แฏโ LoverBoy = the boy who loves me.. Tooth rotting fluff, reader is fem (she/her)!!
Valen is the type of man to bring a bouquet of flowers from wherever his last mission was headed.
He tends to choose a lot of the flowers from the dark forest and because he never learns his lesson. He always gets caught at the act and ends up having to endure an earful from Hogan.
But it's all worth it in the end when he sees that happy smile on your face the moment he gifts you the flowers.
He can have the worst day ever, but the second he sees you happy. It can INSTANTLY make him feel like a whole new man.
You just have this strong effect on him.
Just imagine him on the sofa, all worn out and mumbling to himself about how his life is the worst, but once you step in the room with a smile on your face and talking about how much you miss him.
Suddenly he's on his feet, lifting you off the ground by your waist and swinging you around as you laughed.
There was a time he started doing 20 push ups because you made him all flustered.
Now, there's no loving you if he does not spoil you.
Of course I'm not talking about him literally drizzling you in diamonds (but if you asked, he'll literally make it happen). He'd be the type to just show up with your favourite snacks or a stuff animal everytime he visits you.
He just adores your reaction.
Like "Awww you got me the thing I saw the other day!" Or "How did you know I was craving for this!!"
But the best part for him is you showering him with kisses while he has this cocky look on his face.
Because when it comes to being the best boyfriend, nobody can compete with him.
He just KNOWS he's that good at it.
That's because he understands you better than yourself sometimes.
There was a time where you both were invited to this celebration party, you couldn't explain why but you just felt extremely anxious and irritated around a bunch of strangers.
Valen could tell almost instantly, how your smile was forced and your laugh joyless. He gave the excuse that he had a weak stomach and needed to leave.
After that, he took you to a beautiful lakeside near Holistone. You could never forget the feeling of belonging when your body was enveloped by his.
He had your head rested on his chest and you could feel the vibrations from his humming. It was all too relaxing that he noticed your eyes fluttering slowly.
"Mm... fall asleep my dove, I can carry you home after" He whispers, his voice soft like feathers.
He is a loser for when you dress up.
It doesn't matter if you're wearing a tight dress, baggy clothes, or whatever. It's the effort to make yourself look so mesmerising that has him in a trance.
So when you guys go out in public, his hands are literally glued to you. And he loves it especially when he has his arm wrapped around your waist.
Not only does he love to hold you there but he'll actually tickle you by the sides if you guys happen to be disagreeing about something silly.
"Valen stop!!"
"Not if you admit to me that tomato is a vegetable!!"
Now given he's a Knight, his duty isn't just to protect and serve but to also ensure your safety.
There was this one time where you're both asleep, but suddenly he heard a noise outside. I kid you not, his reflexes kicked in and his hand is already on his sword before you could even have the time to open your eyes.
"Valen...?" You called his name, a bit startled by the sound.
"Shh... it's okay baby..." He presses a kiss to your temple.
You watch as he got out of bed and look out the window, just to find the sound being because of a flower pot falling from the neighbours window. He sighs, clearly relieved.
"It's nobody... ahhh" He stretches his back with a loud yawn. He was shirtless and in nothing but his pants so you swore if he stretches any harder you swore he was gonna pop a muscle in his bicep.
He then made his way back to bed and placed his sword back to its rightful place... then pretty much collapsing into your arms like a baby.
He'll make sure you're always well fed, giving you the first bite of his food and having you be hydrated all the time.
That's because you once fell sick when he was away on a mission, the second he came back he was mad at you for not taking care of yourself, but he couldn't stay mad because you were giving him those sad puppy eyes that ended up making him give in so easily.
You know that cape of his?
Since he loves to sneak off duty to talk to you, he'll always hide you under his cape whenever a troop patrolling passes by.
Just imagine him greeting them with a sly salute, but the moment they're out of sight, he's turning around and uncovering you from underneath his cape.
"That was a close one wasn't it dove?" He says with a soft smile.
Like I said, he's a jokester.
He'd sometimes do it at the most random time to catch you off guard.
"Man I'm so hungry I could eat my girlfriend right now" He said, acting all uninterested even though he was peeking at the corner of his eye to find your reaction.
That is you raising an eyebrow at him.
Has once made a joke meant for you but he ended up being the one who laughed the hardest, you simply just stare at him with an amused look.
I'm talking slapping the knee level of laughing.
And the joke was literally "Would you like to have a cup of coffee with me? Because I like you a latte baby!"
Maybe he'll get better at it.
You know how his hair can be in his face sometimes? That's why he let's you tie it up for him.
You find it cute because he'd just sit there like a dog waiting for his owner to pamper him. Plus, he looks adorable with his hair tied up.
Lovesloveslovesloves it when you draw hearts on his hands or other places of his body before he leaves on a long mission.
Will actually go on days with it on his body and come back with the drawings in good condition.
Just imagine he's taking off his armor to treat a wound but his whole chest is just drawings of hearts, and someplace on his left side were your initials. Low-key does not care when the others tease him for it.
Because in the end of the day, he's the one in a happy relationship and he'd do nothing to change that.
(where your best friend pretends to be your boyfriend for the holidays so you can avoid more nagging from your mother. except your whole family thought you were already dating)
pairing: mingyu x f!reader
genre: fake dating (kind of), friends to lovers, holiday!au | fluff, smut, romance
rating: explicit, minors do not interact
word count: 18.1k
warnings: eating, drinking, mentions of christmas and holiday celebrations, reference to mingyu being afraid of heights, some minor family dynamic issues, so much kissing, fingering, big dick!mingyu, sex (just plain old missionary), i think that's it
author's note: thank you to the amazing @camandemstudios studios for hosting the winter with you collab! it's been so fun to be part of (even if i forgot for a second that i had to include sunrise sledding, but we're ignoring that). i'm sorry this is a little late as a holiday fic but sometimes life happens and inspiration just doesn't want to strike. i'm not even going to say it's longer than i intended because that's just my brand atp. this is largely unedited.
author's note 2: i think there's going to be an epilogue but idk when that will be possible
โYouโre bringing your boyfriend back with you, arenโt you?โ your mom asks, which makes you look sharply toward the phone. Itโs on speaker because youโre in the middle of folding laundry. Your best friend also looks over towards your phone with a grimace, which makes you wish it wasnโt on speaker.
The thing isโฆyou havenโt told your mom that your ex and you broke up about two months ago. Didnโt want to deal with all the sighing and interrogation while youโre rushing to finish end of the year deadlines at work. Somehow, you know itโll be your fault. Never mind the fact that he cheated on you in your own apartment. But, thatโs another story. Your mother will say something about how you shouldnโt be so picky and everyone makes mistakes. Say that sometimes itโs not your most attractive trait that youโre dedicated to your job. Say that youโre not getting any younger and remind you how many of your friends from school are already married or even having kids of their own. Thatโs one reminder you donโt really need. You see it every time you aimlessly scroll through your feed. Or when you open the mail and see another wedding invitation.ย
You sigh. โWell, actuallyโฆโย
โOh, donโt tell me,โ your mother says with her own sigh. โYou broke it off with this one, too?โย
โIโm not going to get into it with you,โ you say, gentle but firm.ย
โI donโt understand what could have made you break it off. You said he was like your best friend,โ she reminds you.ย
This earns an eye roll from one of your actual best friends, Mingyu. He takes over folding your clothes for you as something to do and as a way to speed up the whole process.ย
โWell, heโs not and I donโt see any reality where I will forgive him for what he did to me. So, letโs move on,โ you say.ย
โMaybe thatโs okay. You know, one of my friends has a son whoโs single and I could justโฆโ she starts.
โNo, absolutely not,โ you say. This causes Mingyu to stifle his laughter with a hand.
โI donโt understand what the harm in meeting him is. He seems very nice and youโre not exactly getting any younger,โ she says.ย
There it is. The conversation always somehow ends up at the same point. Youโre not getting any younger. All your parentsโ friends have been planning weddings and getting grandchildren. They all seem to understand the importance of building a family. Why do you have to be so focused on whatโs wrong with every person you date? Why are you too wrapped up in work? Your parents constantly remind you how you seem too wrapped up in the city life to realize what youโre missing.
โI just donโt thinkโฆโ you start but then trail off when Mingyu starts waving at you to get your attention. Heโs pointing at himself and mouthing something you canโt understand.
