Thought I’d share my ace flag I made as a collage for this first week since I just found out about QueerWorksFridays! :) You can see more of my work here! I’ll be adding more pride flags soon.
(Second comic for Ace Awareness Week) AAW day 2 - about my process of discovering I was ace.Â
(See first comic for general info about asexuality here)
I drew some flag deers for pride month !Â
Be proud of who you are !
you can use them if you credit me
My Asexual Story, 2018.
Another little autobiographical comic I whipped together (this was drawn in like two hours tops so don’t judge the drawings lmao). To clarify, I am in a happy long-term committed relationship with a non-ace girl and we’re both very happy with our relationship, and I have never had bad experiences with relationships because of my asexuality. Being ace isn’t a big deal to me - I barely think about it - but asexuality is something that a lot of people seem to have trouble fully understanding, so I wanted to take some time to describe it the way I see it in my life and from my perspective. Every story is different - here’s mine.

Inspiration: Top 25 Annual Report Designs
ADAD1002 Assessment 3 Research C
So more on interesting publication layouts. This time around, all these publications have to do with annual company reports. Usually when one thinks of company annual reports, one thinks of boring text-laden books. However this page features designs that you would not expect from a formal publication. The IMC annual report is a fine example of this. The green and red filters on the page are used literally to ‘filter’ certain pieces of information on the page. Our group is also using filters in a way to instead make relevant information invisible through the use of image editing techniques.
Assessment 3 - Experiment
I tried to use colours to represent memories in this experiment. This experiment may be quite different from what we did before, but we hope this can inspire us to use other ways of expressing our ideas.
In this experiment, I selected some of my previous illustrations, and then used the colour picker to see what main colours did I use in those drawings. The result is my colour usage changed, I tended to use blue and purer colours before but is fond of using pastel colours recently. I think the use of colours of an illustration can somehow reflect the personality and the mental status of the artist, therefore those colours can be a visual representation of my past. I remembered I like using brighter colours before as I was much happier when I was 12 and 13, and tended to use darker colours in 2015 and 2016 as I was stressed at that time. Now, I am fond of using pastel colours as I was highly inspired by one of my seniors in my high school, who is good at using pastel colours. She has a great impact on me, not only my colour usage but also my values and goals. Colours can really tell a lot even though it seems simple. We found this experiment quite different, but it helps to explore the relationship between colours and memories. We will try to consider the colour used when creating our publication.
Assessment 3 - mind map
The topic of assessment 3 is ‘Now’, and our group drew a mindmap regarding it. We came up with different ideas when drawing this mind map. When talking about ‘now’, we also think of ‘past’ and ‘future’, as ‘now’ is about time. We discussed the definition of ‘now’ too, and we think now can be an obsolete idea because it continuously sinks into the past. Every present moment will become parts of the history and nothing is eternal. We also talked about what we should focus on in this assessment, and we are interested in the idea of ‘memory’ for the time being. Just as we mentioned before, every ‘now’ will become part of our memories, and will influence our future. Even though we treasure the present moment, time will just keep moving on without waiting for us. Everything will change and become the past. We found the topic of ‘memories’ is interesting and might discuss the definition of ‘now’ and the relationship between people and time in this assessment.
