Hello, tumblr! I saw something on here the other day that worried me, so I decided to Do Science about it. But I can't do it alone: I need your help to build the dataset!
Here's what I need you to do:
If you see a post with a "mature content" label, and it's 2026, DM me a link to the post.
Yes, that's really it.
I am hoping to collect several thousand such posts, so that I have a decent sized dataset. I do not care what the post is about; if it's labeled as "mature content", I want to add it to my dataset.
If I get 10,000 posts in my dataset before August 31st 2026, I will post my preliminary findings then. I won't feel comfortable calling my findings "settled" before 2027, unless I get over 50,000 posts.

people being upset about ty having crushes on anyone other than kit but not caring about kit having crushes (and even dating) other people is just infantilizing autistic people. in this essay i will-
It's something I was thinking about and it's so annoying because hes gay and he can have a crush before Kit and he certainly can after because HELLO it was 3 goddamn years and he thought him and Kit would never make up. And he has also likely assumed Kit no longer has feelings for him and it's natural to move on and have other relationships/crushes etc. He very well could have had a boyfriend between the events of qoaad and tlkof him and Kit never fucking dated and Ty doesn't owe him shit! Ty could have very well even had sex in the time in-between cuz he's literally nineteen! Not fifteen not a child he's an adult in tlkof and I think people need to calm the fuck down. Ty doesn't owe Kit "loyalty" or whatever the fuck people want from him! Hell Ty doesn't even have to love Kit back he doesn't owe him that I think people forget that a love confession in a book just like in the real world doesn't need to be reciprocated. Ty didn't have to say I love you to Kit because he had just met Kit like 3 months prior and he was also going through a really fuckin hard time if someone confessed love to me after my sibling died and I was in the middle of necromancy I wouldn't say shit either! Because it was incredibly bad timing and there was no way that Ty would have been emotionally prepared for something like that in that moment.
I obviously ship Kit and Ty but I also demand that they are treated equally. The only reason people are being weird is because Ty is autistic and you can't change my mind!
Maybe this is a hot take but I get the vibe that people are oversexualizing Kit and infantilizing Ty
my dearest fellow mdzs stans, i really don't want to spoil anyone's fun but sometimes some things must be said. please do NOT mistake fanon characteristics for canon characteristics because by GOD is it frustrating to dissect a character when all anyone wants to do is blindly turn away from the very vivid and metastasizing flaws.
jiang cheng is an extremely complicated character, and that's why we love him. but by god, he is a jealous, self-victimizing asshole with a massive inferiority complex who likes to torture (probably) innocent look-a-likes of his (as far as he knew) dead adjacent family member. jesus christ this isn't some simple case of miscommunication (well it is but, you know no amount of communication will ever mend the giant chasm that developed between them. especially not with asians raised within the most classical case of asian parenting, i mean come on now) but a matter of deep and intense self-loathing developed since early childhood projecting violently outwards. let me be clear. he hates wei wuxian. he loathes him. he wants to kill him with his own hands again and again so some part of his convoluted sense of justice and superiority will be fulfilled. he's a classist, a bully, and abusive to everyone around him. ong at the end of mdzs, i was nearly crying tears of joy when jin guangyao flayed him flat on his ass bc that man needed to hear it. he needed to feel it. he needed to stop blaming others and blame himself.
and!! he's homophobic!! the entire cultivation world is, yes, but he's the only one we see give wei ying and lan zhan active shit for it!!
point is...his complexity makes him interesting. as a child, he was pretty alright tbh. he was understandably upset when three of his dogs got taken away and he saw his dad give a completely random kid such a gentle hug when jiang cheng never received one so far. he was a kid, and it was sad and helped the readers get a glimpse at the already dysfunctional family dynamics before wei ying came into the picture. as an adolescent/teen, yes he had a lot of unresolved rage and inferiority issues building up when he was constantly being compared to wei wuxian by his mother and not given enough reassurance from his father (once again, all present before wei ying...everyone just likes to dump the shit on him bc it's easier to point fingers at others than at yourself). perhaps he could have turned out differently if literally either of his parents stepped up and took accountability. however, after the burning of lotus pier? after the golden core transfer? after wei ying stuck around as his subordinate just as he promised, and protected jiang cheng like he promised, and defected just to save the yunmeng clan's reputation so jiang cheng doesn't have to put up with the other clan's shit, still continuing to keep his promise? after wei ying's death? idk abt y'all, but all bets are off bro.
