Deborah Ann Woll for Rogue Magazine (Spring 2016)
We want people to see us as strong and competent. But then there’s the person that we are afraid we truly are. Which is scared, and hopeless, and incompetent, and overwhelmed.
While all the other superheroes can fly, and kick, and punch, and throw lightning at people as their way of finding justice, Karen has to do it with her brains.

Elsie’s grip on her backpack straps tightened as she trudged through the streets she thought would be familiar, only to figure out pretty damn quickly that she hadn’t the slightest idea where she was. Stupid, stupid. Her first instinct was to pull her cell phone from her backpack and ask her father - oh, but that would ruin the surprise, wouldn’t it?
She let out a soft whine as she bit her lip and repeatedly tugged on her backpack straps. Where am I ,where am I. She recognized the sigh for the pet store but other than that she was lost. How did she even get out of the airport? Did she really let that nice man pay her cab fare?
Wait! Arthur and Molly would help her out! But where was -were- their place(s?) in relation to here? Were they living together or apart now? Hell, she didn’t know. She was in Korea for a year. This was bad, very bad. Didn’t Appa say one of her uncles worked at the pet store? Mm, but she didn’t know how to get there, either.
Deep breaths, deep breaths - she looked up and around, eyes wide and searching for somebody to ask for help. And finally, she made eye contact with someone, it didn’t matter who. Even if she knew them she didn’t recognize them in that instant.
“저기요. - omo, I-I mean,” English, Elsie, you’re not in Korea anymore kid, you’re not getting help this way. “Excuse me, I need help. Do you know where er, Sommerset Street is? Or St. Barclay’s Hospital? I need to speak with Sungmin Chang, um, he’s a surgeon there? I, uh, I’m lost and don’t know how to get…not here.”
Long. Day. That was all that Molly could think as she made her way back home, walking because the job that day hadn’t been too far from her flat. Of course, the people she’d been doing a job with had been complete and utter idiots, treating her like she didn’t know what the hell she was doing simply because she was a woman--and god, did Molly hate assholes like that. It rubbed against her nerves the wrong way, and she sneered at everyone that she passed by through the unusually crowded street, eyes set on the Shade in the distance.
Then, of course, she had to make eye contact with some kid. Great.
Molly sighed and stopped as the girl went over to her, about to tell her off but pausing when she recognized Sungmin’s name. “Minnie? What are you looking for him for?” Molly finally took a moment to look at the person she was speaking to, eyes widening when it finally clicked into place. Without the anger, it was easy to realize who she was talking to, and Molly smiled for the first time in hours. “Elsie? Look at you, it’s been forever! How’d you get here on your own, sweetie?”
“Don’t tell me you’re getting jealous now.” Arthur said with a smirk, ignoring the fact that just moments prior he was the one who actually felt that pang surge through his chest. It wasn’t that he necessarily felt like there was exclusivity here, you know, he was aware of how she likely had… other people as much as he did, but emotions had a way of betraying the truth and right now he hated this as much as he loved it. As it was, it took a great deal of effort to maintain cool and composure in front of Molly. “Aw, man, and here I was thinking I already got too much competition. Can’t say I blame ‘em… but I will say that I’ll fight ‘em if I have to.” He chuckled, a little more dry than he wanted, but he was well aware of some things that the Prewetts have gotten up to and what else they were capable of; Molly was definitely capable of worse, they both knew it. “Y’know, this is why I don’t leave you alone around my shop. All those guns and bombs… I reckon you’d half blown this place to bits by now.” When she closed the gap, the calm fell away as soon as those lips touched, the hunger and the desire practically dripping from point of contact. It took so much out of him to even pull away after a while, a little out of breath and definitely coming to regret that, but grinning at Molly all the while, their noses still touching. “You’re one hell of a woman, Molly Prewett, anyone ever tell you that?”