โI know you donโt think, but justโฆโ your mom starts and you mute yourself so you can figure out what your best friend wants.
โWhat, Mingyu?โ you ask, sharper than you intend.
โTake me back with you for the holidays,โ he says.ย
โWhat?โ you ask.
โTake meโฆโ he starts.
โNo, I heard you. What are you on about?โ you ask.ย
โYou can just feed your mom some line. Tell her you and I just started dating. It doesnโt matter. Anything to just get her off your case,โ he says.
โIโm notโฆwhat is wrong with you? Iโm not going to just fake date you like some weird holiday movie,โ you argue.
โOkay, first of all, rude. Those movies arenโt weird, theyโre great. And second of all, what do you have to lose?ย Your mom loves me and sheโll be thrilled to see me. I already know everyone thatโll be at the parties and dinners. My parents are out of the country visiting my sister and her new boyfriend for the holidays, so I was only going to my cousinโs as kind of a pity invite. It canโt possibly fail,โ he says.
โThere are a lot of ways it could fail, actually,โ you point out.
โWow, are you going to leave me stranded for the holidays? Iโm already rethinking this relationship,โ Mingyu says through a pout. โMy own partner doesnโt even want to spend the holidays with me. Are you embarrassed to bring me around your family?โ
โSo what do you say?โ comes your momโs voice. You had been blocking it out while talking to Mingyu, yet it still catches your attention.
You quickly unmute yourself and look away from Mingyu. โIโฆactually canโt, Mom. Iโm sort of seeing someone different, but itโs new so I wasnโt going to mentionโฆโย
โOh, you already found someone new, thatโs wonderful!โ she exclaims.ย
You donโt have to look at Mingyu to know that heโs wearing a grin thatโs entirely too satisfied. Even if heโs mostly kidding about being abandoned for Christmas, you know that itโs been bugging him that his parents decided to go abroad. You also know that he wouldnโt ever dream of inviting himself to tag long even if thatโs what he wanted to do. He actually likes your family, sometimes more than you do.ย
โIโll have to ask him if heโs willing to come with me, butโฆโ you try to say before your mother cuts you off again.
โTell him it simply wouldnโt be the holidays without him. I canโt wait to meet him. Oh, Iโm going to tell your father. We may manage to get you married after all,โ she says in seemingly one breath.
โI still havenโtโฆโ you try again without any luck.
โI canโt wait to see you both! Love you!โ she says.ย
โLove y-...โ you say, but sheโs already ended the call.ย
โI guess I have holiday plans after all,โ Mingyu says and you fight the urge to throw a pillow at him.
โThis is a terrible idea. I canโt pretend weโre dating,โ you say and crinkle your nose.
โOh, wow, have I offended your high standards?โ he asks. โShould I remind you of your last two relationships?โ
You do throw the pillow at him this time.ย
Despite all the questions from your parents about just who is coming home with you for the holidays, you insist that it needs to be a surprise. You definitely think that your parents will be surprised when they see Mingyu on their doorstep. Even though you only met Mingyu in college, the two of you have been nearly inseparable since then. Heโs come with you to countless family events to keep you company, especially between other relationships. Your parents buy him Christmas presents every year and insist on video chatting with both of you on his birthdays. Your younger cousins ask when heโs going to be coming around again because they look up to him, both literally and figuratively. Itโs kind of annoying sometimes because you wonder if they like him more than their own family member. But, you reason it away with them liking him for the same reasons that you do. Heโs just so easy to be around, though they get more of his polite company attitude than you do. Around you, heโs much more relaxed and somehow more prone to pouting to get his way.ย
More unfortunately, the pout always seems to work on you. You pretend to be annoyed with it (well, itโs not always pretending, actually), but you give in every time. Which is fine when itโs just the two of you. Itโs less fine when other friends are around because they all have smug looks. Convinced that you and him are end game and neither of you realizes yet. The worst, though, is when he slips into the pout mode around your family and you have to deal with the looks from your family members. Itโs all worth it to have someone to act as a buffer, even if youโll never tell him as much.ย
Before you get to that point of seeing your parents, you figure that you should stop by to see your childhood best friend first. Of course, he already knows the whole story with Mingyu and doesnโt seem entirely surprised. After all, heโs also known your mom nearly his whole life. Somehow you went from kids forced together when the parents hung out to adults that actually still genuinely love each other, which means he knows Mingyu well too. In his role as best friend, your current situation will not spare you from his teasing. Thatโs a role heโs happily embraced all your lives.ย
The smirk on his face is present as soon as he sees you and Mingyu walk into the coffee shop. Mingyu hasnโt even spotted him while he unwinds his scarf and heads to the counter to order drinks. You say youโre going over to sit with your friend and only then does Mingyu notice youโre not the first ones here.ย
โHey Kwan, you good on your drink?โ he calls.
โYeah, thanks,โ he calls back before his eyes turn on you like heโs got a secret.ย
You make your way over to his table and try not to react to the look heโs giving you. Typical Seungkwan looking like heโs about to burst with the latest gossip. Even when he knows exactly why you have Mingyu with you and even said, over text, he gets why you agreed. Ugh. You know better than to think heโll let you live for even a second. Sometimes you think you need better friends.
โHas he gotten taller?โ Seungkwan asks, casting his eyes over at your other friend.ย
โNo, but for real,โ you say with a laugh. โI swear, I see him constantly and I still feel like heโs getting taller.โ
โConstantly, huh?โ Seungkwan asks, raising an eyebrow.
โWeโre best friends,โ you say with a sigh.
โAnd what am I?โ he asks.ย
โAlso my best friend. Thereโs no rule on having only one,โ you repeat for what feels like the hundredth time.ย
โAre you nervous to head back to your parentsโ house?โ he asks, entirely switching approaches.ย
Itโs not your first rodeo, though. โWhy should I be? They like Mingyu, at least, so there wonโt be any of the awkwardness beyond explaining that weโre dating now.โย
โWhich probably isnโt going to come as a surprise to them,โ Seungkwan says.ย
โI mean, why wouldnโt it be a surprise?โ you ask before you clock the look on his face. โOh, donโt tell me this is more of that bullshit about how often I bring him around. You know my family is insufferable if I have to deal with them alone.โย
โNo, I just know for a fact that theyโve wondered if you were dating him before,โ Seungkwan says as Mingyu finally joins you with two coffees in hand.
โThat would mean she would need to have good enough taste to date someone as great as me,โ he says when he sets your coffee in front of you.
โIโm so torn,โ Seungkwan admits. โI could insult her taste in relationships, which, love you babe, but really? Or I could insult you as not really being any better than anyone sheโs dated.โ
โThat one gets us both, though?โ you point out, only a little offended.
โOption two it is,โ Seungkwan agrees.ย
โOkay, enough of that. Fill me in on everything before I have to walk into the lionโs den,โ you say.ย
Itโs always the same when you catch up with Seungkwan. Heโs thriving even though he chose not to leave the area where you grew up. Itโs not that big of an area, but heโs found opportunities. You just found those opportunities a little further away. Just far enough away that your mother canโt easily pop by unannounced. That lead time before she shows up is usually enough that you can mentally prepare.ย
Seungkwan, for his part, really does brighten up the entire space, when heโs not being a demon. Heโs got that kind of shine that canโt even be dulled by staying in the same general area as his family. Heโs also better at setting boundaries, which he gently reminds you again. He doesnโt need the space and preparation time of his family showing up at his place unannounced because they all know thatโs not allowed. Itโs not that youโre a pushover, itโs just that it feels different. Even your parents seem to respect Seungkwan more than you at times. You try not to let the cynicism of being a woman seep into those feelings. But, itโs hard. Harder still when Seungkwan gives you the sympathetic look like he wants to agree and knows it wonโt really help anything. Heโs always been that special brand of ally. The one that actually does want to help and understands the inherent privilege.
