drooling at the implications here
imagine his eye color turning to gold. maybe a pink tint/glow to them like a god apple. fingers permanently shiny from holding the fruits. lips too
goes too long without the taste or the buffs eating them gives and gets the shakes. he's too traumatized by the horrors of being trapped and eating them to drown his grief and panic (and just to survive ofc) to tell anyone the truth of why he's shaking
don't even get me started on the parallel of the high from gapple buffs for Phil and the drugs from Cucurucho for forever
it takes ages for anyone to catch on that there's an issue. that there's a slight.. difference to how Phil eats them now
Phil eating gapples is normal, its common. not as common as avocado toast but enough not to raise questions. its fine
but then those closest to him. Fit, Etoiles, Tubbo, Missa maybe despite his absence. they notice he hasn't gone on a toast rant in a while, he hasn't bonemealed the trees or harvested the wheat to make bread and stopped by Tubbo's avocado factory in a hot second. they brush it off at first, stress does things to your appetite after all
but then he asks Tubbo if he can make a gapple factory with the same output as the avocado toast one. that's what tips Tubbo off. naturally he goes to Fit about it, who goes to others about it.
but Phil's just so... hollow. his anarchist zest hasn't showed its face since he escaped the birdhouse. his kids are still gone. he doesn't have the energy or gusto to spar with Etoiles, and Etoiles's dramatics at his rejection don't get him to laugh like they usually do. he feels like he has no purpose on the island now. and he's told them such.
so they feel conflicted about what to do. on one hand, it's not healthy. on the other, it's the only thing helping him cope. one of them reasons there are worse things to be addicted to. at least gapples buff you, at least they're fruit? but with every gapple consumed, Phil looks a little more disheveled. more unhinged.
it's not until they witness him eat a god apple, something he NEVER uses even in most crisis situations, that they all unanimously decide they need to stage an intervention.
but at that point, it's too late
and the only ones who might be able to snap Phil out of it and convince him to go on a cleanse are two little eggs who may or may not be dead.
