In Defence of Makorra and Korrasami
... I am so tired of the idea that a ship has to be Canon for you to ship it.
I love Mako and Korra. I think they could have been a really good couple. But that's not what the story shows and I'm okay with that. They are instead really good friends. They might even have a bit of a queerplatonic relationship, which I actually really like the idea of.
But saying: "I have nothing against LGBT representation, but I think they would have worked a little bit better." When it was shown that Mako and Korra had a very dysfunctional relationship even before they started dating... Is kind of blinding yourself to what actually happened in the text.
Again you are allowed to ship them, I do too! But being ignorant of why the story went this way is my problem with this argument.
The point of the relationship is that it could have happened. It could have been something great. But they were hurting each other. And they both, mutually I might add, agreed to stop seeing each other so they wouldn't hurt each other anymore. They knew they couldn't compromise and so they decided to break up.
That. Is. FINE.
But don't come over here and say that Korra and Asami shouldn't be together because "it's not your ship". That makes it sound like you think gay people in media are a commodity and that just sounds really shitty.
For all of you respectful shippers out there, no matter what ship you like, I applaud you. And I have been in fandom for a very long time and I know this kind of behavior will not change. I think I do have the right to complain about it though. π