Unfortunately, Seungkwan and his family wonโt be coming to the events that your parents have planned for the next week, though theyโre always invited. They wanted to do something more focused on their family instead. It probably seems like something over the top to anyone on the outside. To you, it just seems normal. This is how your parents always handle the holidays and most events seem to take place at their house.ย
All too soon, Seungkwan says that he needs to get back to something and reminds you that you canโt put off going home any longer. Youโre already getting dangerously close to what your mother considers late. Itโs probably not the best idea to test her patience before the week even starts.ย
Mingyu takes care of getting you over to your parents house. Maybe fake dating him for a week wonโt be so bad when he takes care of driving without asking and doesnโt even need an address. Since he also already knows your entire family, he doesnโt need help with getting gifts to bring with him. That includes both something to give them when you get there as well as actual Christmas gifts. You remember telling him that wasnโt necessary and remember the look of horror on his face when he asked what kind of fake boyfriend he would be if he forgot. Despite the weirdness of the situation, you also find yourself far more at peace than the last time you brought an actual partner home like this. Mingyu has seen you through a lot of ups and downs. Knows when to be serious and when to crack a little joke to break the tension, even if itโs something only for your ears.ย
That all disappears as soon as your mother greets you at the door with a look of genuine surprise on her face.ย
โSurprise,โ you say. It seems a little redundant because she seems shocked. โYou, uh, you remember Mingyu, right?โย
โOf course, of course, come in out of the cold,โ she says, recovering quickly as she steps out of the way. โLet me get your coats.โ
โI know this is probably a bit of a surprise,โ you start.
โIt definitely is,โ she agrees as she takes Mingyuโs and your coats. โYour father is just in the family room.โ
โI figured it would be a good surprise,โ you offer as you start to follow her into the house.ย
โNo, of course it is. We adore Mingyu, you know that,โ she says with a soft smile for Mingyu. Sheโs always loved him. โWe just, well, we thought you and him had broken upโฆโ
โBrokenโฆwhat?โ you ask, your own shock now matching your motherโs as you come to a complete halt.ย
Mingyu seems to just stay quiet through this entire exchange. Youโre wondering why until you look over at him to see that heโs barely containing his laughter. Of course he would find this whole thing funny. Maybe he believes Seungkwan that your parents have wondered if you were dating him. Or maybe heโs just quicker on the uptake. Whatever it, it would be annoying if your brain wasnโt working overtime to try and catch up.
โYes, you said youโd broken up with a boyfriend. Your father and I realized we hadnโt actually met the last person you dated and we just assumed, since you only mention Mingyu. Well, you said he was like your best friend and we knew it wasnโt Seungkwan. Mingyu only made sense,,โ your mother says with a shrug.ย
โMingyu! What are you doing here?โ your father asks, rising from his seat to shake your best friendโs hand.ย
โDating our daughter, apparently,โ your mother says with a skeptical look.ย
โOh, good! Iโm glad you kids worked it out,โ he says.ย
โDidโฆeveryone just think I was datingโฆ?โ you start to ask, looking confusedly between your parents. โMom, Dad, I was not dating Mingyu. We were onlyโฆโ
โFriends?โ your mother supplies through her heavy tone of disbelief.ย
โYes,โ you say, eyes wide and desperate looking to Mingyu for support.
โWe really were just friends,โ Mingyu says. โI mean, I guess not just friends. But, seeing her go through another heartbreak just made me realize that I didnโt want to see her go through something like that again. I guess it just made me realize how much I do care about her. So, I finally said something.โย
Thereโs a lot that you can count on Mingyu for. Driving, having an endless supply of oversized hoodies to steal, a stocked kitchen, the best meals of your life, 2 am chats, support through break ups, hating the same people, being scared of his own shadow, a perpetual golden retriever energy, endless loyalty, and the list goes on. Something you never expect to count on Mingyu for, though? The lie that spills so easily from his lips to try and get your parents off your case. Sure, he knows just how much you struggle with your relationship with them. This is different, though. The lie sounds so sincere and his face looks so soft when he glances over at you.ย
โYou know, itโs okay if you just got back together,โ your mother says, looking between the two of you.ย
โOh my god, thatโs not what happened!โ you say, throwing your hands up.ย
โOf course, dear, of course,โ your father says.ย
โI should go take our suitcases upstairs. Am I just in the normal guest room?โ he asks.ย
Itโs both a deflection from the conversation and a valid question all rolled into one. Whatever the case, it does work for long enough to have your mother refocus her attention on Mingyu to answer. That gives you at least a second to catch your breath. Bringing Mingyu was supposed to give you a break from your parents. And it will, you think, but itโs also bringing up a lot that you hadnโt planned on. You wonder what Seungkwan will say when you tell him about the reception. Probably that he told you so.
โOh, no dear. We planned to have you stay in our daughterโs old room with her,โ your mother says.
Great. Now youโre in an entirely new spiral because, what? She has you and Mingyu staying in the same room where there is only one bed? You canโt remember the last time she was this relaxed with a partner you brought home, which brings up even more questions. Has this really been the plan? Or is only the plan now because of how much they like him? Is this just another way for them to try and nudge you into marriage?
โBut, momโฆโ you start to protest.
โWeโve got a full house with family, dear,โ she says as an explanation.ย
โI know where it is, Iโll just take the stuff up,โ Mingyu offers.
โI can help,โ you say as a way to get out of this whole thing and to talk to your friend.
โPretty sure Iโm strong enough to get some luggage upstairs,โ he jokes and you roll your eyes.
โWhy donโt you go up with him anyway? Then you can freshen up before dinner,โ your mother says with a poorly disguised look at your slightly wrinkled clothing.ย
Mingyu insists on carrying the bigger suitcases upstairs on his own, but you grab the smaller bags you had in the car with you. Well, except for his backpack that he also stubbornly carries. You donโt need a personal demonstration, you already know that heโs strong. You also donโt need to hear your mother talking about how nice it is to have such a polite young man around like he hasnโt been around a million times before. Once youโre inside the room and behind a closed door, you round on your friend.
โWhat the hell was that?โ you ask.
โYour mom actually letting you and a boyfriend stay in the same room? I donโt know. Itโs crazy, right?โ he asks.
โNot that, what was with you?โ you ask.ย
โWhat do you mean?โ he returns, looking up from his suitcase where he had been getting ready to unpack.ย
โThat whole answer you gave my mom,โ you say and he looks almost pitying.
โI have to make it believable, donโt I?โ he asks like itโs the simplest thing in the world. โOtherwise, she wonโt buy it and sheโs going to try to set you up.โ
โI guess that makes sense,โ you concede.ย
โKind of wild that they thought weโd been dating, though,โ he adds on.
โYeah, what was that?โ you ask with more force than you mean.ย
He only shrugs. โI donโt know, theyโre your parents.โย
โSeungkwan said the same thing,โ you remind him.ย
โAbout people thinking weโre dating?โ he asks, eyes back on his suitcase.
โYeah,โ you say.
He only chuckles before he looks up. โCome on, thatโs not the first time either. How many of our friends have thought the same thing?โ
โTheyโre just fucking with us,โ you disagree.
โAnd my ex?โ he asks with a raised eyebrow.ย
โOkay, well in my defense, she was insane. The whole idea that people of the opposite sex canโt be friends is an insane take,โ you say.
โYeah, Iโm not exactly upset to be rid of her,โ he agrees.
โCome on. We better hurry up and get back downstairs,โ you say.
The rest of the day is somehow just as weird, but also comforting. As the rest of the family starts arriving, either to stay or just for dinner, you find out that most of your family thinks youโve been dating Mingyu. Or that it was him that you broke up with and are now back together with. Itโs hard to tell if itโs something coming from your parents or just a general vibe that the two of you give off. You can at least acknowledge that you didnโt talk about your last relationship much with your family. Hindsight is always clearer, but you still think you knew something was off in that relationship the whole time. Knew that he wasnโt destined to go the distance. Maybe thatโs why the break up didnโt hurt that bad. Honestly, the worst part was thinking of facing your family alone for Christmas.
