why you should read surviving romance if you liked orv:
(it's written by the same author as the makeup artist! another great read but it's very different. you can find it on the webtoon app or... other places on the internet. it's free to read)
i mean i think everyone should read this. but i think orvies especially simply bc it is so similar to orv yet so uniquely wonderful
the premise: after she's isekai'd into a romance novel she was reading as the main character, chaerin eun just wants to live along the plot of the novel and reach her happy romantic ending. but when the time comes for the male lead to confess his feelings for her, things... don't quite play out like they did in the book
i've never written a recommendation post before so here i go! like orv, surviving romance has got
isekai
regression
depression!
but also a lovable cast of characters that are well-developed with their own personalities and motivations
meaningful relationships that aren't centered around romance. the characters form a group of people who all deeply love and care for each other and want to protect each other in any way they can
themes about stories and how people play into them. about how characters can become real people. about how the wall between you and other people can be overcome
also 4th wall batshittery. more than orv even. it’s really good though
but i can't just keep comparing surviving romance to orv. it deserves better. so onto just things about surviving romance that i really like:
there's this theme you'll see about choices. i don't know how to describe it but it's something like: this is your life, and you're the one that gets to live it
the lack of romance! i know i said it earlier, but i'm saying it again because i really value stories that don't place a heavy emphasis on how finding love is your happy ending--in fact, surviving romance very clearly states that finding romance is not the only or the best road to happiness. kudos to the author
the main character! she feels so real to me. she's just a girl and she's trying her best and it's so so hard and she loves her friends and she cries like anyone else does
the suspense factor is great actually i’m always left mildly paranoid about what’s to come
the CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT they all just like grow as people and learn to love? it's brilliant