Assessment 2 – Final work & statement
Statement: My topic for assessment 2 is also ‘glitch’, and the final work I made is a decoration filled with colours. I started with making a reflection on my assessment 1 first, and I thought the 3D drawing I made before was not good enough. As I realised creating a 3D drawing needed a lot of time, I then tried to create my work by using photos and this became my first experiment. I was not satisfied with the result so I tried other ways of expressing ‘glitch’ in the experiment afterwards. I then used digital software to edit photos to make it look ‘glitched’ in experiment 2, but I only tried to invert the colour of some part of them at first. After I did an experiment on changing the colour of photos, I found that I could also try to play with colours to represent ‘glitch’. By changing the original colour of things, that things became abnormal as their colours were unnatural. As people tend to refuse accepting abnormal things and consider them as weird, this can be related to ‘glitch’, as glitch means a small problem or fault. I could also explore possibilities of colours by these experiments. I then came up with the idea of playing with colours and discovering the relationship between ‘irregularity’ and ‘colour’ in the later experiment. However, I should know what does colour means and look at other artists’ works before doing more experiments, so I did some research on basic colour concepts and related artworks to get some inspirations. For the research on colour concepts, it helped me to think of the choice of colours, such as how can I make the combination of colours looks more attractive and harmonious. While for the research on artworks, I did research on Kristen Handelmann’s, Candace Campbell’s and Josie Lewis’s work as they are used to create colourful artworks. As their artworks are abstract, this inspired me that I could just try to play with colours itself, instead of drawing specific objects or just changing the original colour of something, while this inspiration changed the direction of my experiments afterwards. I was also highly inspired by Campbell’s work, as I liked the way she played with paint. Her choice of colours was attractive and bold, and the patterns in her works were random but beautiful, therefore I found her artworks were really charming. I then decided to do an experiment on painting something similar in order to learn or practice the way of using colours. After doing research, I continued on doing experiments, but focused on playing with colours. I tried to mix paints by palette knife and put paints that are not well-mixed on plastic stones, and I thought it was somehow similar to the way Campbell paints. I was satisfied with the result of experiment 4 and decided to use this way to create my final work, and would focus on exploring the relationship between colours and glitch. I then created a small paint in experiment 5 and stuck it in different places. As I put it in places it was not supposed to be there (e.g. toilet, mirror, white wall), and the colourful paint was a contrast to the monochromatic background, this could represent irregularity in some ways. My final work for assessment 2 is a decoration that plays with colours. Inspired by Campbell’s painting, I used palette knife to paint my work as the outcome has some similarities to her painting, and my choice of colours has also considered the colour concepts I have learnt when doing research. Unlike the painting I made in experiment 5, this decoration is much bigger and is a long rectangular, as the glitch we saw in computers or smart phones is usually rectangular-shaped. I painted this decoration and put it different places in the house I am living, in order to bring a big glitch to the reality. To me, colour represents hope and beautiful things, and this is the reason for me decided to play with colours in this assessment. Many people are feeling stressed or have to face many difficulties nowadays, while experiencing happiness and hope have already become an abnormal thing. Therefore, I created this decoration, aiming to put those irregularities back in our life. I hope others could smile or feel better after looking at my work.

Assessment 2 – Experiment 5
I used the same way of playing with colours in experiment 4 and create a little painting. Although blue and pink are not analogous colours nor complementary colours (what I have learnt from the research I did before), I chose to use these colours as I thought the outcome would be interesting.
After finished this little painting, I stuck it in different places in the house I am now living. I did this because it was related to glitch, the painting was not supposed to appear in those places. I wanted to add some colours to the place I am living too, and tried to make the place more colourful. As I found in assessment 1, glitch means ‘a small problem or fault’ or irregularity, and I hope the work I made in this experiment can reflect the idea of ‘glitch’.

Assessment 2 – Experiment 4
I haven’t tried to paint any works that are similar to Campbell’s work before, and I thought I had to paint all the details myself if I want to do something similar. I was worried about my experiment but I was inspired when doing my painting assessment.
When I was doing my painting assessment, I used a palette knife to mix colours together (just as the video above). I then found that the paint looked beautiful when they are not well-mixed, and was similar to the outcome I wanted. I then tried to put paints that are not well-mixed on plastic stones.Â
I think the result of this experiment is interesting, as I found a new way of playing with colours. I think what I should do next is to think of how my work or experiments can relate to glitch.
Assessment 2 – Research
I have found some artists who are used to play with colours, and their artworks inspired me a lot.