mxtx makes it a point to make him so irredeemable. he's an exploration of what can go wrong if you let your traumas, self-hatred, and revenge fantasies blind you. he has the worst traits of his parents for a reason, directly contrasting with the other sibling, who is a perfect picture of eldest daughters born into a dysfunctional family. jiang yanli has the best traits of her parents (in terms of compassion and standing up for her family), but the family dynamics also made her the way she was. the responsible, the mediator, the occasional mother, stepping in where madam yu cannot.
there's just so much potential to hold him accountable buried under the pretense of misunderstandings and kinnie moments. he just had so many chances, more than any other character, to make a different choice. to actually look past his misgivings and unlearn the bad habits he used to protect himself as a child. i'm not saying he has to magically heal from all his traumas, but at the very least know not to be like his parents. but he wasn't written that way. because that is what happens when you give into your insecurities and generational trauma.
bottom line: jiang cheng is a fantastic archetype that needs to be explored in all his authenticity, including his moments of loyalty and cruelty.

the thing about wei wuxian’s victims is that calling them wei wuxian’s victims in the first place is nebulous.
that isn't to say those who died or were bereaved after nightless city or the first siege of the burial mounds weren't hurt by wei wuxian’s retaliation. but calling them "wei wuxian’s victims" while ignoring that cultivation society scapegoated and hunted him down, and that wei wuxian never attacked without being threatened first, is a massive oversimplification.
sure we have minor characters like the cultivator who lost his leg or the cultivator who lost his parents, and sure mxtx writes them as part of a mob of more unreasonable people who were largely not even present for these events, but the thing is... there are major named characters who were present, or who had loved ones there, and their grief and pain are given full attention by the story. they're called jiang cheng and jin ling.
my sister/my mother died at nightless city because of you! except no, jiang yanli actually died because an entirely different nameless cultivator stabbed her, and she intentionally pushed wei wuxian out of the way to protect him out of sincere love. it wasn't the first time. she already demonstrated this when she stood up for him and called him her blood brother in front of her fiance and his family at an event they were hosting, when she had zero backing support and could've easily been dumped and had her marriageability ruined for speaking out of turn.
who's to say that jiang yanli's death wasn't the only instance of cultivators dying at nightless city from friendly fire during all the chaos? we don't know. the one thing we do know for certain is that once it was all over, the survivors attributed the (dubiously counted) thousands of casualties to wei wuxian alone.
saying that wei wuxian was the sole cause is overly convenient for cultivation society. in particular the major sects politically did not want to help the wen remnants and were content to mistreat them in forced labor camps. they thought that wei wuxian was too dangerous with his unique ghost path of cultivation and use of resentful energy, so they gathered everyone up and tried TWO different times to assassinate him. the first time just killing wei wuxian alone. the next time, taking all the remaining wens out with him.
there's a lot left unsaid about these major battles and sieges which leads to a lot of our discourse as fans to begin with-- we have such limited information about all these major events of the past! and unfortunately for us, that's the point!
that's the thesis of the book! the details of the pain and grief you go through don't actually matter! regardless of it, you have to eventually move on. you have to actively choose good, to do what you think is right for the sake of doing the right thing, and not just to act based on your idea of fulfilling debts or deserving to be repaid a certain way!
what everyone claims as indisputable facts about wei wuxian are actually skewed not only by rumors, but by politics. mxtx doesn't depict these various randos to give them a brief beat of sympathy. nor does she do it just to make wei wuxian look better.
they are there because they are also angry and bitter, stewing in the past looking for someone to keep blaming (wei wuxian; the cultivation world decided thirteen years ago it would be wei wuxian) and demanding recompense from him. jiang cheng does the same for the entire damn book.
