II. BIOGRAPHY
Lucius doesn’t know who was his mother, as Lord Blackwood never openly discussed the matter with him. He wasn’t even raised by her, given to a nursemaid a little after his birth. Whether his mother died in childbirth or if Samwell Blackwood wished to maintain her identity a secret (due to Lucius’ birth out of wedlock), remains unknown to him. In his teenage years, he did find a lock of golden hair between the pages of a book of romantic epics that used to belong to his father.
Despite his status as Samwell’s bastard, he was raised alongside the true-born children his later wives bore him.
His legendary skill with a bow and arrow was immortalized by Maester Gyldayn after the First Battle of Tumbleton. He was never a naturally talented archer, his skill developed from persistence alone. he was obsessive as a boy of nine or ten, wishing to stand out in something. He nocked arrows until his fingers bled when he practiced his aim. His finely polished skill has earned him the monicker of The Bowman of Raventree, and he’s revered as one of the greatest living archers of this era.
As the favorite son of Lord Samwell Blackwood, he was privileged in ways other bastards could never dream of; yet being an illegitimate son also granted him a certain leeway that none of Samwell’s true-born children were ever granted. It was unspoken, but the same rules didn’t apply to him. He played his separate roles of lord’s son and outsider bastard when it suited him.
III. PERSONALITY
Lucius might be the only one who sees the late Samwell Blackwood in a more favorable light than his siblings. He justifies a lot of what their father did as the means to an end, something that isn’t so hard for Lucius to wrap his mind around since he operates in a similar way. For him, it’s acceptable to transgress moral standards for a higher purpose.
In a nutshell: Lucius was shaped by Samwell’s presence in his life, while his siblings were shaped by his absence/neglect.
A devout believer of the Old Gods, religion plays an important role in his life. It shaped so much of who he is, but also granted him the dangerous trait of believing his deeds are driven by divine purpose, that everyone and everything is the will of the gods. He thinks he’s divinely justified in his actions, with the thought process being “if the gods didn’t want me to do it, they would have stopped me”.
Lucius has come to believe that there is something almost divine in destruction and in violence. The Old Gods are mighty beings whose essence lies in creation and destruction, so operating on those avenues is quite close to their divine nature. Lucius just happens to lean towards the latter more than the former, and his violent impulses can be so uncontrollable that it feels something else takes over; like a moment in which the gods take hold of him and use him for their will.
IV. CONNECTIONS
House Blackwood: Lucius has a good relationship with his half-siblings. He’s protective of them but not overly so, aware that they too need to battle the world on their own when necessary. Ben and Maggie have a way of grounding him, while he definitely is less composed with Meri, who sort of marches at the beat of similar drum as he does. He has a particularly complex relationship with Ben, who is both his little brother and his superior, who is someone that can be his greatest ally and strongest brother-in-arms, while also being a young boy who can make critical mistakes.
Willow Wylde: Lucius openly dislikes her and doesn’t see the purpose of keeping his father’s widow around. He never calls her Lady Blackwood or Lady Mother, only Lady Wylde. Wylde Widow too, when he’s feeling more combative towards her. He thinks she’s obviously vying to have her son as Lord of Raventree Hall, yet Ben is the clear heir and rightful lord. He doesn't even see Willow's children as his siblings and would rather see anyone else in the seat of Raventree Hall than Willow's offspring.
Dacey Stark: Surprisingly, Lucius actually gets along very well with the princess despite their opposite personalities.
Wanted Connections: Please don’t hesitate to reach out on discord to establish some of these: friends, enemies, brothers-in-arms from the Riverlands, one or two past relationships, drinking buddies, anything!
