The way she translated all the scenes of drunken 3 has me convinced that she actually doesn’t like Wangxian. And using ‘sinister’ and ‘evil’ to falsely describe some of WWX’s actions and smiles, constantly having characters call him annoying and making LWJ ‘chide’ WWX as if he doesn’t like him being playful, or making LWJ seem overly strict and even hypocritical in his words and actions makes me feel like she doesn’t like WWX or LWJ either.

It's not a context thing; it is simply a mistranslation in the truest sense, as the translator wholly replaces one word with another even when there isn't overlap and the story explains that there isn't overlap. #2 in this doc explains the distinction:

Jiang Cheng is one of the controversial points because when The Untamed/CQL came out, a bunch of people became die hard stans and actively bullied people who didn’t like him. A LOT of that came from twitter and hating Wangxian was actively encouraged.

There was a massive incident where JC stans wrote a domestic abuse Wangxian fic, deliberately tagged it wrong as fluff etc. and then took screenshots of the upset comments and mock them publicly. This behavior has not particularly changed. While there are fandom bullies for any character, JC stans have made a name for themselves because of how bad things were a few years ago where the slightest negativity against JC had people harassing you and sending death threats and hate comments in fics. Many many people left the fandom then.

Part of the popularity comes from CQL and its censorship had them cutting away the romantic scenes and adding in Yunmeng sibling stuff which never existed and doesnt make sense in context of the novel. If the tags and fans of CQL had stayed separate, things might’ve been better but it wasn’t and it didn’t.

On tumblr, to stop fandom fights, the people who liked the canon character even made their own tag. For a while; things were mostly peaceful. Unfortunately with things on twitter getting worse, many people migrated to tumblr. The result? For a year now, JC Stans have been making bot accounts to flood that tag and made it unusable, set up accounts directly targeting people who make metas that don’t woobify him until people gave up and decided to use the main character tag again.

A lot of JC’s motivations have been debated and canon quotes used to back up metas. They can still be found. The golden core transfer; was YMJ really weak after the war, the debts and nature of them in the story, Jiang Cheng’s relationship with his mother and impact of Yu Ziyan’s abuse, hating a dead man for 13 years and what it meant for JC to finally let WWX go at the end. Both good and bad of Jiang Cheng because he is a fictional character and a story telling tool.

There’s a lot that has been discussed. But character discussions come from the actual book, not personal feelings and not what a fanfic said by making an AU. Or claiming that I relate to this character so anything you say against them is a personal slight to me. Or making up character motivations that never existed and even state otherwise.

While there are people who hate Jiang Cheng, he is an antagonist so that’s not exactly odd. Like the reasons you stated for Jin Guangshan, Jiang Cheng has done his own acts to cause dislike in the fandom. That doesn’t mean people cant like him, find him interesting or poke at him.

This time it’s ‘oh these JC antis ruin the fandom, they’re just rabid Wangxian fans and they’re ruining Wangxian. We don’t even care about Wangxian, only JC, they’re the ones obsessed!’

JC stanning is built on hating other characters.

Because canonically, Jiang Cheng is an asshole and to make him better than he is, everyone else has to become a hundred times worse.

Wei Wuxian becomes the selfish, self-centred, thoughtless straight guy who has to be ‘taught’ consequences and be set up on dates and treated like an idiot because he’s so helpless. He’s an alcoholic drug addict chaos gremlin on the ‘dark path’ who would be nothing without JC.

Lan Wangji is also selfish, pedantic, hates JC for no good reason, has to be taught humanity and how to be good, he’s classist and pretentious, a careless rich guy who’s naive, violent and obsessive. JC has to be the inbetween and be the gatekeeper of the Wangxian relationship.

Jiang Yanli is a naive fumbling sister who never supported JC and was unfair to him. Didn’t even let him name her child, a horrible sister that didn’t deserve JC.

The sworn brotherhood made between JGY, NMJ and LXC specifically cast out JC as a slight to him so they could overpower him. Poor JC, so alone.

Wen Qing, selfish and a mad scientist who experimented on JC, no care for human ethics, another character who should feel lucky that a JC even liked her in an adaptation, doesnt know what she missed out on.

Wen Ning, should grovel for even existing to JC, a mad dog, should’ve been put down, how dare he even say a thing to JC about the golden core, he doesn’t know anything, blind loyalty to WWX is all, just a puppet. JC should’ve killed him.

Poor Jin Ling gets the worst of it in some ways because he exists as nothing more then to be Jiang Cheng’s cheerleader. The violence that JC subjected him to; the lies, growing up with no memory of being hugged, his uncle with never a kind word or forgiveness and all of it brushed under a carpet of ‘best uncle’. Jin Ling’s own pain and insecurities and emotional vulnerability does not exist because only Jiang Cheng can have those things. Jin Ling only exists to say ‘JiuJiu’ like a beloved pet.

All stuff I’ve seen and repeated and put in multiple fanfics over the years. Every single character being stomped on and twisted into shells to uplift Jiang Cheng and make him the bravest, kindest, most heroic character of them all, smarter then NHS and WQ and WWX, kinder then JYL and WN, more righteous then WWX and LWJ combined!

Why the cultivation world would fall apart if not for him!