Mingyu saves you from that as heโs saved you countless times before.ย
That brings you to the more comforting part of the evening. You canโt tell if any of your family members actually buy that this is a new relationship. At least, none of them seem to think itโs fake. You can probably put up with it if they just think youโre lying about when you actually got together. That makes it all feel much easier. Then, thereโs the fact that your entire family loves Mingyu. Itโs the first time you can remember joining the dinner to kick off the family Christmas festivities in years. Your family takes the holidays very seriously and itโs Mingyuโs first time experiencing it like this. Yet, he slots right in with everything.ย
It also feels like heโs thought through this whole fake relationship in ways you didnโt. Sure, you talked about some of the ins and outs since this isnโt just a quick overnight trip. But, mostly, you just decide itโs easiest to keep it as close to the truth as possible. The friendship is so deep that thereโs genuine love there. You donโt have to fake that. What you did not consider is physical affection. Youโre not the kind of person that drapes yourself all over a partner, never have been. Thereโs a moment where you worry, as you watch your cousin and her fiancรฉ, that you and Mingyu could be found out for not showing enough affection.ย
A few minutes later, youโre wishing he would be less affectionate. And youโre not even sure why you worried. The first thing you really learned about Mingyu was that he was incredibly physically affectionate. Tight hugs, random hand holding, an arm around your shoulder, a hand on your arm or leg. Itโs all just par for the course with him. Itโs gotten even more obvious now that heโs pretending to date you. It seems so innocuous, too. Heโs got his hand on your thigh, giving the occasional squeeze, while heโs talking to someone else. He randomly plants a kiss on your temple. He leans over to whisper something to you on the pretense of being close and usually itโs nothing. You donโt even realize that it has most of your family giving each other knowing looks. Like theyโre still not convinced you hadnโt been dating before.ย
By the time itโs late enough to go upstairs, youโre more than ready to have time away from your family. Every time you think that youโre social, your family is there to humble you. Or maybe itโs just that being around them is too draining. In any case, you and Mingyu head upstairs together. Thankfully, your parents house is big enough that it feels like thereโs a little bit of privacy in your old bedroom.ย
โSo, howโs this going to work?โ Mingyu asks, glancing at the bed and then into the attached bathroom.ย
Okay, so maybe, even with how big the house is, you havenโt fully considered everything. Youโre not really sure what to do. It shouldnโt be weird. You and Mingyu have shared a bed before. This just somehow feels intimate when your entire family thinks youโre sharing because youโre in a relationship and donโt know this is all pretend so you can have a little bit of peace for the holidays. Your gift to yourself. Shaking it all off, you turn to Mingyu.
โI mean, weโve shared before. Itโll be fine,โ you say.ย
โSo are we not gonna talk about the last time we shared?โ he asks with an eyebrow raised.
Racking your brain, you canโt really think of anything that would make him say that. Had something awkward happened? Did one of you do something that you should really remember? Just as youโre about to go into a full blown spiral, you feel Mingyu appear before you. He reaches out to smooth out the line between your eyebrows.
โDonโt hurt yourself there,โ he says with a laugh. โYou whined about me taking up too much space.โย
โOh my god,โ you say and swat at him. โIt was a tiny bed and you took up the entire thing! You canโt do this to me when Iโm already wound tight over my family.โย
โSorry,โ he says and throws up his hands. The sparkle in his eyes says that heโs anything but.ย
โIโm going to change and then start my skincare routine,โ you say as you move to grab something to wear to bed.ย
Without even asking if youโre dressed, Mingyu comes into the bathroom to start doing his own skincare routine while youโre in there. Heโs already changed into a t-shirt and shorts, which you know is more than he normally wears to bed. Itโs somehow peaceful to go through your routines in silence like this. You consider that it might be in part because it forces him to be quiet. Not that you usually mind his chatter, itโs just that your brain is already tired from one night dealing with your family. You canโt imagine how the rest of the days are going to go and are thankful for the downtime when youโll be able to get out of the house to do things.ย
Once youโre back in the bedroom, you both finish off all the little things you need to do. You plug in your phone after checking for any important notifications, grab the TV remote to fling it over to Mingyu, and slide under the covers. Usually you just kind of scroll before going to sleep or sometimes youโll read. But, you think it might be weird to do those things when youโre sharing a bed with someone else.
โDo I need to make a pillow wall or something?โ he asks as heโs flipping through to find something to watch.
Your head whips to the side to look at him. Even though itโs only his profile, you can see that heโs smirking. Purposefully not looking at you because he knows itโll break the little composure he has. To deal with that, you whack him with a pillow.ย
โJust donโt drape your entire body over me,โ you say.
โWhy?โ he asks and does turn to look at you now, wiggling his eyebrows. โAfraid itโll be too close?โ
โNo, you fucking goober, youโre just heavy,โ you say through a genuine laugh.
โHow is this relationship ever going to work if weโre calling each other names?โ he says, pretending to be heartbroken.ย
โSame way it has for like 8 years,โ you joke back with a soft smile.ย
โAre you saying you love me?โ he asks, hand on his heart. This is one of your favorite things about your friendship with Mingyu because heโs so dramatic that it takes your mind off everything else.
โI donโt know, Iโm rethinking it,โ you say and turn back to the TV.ย
โI love you too, you know,โ he says, voice soft enough to make you turn back to him.
โI know, Gyu. I donโt think anyone else would put themselves through this for me, so thank you,โ you say honestly.ย
He just shrugs and goes back to a lighter place. โWell, I didnโt have good holiday plans and who can say no to this level of entertainment?โย
The next day actually gives you time to catch up with some of your family members more personally instead of everything being such big conversations. Thatโs especially true for your cousin, Mimi, whoโs only two years younger than you and has always been your favorite of your cousins. Even if you go months without seeing each other, it always feels like no time passes. Thereโs just a level of closeness and understanding between the two of you. You can complain about your mothers since theyโre sisters and honestly the same person, just in a different font. Itโs easy to be on the same page about things as well.ย
Youโre actually a little surprised to see that sheโs here alone, even though you know she recently got out of a bad relationship. Somehow, it seems her mom is more understanding than your own. She was also much more honest about how the relationship fell apart after 3 years and her mom is sympathetic about it. When she says it like that, you understand. Your last few relationships have all been measured in months rather than years.ย
โYouโre not, like, actually dating Mingyu though, are you?โ she asks quietly when itโs just the two of you.
โMimi,โ you hiss and look around.
โWeโre alone,โ she assures you with a wave of her hand. โSo, spill.โ
โNo,โ you say hesitantly. โWhy?โ
โIโm just curious,โ she says unconvincingly.ย
โHe was with me when my mom was bugging me about the holidays and bringing someone with me. Then she was going to set me up, so he just offeredโฆโ you start.
โHe was the one who suggested it?โ she asks, far more curious than she should be.ย
โYeah,โ you say simply. โAgain, why?โ
She shrugs. โI donโt know. Iโve just always thought he was cute and I was wondering if heโs actually single.โย
โYou cannot hit on Mingyu,โ you whisper through gritted teeth. She gives you a look you canโt place before brushing it off.
โOh, Iโm not saying I would. Itโs just good to know I could,โ she says.
โYou canโt,โ you remind her. โEveryone thinks weโre dating.โย
โDonโt worry, I wouldnโt do it anywhere anyone else could see,โ she teases.ย
Of course, another of our cousins picks that moment to join you, so you canโt further chastise Mimi. It irritates you all the same though. How does she think itโs just fine to do something like that when youโre supposed to be in a fake relationship? Could she not just wait to hit on him until the rest of your family wasnโt watching with too much attention?ย
Normally, Mimi is a respite from the rest of your family. Sheโs one of the few people that youโre always completely honest with. Now, sheโs taken that away. You try to go about the rest of the day with her knowing that the relationship is fake and she seems like sheโs trying her best to get under your skin. Every part of you wants to stop her from chatting so much to Mingyu and you canโt. It would seem weird when everyone knows that you and your cousin are close. Weirder still when she always knows Mingyu relatively well from every other time heโs been to some family event.ย
When you excuse yourself up to your bedroom for a second away from your parents and their incessant hint dropping, Mingyu slips into the room just after you. Which is odd, considering you had not even seen him also slip away. The second odd thing comes when you look at his face. He looks more serious than usual, more tired. It doesnโt fully make sense because heโs incredibly social. Loves to be around people in the way all true extroverts do. Something must be wrong.
โCan I talk to you?โ he asks after closing the door.
โYou donโt ever have to ask,โ you say with clear apprehension.ย
โDid you tell Mimi we werenโt actually dating?โ he asks, still looking at you in a way you canโt place.
You exhale, thinking itโll be nothing. โOh, that, yeah. Iโm sorry I didnโt mention it to you, I justโฆโ
โDid you also tell her that Iโm very single and she should go ahead and shoot her shot?โ he asks and you stop short hearing that.
โI - what?โ you ask.
โShe just kind of cornered me and was laying it on super thick, but she said it was fine because she knows weโre not really dating and that youโd encouraged her toโฆโ he starts and you immediately cut him off.
