Because, I don’t know, bickering constantly about the most minimal thing like pets is the most sibling thing ever while supporting each other as a soulmate is not.

I have two older brothers. I love the fucking daylight out of them, I really do. We bickered a lot when we were younger. We see each others flaws and downsides, but you know what, we respect them. Sometimes we clash. But most of the times we don’t: most of the time we respect each other and if someone talks bad about my brothers or visa versa, we’ll fucking stand our grounds and tell whomever talked like that that he or she is wrong and should back off. We protect each other. We fight. We can be so frustrated with each other that we would want to flee to another country, but we don’t. We’re bounded in some ways.  And this is exactly what Romione is all about to me. They clash, they fight, they respect and they protect. That’s brotherly/sisterly love. 

On the other hand: Harry and Hermione are soulmates. If they bicker, they bicker because they care about each other’s health or safety. It’s worlds apart from bickering about lost pets and who’s to blame. Their fights are in no way sibling fights and their feelings are in no way sibling feelings. In no way. They leave each other be, don’t criticize and confide massively in each other. 

I’m just so happy Jo got around. Really. I always knew in my heart that Harmony was canon, because of the characters. It’s just bound to be them, no one else (no Dramione, because that just wouldn’t have been possible because of Draco’s stubborness and background, considering Hermione is a muggleborn, no Hinny because that’s just this “suddenly there’s a feeling in the 6th year because Harry needs to pair with someone”): bound to be them. And I’m soooo, sooooooo glad that Jo saw that. Sooooooooooooooo glad.

Finally: this scene was made up for a reason. Jo knew.

I was challenged by @littleneko1923 to write a drabble based off this (x) post. It’s not long, but here you go. 

Harry made his way through the throng of students in the cafeteria to his usual table. He wasn’t surprised to see Hermione already sitting there, vaguely pulling apart her sandwich. She was staring off into the distance and it didn’t take long for Harry to see what she was staring at; Ron and Lavender.

“You know, that sandwich probably tastes better when it’s all put together.” Harry said as he sat down.

Hermione turned and smiled at him. She looked down at the sandwich scattered across her plate and frowned, but continued picking it apart.

“Penny for your thoughts?” Harry pushed his own food around and stared at the top of his best friend’s head. Her curls shielded her face from him, but he suspected she was still frowning.

“I’m a piece of trash Harry.” Hermione said, then immediately blushed at her uncensored words.  

“Well, as someone who cares deeply about the environment, I am obligated to pick you up.” Harry said without missing a beat. Hermione was now staring at him with wide eyes and a pink blush across her cheeks. “Is seven okay?” He finished with a smile.

A laugh was startled out of Hermione. “You smooth fucker.” She said between laughs. Harry kept his eyes trained on her, but his smile became a bit strained. “That was good, I’ll give you that, but I don’t want a pity date.” she reached across the table and put her hand over his.

Harry licked his lips and looked down at her hand, then back up at her. Without breaking her gaze, he flipped his hand over and laced their fingers together. “It wouldn’t be a pity date.” Hermione gasped softly and her blush was back. “It’s not very easy finding a way to ask your best friend on a date. You can say no, it won’t change our friendship.” He finished and rubbed his thumb lightly over her knuckles.

A slow grin spread across Hermione’s face. “As someone who is also deeply cares about the environment, I agree that you should pick me up. Seven sounds perfect.”

“Harry and Hermione shouldn’t be together because if they did they’d be incest” Did I miss the part where Hermione’s parents are James and Lily too or what? Can you show me?

“Harry and Hermione shouldn’t be together because Ron would be alone” Because Hermione is the only female character in Harry Potter that could make Ron happy/you could ship with Ron? Because the ones that matter are only Ron’s feelings?

“Harry and Hermione shouldn’t be together because Ron loves Hermione” Because that’s Hermione’s character entire purpose? To make Ron happy? So he wouldn’t be alone? Because Ron loves her, she HAS to love him back?

“Harry and Hermione shouldn’t be together because if they did, it’d be boring. They’re too similar” You mean no drama? Well if you find bickering couples (the ones where the girl/guy makes the other cries) are cute, it’s your choice. I can’t say anything.

