âCanât you see the no diving signs?â
âHave ya ever jusâ wanted to get away? Like⌠book a flight at the last minute anâ jet off for a bit? Even just for a couple oâ weeks? Jusâ for a changeâŚâ
âIf I could afford it, yeh. But I canât and I doubt Iâll ever be able to at this rate. Where you thinking of going to?â
â-What dâya mean that wasnât a snog? Your lips were right on mine!â Finn argued, knowing what heâd felt.
âIt was a âfuck we live together but I still havenât seen you in monthsâ snog. Not like it hasnt happened before.â
âDo you really think that kissing me is going to help?âŚâ
âNo. Youâre right, I need to find someone straight. What the fuck was I thinking?â

âLook mate, Iâve got no idea what you just said, cause honestly Iâm a bit knackered, but I can tell ya what, it sure sounded uninteresting and human.â
âYou all right there dude?â
âEverythinâ hurts,â Roxy groaned, barely even able to lift her head off the pillow.
Lucas went to the hospital as soon he could after the roads had cleared and he was able to get there. âBut at least youâre alive,â Lucas breathed out feeling relieved.
âHey, come on. Cheer up. I got a spliff and an empty. We could listen to a few tunes and have a laugh.â
âIâm not really feeling it. Sorry Lea.â
Lea is surprised by the honesty, especially after only having been reunited. One of the biggest problems Lea had with Lucas when they were together was his lack of honesty. He kept things inside and it was like pulling teeth to get information out of him. Although she was relieved he was being honest, she wasnât happy that things werenât going well for him. Although theyâve had their fair share of drama, Lea only wanted the best for him. âI-Iâm doing.â Lea couldnât talk about herself, not now. âIâm honestly not doing too well either.â She shrugged, but instead focused on what Lucas was saying. Hearing the story now, she could understand. She understood how important it was to be a good friend and Lea appreciated that about him. âI get it. I do.â She nodded, looking at him, expression soft. âI appreciate you saying all of this. But I needed you. I love Lise but I needed you there. And when nobody but Lise came to see me, I felt like nobody cared about me. I felt like maybe I didnât have the friends that I thought I did. Like maybe nobody cared about me. It felt like the final straw and, so, I left.â
Lucas reached over to slowly take hold of Leaâs fingers. It was nothing too romantic just his fingers curling around hers. He wanted to show her heâd changed. Maybe even that sheâd made him a better person. He wasnât always good. Two-timing two girls for stupid reasons was a bit of a downfall, but his mind had changed. And his heart too. âIâm here. Anything you need, Iâm here. As your friend, as your enemy, as whatever you want. Itâll never change.â He breathed out. He didnât want Lea to be unhappy and didnât like to see her that way. âNo, you were always loved. More than anybody. People just didnât know or got caught up in their own stuff. It was never that nobody cared.â Lucasâ head dropped to the floor again. âThings couldâve been so different now if I was there huh? Guess Iâll always regret that.â
Lea laughed, brows raised as if she were surprised herself. âI know. Didnât even know Iâd come here myself.â Lea had left London in such a hurry and hardly knew where she was going at all. She had some money that she had saved from working and her brother lent her a fair amount as well to keep her on her feet. She found a monthly rented flat, though it was a bit shit, and decided to stay for awhile. Coming back just seemed right. Lea continued to stare at him, as if she was looking at him for the first time He looked different and yet the same â it was a feeling she didnât know how to describe. However, when he spoke again, Lea didnât know how to act. Of course she missed him too, missed him more than she cared to admit. She had been so angry with him though and that wasnât a feeling she could rid herself of. âMe either.â It was all she could say, her gaze dancing over his features. âHowâve you been?â
