     “NO, I’M —   i’m fine. really!” she offers a weak smile, rubbing her eyes with balled fists. “i’m just... tired, is all.” 

consider: a few months or years after she’s been ladybug. maybe hawkmoth is getting frustrated, or impatient, and people are being akumatized almost daily. or maybe someone got hurt once during a fight against an akuma. marinette is, like, constantly on red alert. she’s always exhausted, because she’s always out as ladybug and she can’t juggle schoolwork, a social life, and a full night’s sleep. she’s distant from her parents because they think she’s never home, and she’s even pulling away from alya and her friends. her grades and her attendance are slipping. she gets alerts on her phone from every paris news outlet, and sleeps with her phone next to her on full volume because what if someone gets akumatized in the middle of the night? she feels guilty doing things like going to the movies or travelling out of town, because what if someone gets akumatized and she doesn’t realize? 

like, marinette is SUPER serious about the ~ rules ~ of being a superhero, mainly regarding their identities. if she was somehow forced to or accidentally revealed her identity, she’d feel HORRIBLE. she’d feel so guilty, like she messed up. and even if chat was the one who she revealed herself to, she wouldn’t want him to tell her his identity. just because she messed up and broke the rules, doesn’t mean he should too just to make her feel better, right? 

imagine marinette skipping a few days of school because she’s made herself sick with the guilt, so adrien couldn’t even talk to her if she wanted to. and she’d got her balcony door locked and all the curtains drawn, because she knows chat’s likely to come by. if she had to transform as ladybug she wouldn’t look chat noir in the eye, and she’d disappear the second they were done.

i need to write a proper meta about like.... how SERIOUSLY marinette takes the so-called rules, even if she doesn’t necessarily agree with them (ex. keeping rena’s identity from chat noir, even though i haven’t seen that episode yet LMAO). she’s always the one who’s telling chat they can’t reveal their identities. she needs to have like a looooong talk with master fu about how she’s only human and shouldn’t be so hard on herself and it’s okay to mess up or bend the rules a little