jin ling breaks the cycle; in spite of the rocky start he eventually chooses to trust wei wuxian and argue on his behalf even in front of his elders. even though he's the heir to a major sect. even though he has been taught his entire life to despise and be angry at wei wuxian for orphaning him.
mdzs is a complex story. it also happens to be a black and white story without gray morality. there are many what-ifs, actions that went poorly or circumstances that would've shifted the course of events if only things had gone well for everyone, but nobody acts in a legitimately morally grey way.
throughout the novels there is a clear delineation between good and bad, righteous and wrong; wei wuxian is clearly the former in both cases not because mxtx wanted to more easily depict her protagonist as a good guy, but because she consistently bases these dichotomies upon the fulcrum of hypocrisy.
supporting the use of resentful energy via ghost cultivation to kill your political enemies in wartime and then immediately turning on the person doing so for you once the war is over, blaming all evils on him and trying to get him killed because he's trying to help the few survivors of the opposing side (both because it's the right thing to do and to pay back a life debt he secretly owes that only two or three people know about, oops)-- that is hypocrisy.
if wei wuxian does it and we like it, it's expected of him and he deserves no praise, though he handles it all with charm and stride befitting the son of the illustrious cangse-sanren.
if wei wuxian does it and we don't like it, he's a murderous evildoer, the ungrateful and dangerous son of a servant (whose name we conveniently never say even though we all know who wei changze was).
mdzs is a book about the hypocrisy of the upper class. mdzs is a book about grief. mdzs is a book about society and rumors and politics and the pitfalls of chasing after what you are "owed". mdzs is a book about love and sticking to your own path and principles. wei wuxian is its protagonist, and by the novel's own values, he is indisputably good.
i think it is very easy to interpret jiang cheng as a kid who grew up being invalidated and constantly unfairly compared, who feels never good enough etc, but that is extremely surface level analysis. when you read it like that, you ignore the root of these things, which is classism. on yu ziyuan's part, it NEVER was "wow jiang cheng, wei wuxian is better than you". it was "wow jiang cheng, the SERVANT'S SON, wei wuxian, is better than you". on jiang fengmian's part, it was never "wow wei wuxian is amazing he really understands our sect i wish he was my son" it was "great, wei wuxian really understands our sect, he will be an excellent subordinate for my child. jiang cheng, you are to be yunmengjiang's sect leader, so you have to understand what the sect represents. let me try to explain it to you". jfm attempting to teach jc is not equivalent to jfm hating jc. he was trying to prepare him for his future. let's please not forget that it was yu ziyuan who always got mad whenever jfm tried to teach jc. now, i do not think jfm was a great person nor parent. but his crimes were never comparing jc and wwx, nor wanting wwx to be his kid, nor favoring wwx. if someone does good and receives praise, that is not favoritism. if someone needs accommodations to be able to function (getting rid of dogs), that is not favoritism. if you correct someone and attempt to better them, that does not mean you hate them and think the other person is better than them.
i think one of the most wonderful traits of wei wuxian is how socially competent he is, which is why it always annoys me if he is mischaracterized as someone who is unaware about how those around him feel, just because of the way his relationship with lan wangji pans out in the books. the dynamic between them was extremely multifaceted and what seemed obvious to us was very rightfully NOT obvious to wei wuxian and he hardly had time to sort those feelings out, given the kind of harrowing ordeals he was going through. but that aside–the way wei wuxian’s “social competence” manifests isn’t just social courage–in that, the risk of embarassment or self-consciousness doesn’t stop his self expression–or just his general forwardness and social butterfly tendencies but also–and imo, most importantly–his perceptiveness and astute reading of people around him which comes from a deep understanding of the human social element, at the individual and the societal level.
he has full awareness of how his station is looked down upon in the cultivation world and so while others in his situation may bend or break–wei wuxian cleverly toes the line between the two until taking a stance becomes necessary. he deeply understands the ugly dynamics running within the jiang family and clan and acts accordingly–be it his prompt efforts to placate jiang cheng or his conscious silence when madame yu is in a mood or even his acceptance of the whipping in lieu of restoring stability for the clan. despite his personal biases against jin zixuan, he can recognise his bravery. even his scandalous move to begin undressing in the cave shows that he knows exactly what would make lan wangji tick.
