𝐎𝐤𝐚𝐲, 𝐬𝐨 𝐓𝐕𝐋 𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 and we’re most likely going to receive more news by SDCC. I need to watch through the season again to get a full grasp on my thoughts, but for initial thoughts… I feel pretty indifferent? I was excited when the show started, and I still had a really fun ride, but there’s a BIG divide between fans who know the books, and fans who only know the show. I’m someone who’s read through the books, so I’m aware of the meta commentary (why it wasn’t titled IWTV Season 3) and why show Lestat deviates from book Lestat a bit.
Book Lestat was trying to set a record straight. TVL novel is a direct “uhm, actually there’s reasons for my behavior” to IWTV, while the show is Lestat wanting a documentary about his band (I never rewatched eps so I’ll need to go back and find the actual reasoning—so much was going on) while also not allowing Daniel to exploit his story or his history. I completely understand show Lestat’s actions and motives, compared to book Lestat’s.
And yet, the show deviated from the book immensely and twisted and folded in other novels storylines (I only ever read through QotD but I know the other books plotlines). I can understand people being upset that we didn’t see much of Lestat’s backstory, but rather snippets. But again I see it as Lestat protecting his story, while also fearful of actually confronting his past—hence “the long table” at the end.
So I really don’t have any major complaints because I see this iteration as an AU. I do wish the story telling was a bit more coherent, with dates given and whatnot to better follow the timeline Lestat is telling us about. He’s a major unreliable narrator, but I think some things should’ve been a bit more clean. I also wish we got transmasc Gabriella, like in the books. But I do adore the commentary on her horrid abuse towards Lestat, and at the end of the season he was finally able to tell her to fuck off and that she’s a monster. From what I recall that was never addressed in the books and brushed off, so that was a great addition to… “fix” something missing in the novels in my opinion.
Other things I love are Claudia tearing Louis and Lestat a new one and saying her piece, Louis getting humbled by her, and that the band got more focus, and of course Armand and Daniel… praying for more devil’s minion in future seasons.
But again, I gotta do a full rewatch to really digest everything, because a lot happened and I got some time in the next few weeks.