“You don’t respect Rowling if you ship Harry/Hermione because Ron/Hermione & Harry/Ginny are the ones that she wrote and confirmed in interviews” Well now that Rowling’s said something new… what would you say? What would you do?

This is going to be a rather lengthy one.

It’s been 12 years since I first read the Philosopher’s Stone and I remember I began shipping Harry/Hermione then. Every book I read, I kept hoping that they would end up together. Prisoner of Azkaban was my favorite because it had Harry and Hermione’s first adventure together (aside from it being the best in the series FOR ME). I savored every moment they had in the books, hoping that they would be a couple in the end. I didn’t ship them because they were cliched (the hero gets the heroine) and was the obvious choice. I shipped them DESPITE of them being cliched and was the obvious choice because of their personalities and interactions with each other. As much as Hermione annoyed Harry with her persistence in his studies, he never stopped being her friend. He never stopped defending her from bullies, even saying she’s the best in their year. With all his broodings and sass and laziness, Hermione never, NEVER, doubted and never left Harry’s side. She knew he’d never put his name in the goblet for the Triwizard Tournament, she stuck by him when all the wizarding world called him crazy and a liar, stayed with him even if Ron left during the horcrux hunt. Their loyalty to each other was so strong that no matter what happened (the only fight they had was about the Firebolt and Hermione only tried to help keep Harry safe then), they would always stick by each other’s sides. Ron abandoned Harry twice, every time was because he was jealous and decided to be angry first rather than think.

I liked Ron, don’t get me wrong. He was funny and quick-witted and an essential part of the trio. He was, after all, Harry’s first friend. The first person who didn’t treat him as a celebrity and accepted him. He has saved Harry as much as Harry saved him. But he wasn’t as nice to Hermione as he was with Harry. And I understand how he had always felt second best from his brothers to Harry, but that is not an excuse enough for him to act so selfishly. As Harry’s friend, he had to see and understand that Harry never wanted the attention he was being given. Harry never asked for evil people to come after him. All Harry wanted was to live normally and be accepted unlike when he was at the Dursleys. But no, he had to be jealous of Harry’s fame and wealth.

What’s cliche to me is the saying “opposites attract.” Yes, it may be true in some cases, but it was blatantly obvious that what Ron and Hermione had was not like that. They fight all the time. Hermione looked down on Ron and he, in turn, insults Hermione to the point of tears. How is that a prerequisite of a healthy relationship? I don’t think so. When people say that Ron should be with Hermione because he felt inadequate enough and second best to Harry, it riles me up because are you people saying that for Ron to feel confident and be sure of himself, Hermione had to choose him? That’s not her job. He has to change himself. She’s not an object/trophy that verifies he’s not second best. Hermione deserved someone who would talk to her without insulting her and her intelligence. Someone who’s not afraid that a girl is smarter than him. Harry wasn’t afraid to ask for her help when he needed it. He treated her as an equal, accepted her as she was.

I didn’t start shipping them because of the movies (though I cannot deny Dan and Emma’s chemistry onscreen fueled my ship even more), no. I started shipping them because I read the books. My heart broke when I read Half-Blood Prince because I thought that moment in the MoM in OoTP when Harry thought Hermione died was the fire needed for their canon.

How are we Harmony shippers called delusional by Romione shippers, yet they don’t call the Fremione or Dramione or other shippers the same because they deviate from canon? Why is a relationship between Harry and Hermione incestuous and a relationship between Ron and Hermione isn’t when they are all best friends? How can an orphan know that he loved someone like a sister when he’s never had one his whole life? Stop the hate, please. 

I see that J.K. Rowling has learned some diplomacy skills since 2005 and her post-DH days.

Okay, that’s truly it for the snark.

In all honesty, Rowling has done the best she could to articulate that yes, she wrote what she wrote because she wanted it at the time and acknowledging that it led to some serious flaws in the story.The things she and Emma Watson said about the weaknesses in the Ron and Hermione relationship as well as the strengths in the Harry/Hermione one are all things that we as H/Hr fans have been saying for years upon years. Their quotes could have come from any pro-H/Hr forum or site. The only difference is because Rowling said what she did, we are now no longer delusional and our interpretation of the series is shown to be as valid as anything that might be interpreted by someone with an opposing opinion.

