my mom is in fact aware that dandelions exist. she temporarily forgot the name and there was some miscommunication.

the truth is actually weirder

she’s aware dandelions look like this

she is familiar with this flower. she knows the name of this flower. she declines to believe, however, that these are also dandelions

she does not believe these are the same plant. I tried to explain, and she thought I was either misinformed or lying. so I asked her what exactly did she think the yellow ones were called?

I feel like trying to identify plants by one name and one name only is just not how oral language works sometimes. It’s fascinating just how varied a single name for a flower can be.

Because common names have wayyy too many variations across regions, eventually scientists were like "yeahhhh this isn't working". Gotta love taxonomists.

But also hearing different common names for things is really interesting to me.

My dad loves to dive a lot and he's swam with a lot of sharks, and one of the sharks he's seen is known as zambezis or Zambezi sharks in Africa (where I grew up).

But worldwide they're also known as bull sharks, and according to Wikipedia they're also known as: "Ganges River shark, Fitzroy Creek whaler, van Rooyen's shark, Lake Nicaragua shark, river shark, freshwater whaler, estuary whaler, Swan River whaler, cub shark, and shovelnose shark."