How many mental hoops do you have to jump through to place your hands on Lan Sizhui and force uncle Jiang Cheng on him like it’s not the most nightmare of scenarios and still a toss up if he would try to kill Lan Sizhui if he knew he was a Wen canonically. He certainly hasn’t stopped attacking Wen Ning even when the extras ended.

Jiang Cheng cant even stop violently slapping Jin Ling so hard he hits the ground and the expectation is that he’s going to be a caring figure to a Wen??

(It's even funnier thinking that correct political moves exist in a bullshit political system that blatantly serves only the gentry, is held together by hearsay and rumors, and has no actual system of laws that can serve as a basis to accuse, judge, or punish someone.)

So how was JC's refusal to side with WWX and the Wens considered the "correct political move"? Reasons include that the Jiang sect was still recovering from the war, that going against the Jins would result in another war that would end in major losses on the Jiang sect's side, and that the Wens weren't and shouldn't have been a priority for JC at all.

Let's clear a few things up. The Jiang clan was not the only clan recovering, so were the Nies and the Lans. In the aftermath of the war, it's not explicitly stated how well the other sects were doing, so we couldn't really tell if the Jiangs were worse off than the other three. It could be noted, however, that the Jins retained much of their wealth and influence, so much so that Jin Guangyao was able to take the position of Chief Cultivator with little to no opposition. The main point, though, is that at that moment in the aftermath of the war, we could not easily assume the Jiangs were the worst off, as the other three sects also lost many disciples in the war, and we didn't really know how much the other sects recovered.

For the second reason, if a major war somehow did happen again, this time Jiangs vs everyone else, everyone else would lose. WWX's presence single-handedly helped them win the war against the Wens. A war between the Jiangs and the jianghu would be based on numbers, which reflects the war between the Wens and the jianghu. The Wens had more disciples, and no matter how many LWJs or NMJs you got up your sleeve, numbers make a big difference in war. That's why WWX's skills were a critical part in winning: he is a one-man army of thousands. He could easily make up for the gap in numbers. That's why the Jins kept trying to get rid of him—they were nervous about so much power belonging to only one faction: the Jiangs. JGS couldn't exactly claim his desired role as Chief Cultivator if a younger, smarter, and more powerful individual was still around to keep him in check.

Finally, we get to the part of why I'm making this long-ass post on a caffeine-driven rage. See, the point of trying to stop a powerful faction from committing atrocities is to stop them from thinking they can do it whenever they like. The Jins were given a pass to do whatever the hell they wanted to a small, outcasted faction (the Wens), and they proceeded to take that pass as a pass for everything else. Nobody stopped them from torturing the Wens, so what's stopping them from allowing a mass murderer like XY to run wild in an attempt to create their own WWX? Definitely not NMJ, hahaha, because, y'know, the hypocrites in the gentry have already decided that whatever the Jins do is alright so long as it's not their problem. An exterminated clan isn't their priority. So, what was stopping XY from going out and doing it again to SL's sect? Absolutely nothing! Because the Jins could cover it up and no one could say a word despite how suspicious it was, because hey, remember what happened to the last guy that spoke up against the Jins?

Calling out the Jins on their crimes against the Wens, who were elderly and children save for WQ and WN (who JC owed his damn life and core to), would have created a precedent of not allowing massive crimes to slide under the radar. But because the opposite happened, because nobody fucking realized that apathy and selfishness don't fucking help in the long run, two sects were exterminated because JGS and JGY were basically given an "okay, fine, just keep that bullshit away from us". That's not actual justice. That's not "morally grey". Allowing people in power to trample over others just because it doesn't affect you personally is not sustainable, because what happens when it's you they've decided to trample over? Are you going to complain? Are you going to look to others for help, when you personally couldn't be bothered to offer your hand to those who suffered? When the reason the people trampling over you gained that power is because you allowed it?

This is one of these scenes that truly stick as Wei Wuxian rescues the Wen remnants and is caught by Lan Wangji. After a verbal dispute, Lan Wangji is left shaken about the events and what is truly right/wrong and lets Wei Wuxian go. At this point, CQL Lan Wangji is very clearly shown to be questioning everything and not stopping Wei Wuxian is the most he can bear to do.

The problem is that after reading the book, Lan Wangji doesn’t actually fit the scene at all. And the scene doesn’t exist in the book for good reason.

Lan Wangji in the book is not some naive, spoiled youth blindly led by rules, or someone questioning what is right or wrong at a base level. Instead there is an entire extra detailing how even as a teenager he would go out and help people even if it meant sacrificing what he quietly wanted because his sense of responsibility means he will try to help where he can. We also know how even as a young child and his mother dead, he refused to move, defying every person, even Lan Qiren, waiting in the snow so he could see his mother one more time. He was called Hanguang-Jun by the people because he travels the lands and would go and help even if it was just a minor case and ignored by larger clans because it gave no benefits to them.

Nothing about Lan Wangji, Hanguang-Jun speaks of a man confused at witnessing cruelty, or human prejudice, discrimination or people fleeing from tyranny. The man just went through a war! He saw his sect attacked! And yet, in The Untamed, Lan Wangji is shown to be completely lost at being questioned by Wei Wuxian, when the truth is that if Lan Wangji had witnessed the camp and been with Wei Wuxian, he would’ve done the same with him. He would not have just stepped aside and dramatically stood in the rain as Wei Wuxian risked everything to save innocents. He would’ve gone with him.
