In the chaos, Amelia fights to save the wounded as Bucky shields her from enemy fire, tearing the Red Cross from her sleeve to keep her from being targeted. When Captain McCallister is shot, the two carry him through the mud under relentless attack, only to be surrounded and captured before they can escape.

Taken to a hidden Hydra fortress in the Alps, the survivors are divided and imprisoned. Dr. Arnim Zola and Johann Schmidt recognize Amelia from Project Rebirth and threaten her with the same Terrigen crystal experiments that turned other soldiers to dust. When she refuses to cooperate, Hydra drags her to one laboratory and Bucky to another. Both endure unspeakable torment — she survives exposure to the Terrigen mist, awakening with unstable, inhuman power, while he endures the beginnings of Hydra’s psychological conditioning.

By the end, Hydra fails to break them completely. Bucky clings to the sound of her voice as his final anchor, whispering a plea through blood and static: “Please don’t let me forget her voice.” Though both are remade through pain, their humanity — and their love — survive where science and cruelty could not.