“Me? Jealous? Why, I would never.” That, of course, was a complete and total lie, because when it came to Arthur, god could she be just that. Jealous, possessive, wanting; their relationship was open, but she still couldn’t stop the emotions from reeling in her when she saw Arthur with someone else (never mind that she herself had someone else in her life, her mind briefly flashing to Remus). “Especially not of our boys. Don’t be absurd.” Her grin widened when he said he’d fight others who looked at her, a sense of pride flooding her. “Would you now? My hero.” Then she laughed, imaging all that she could do if Arthur let her have free range with the weapons in his shop. “Oh, most definitely. Don’t suppose you’d let me try some of them out, would you darling?” Molly relished the kiss and hated when Arthur pulled away, wanting to grab his shirt to pull him back in but resisting. This was her family’s bar, yes, but it wasn’t the place. Not now. Still, their noses were still touching, and Molly chewed on her lip, looking up to meet Arthur’s eyes. “Once or twice. Anyone tell you the same? Because you definitely are, Arthur Weasley.”

“Good, good. I’ll have a word with the boys.” He would, of course, but this was not the past - there was no La Familia to speak of and they didn’t care for each other, not really, not at all. “Two weeks? And here I was thinking we were a classy lot. What a pity”, he said jokingly, despite his deadpan expression. Really, all that bound them was cold hard cash and Alastair’s job was to keep a steady flow coming, not to baby pricks who couldn’t tell where their tricks would work and for how long. Even so said pricks did make him money… “It may, Molly, darling, it just may but they can’t pay you if they don’t have jobs, can they now? This ain’t no social service I’m running here.”
“Start before ten? I’m haven’t been twelve for a long, long time now, mind you”, he retorted with a short laughing vibe to his words. “I was thinking midnight on Tuesday. Not that many people in the casino so I won’t have much work.” And by that, of course, he meant no one planned and important was coming over on Tuesday night.
“You may be classy, my friend, but everyone else? That’s debatable.” Molly grinned and brought her glass back to her lips, taking a sip. Of course, permanently damaging Alastair’s staff would risk his money inflow, Molly knew that much, but she didn’t often care when it came to getting her own money. This was Alastair, though. She could make a few exceptions. “Fair enough, I suppose. I’ll leave their slacking for you to deal with then, how’s that? You know how far you’re willing to go with the lot.”
“Midnight on Tuesday?” She thought quickly before nodding, deciding that she’d clear out her schedule if nothing else. “I’ll be there. Do you want me to bring the usual goods, or did you want to try something new this time around?”

“That, Molly dearest,” she began to explain amidst the electronic screech coming from the sink, pausing only to scrunch her nose at Charlie and motion at him to plug his ears, “… is the sound of hundreds of unsolicited dick pics and dozens of Rattatas meeting a cruel end.” Smiling contently, Bellatrix hooked a casual finger over the garbage disposal’s switch and flicked it off. The waste disposal unit let out one final howl of indignation before being forcibly sentenced to live out the rest of its days in bitter silence (or at least until Gideon thought to try shoving red vines down there again), winding down slowly and altogether too loudly. As if in need of further convincing that she’d gotten the job done right, Bellatrix peered over the sink and jabbed a fork down into the hole, clearing away stray bits of glass. “… Maybe a Weedle or two, give or take.”
Charlie stirred excitedly. “Were there really Pokemon down there?”
“In a sense.”
“Well, why can’t I play? Mum.”
Bellatrix’s lips curved into an amused smile as she wrapped an arm around her favorite nephew, crouching down to his level and stage whispering against his small shoulder, “I’ll talk to her about it, yeah? Maybe we’ll even catch you one of those dragon type pokemon, how does that sound?”
“Cool,” Charlie whispered back, eyes widening in awe. “Does Bill get one, too?”
“Of course not. I don’t like Bill.”
She gave his hair a playful ruffle, winking, and straightened to face Molly with a crooked grin. “What’s up? Need anyone’s skull smashed in?”
Molly wasn’t sure if her confusion or amusement was winning out at Bellatrix’s explanation, and she took a few steps closer to the protesting garbage disposal, peering over into the sink as she turned it off and the grinding finally came to a halt. “Whoever sent those dick pics your way should be glad it’s the phone being destroyed and not their dicks,” she said slowly, looking up and snorting. “For real, though. All of this over Rattatas and Weedles? You know, you’d find more than those two if you went out and walked around. That’s the go part of Pokemon Go.”
