Queen of the Sands

{Greek Mythology is confusing as frick man, but I feel accomplished.

GENERAL

PHYSICAL ASPECTS » HAIR: Gray (with a purple sheen to it actually.) » EYES: Bright green. But her ‘evil eye’ is yellow when in use. » SKIN: Pretty dark. She lives in the desert, it happens. » HEIGHT: 6′1″ » WEIGHT:  Around 190 pounds. This woman is ripped.

FAMILY » SIBLINGS: An older brother named Zelus-- very flirtatious and ambitious. The sort who strives to impress. He puts his soul into everything he does, but while he has skill at everything, he hasn’t mastered anything-- including fighting.

A younger brother named Cratus, who is a powerful warrior-- stronger actually, than Nailah-- but she is a far more fitting ruler than he. He is the quiet, serious, sort-- power doesn’t appeal to him.

A younger sister named Bia. She is very dainty, quiet, and unassuming, but she is brilliant with words. A rock would take her side in an argument. But she is not a warrior.

A younger half-sister named Aithyia. While a capable fighter, she prefers not to, and instead is known for her sharp mind and shrewd wit. She is a brilliant strategist-- one who would give even Soren a run for his money.

She and her siblings get along well, but out of all her siblings, Nailah and Aithyia are closest.

» PARENTS:  Her father was named Pallas, he was a giant of a man-- very blunt and very forceful. Her mother was Oileis, and she was very serene-- peaceful like a river. The two were opposites in most regards.

While both influenced Nailah’s character, after her father slept with her mother’s sister (creating Aithyia), she grew to hate the man. Were it not for her mother overlooking the pain he had caused her and convincing Nailah not only to forgive, but not to hate the child who came from the union, she’d have likely killed them both.

At her mother’s request, Nailah looked over the child, and the two became close. In the end, it was Aithyia who killed Pallas... But that’s another story altogether.

» GRANDPARENTS: She has them, but they’re not strongly important to her backstory. » OTHER RELATIVES: Everyone in Hatari is connected on some level, since they have such an open society; being royalty for example doesn’t necessarily constitute receiving special treatment in comparison to others. However, only a small number of them are ones Nailah would consider family.

Volug is one of them, and Rafiel, though a foreigner, is another.

» ANY PETS?: Does Volug count?

SKILLS » PHYSICAL PROWESS: This woman is made of muscle and she knows how to use it. She prefers to fight shifted-- because she’s swifter and more powerful that way-- but she packs a punch (or kick) unshifted for sure. Stay on her good side, or you’re in for a very bad day. » ABILITIES: Nailah has the evil eye, which while feared in Hatari, is a power she has learned to harness for good. She can petrify people for a period of time with it. In battle she’s a force that demands recognition, and though blunt, she is quite skilled at befriending those she meets. She has far more friends than enemies. » HOBBIES: sparring, running, hunting, picking on rafiel and volug... At home she enjoys spending time with her sister Aithyia... Which basically involves the same things, just with two people.

She does enjoy spending time with her other siblings, but generally only in private situations, where they can act freely.

TRAITS —— POSITIVE ——

As mentioned before, Nailah has far more friends than enemies-- few could say they dislike her despite her blunt nature. She’s got a good head on her shoulders, and good fighting abilities, plus she’s gorgeous and everyone knows it. She has a strong moral compass-- albeit different than most people-- and she’s deeply loyal to those who earn her affections.

Nailah has a temper-- her anger can blind her decisions if she allows it. She holds grudges longer than she should, but she never talks about her feelings, even to the people she’s close to. Making herself deliberately hard to read and hard to talk to makes it so that people don’t ask questions. Her pride keeps her from sharing her burdens.

She’s not picky. » DRINKS: Water is pretty valuable in the desert. » ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES?: Nailah actually prefers not to drink. Alcohol dehydrates, and that’s bad in the desert.

OTHER DETAILS » SMOKES? Nope » DRUGS?: Eh, she partakes in the occasional cactus juice at home. » DRIVER LICENSE?: She’d kill us all. » EVER BEEN ARRESTED?: No one’s dumb enough for that.

The evil eye is said to bring great misfortune to those who see it; illness-- mentally or physically-- paralysis, blindness-- you get the idea. The effects change depending on the person who has it, and so, out of fear, the people of Hatari have always shunned those who bear the curse.

There are of course, wards against the curse-- hence why many in Hatari have tattoos, or talismans that they wear. Other wards include painting the eyelids of newborns black-- to make them less vulnerable to the curse overtaking them-- or the mother to be sleeping with certain objects under the pillow.

In Hatari, it’s very uncommon for one to be born with bright colored eyes, and those who are are considered to be more vulnerable than others to the curse of the evil eye. In such cases, extra care is taken in the hopes of preventing it, but it doesn’t always work-- such as with Nailah.

She ended up with the curse, despite all precautions taken in her younger years.

However, she chose to reject the remedies for it-- despite the fact that people feared her-- because she felt that the ability could be controlled and used for good.

By keeping it contained in one eye, she could keep said eye covered, and only use it when needed-- thus turning the curse into a badass skill.

“Tell me you are not serious about asking me to wear that hideous dress you’re holding.”

“Your potential is impressive.” She commented one day. They were sitting next to each other during mealtime-- this was when people in Tellius commonly spoke, it seemed. “When you are no longer tripping over your paws, I look forward to sparring with you.”

“Hey, I recall you from the war-- the big tiger.”  Nailed that greeting. And Rafiel said she was too blunt.

Volug wasn’t even sure how long he’d been laying there. The wolf had dozed off, head resting in his queen’s lap. He should be ashamed of himself. It was his job to keep watch, after all, but he hadn’t even been able to stay awake. And now Nailah was totally onto him, asking how long she’d been there when he didn’t know at all because he’d been asleep. Lifting his head to look at his queen, his only answer was a shake of his furry head before lowering it back down onto her lap.

“How is queen feel?” He inquired. Volug wasn’t really sure why he’d chosen to speak in the modern beorc language when his grasp of it was so poor, but it wasn’t too important. The only thing that mattered now was that his queen was finally awake, and that she was going to be alright. He’d been so worried before, he was surprised he’d been able to sleep at all.

Nailah heaved a sigh. If Volug wasn’t sure how long she’d been there it had to have been the better part of a day at least-- possibly more given how well her burns were doing. He’d never have fallen asleep otherwise. That was frustrating. She’d been planning on exploring Gallia a bit after the battle, to get a layout of the land in her head-- ending up bedridden put a kink in those plans.... And it probably didn’t make a good impression to the Gallians either.

“I feel fine.” She eventually said, scratching behind Volug’s ears. It was only a partial lie; she felt as fine as one might expect her to, given her wounds, but she’d experienced worse, and it was clear to her that he was worried-- what with those giant puppy eyes he was directing her way. Did he think she’d be upset with him?

“I’m not angry, Volug. Now stop with that face. ” She nudged him aside so she could swing her legs over the edge of the bed and rise to her feet. It sent a sharp pain through her side, and her muscles were certainly sore, but it wasn’t so bad.... She just had to refrain from shifting.

Either way. She was determined to walk it off. Forcing her hand away from her wound, she held her head high and marched towards the door as gracefully as she could manage.