โWhat the actual fuck, Mimi?โ you say in frustration.ย
โI mean, if you want me toโฆโ he tries to start again, looking a little like a lost or kicked puppy. It makes you immediately close the space between you and him.ย
โGyu, no. I did tell her that we werenโt actually dating, but I absolutely did not tell her it was okay to do any of that, let alone encourage it,โ you say.ย
โSo you donโt want me to flirt back?โ he asks. Heโs still looking Too Serious when he says it and youโre not really sure how to feel.
โSince weโre supposed to be dating, Iโd prefer you didnโt. But, if you think sheโs pretty itโs not like I can stop you,โ you say noncommittally.ย
โOf course I think sheโs pretty. You and your whole family are pretty. Itโs like something in a TV show or some shit,โ he says and this is a Mingyu you recognize because heโs rolling his eyes.ย
โOh yeah, says the guy who looks like that,โ you say and vaguely gesture at him.
โIโฆdid you just compliment me?โ he asks, totally off track from wherever he was going.
โThat depends, did you compliment me first?โ you deflect.ย
โYouโre such a shithead,โ he grumbles and you tsk at him.
โNow, now sweetheart, should we really be name calling?โ you tease.
He fixes you with his attempt at an unimpressed stare, but heโs nowhere near as good at it as you are. Like every other time, he relents first. โIโve probably told you how beautiful you are hundreds of times in our friendship.โย
โWhich Iโve always returned,โ you lie.
โBe so for real. I have to pull most compliments out of you,โ he says through a snort. When you open your mouth to protest, he cuts you off. โMost compliments that are not about my cooking, I should say.โ
โPeople fall all over you,โ you say with a good natured eye roll of your own. โDo you really need to hear me also say you could easily be a model?โ
โDoesnโt hurt,โ he mumbles through a pout.
โOh, beautiful Mingyu,โ you start, taking on the silliest voice you can muster. โYouโre so pretty that I could cry. Your face breaks hearts every day, your smile lights up the room, your hairโฆโ
โOkay, okay, enough,โ he says even though he looks pleased.
โI cannot believe Mimi, though,โ you say.
โIโm glad youโre not trying to push us together,โ he admits.
โWhy? Not interested?โ you tease.
He answers seriously, though. โNo. Sheโs pretty, sure, but no, Iโm definitely not interested, even if I wasnโt pretending to date you.โย
That honest answer strikes something in you. Not that honesty is unusual between the two of you. It just feels like thereโs also an element of vulnerability in the response as well. Like heโs saying something that you just canโt quite decipher. You just brush aside for now, though, since thereโs nothing else you really can do.ย
Mingyu, as it turns out, has one winter time tradition that heโs always wanted to try and never had the chance to do: sledding. Heโs never lived in any place where itโs snowy enough or thereโs enough free space. But, up here in the relative mountains where your parents live, sledding is a way of life. Itโs something youโve done countless times growing up with friends or family. Part of you is even a little thankful that he wants to do it, too. Itโs been years since youโve gone sledding and getting to see his face when you go for the first time feels special. Feels like something thatโs just for you.ย
Which is why youโre up before the sun.ย
Last night, when you talked about sledding and getting an early start, Mingyu was on board. Now that itโs time to actually get up, you can see it written all over his face that heโs regretting every decision thatโs ever led him to this moment. Like the true best friend that he is, though, heโs keeping the actual grumbling to a minimum. Youโre not sure why youโre not also grumbling. Youโre not a morning person. But, youโve never gone sledding at sunrise either and something about it just seems like itโll be magical. Like it really will make it an entirely new experience for you and him to share.ย
The house is quiet as you grab the bag of snow pants and winter jackets that you packed the night before from the closet in the entryway. Everything feels so peaceful in the house and just as still when you leave. Like even the soft sound of the door is too much while the whole world sleeps. You can hear the slight crunch under your feet as you trudge over to Mingyuโs car and take care not to be too loud getting in. Thank him again for driving when you know itโs way earlier than he wants to be awake. All he does is smile like thereโs nowhere else in the world he would rather be.ย
The drive to the hill where youโre going to sled is quick and also tranquil. Even the music is soft like Mingyu is afraid of disrupting the peace. Or maybe youโre both just appreciating something different than the normal bustle of life in a city. Itโs never this kind of quiet there and thereโs something kind of beautiful about it. Even the parking lot is empty when you get to the small hill that you used to sled down as a kid. Youโve never seen it empty before. Then again, youโve never been before the sun rose, either. Mingyu takes care to unload the sleds before you both bundle up. Itโs not terribly cold, but you make him put on the waterproof gear anyway.ย
He stops at the bottom of the hill and looks towards the top. โWeโre going all the way up there?โย
You can hear a little bit of nerves in his voice. Mingyu has never been a fan of heights. This isnโt that high, though, and you nudge him playfully. Well, it doesnโt seem high to you. โI think you can manage. Come on.โย
Climbing up to the top is always your least favorite part because it uses the most energy. Not that you mind the activity, itโs just a lot of work for a relatively short ride back down the hill on the sled. At least this hill has stairs built into the slope off to the side to help you. Once youโre at the top, you plop down with Mingyu right beside you. Itโs less about catching your breath and more about appreciating the view. It seems like you can see for miles even though youโre not that high up. The sun starts to rise and you know itโs all worth it. All the shades of orange and pink stretch across the horizon as the sun makes its way over the distant mountains. There arenโt any words that come to mind to really capture how beautiful it is. The colors are more vibrant against the white of the snow all around you. Everything feels magnified in the quiet space. All either of you can do is utter out a soft wow to express your awe.ย
And then the quiet really is broken.
โOkay you expect me to slide down that on a piece of plastic?โ he asks with a hint of panic in his voice.ย
You follow his gaze and look down the hill, because it really is only a hill. Not anything crazy. It always looks a little more intimidating from the top, but it isnโt anything all that high.ย
โOh come on you giant baby,โ you tease and nudge him. โWe got all the way up here, how else are you going to get down?โย
โWalk back down the stairs they so nicely provided?โ he offers.ย
โThatโs crazy,โ you say.
โIโm afraid of heights!โ he shouts, more panic in his voice.ย
โI know, Gyu,โ you say, instantly softening as you approach him to put your hand on his arm.ย
โI didnโt really think this through,โ he admits.
โWhy did you agree to sledding down a hill?โ you ask, genuinely curious.ย
Heโs quiet for a moment as he looks out over vista before him. You watch as a calm comes back over him. The kind of calm that can only come from a setting as pretty as this one. Watch him take a couple steadying breaths. Even though youโve been friends with Mingyu for years, youโve never really seen his fear of heights firsthand. Couldnโt have imagined it would kick in for something as seemingly innocuous as a small sledding hill. Though, admittedly, it is a pretty decent size. Itโs definitely not just the kind of hill people sled down in their backyards or local parks.ย
โBecause I wanted to try sledding and do something new. And this hill seemed important to you,โ he says like itโs the most obvious thing in the world. โIโm not going to say no to something you ask me to do when you get that look in your eyes.โ
โWhat look?โ you ask to avoid considering a deeper meaning to his words.
โI donโt know. You get all starry eyed,โ he says with a shrug.ย
โHow about this? We can go down together and check it off the list. You donโt have to sled again,โ you offer.ย
โWe came all the way out here,โ he says, unsure.
โAnd I got to see the prettiest sunrise of my life with my best friend beside me,โ you say easily.
โOkay, okay. I can at least try,โ he says.
You get up and send the smaller of the sleds down the hill without anyone on it in case you really only take the one ride. It would be a hassle to have to come back up and get it. Then, you position yourself on the bigger sled thatโs meant for two people (or three kids sometimes when you were younger). Once youโre in place, you motion for Mingyu to settle in behind you. Point out where he can put his legs on either side of you, which already feels closer than normal even with how affectionate Mingyu can be. You adjust so that your back is pressed against his chest. Itโs about the right balance to the sled so that youโre less likely to topple over on the way down. Mingyu has to crowd into your space to wrap his arms around your middle because heโs bigger than you are, something you hadnโt considered when suggesting this. You can almost tell that heโs considering burying his face in your hair, but stops short.
