One thing the Bowser Jr. fight scene does is provide a crystal clear example of how Mario’s bravery makes him a better solo-fighter compared to his brother, even though the bros are pretty much equally matched in terms of raw skill.
In this situation they’re both on the defensive; unarmed with their teammates dazed. When Mario’s up to bat he’s good at keeping his eyes on his opponent, staying mostly on his feet, and giving himself room to manuever despite Junior’s efforts to back him into a corner.
Luigi, on the other hand, is frenzied and panicked. He displays an equally fantastic ability to think fast and use his surroundings to his advantage, but he has such a strong “run and hide” instinct that he trips over furniture, falls flat on his stomach, corners himself under furniture, and eventually turns his back to Junior in an attempt to flee– which is what ultimately got him pinned and vulnerable.
Anxiety legitimately nerfed the poor guy.