The old Lucas would lie and say he was fine. Heâd say he was always fine and hide the truth. But Lea had taught him how to open up. âThings only seem to be getting worse for me, to be honest. A lotâs happened. How about you?â Sometimes he wished he had his old lack of emotions because it was always easier that way. But there didnât seem there was a way to get back to that. It wasnât like he hadnât tried. Lucas looked to the ground. âLast time I saw you....â He gulped and looked back to her face. âEllie was unwell. And I knew how it felt to be in her position. You taught me the compassion that led me to care for her but caring as a friend was all it ever was. Ellie and I have never even been that close, I just wanted to help somebody for once.â He looked around the club making sure nobodyâs attention was on them. âBy protecting what she didnât want anybody to know I hurt you and Iâm sorry for that. I didnât know what else I could do,â he shrugged. âThen I felt like turning up at the hospital would make you hate me anymore. So I gave you space and I let Lise deal with it on her own. I shouldâve come for you. Probably more stupid for saying all of this here but I have to say it because I didnât get chance last time and I donât want to lose this chance too.âÂ

The voice practically sent shivers down her spine and she could feel the sudden pounding of her heart, now slowly turning to gaze at him. Looking at him now, it felt so long ago that she had last seen him. She had left with no note or no phone call and while she knew she should have said something, her heart just couldnât take it. She had been in hospital and the only person that came had been Lise. Finn was excused â he had no memory after the accident â but what was Lucasâ excuse? After she got out of the hospital, she packed her bags and ran. It was all she could think to do. âHi stranger.â She finally said, her eyes dancing over his features.
The last time Lucas had seen Lea was at the party where he went home with Ellie. He had offered to take her home after finding out she had an eating disorder just like he had. He had always felt terrible that he couldnât tell Lea why he had done it and felt too guilty to go and visit her in the hospital. âYou were the last person I expected to see here.â He felt overcome with nervousness. It was an emotion heâd finally started to feel in the recent year. He wasnât a whole lot like the person he was when he first met Lea anymore. Heâd had to do a lot of growing up. âI always hoped youâd come back. I donât think you ever left my mind.â
Lise was dripping wet and shivering more than she ever had before when she walked back into the bar. Her back felt like it was about to collapse and her breathing felt as if it was about to stop. She spoke to the first person she saw. âI just⌠Roxyâs just been run over. I couldnât get to her in time. Itâs my fucking fault again.â
Lucas was so shocked at what he was hearing Lise saying. Heâd been so horrible to Roxy ever since Rufus had come back and he suddenly felt guilty for it. Sheâd just broken his heart and everybody knew he didnât deal well to that. âIt isnât your fault. How can it be?â Lucas kissed Lises head to comfort her. His eyes looked outside. âI canât get to the hospital can I? Was she....alive?â
âThis is typical English rain, right? Right?â
âYeah just a bit of drizzle.â
Lea had returned to Lincolnshire and, honestly, she wasnât sure if it was a good idea or not. After what had happened to her in London, she couldnât decide where to go. Her home in London felt out of the question and all she wanted was a place she felt comfortable in: all she could think of was Stamford. Even though she left so much drama in Stamford, she knew she needed to return. Maybe this place could save her.
She wasnât sure if this storm was any indication of what was to come but it was dangerous, rattling her apartment. The windows shook and she could feel the draft enter beneath her doorway. She had heard of the party but she hadnât wanted to go, mostly because she wasnât sure how it would go seeing old faces. But being alone made her uneasy and she couldnât do it another second.
She managed to get to the bar, albeit soaking wet. Luckily for her, she lived only a block away and found coverage, away from the trees. As soon as she walked in, she made a beeline to the bar. âVodka. Lot of vodka.â She ordered, wringing the water from her hair.
Lucas hadnât really planned to go to the party. Heâd lost contact with Alexis and Faye -maybe theyâd found out heâd been seeing them both - and after everything with his parents recently he was in no mood to celebrate anything, especially things containing the word love. Unfortunately enough Lise had dragged him along as her date. Quite literally dragged.
