When you try to start a book with cool dragon riders but you get three chapters in and you realise you actually hate every single character presented to you so far. Like… they are all arrogant privileged assholes.
“Oh but Lili that’s the point of intrigue! High fantasy is like that, so many books star assholes because it takes assholes to do horrible things to other characters!”
Yeah, but every book that was successful in this niche starts with sympathetic characters, like, some that have the impression of being the little guy. In fact, it’s a trope of the genre for a reason. We want to see this (or those) characters go through the grinder. Will be stay true to their principles? Or lean into the opportunity? But I don’t want to follow the story of the sexy heartless queen that has one billion dragon, or the smug prince that wants to cheat on the girl he’s tricking into marrying to become king.
Lesson learned for my own writing I guess. We’ll see if I pick up the boom again but for now I don’t even want to look at it.
I continue to humanise my pouflons characters. This time, it’s Meloe, an Elyvian adept of lightning magic. He works with Elda sometimes, they used to be friend when they were younger and were both at the army, but nowadays he is tracing his own path.
Thinking about how the person that made me suffer the most in the world gets to grow into a toothless little old man with a Swiss cheese brain that speaks in a gentle voice, and how my half-siblings will one day get to tell me that he wasn’t that bad.
It’s a feeling I’ve been sitting with for while. It’s neither hateful or depressing, but it’s not a happy thought, just a fact I got to live with. It’s just like I don’t hate or love that man because, in a way, time and dementia (? if that is what he is starting to show signs of) will have erased him long before the body in which he lives will die.
What does make me happy is to think about how I got away from him. The peace is unparalleled, never get tired of it.

There is a way cool popular artists talk when they post their art and it’s just as cool and popular as they are. That’s just not how I talk and I’m up late at night wondering if there’s anything about it linguistically or grammatically
Or even where they find the inspiration to write those super succinct description of their art, where you look at it and you’re like, ah, yes, makes sense. Illuminating.
I mean I guess it’s the posts that are well captioned + good art that gets popular. So there might be a bias there. But also you open their page and everything has that same pristine language? They just exist like that. Marketing?