What I appreciate the most, I think, is Rowling stating that her intention had been for Hermione to be the heroine of the series. This is what I have felt almost from Book 1, definitely from Book 3. Hermione was designed to balance Harry, bring the knowledge and planning and brains to even out his physical courage, power, and instincts. He is the Alchemical Sulfur, fiery and hot, to her Alchemical Mercury, liquid and cool, that together become the Philosopher’s Stone to change everything to gold.

This is why the first book fell together so well compared to the trainwreck of the last books. The first book was intended to be a mini-alchemical journey, with Rowling hedging her bets in case she was only able to sell the one book. Sulfur must go through stages with Mercury, the most important of which is the Red Death (the substance changes to this color in old chemical alchemy theory). Ron’s choice to sacrifice himself is the Red Death of this journey and verifies his importance in the first book that fades later on. His sacrifice on the chessboard is what lets Harry and Hermione move on, just as it is Hermione working the solution to the logic puzzle  in a mini-chemical wedding that allows Harry to finish the journey and face Voldemort. Therefore it would have made more sense for Ron to perish in the last book (again in a sacrificial action) and by that sacrifice send Harry and Hermione to victory. Instead, we got Dobby, a loveable and beloved character, but still a minor one compared to Ron.

Harry and Hermione were meant to be two halves of a whole. And some people can complain about “predictable” or “boring” or whatever. But the fact is that our cultures across the globe recognize and reinforce the Hero’s Journey and have done for millennia. To subvert it as Rowling tried to do because she was sticking to her “wish fulfillment”, requires a rock-solid foundation of characterization and setup. We didn’t get that with Ron and Hermione, which is why the ship has always felt weak. When instead of growing up Ron takes a shortcut with a dude-bro book on picking up chicks, when Hermione’s character development is not only halted but reversed to make things seem equal between them, when 19 freaking years later he’s STILL taking shortcuts and lying about it and she is STILL assuming failure on his part…that’s what is meant by “fundamental incompatibility”.

So we’ll see what happens next.The HP fandom has always been huge with room for hundreds of ships. It was only a certain group that pinned their enjoyment of the books to being “right” about canon, led by a fanboy posing as a journalist, rather than enjoying the debate and keeping their minds open to other possibilities. Rowling has done just about all that she could to balance the scales and it is unlikely that she will change the series (though I’d be up for an annotated edition that incorporates these realizations with any material she didn’t include in the original books).

I’ll always ship Harry and Hermione, no matter what.

Just look closely at this moment which is the saddest of the whole saga to me. Harry just discovered that a part of Voldemort lives inside him which means he will have to die. Hermione knew, she always knew but hoped she was wrong. Harry is ready to turn himself in to Voldemort. No, in fact he is not ready at all, but he has to go. He says goodbye to his best friends, but Hermione doesn’t want to let him go, at least not alone. She loves Harry and cares about him so much that she would prefer to die with him rather than live with Ron. She’s ready to give up everything for him once again, and if it’s not love, I don’t know what it is.

Remember when she said ‘We should just stay here, Harry, grow old’? Now her best friend is about to die and she doesn’t see the point in growing old anymore if it isn’t with him.

But of course Harry wants her to live, to be happy, so he tells her not to go with him. Hermione is broken and throws herself into her arms one last time, knowing that she won’t be able to do it another time. She gives him everything to face death, she gives him love, just as Lily did years before. Harry is broken, too. He loves Hermione so much and wants her to know it, he feels so lucky to have met her and is so grateful for everything she has done for him. She protected him during all these years, she gave him friendship, hope, bravery, love. 

She has stuck with him until the very end. 

At this moment, if you look closely at the third gif, you will notice that Harry is about to kiss Hermione because words aren’t enough to express everything he feels. He eventually changes his mind because Ron is there as well and he doesn’t want to hurt him or their relationship, even if he knows he’s going to die in a few minutes.
