The makeup evolution of Sauron in The Rings of Power Season 2 subtly mirrors his descent from angelic deceiver to unveiled Dark Lord. Through tone shifts and feature emphasis, the artists chart his internal unraveling long before the audience sees it.
Annatar’s Glamour: Warm Flesh and Trustworthy Glow
In his guise as Annatar, the “Lord of Gifts,” Sauron’s makeup leans into soft, fleshy worm tones — pale pinks, warm taupes, and subtle blushes that evoke vitality and trust. Key features include:
- Highlighted cheekbones and brow: Suggesting nobility and elven grace.
- Soft lip tones: A natural pink, humanizing and approachable.
- Occasional brush accents: Adding depth without harshness, reinforcing the illusion of benevolence.
This palette aligns with Tolkien’s description of Annatar as “fair and wise,” and visually supports his manipulative charm among the Elves.
The Shift Toward Shadow: Cold Undertones and Deathly Detail
As Sauron’s true motives begin to surface — especially in the scene where he subtly kills Mirdania — the makeup undergoes a chilling transformation:
- Loss of warmth: The worm tones vanish, replaced by ashen greys and cool shadows.
- Bluish lip tinge: A striking detail — the lips shift from pink to a faint corpse-like blue, hinting at the death within.
- Sharper contouring: His features become more angular, less inviting, almost predatory.
This shift is not just aesthetic — it’s narrative. The makeup team uses these cues to foreshadow the reveal, letting the audience feel the change before it’s spoken.
The first image (Annatar phase) shows soft lighting, warm skin, and a serene expression. The metallic clips and embroidery reinforce the illusion of divinity.
The second image (post-kill, pre-reveal) presents colder lighting, paler skin, and a more severe gaze. The leaf-like textures around the collar echo decay more than elegance.

Post-Reveal Sauron: Ashen Skin and Predatory Emptiness
Now that Sauron has dropped the Annatar façade, the makeup shifts dramatically to reflect his true nature:
- Pale, ashen complexion: His skin loses all warmth, becoming almost corpse-like. This stark pallor clashes unnervingly with his still-blond hair, creating a visual dissonance that feels wrong — as if the body no longer matches the soul.

- Sunken cheeks and sharp contouring: His face appears drawn, ill, and almost skeletal. The beauty of Annatar is gone; what remains is a mask of decay.
- Dead, shark-like eyes: This is the most haunting shift. His gaze no longer reflects thought or feeling — just cold, predatory calculation. There’s no recognition, no empathy, no flicker of soul. Just the abyss.
The first images show a character with warm undertones, soft features, and expressive eyes — the illusion of life and trust.
The later images reveal a figure who looks drained of humanity, with cold lighting, ashen skin, and emotionless eyes that seem to pierce but never connect.