At least, until you push over the edge with a combination of wiggling and using your hands to push your forward. Thatโs when he buries his face. Then, youโre slowly picking up speed as you slide down the completely untouched snow. Itโs always best like this, in your opinion. Before there are lanes carved into the snow. Yes, those lanes pack the snow down and can make you go faster, but you can also catch an edge and topple over more easily.ย
None of that is really on your mind once you start descending though. All you can think of is the way Mingyuโs body feels pressed against yours. How itโs very foreign but also very comforting. How you can understand why your whole family so easily believes that youโre together. The comfort is effortless, something you donโt ever think about. It just exists. You focus on how funny it is to have this giant of a man wrapped around you like a koala with his head buried in your hair now because heโs nervous. You donโt even consider any other way that it might make you feel. When you let out a squeal of delight as the sled picks up more speed, you feel, rather than hear, him grumble by the tickle of his breath in your hair. It only makes him cling more tightly to you.ย
Itโs almost disappointing when you feel the sled level out at the bottom of the hill and slow down. Itโs been the perfect way to relive one of the parts of your childhood that you loved the most. Getting to do silly little things like this really was one of the best parts of winter. Youโre fully stopped before you realize that Mingyu is still clinging to you with everything he has. So, you carefully place a hand over his and feel him untense the tiniest bit.
โItโs okay, we made it to the bottom in one piece.โย
Slowly, he loosens his grip on you and actually looks up. Again, you feel this rather than seeing it. You feel the absence of his body heat and only then realize just how tightly he was clinging to you. Mingyu pulls his face out of your hair and seems to look around, as if testing that youโre really at the bottom of the hill. Like heโs not sure itโs over that quickly.ย
โThat wasnโt so bad.โ
โNo, it was a lot of fun.โย
โDo you thinkโฆcould we maybe go again?โย
Both of you are standing up again now and it makes you whip your head around to look at him because you canโt believe this scaredy cat actually wants to go down again after how much it took to get him down the first time. His face is hopeful, though, and youโre not about to start saying no to that face now. Not when you never have before. So you match his smile.ย
โOn one condition,โ you finally say. Mingyu only looks at you like heโs waiting for you to continue. โYou have to actually keep your eyes open this time.โย
โYou donโt know I had my eyes closed,โ he insists with a pout.
โGyu, your face was in my hair,โ you say through a laugh.
โOkay, fine. Eyes open. But, I have my own condition, too,โ he fires back, still kind of pouting.ย
โYes?โ
โI want to ride together again.โย
Itโs easy to agree to that. Even though you donโt say it out loud, itโs kind of fun riding with him, especially when the hill is so untouched. Heโs tall and muscular, very helpful when it comes to carving a path and also picking up speed. He adds to the momentum and you like going faster. You donโt consider telling him that he wouldnโt go quite as fast without you because you would be losing on as well. Itโs not a bad deal for either of you, really. Mingyu gets to work a little on a fear of heights on something much more manageable and you get to live out your best sled dreams.ย
Each run gets a little bit easier. Mingyu holds up his end of the bargain and actually opens his eyes, which is more entertaining to you than it probably should be as he curses all the way down that first run. But, he keeps wanting to go and youโre not going to stop him. Donโt realize that maybe he also keeps going because he loves to see the way your face lights up each run. Neither of you makes an effort to get the other sled again either.ย
By the time the sun is fully risen, yours and Mingyuโs cheeks are rosy from the cold. And also from the way youโve taken to running back up the steps to the top like kids. You have to admit, even if it means heโll get a big head, this is the most fun youโve had in your hometown during the holidays in a long time. Honestly, it might actually be the most fun youโve had anywhere in a while. Itโs nice to get back to something simpler without worrying about anything else. Life can get busy back in the city between work and chores and endless responsibility. Sometimes itโs nice to just take a break from it all. Remember that there are more important things than just working all the time or being stressed about things you canโt really control. Maybe thereโs something to simplifying life a bit.ย
Now that the sun is rising, itโs a more acceptable time for people to be out and about themselves. Kids can convince their parents to take them sledding as well. At the first sign of people approaching, you and Mingyu agree that it should be your last run. Youโre starting to get a little tired and you know itโll get loud. You donโt mind having the kids around, you just know it gets harder to avoid everyone and you have to wait longer between each run. Besides, you planned something post sledding as well. It catches you off guard that he actually seems a little sad to be leaving.ย
That is, until you take him to this little hole in the wall of a breakfast place. Itโs something new because youโre not usually in this area when he comes with you to family events. Not that itโs far, itโs just a few towns over and there are closer places. Until winter comes around again and the elderly couple that runs the place roll out their secret recipe for hot cocoa. Honestly, you could probably just drink that without even ordering anything to eat and be the happiest person in the world. The food is amazing too, though, and you didnโt eat before leaving to go sledding. You and Mingyu order a few things to share and laugh all the way through it, talking about sledding and the trip so far.
โThanks for this,โ he says as breakfast is winding up.
Youโre a little surprised at both his words and the gentleness of his tone. โFor what?โ
โTaking me sledding like this. That sunrise was amazing and I, well, I guess I didnโt think Iโd have as much fun as I did,โ he admits, a little more shy than youโre used to.
โIโm glad you trusted me,โ you say and canโt quite place the look he gives you.
โI think Iโd trust you with just about anything.โย
The day before Christmas is always the same. By then, youโre in desperate need of a break from your family and you think they may be in need of a break from you as well. So, each year you get together with Seungkwan and some of your other friends that still live in the area. Anyone with a partner brings them along and you have a nice, boozy brunch. This year, Seungkwan is hosting because his place is spacious and the group seems a little bigger. Itโs also nice to get to really spend some time at his place since heโs only been there a few months.ย
Typically, a few people in the friend group will bring over some pre-made things to warm up the next day as well as everyone bringing whatever they want to drink and share. Thatโs the same for this year with a slight change. Mingyu, once he sees the kitchen, says that he just has to make some food as well. After taking an inventory, he heads back out to buy more things that he needs, ignoring any of your protests and only agreeing to take your card so you can sort out the cost with your friends. (Youโre not going to do that because you donโt mind just covering it, but you donโt want him to cover it either.)
When he gets back, he immediately goes into the kitchen and your friend Vernonโs girlfriend offers to help. She drags Seungkwanโs sister, who doesnโt usually come around, with her as well. Mingyu only leaves the kitchen long enough to bring you one of the mimosas that he made, insisting thereโs a special ingredient. Then, itโs back to fully focusing on the food. Not that you really mind. Itโs nice to just be in a low stress environment with your friends to catch up, have some drinks, and laugh a lot.ย
Vernon, after looking around to make sure nobody else is listening, shows you and Seungkwan the ring heโs been walking around with for the past few weeks. Apparently, heโs finally settled that heโs going to propose to his girlfriend tomorrow on Christmas Day. Youโre thrilled because theyโve been together forever and she already feels like family. Seungkwan nearly bursts into tears, which you have to quickly cover so nobody realizes whatโs happening. You love that your best friend is like that. Itโs just not the time if you want to keep it a secret that Vernon wants to propose.ย
It also feels nice to be in a group where you donโt have to pretend. Nothing changes all that much for how you and Mingyu are together because heโs always affectionate with you. But, you get to trade any of the not-so-subtle comments about when youโre going to get married to the relentless teasing about how he passes as your boyfriend so easily. Itโs nice to have someone joking about it and you find you donโt even mind. Especially when Mingyu chimes in with his own little comments from the kitchen. There seems like thereโs a lot of laughter in there as well.ย
โYouโre going to have to dress him better if heโs going to keep posing as your boyfriend,โ Seungkwan jokes and you look over at the kitchen.ย
Mingyu is wearing this kind of awful green zip up sweater. Itโs not even that nice, soft material. But, he insisted on wearing it because he wanted to wear something with Christmas colors and it was the only thing he had apart from his outfit for tomorrow. It makes you roll your eyes again remembering it.
โI know,โ you sigh. โUsually he dresses so well and then thereโs that.โย
Your eyes drift back over to him in the kitchen again and you kind of wish you hadnโt looked back. You catch him as something falls off a spoon heโs using to taste test and onto his skin. And, without seeming to think about it, he sucks it off his hand. Then, licks along his finger for good measure. It makes your heart stutter a little in a way thatโs completely foreign to you. Why are you so entirely transfixed by someone whoโs supposed to be your best friend and fake boyfriend doing that?
โHey, you good?โ Seungkwan asks, snapping in front of your eyes.
