one of my absolute favorite parts of reading silmarillion fics is when characters get multiple names - and nicknames! when I was still new to the Silm fandom I thought it was a little. um. overboard and kind of crazy how each character will be called by several different names, and that I as a reader would have to keep track of and remember each one to know who is who. but over time, as I've grown more familiar with the names, I learned to love them. it does feel like something very important to their culture and how they interact with language and words.

it's extra fascinating seeing how these names can be used as a kind of shorthand in fics to immediately clue in the reader as to the setting and which side of a particular character we're seeing. my favorite example is of course Maedhros! you just immediately know once you pick up on what name they're referring to him as.

is he Nelyo or Russo, messing around with his brothers and cousins? is he Maedhros, Lord of Himring? is he Nelyafinwë, his father's son? or simply Maitimo?