hell, i’d say even his initial thought about how the resentment of the dead can be redirected towards a target shows his striking comprehension of how emotions work in general. what’s more, he’s able to recognise the machinations nie huaisang had employed and he was also aware of the bigger picture associated with how fickle and easily swayed mob mentality was when everyone took part in bashing jin guangyao when certain truths came to light. when he was first brought back to life, he quickly and correctly deduced what kind of life mo xuanyu must have led and how he could act in order to easily humiliate the mo family. he empathised with jin ling and yet realised how he was brought up left something to be desired and so, tried to inculcate some of his own highly regarded values to him.
the deft manner in which he handled the juniors speaks for itself–a good teacher will always have good communication skills and wei wuxian went above and beyond just “good”. his people skills on nighthunts are extremely helpful–his ability to make tongues loose simply by charming people is highlighted more than once. just off the top of my head–him politely appealing to jin guangshan about the wen remnants and apologising for “intruding”, him readily handing in his sword at the indoctrination camps, him suggesting to jiang cheng that he should leave the clan once he was at the burial mounds–all of this (and much much more) demonstrates wei wuxian’s competence at guaging complex social dynamics, which is why, when he goes against the current and stands firm, it is a deliberate, well thought out decision, one made after considering the risks and repercussions, and that makes wei wuxian’s stance at the end that much more powerful. he is not stumbling his way through life, is not unheeding of his social status, is not a “mad genius with poor social skills”. hell, i would say wei wuxian’s ability to see straight through people is more impressive than even his insane intellect and to reduce that aspect of him feels like a disservice to his character. because when it comes down to it, the fact of the matter is that the murky social world through wei wuxian’s lens is actually astonishingly clear.
to be more precise, wei wuxian was immediately attracted to lan wangji after meeting him as he was already chasing lan wangji and daydreaming about him the next day. meanwhile, for lan wangji, i think wei wuxian was initially a 'disturbance' in his life of order and restraint, a splash in the midst of his calm and still waters. at worst, he was annoying and at best, he was interesting. what really started to pique lwj's curiosity seems to be wwx's bold answer to lqr in class as it showed that wwx is as brilliant as he is mischievous. but i think attraction came for lwj during the time they spent in the library. wwx charmingly annoys lwj into liking him. in other words, wwx wooed lwj. but lwj is shy and probably unsure of wwx's sincerity. and this attraction grew as he observed how wwx lived such a carefree life. my guess is that he became aware of his feelings some time before or in the beginning of the indoctrination camp. and then wwx's careless words in the xuanwu cave must have strengthened his resolve to never let wwx know his feelings as wwx babbles about not liking men and how it's not lwj he's flirting with anyway so why is lwj so bothered. any by the time he hums a song to wwx, lwj has fallen in love.
back to wwx. like i said, he was already all heart eyes about lwj from the very beginning. there's no theorizing needed tbh, he basically lists everything he found attractive about lwj in his recount of their first meeting. he admires lwj's beauty and skills, and even his widely talked about intelligence. and while his words make it seem like he was annoyed about being caught and lwj enforcing the rules, it was also actually something he admired about him. wwx had met his match and, at the same time, he admired that lwj was firm and true to his principles. even lwj's cold look was attractive to him. by engaging in a fight with him, lwj had unknowingly shown a side of him that wwx never heard in the stories about the other twin jade of gusu lan, and it made wwx want more. i think wwx was already in love with lwj before he left the cloud recesses, he just didn't know it yet.
tl;dr: their game of chase in drunk 2 represents how their love story started—wwx chasing after lwj until lwj finally let himself be caught.
Wei WuXian was planning to catch him, not at all expecting that he’d walk right into his arms. Speechlessly startled, he even forgot to reach out. Seeing that Wei WuXian didn’t do anything, Lan WangJi lifted his tied-up hands and brought them over his neck as if he voluntarily slipped into an unbreakable trap, “You caught me.”
Wei WuXian, “… Huh? Yes, I caught you.”
As though he was waiting for something to happen but it never did, Lan WangJi repeated the three words again. This time, he enunciated each word with heavy emphasis and sounded anxiously eager, “You caught me.”
