Yes, he can be a petty asshole, he can be mean and inconsiderate, but most of the time he's really doing his best to be nice and helpful. He wants to love and be loved. To belong somewhere and to someone. The problem is that he doesn't know how to get there.

He was raised to be a killing machine even before he was turned into a literal monster that kills people and now he hates having to resort to violence. If he really has to, he prefers to use his bravery, strength and strategic mind to protect others from harm. That's when he really shines.
