My first piano teacher, Miss Judy, brought the JOY of learning to play the piano. She taught by the book but threw in fun things and duets played with her that sparked the JOY, but my family moved away.

My second piano teacher, Harmon, brought the lesson about public relations vs JOY. You learned a song note by note so you could impress at a recital. There was no JOY.

There have been three pianos.

My first piano was just an old upright, a nothing-fancy piano with a rich, strong sound that brought me JOY but Mom gave it away and got the second piano.

The second piano came from my Aunt but it didn’t sound so sweet, still it was pretty and I grew attached. It brought me JOY.

I played James Taylor and Buffy Sainte-Marie songs that I loved and taught myself to play them the way I wanted though Harmon told Mom it was cheating but that was okay with me since I had JOY. HA!

One day my cousin came and loaded up that second piano, since it used to be hers and she wanted it back. I was out on my gypsy trail but it gave me no JOY to learn they had taken it away.

Mom bought the third piano from my Uncle because he was sick and needed the money more than the piano, which at least did give me JOY to know it helped him out.

The third piano doesn’t have a bad sound but it doesn’t have the rich tone of the first piano and it’s not pretty like the second piano. I have it now but I don’t play much anymore. I have these stiff fingers and I guess you could say I’ve lost the JOY.