You shake your head to clear it before turning back to him. โYeah, sorry, zoned out for a second.โ
โUh huh,โ he says skeptically, but you catch his eyes darting over to Mingyu.ย
โDonโt,โ you warn him, causing him to throw his hands up in defense.ย
โI wonโt,โ he says. โBut, if you decide you want to talk about itโฆโ
โTalk about what?โ Mingyu asks. You hadnโt even seen him leave the kitchen.ย
โThe issue sheโs having with Mimi,โ Seungkwan lies quickly.ย
Mingyu rolls his eyes. โShe wonโt leave me alone.โย
โAnd that seems to be driving both of you crazy,โ Seungkwan observes.ย
โWell, yeah, our bestie is just being a good friend and she knows Iโm uncomfortable,โ Mingyu says before you can answer. Is that all it is? For the first time, youโre not sure.
โIโm not sure how I feel about sharing a best friend,โ Seungkwan says with feigned distaste.
Mingyu tries to give The Look again, but fails even worse than with you. Nobody can outdo Seungkwan and so he gives up. โFood is ready.โย
โOh good, Iโm starving,โ Vernon interrupts.ย
The rest of brunch goes by without Seungkwan making any other comments. To you, at least. You donโt see him sit down next to Mingyu after the food is done like itโs casual and unplanned. Nothing that man ever does is either of those things, though. What you do notice is how easily he fits into this group of friends. Sure, he knows Seungkwan pretty well and heโs met nearly everyone there. But, he doesnโt get to spend much time around them. Not really, in the grand scheme of things. It isnโt really surprising, if you think about it, because theyโre all close friends of yours and he tends to think you have good taste where friends are concerned.
It is a little weird, you think as Mingyu sits on the other side of the room, that he seems to be a little glued to his phone now that things are getting closer to wrapping up. He checks it mid conversation and furrows his brow at whatever he sees. Both seem unusual. Mingyu is always one of those people that gives his full attention to a conversation. Unless itโs an emergency, he likes to be present in a moment. Itโs one of your favorite things about him. Itโs also unlike him to be so upset by something on his phone. You canโt think of any person that would be creating that reaction from him. Or anyone that he wouldnโt just ignore until later. You try to put it out of your mind as best you can. If itโs something serious, heโll talk to you about it. At least, you hope.ย
Any other time, you would be thrilled to have your favorite cousin staying at your parentsโ house for the holidays. Sheโs always been your confidant and one of your safe spaces. Now? You canโt stand it. You really wish she would be literally anywhere else. Just the sight of her is getting to be enough to set you off. It seems like sheโs really taking it to heart that Mingyu is single. Youโre not sure what her game is and you hate it.ย
Of course, she manages to corner you the second youโre back to your parentsโ house. Youโre not exactly paying all that much attention, though. The end of brunch with your friends had been a little weird, even if nobody else noticed it. Mingyu accepted all the praise for the things he made, but was distracted by his phone. Someone, youโre not really sure who, kept sending him messages. Whatever it was didnโt seem to be making him happy. Not that you really have any right to ask him whoโs blowing up his phone. Itโs just a little weird. Usually heโs so present in events like brunch. Itโs odd to see him constantly checking his phone. Odder still that he had headed off to the bedroom as soon as you got back. Youโre a little buzzed from the mimosas. Mingyu, on the other hand, is very sober.
โThere you are,โ Mimi says, appearing as if out of thin air. It makes you jump back, hand on your heart.
โJesus,โ you gasp out.
โNo, Mimi,โ she jokes. Any other time, it would make you laugh. Youโre not so entertained with her now.ย
โWhat are you sneaking up on me for?โ you ask instead.ย
She rolls her eyes and looks around. โIโm not sneaking up on you. I was just trying to catch you away from the others.โ
โWhy?โ
โWhy do you have that fake boyfriend of yours on such a tight leash?โ
Out of habit, you look around to make sure nobody is listening. Everyone seems too busy, though. โI donโt have Mingyu on a leash.โ
โThen explain why heโs basically refusing to answer any of my texts,โ she says, arms crossed.
โI donโt know whyโฆwait a minute. Was it you texting him while we were at brunch?โ you ask.
This, somehow, seems to satisfy her. โOh, so heโs not telling you whoโs texting him.โย
โI didnโt ask, honestly.โ
โWell, I donโt see why heโd be ignoring - โ
Your brain catches up then. โHang on. How the fuck did you get his number?โย
Mimi rolls her eyes again with a huff. โPlease. Youโve had the same passcode on your phone for ages. I just grabbed it when you left your phone out.โย
โThatโs so fucked, Mimi. You canโt just go through my phone or take his number,โ you say.ย
โYouโre no fun anymore,โ she says with a whine.
Youโre not interested in hearing anything else she has to say because you just want to talk to Mingyu. This is getting insane that sheโs going to this amount of trouble just to try to get to him. Yet, itโs also weird he kept it to himself that she was texting him. The two of you have talked a lot about the shit Mimi pulls in order to get close to him. Why is it different now that sheโs texting him while heโs out with your friends? Is he starting to get worn out from dealing with the insanity of your family? Every other time heโs been around, itโs been really chill. This time, not so much.ย
Up in your room, you donโt initially see Mingyu. Youโre not sure what youโre expecting. Maybe him on his phone texting or else complaining to another friend about how this whole trip is going. Or even talking to his sister about getting out to see her instead of staying here. None of that happens, though. Instead, you find him in the bathroom applying a face mask. Itโs a little ridiculous and definitely the last thing you expect. But, you also know that itโs a sign heโs carrying some amount of stress.ย
Thatโs the thing about being as close to someone as you are to Mingyu. To most people, heโs got this unfailing streak of energy and kindness. Heโs the kind of person that lets himself be bullied by all his friends even though he could definitely take them. Itโs all part of making sure everyone is enjoying themselves and most things just roll off his broad shoulders. There are hidden depths to him, too. Sometimes he gets a little worn out because heโll keep things to himself instead of burdening someone else. He takes so much onto his own plate and you wish he wouldnโt. At least, not always. Heโll go until it feels a little unbearable and then finally speak up. Heโll force a smile even when he doesnโt feel like it just to make sure nobody else realizes anything is wrong. In a way, he folds in on himself a little. But, youโve been friends for years so you know his tells. Know how to spot the signs. It takes you a little longer this time surrounded by family and some friends. This is one of those signs, though. Taking the time to do a face mask, even if itโs in the middle of the day, to just give him an excuse to be quiet.ย
Youโre not usually the one to initiate physical contact with him. Not because you donโt want to, he just never really gives you the chance. Heโs like a human koala most of the time. With his back to the door and his eyes closed to enjoy the feeling of the mask, he doesnโt even hear you approach. Your hands wind around his waist, hugging him tightly from the back and your head rests between his shoulder blades. For the briefest moment, he tenses and you worry that heโs using this as a break from you. Then, he realizes itโs just you and his entire body relaxes. He puts his hands over yours and sighs softly. After a moment, it doesnโt seem like itโs enough because he turns in your arms and pulls you tight against his chest, wrapping you so tightly in his own arms that you would complain in any other situation. Not now, though. Not when heโs putting himself through all of this just so you donโt have to have a stressful holiday experience.ย
When itโs like this, you donโt dream of pulling away from Mingyu. Thereโs so much that he does for you and itโs so rare that you can do anything for him in return. So, youโll stay tightly pressed against him as long as he wants. You wonโt be the one to break the hug first. If you can take even a little bit of whatever heโs feeling onto your own shoulders, you will. This trip has been so much better than you could have expected in most ways and youโre determined to be more conscious of his needs. Eventually, he does pull away and let you look up into his face. He looks much more at peace than you expect. Maybe your hugs do have healing powers like he always says. Mingyu turns to remove the face mask and wipe his face before turning back to you.
โIโm sorry,โ you say softly into the space between you.ย
โFor what?โ he asks.ย
โFor the whole drama that is my family,โ you start. โMostly, for Mimi, though.โย
โAh,โ he says and his face falls a little.
โGyu, I would never have put you in this position if I had known she would be like this,โ you say earnestly.ย
โI donโt think anyone could have guessed sheโd pull all this,โ he says with a humorless laugh.
โYou shouldโve told me that she was texting you and bugging you like that,โ you say without any accusation. You just want to be able to share in his burden.