Wei WuXian, “Yeah. I caught you.”
He caught him. What else?
This shouldn't be a hot take because Wei Ying when he first met Lan Zhan, he was already enamored with Lan Zhan. The Cloud Recess study arc was literally him being a little mischievous boy who wasn't aware of his crush toward another boy due to societal expectations, but he still did all the annoying things to get that boy paid attention to him. The way he praised Lan Zhan and constantly talked about him, to the point, even Jiang Cheng noticed something was off with Wei Ying's "obsession" with Lan Zhan back then.

alien stage and zombie stage both critique the idol industry, the only difference being emphasis and the main metaphor they use to explore it. the alien poses that idols are alien: another breed of creature, held separately from yourself, and dehumanised because of it. it primarily concerns the conceptualisation of the other. the zombie poses that idols are zombies: an evolution of a human into another form of being, and are objectified by literally turning into an object. we primarily see the harm it causes people when they turn into zombies - both the spiritual and physical annihilation of the self.
the criticism in alien stage extends itself into analysis of people's intimate relationships under hostile environments - each person is alienated from each other because they are taught to treat each other as images rather than people. children are taught specially in anakt garden to be idols: their self is immutable for marketability, their sponsor is god, and others are competition. their relation with their selves and others are warped by this structure, naturally warping their idea of love by extension. this is the most identifiable theme of alien stage since it is spoken aloud to us via mizi's monologue. but it is of importance that this theme is built on a foundation of criticism of industry, the nuclear family, and religion.
zombie stage's criticism leans more physical and literal, as is the nature of the more realistic setting and therefore more direct commentary of the current pop idol industry. topics such as sexual exploitation are explored in more detail instead of being mostly implied in alnst. similarly, the dehumanisation in alnst is presupposed within its setting - humans are aliens, animals, pets - but in zomst, the process of being dehumanised is shown to us. zombification as a metaphor focuses on the body and manifests the trauma of being turned into a product physically. for this purpose, zomst diverts from classic zombie tropes of rot to gemstone, so the zombies may be commercialised based on appearance to be used as criticism of the idol industry. the main idea behind zombies is mostly preserved in translation, ie the consequences of eternity on human nature, but the idea of living beyond death takes on different meanings within the context of the idol industry and capital. the apocalypse in zomst is not the destruction of society, but a reaffirmation of it.
these metaphors do not work without considering the constructed context around them. we must understand alien/zombie as idol, and the stage as the world in which they inhabit. title drop spinning gif go
current fan creation landscape is kinda like if you went to a party with a homemade cake and everyone takes a slice and silently thumbs up at you with no attempt to start a conversation except for occasionally some guy sits in the corner with a tape recorder critiquing the cake as though he was a restaurant critic and another guy is handing the cake to an uber driver like "yeah i need you to find a restaurant that makes cake like this so i can have more of it" and the only person that's talked to you in 30 minutes is a very sweet little guy who was like "hey i liked your cake" and then ran away apologizing for bothering you the moment you said thank you.
someone brought a cake analysis robot to feed the cake into to determine the exact ingredients and supposedly it can spit out the exact same cake. and if you're like dude. what. then they're like well if it bothers you you should have made more cake. i'm hungry and i deserve cake. and you're like dude we're at a party.
This is fucking terrifying: Google is implementing Android Developer Verification, a program that would require all developers to register with Google before distributing apps on Android starting September 2026. There is a widely-circulated narrative that Google already backed down from this. They didn't, and that misunderstanding may be the most dangerous part of the story right now.
This will kill open source. This will make it easier for governments to ban apps. This will mean apps will have to abide by what Google deems acceptable.
Also, deleting Google Play Store does NOT mean you're safe from this. YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO DOWNLOAD AN UNVERIFIED APP ON YOUR ANDROID PHONE, PERIOD. To use an example from the video: it's the equivalent of preventing you from installing a .exe on your computer.
Google is controlling more and more. This is censorship. Fuck this shit.

man sometimes friendship really is just "I saw this and knew it would give you psychic damage. please respond with agony" and then they do. and it's great