Heâd been sat at the bar alone having the occasional conversation, but couldnât believe his eyes when the familiar face walked up to the bar herself. He walked closer so slowly that she wouldnât realise until he was next to her. âHow much is a lot of vodka? Because I think Iâve drunk so much of it Iâm seeing things.â
Lise & Lucas
When Lucas suggested showing up at his parentâs door claiming to be himself, Lise had other plans. She didnât want to risk them throwing the door shut in their faces without Lucas being able to say a word. The two climbed out of her car onto a street sheâd never seen in her life and walked up to the correct door. The look in Lucasâ eyes said the place had already brought back memories so she gave his hand a quick squeeze before anyone in the house could see. With Lucas about a step behind, Lise knocked on his parentâs door, putting on a confident façade. When his mother answered, she threw on a posher voice; one more similar to the one she was born with. Sheâd made it fade over time. âHello,â the redhead greeted. âIâm Anna Marks.â It wasnât particularly a lie. It was half her name plus her legal surname now she was marred to Jim. ââŚAnd this is my little brother. James.â That one wasnât as creative. She turned to look at him for a second. âHe was lucky enough to get the blonde genes. Anyhow, as it happens, my car has just broken down outside your house and we are awaiting someone to come and deal with it. We have come all the way from Newbury and weâre absolute bursting to use the loo⌠could we perhaps borrow yours?â Lise was no stranger to lying her way through life. After an initial no, she managed to flash her smile and beg a little more and get the two into the house. âTold you Iâm a genious,â she whispered in Lucasâ ear.
When the approached the right street it really felt like Lucasâ back had become stuck to the seat and unable to move. He was silent when they got out and walked to the door. He didnât really allow any eye-contact with him Mum. His heart just started beating faster and he felt sick to the stomach. He wanted to grip hold of Lise and pull her back to the car but sheâd already marshed her way into the house by the time he could stop her. Why did she have all the talents of making parents love her but not him? âI canât do this,â Lucas whispered back. His Mum left them at the downstairs bathroom and went into the living room, presumably talking to Lucasâs Dad. Breathing quicker than he ever felt like he had before tears grew in his eyes. Being back in that house was something heâd never thought would happen again and it was too much. He went into the bathroom to compose himself and get rid of the tears and then came back out when he was ready. But when he came out he found his Mum coming to join him. âWould you like a drink?â she asked. Lucas took a second to answer. He wanted to say no but he knew Lise would probably kick him up the arse. âYeah. Thank you. Two coffees if thatâs alright.â He wore his confident smile and walked into the front room where he shiver upon seeing his father too.

Annalise playfully pushed Lucasâs head out of the way. âWhat an insult. Saying I look like your face.â She shrugged at his question. His parents did seem very harsh but so were hers in their own way. âFamilies can be chosen. We act like bloody siblings. We just need to find the rest of our family. Itâs hard, but you donât need someone who sqeeezed you out of their vagina. You know what Iâm saying? That might be more hard work than I ever wanna put in but it canât be half as hard as the rest of it. The stuff they couldnât be arsed with.â
Lucas shook his head and laughed. âBlimey you say youâre rubbish with people but you always know what to say..â He thought for a moment and went quiet. âIâm gonna give them one more chance. Iâm gonna visit them. Will you come with me?â
Roxy rolled her eyes at Lucasâ comment but didnât give a retort back; he already looked upset, she didnât want to add to it. âIâve missed ya,â she said honestly with a smile. She glanced down at the letter, not being able to read it from where she was sitting but not believing him anyway. âIf it wasnât a big deal, ya wouldnât have a face like thaâ. Ya know ya can tell me anythinâ, donât ya?â She placed her hand on top of his. âHonestly.â
Lucas ignored the âIâve missed youâ comment. He failed to believe it for even a second. âItâs just my parents doing non-parent-like things. You know, teeling me off for sending Christmas cards. Once upon a time I stopped thinking about them. I thought I could have a new family, of my own. But that got spoilt. I got pushed aside. So please donât pretend you care when you made everything worse.â
