Almost exactly the same thing happened with regards to evidence for sexual cannibalism in mantids! In more recent times, scientists re-did the old trials that “established” cannibalism being a common thing, only with the mantids in settings that mimicked their natural habitats and gave them a place to be under cover [instead of putting two mantids in a jar bare of anything that resembled the habitat they were used to], and involved females that were not starving, and virtually no cannibalism [or even behavior where the male tried to flee as quickly as possible] was observed during those trials. Not to say cannibalism in mantids never happens; it’s just rare enough that the whole thing about sexual cannibalism being normal behavior in mantids is an unfortunately common misconception. It also tends to be Mantis religiosa that cannibalism is more regularly documented in, and somehow that single species gives the rest of the 2,400 species in the order Mantodea a bad rap.