Kirsten Handelmann, Picnic with firs, acrylic on canvas
Candace Campbell, Untitled, 2017, mixed medium, <https://www.instagram.com/p/BYFYwmhAb-J/>
Josie Lewis, Untitled, 2017, watercolour and pastel, <https://www.instagram.com/p/BYLS-b8nW9j/?taken-by=josielewisart>
Josie Lewis, Untitled, 2017, acrylic and oil paint, <https://www.instagram.com/p/BYyjeukHzrO/?taken-by=josielewisart>
Unlike the experiments I did before, these artworks are abstract. The artists didn’t draw or paint a specific object, but just played with colours and came up with really beautiful works. This inspired me that maybe I could just try to play with colours, not just changing the original colour of an object. They also used different media and ways to create their works. For the media used, some of them used watercolour and some used oil paint, while some made a 3D object. Their works also gave the audience different feelings, such as Handelmann’s and Lewis’s work looks more calm and tidy, while Campbell’s work is bolder. In these four artworks, Campbell’s work is my favourite as it is the most attractive to me. I like how she played with paint randomly and the use of colour. Her work is just like a photo of the ocean in unnatural colours (maybe it’s somehow related to glitch) and the outcome is really beautiful. I wanted to try to make something similar in my experiment.
Assessment 2 – Research
Before doing more experiments on colour, I think I should know some basic concepts and theory about colour first. I did some related research on a website (https://www.colormatters.com/color-and-design/basic-color-theory), and I found it was really useful.
This website explains concepts such as the colour wheel, colour harmony and colour context, and the colour harmony part really helped me to think of the choice of colour. It mentions what are analogous colours and complementary colours, and using these combinations can make our work looks less boring or chaotic. Although I like drawing, I seldom look for colour tutorials and am not confident of my choice of colour, so this really helps. I will try to consider the colour scheme of the work in the later experiments.
Assessment 2 – Experiment 3
James Peale, Still Life, 1924, oil on panel I continued playing with colours but tried to use another way to do the experiment. I printed James Peale’s painting and cut out some part of the photo, then used colour pencils to draw the missing part, but in unnatural colours.Â
Actually, I think the outcome of experiment 2 looks much better, but it’s interesting to change the colour by drawing the objects by myself and without using digital software. Maybe I should try more ways of playing with colours.
Assessment 2 – Experiment 2
I tried to edit photos by using digital software in this experiment.
I inverted the colour of some parts of the photo in the first two images, and I thought these images looked like photos that were glitched. I then tried to find other ways of making similar outcomes, and changed the colour of some part of the photos in the following three images.
I changed the colour by adjusting its hue, value and chroma, and it looked much more interesting than just inverting colour. In this experiment, I was inspired that I could try to play with colours, such as exploring the possibilities of colour and how can colour related to glitch.

Assessment 2 – experiment 1
I tried to draw a 3D drawing in assessment 1, but I found that drawing it was quite difficult and had to spend a lot of time. So I tried to try using photos to make my work in experiment 1.
I printed some photos of fish then cut them out at first, then stuck those paper cuttings on the wall. I chose to put fish on the wall because it is impossible for fish to live without water, so it could be somehow related to my topic ‘glitch’. Although the result doesn’t look very good, I think I can use this as my starting point for assessment 2, and try to explore other ways of expressing my idea.
Assessment 1 – reflection
After presenting my work for assessment 1, my tutor gave me some feedback. There is something I can improve the work for assessment 2: 1) I can do more experiments before doing my final work – Though I did a research on illusion art, I didn’t do any experiment it. This caused the failure of my final work (the picture is not 3D enough). I can try to draw some 3D drawings for my assessment 2 later. 2) The poster is not very relatable to the topic – Others may not figure out what is the topic of the poster at their first glance. I should also consider the audience will understand my poster or not, and how can I make the poster looks more relatable. Â
3) Can do more research – I can do a deeper research on illusion art and Trompe-l'œil. What are the features of these artworks? What can I learn from them? 4)  The 3D drawing is not 3D enough – Should practice more. 5) Should do some practice before presentation – My English is not very good and I didn’t present my work fluently in assessment. I should do enough preparation and practices before presenting my work next time.