Of course, Charlie wanted in on the game--the boy had an almost unhealthy obsession with all things Pokemon--and Molly blew some hair out of her face, looking at her son. “Not until you’re older, I’ve told you this. Ten year olds don’t need smart phones.” Of course, her word was drowned out by Bellatrix’s offer, and Molly rolled her eyes, leaning back against the counter.
“Skulls smashed in? Nah, I could do that on my own if I wanted.” She grinned. “Charlie kept bugging me to bring him down to visit. He drew you a picture.”
As if on cue, Charlie perked up and took out a folded piece of paper from his pocket, shoving it at his aunt’s face excitedly. “It’s you! As a dragon! And here--” He pointed to two smaller dragons on either side. “That’s Uncle Gid, and that’s Uncle Bean.”
[ text; molly ]: i'm just trying to narrow the guilty list. someone drank a shit ton of awful drinks on my tag.
[ text; molly ]: true. but i'd come to the bar when you're working whether i get the cheap drinks or not, mols.

okay because i’m a nostalgic little shit, i’m writing up a little piece as well. bring on the tissues.
so wednesday would have been the one year anniversary of when i’d gotten accepted here as roxy (who at least a few of you remember, you oldies). honestly, i had never felt more welcomed, since roxy was--and still is--my child. from there the acceptance only grew, with molly, amelia, and finally benjy. god, i never expected molly to become my child with cannibal children and murderous family members, let alone having such a complex story. she’s one of my most developed characters, and i’m grateful every day that she’s become who she is today. i’ll never be able to thank you all enough for giving molly, amelia, and benjy a chance, because i adore them to death, and the reception each of them got when acceptance came around was overwhelming. i love you all.
that being said, there’s no way i’m deleting any of their blogs. i’m too nostalgic for that. they’re all sticking around indefinitely, and if you’d like to continue threads that we have--mafia or otherwise--please let me know. let me squeal. i’m far too invested in this au guys. basically, these three are becoming 1x1 sort of? so like expect some more shenanigans for a while. if you want to keep in touch, add my skype, snapchat, or go bug me on my writing blog (weaslxywrites). i never want to lose touch with you all; i love you too much <3
long story short: it’s been one hell of a year, and i love you all so much. i’ll miss you all.
Severus shrugged. “After you.” Gesturing into the garage. “You’re a busy woman. Children to look after, business to run. Things happen” He followed her in, pulling the door down behind him. Flicking a switch on the wall, the fluorescent lights on the ceiling flickered into use, casting the room in a sickly glow. “That’s the joy in setting up shop somewhere mostly deserted. I’d wager that like ninety percent of the garages aren’t in use.” It was definitely convenient. The less people milling around, the more secure business was. After all, they’d hardly be able to operate somewhere busy without rousing too much suspicion.
“So..” He began, sitting down on top of the mini fridge once Molly had grabbed a beer. “What’s it today? The usual or something else?” His fingers tapped idly against the sides of the fridge. “If you need extra it’s no problem. We finished up on some stuff yesterday.” It wasn’t their finest, but then again the stuff he sold to Molly never was. Still, he knew that it was better than most of the stuff that was being peddled on the streets. He had to make sure he kept a leg up on the competition somehow. One of the pros of having a chemistry expert as part of the team.
“How’s it been selling? Any issues at all?” He pulled his phone from his pocket, finally pausing the music.
“I am busy, yes.” And boy, did she feel it. Some of her employees had an... unfortunate accident, causing Molly to have to go back into the field herself lately. She’d forgotten how tiring it could be; finding people to replace them was next on her to-do list. Maybe she could drag in some addicts to do the work for her (then again, that was probably a bad idea). “It’s a nice space. Good that it’s private.”
She turned on her heels when Severus sat on top of the fridge, pulling out her phone and looking at her list. “The usual, yeah, but I’ll need a bit more PCP than usual. It seems like business is booming more than I expected this week. Not that that’s a bad thing.” She took a swig of her beer and tilted her head to the side. “Throw in a bit extra of the rest though and I’ll make it worth your time.” Though she knew it wasn’t Severus’ best--she’d be an idiot to not know that--he and his partner were better suppliers than anyone else that Molly could find milling around. She knew that he wouldn’t cheat her out of her stuff.
“Considering that increase in sales, I’d say everything’s been selling rather nicely. If there are any issues, I haven’t gotten a report of it yet.”
