weasley has knitting needles going, and while house elves do the cooking at Hogwarts presumably they use some magic there to keep up with the giant work load, and iirc, Molly uses magic to cook.Â
So, where the home ec class at. Where the muggleborns with dread in their eyes thinking itâll be a normal like, cooking class, [Harry all excited thinking heâs gonna ace this class or at least do alright, since he cooked for the Dursleyâs], and then the first half the first class is a lesson about how youâve got to earn the respect of your measuring spoons. Otherwise theyâll argue with you on how much has to go into a recipe. Harry has a kind of tentative conversation with his and they work with him after he realized they were an older set used to students forcing them to work for them. Talks to them gently and asks if they think a little more or little less should go into a recipe, or if they think he should add an ingredient now and then because theyâve made the same thing over, and over. Harry trying to make Molly a sweater in return for the one he got because he doesnât know what to do with having gotten gifts, and only really managing a rather lengthy and oddly tensioned scarf made from the best yarn he could find out of a catalog he found on the shelf in the classroom. The professor was just delighted heâd decided to keep at knitting and crocheting [he may have⌠mixed the two] after theyâd finished the unit, to make a gift. Â
Whereâs Hermione having a long drawn out conversation with the home ec professor about how itâs ridiculous to devote magic to knitting when you can do it by hand, and the professor countering about the time saved by simply using enchanted needles or a charm. The conversation takes up the entire period but a teacher actually takes Hermione seriously for once because effective division of effort/time is a very important skill to learn and itâs what theyâre there to teach. Wheres Ron answering all the questions like a fucking CHAMP because managing in his family has basically made his ass a pro at everythingâ budgeting a vault? On it. Spelling how many cauldrons to feed how many people with how much food? On lock like itâs fucking Azkaban. Best herbs and plants to grow for generalâ he has already finished the worksheet/in-class essay that was on the board and is fucking around with his quill. He gets called on, his string bean ass gonna have the answer while kinda being shocked at himself that he actually does, becauseâ like many poor ass peopleâ we manage resources really damn well when we know what we have. And we very rarely let it get away from us.
Whereâs the rich-ass purebloods that know finances and shit because theyâre taking over family blood-line affairs when their older and their parents drilled that into their heads, but canât cook/sew/anything else to save their life till they learn. Where was Oliver Wood trying to make Healthy Food Things for the quidditch team for Extra Energy and just making a mess. The Twins making a totally harmless banana pudding and selling it in their store and NO ONE KNOWING WHAT IT DOES, everyone panicking because theyâre SURE they did something.
We were robbed of so much is all iâm saying.
