"Suguru, have you lost weight?" Satoru asks me. I look up at him and see the genuine concern on his face. "You okay?" He continued to ask, "I'm okay. I'm just fatigue from the heat." I respond back to him. After all this time of eating Cursed Spirits, Satoru still didn't know about it. He didn't know about how tired I been, how much these cursed spirits fatigued me. How they tasted like swallowing down a dirty rag used to clean up shit and vomit. The question continued to pop up in my head, "Who am I doing this for?" Exorcise, Absorb. No one understands me. As much as I wanted a world where Satoru wouldn't be considered a weapon, I continued being a jujutsu sorcerer. I continued to protect people from these cursed spirits, while proceeding to exorcise and absorb them. Just to stay on Satoru's level.
Suguru has been acting weird lately. It's not even winter anymore and he's wearing his winter uniform, something is wrong. I just can't figure it out. Was he upset that we weren't the strongest together anymore? Or was he upset about the death of Riko? Was it both? I wish he would just tell me these things but sometimes I feel like he feels isolated.
I sit down with Suguru on the steps, Holding his favorite food. I offer it to him without saying anything. All he does is stare at me before saying, "I'm not hungry at the moment." I stare at him blankly before asking him, "are you hot in that uniform? You should probably take your jacket off." Suguru didn't respond. All he did was stare at his feet with those now tired eyes. My face almost shows concern before I cover it up with a smirk. "So... you busy after school?" That must've gotten Suguru's interest. "Well I suppose I'm not.." Suguru responds. I start to speak again before Shoko comes over and sits next to us, taking my glasses I left on the step behind me. "So, what are you guys up to after school?" She asks. Perfect timing. "Well, I don't really know, I was gonna figure out what Suguru was doing so-" Shoko cuts me off. "Of course, I should've guessed you guys were doing something together." Suguru speaks up finally, "well if you'd like we can all do something together. Perhaps the movies?" I smirk at that idea. "Say less!" I say excitedly. Shoko seems to be amused at our dynamic, I see right through her.
Satoru has been noticing a few things about my behavior recently. I hope these didn't get in the way of his missions. I stare blankly at my desk, I keep overthinking it. "Who am I doing this for?" Was it for me? Was it for Satoru? Was it for Riko? Was it for everyone? All of a sudden, Satoru shoves my shoulder lightly. Sitting in the seat next to mine, He didn't seem to notice my overthinking.
"Suguru, you missed out this weekend. How come?"
I stare at him before putting that smirk on my face I knew he liked to see. "Perhaps I just didn't feel like coming." Satoru smirked back seeing how I acted. "Aww, what's up. You too cool to hang out with your best friend?" Shoko sitting next to us rolled her eyes. "We all know that you guys have a thing for each other." Satoru almost blushed a little bit before they started arguing loudly as Yaga Sensei came in. Oh Satoru, if only you'd understand my feelings. Perhaps this love could be true.
It was now lunchtime again, Monday. Every week I sit on these steps, the ones that looked too similar to the ones Satoru came down holding Riko's body. The same face I'm making right now, as he contemplated killing everyone around him. I stare down at my feet thinking about it. Feels like a cycle, sitting down on these steps, overthinking, and then looking down at my shoes. Almost like exorcising and absorbing. Satoru comes and sits down next to me.
"Suguru... you're making that face again."
"Come on, just tell me what's wrong. I can handle it. We'll handle it together, we're the strongest remember?" I finally look up at him. The fact that Satoru still called us the strongest like we're equals when we all know it's opposite. Like it meant something. "I'm just feeling a little tired." I respond back to him finally. Satoru would know better than that weak excuse I made. But I knew he wouldn't say anything about it.