He only shrugs. โWe were with your friends and you looked so happy. I didnโt want to bring it down. How did you even find out she was texting me?โย
โShe told me,โ you say with an eye roll.ย
โReally?โ
โWell, she cornered me and asked why I had you on such a tight leashโฆโ
โKinky,โ he interrupts and it nearly makes you choke.ย
โAnd then, when I asked how she even got your number, she told me sheโd gone into my phone and taken it,โ you say to avoid thinking too deeply about Mingyu and any kinks he might have.ย
โBold,โ he observes.ย
โDo you like that?โ you ask before you can stop yourself.
The second the question comes out of your mouth, you wish you could take it back. What is going on with your brain today? First youโre losing your train of thought watching Mingyu lick something off his finger. Then, youโre wondering about his kinks. Now, youโre wondering if he likes someone thatโs a little bit bold. Itโs got to just be the atmosphere that youโre in. Or that youโre pretending to date him. Itโs messing with your mind and youโre not responsible for the way you act.ย
The worst part is that Mingyuโs entire face changes. He gets that knowing look on his face when he meets your eyes. A little cocky. The look that says he knows just how attractive he can be. Itโs not usually directed at you and youโre not really sure what to do now that it is.ย
โSometimes,โ he says. โNot necessarily from someone Iโm not actually interested in, though.โย
โGood to know.โย
Mingyu arches an eyebrow and okay, thatโs devastating. Maybe youโre still a little under the influence of the mimosas. Thereโs no other explanation for the way your knees go a little weak at such a simple movement. โIs it?โ
โHuh?โ you ask, shaking your head to clear it.
โYou said it was good to know and I asked if it was,โ he repeats, smirk only deepening.
โOh, sure,โ you say and he seems momentarily surprised. โYou know, so I can tell Mimi.โ
Youโre actually not entirely sure what makes you say it. Itโs not like you would ever want him to consider Mimi. It might actually drive you crazy if he went for her. He gets that look on his face that youโre all too familiar with. Affection mixed with exasperation. Nobody seems to get it more than you.
โToo bad for her that Iโm very much not interested,โ he says.ย
โShame. I donโt know how I would get over the loss.โ
โLuckily you donโt have to because youโre stuck with me.โ
โUntil you actually have a crush on someone again.โย
Even though you say it, you want to take it back as soon as it comes out of your mouth. Images come rushing into your mind of Mingyu falling in love with someone that actually lasts. Someone that could take your best friend away from you. Which should be what you want, right? You should want him to be happy. And you do.ย You just canโt really stand the thought of a life where heโs happy without you being right there by his side. This trip makes you think about a lot more than you bargained for.ย
โI do have a crush,โ he says softly.
โOh, of course,โ you say and look away from him. Thatโs fine. This is all fine.
His finger is under your chin the next second to pull your face back around to his. Itโs the look of patience that you also see a lot. Especially when heโs trying to teach you something in the kitchen. Or explain something from work. Or really just talk about anything heโs passionate about.ย
โThe crush is on you, dummy,โ he says softly.ย
โWhat?โ you ask, not sure you heard him correctly.ย
With a shake of his head, he steps back to lean against the bathroom. โOf all the times I pictured telling you this, I never considered telling you in the bathroom attached to your old bedroom at your parentsโ house.โย
โWe donโtโฆโ you start and he shakes his head again.
โNo, this probably fits,โ he says with a light laugh. The kind when heโs just a little caught off guard himself. โI thought I wanted to tell you after brunch with your friends and, I donโt know, I could be misreading the whole thing, but I think youโre ready to hear it now too. I like you. Iโve been more than happy just to be your friend because I didnโt want to say something before we were both ready. Iโm happy to be here as your friend thatโs only pretending to date you because Iโd do anything to make life easier for you.โ
โMingyu,โ you say, so low itโs barely above a whisper. Like youโre afraid to break the quiet in the limited space between you.ย
โYou donโt have to sayโฆโ he starts, only to be interrupted by a loud knock at your bedroom door.ย
Your senses are entirely overwhelmed and you wonder what he sees as you look up at him, eyes wide in wonder. Before this, you would say that your brain could process too many things all at the same time. That it always had a million things going on. Now, you canโt seem to do any of that. Canโt focus on anything other than your beautiful best friend before you and the fact that apparently he has feelings for you. You see his mouth move, assume itโs to answer the knock, and have to shake yourself back to reality. Need to come out of this day dream so that you can react to whoever is at the door.ย
โToo bad, lovebirds, you have to come downstairs. Attendance for games and cookie decorating is mandatory on Christmas Eve,โ your cousin calls back.ย
โMimi, justโฆโ you start to call out to her and Mingyu shakes his head.
โWeโll be right down!โ he cuts across you. He waits, seeming like heโs listening for the sound of Mimi walking away from the door. How he can hear anything over the pounding of your heart seems unthinkable. Somehow, he must hear something because he turns back to you with soft eyes and speaks in an even softer voice. โItโs okay, we can talk tonight after dinner or when we come to bed. Thereโs no pressure for you to even say anything. Our friendship is the most important thing in the world to me.โย
With that, he gives you a quick peck on the top of the head. Something thatโs immediately gentler than anything youโve experienced with him during the entire course of your friendship. The smile he gives you as he steps around you to lead the way down to interact with your family has you go weak in the knees. Has he ever smiled at you like that before? Or is it a new smile? Once upon a time, you would have said that you had every facial expression of his memorized from years spent in each otherโs company. Years spent sharing private jokes, going on adventures, complaining about work and family and everything in between. But maybe, you think, there are still things that you can learn about Mingyu. Maybe there are still things that you can learn from him as well.ย
When you donโt immediately follow after him, Mingyu turns around to grab your hand and pull you along with him. Thereโs something about the way he threads his fingers through yours and squeezes that makes your heart pound again before settling down. His touch is gentle, like it always is, and filled with complete care. You donโt notice the way he glances back at you every few steps. Not with concern, but with curiosity. He would have bet he knew your every facial expression and canโt fully place the way you look now. Somehow, even though he canโt completely tell what youโre thinking, he knows that he made the right decision. Knows it was time to tell you whatโs been on his mind. Knows that, no matter what, heโs still going to have his best friend on the other side of this trip.
Itโs chaos once you and Mingyu get downstairs, like it always is at your parentsโ house on Christmas Eve. Though, this definitely seems a little busier than years past. Youโre not sure why that is either, but everyone seems to want to join in on the traditions that your parents cling to. In any case, itโs a good thing for you because it lets you just blend into the group of people without your parents paying entirely too much attention to you. Mingyu uses your hand intertwined with his to pull you into him, the way he has countless other times on this trip, and presses a kiss to your temple. Then, heโs off into the kitchen, throwing a joke at your mom about how heโs here now and she doesnโt need to worry. He looks over his shoulder and winks at you as your mother puts him to work mixing ingredients. You honestly donโt even know how you react in response. It must be okay, though, because he smiles back at you.
You love to decorate the cookies and will happily help make them in other situations, but there are already too many cooks in the kitchen. Instead, you help to set up some of the card tables that your parents keep for times like these. It gives people the chance to figure out what they might want to play and who they want to join them. It really is a nice tradition, no matter how you feel about your parents. And since your mother usually spends more time on baking and decorating the cookies, she doesnโt notice if things get a little too competitive between you and the cousins. Or if your father eggs the rest of you on while he watches. She has her favorite parts and lets everyone else do whatever it is they want to do. As long as everyone takes a break to help with decorating the cookies. Not that itโs ever a concern, thatโs most peopleโs favorite part.ย
Once the tables are all set up, you settle into a board game with some of your cousins. Usually, youโre one of the more competitive ones. Board games come pretty easily to you and you pick up on the strategy quickly. If your cousins notice that youโre not nearly as invested this time, they let you have it. And they do notice it, pretty quickly, but let you have it. Itโs easy to see youโre distracted and to see that you keep glancing into the kitchen at Mingyu. They just let you have it. Itโs in their best interest, anyway. Itโs nice to get the chance to win without you being fully committed to beating everyone around you.ย
This kind of setting really gives you a chance to think without shutting yourself away in your bedroom. Thatโs too obvious. You canโt just say that your best friend confessed feelings for you and now you need to figure out what your own feelings are. Not when heโs pretending to be your boyfriend already. Not when your whole family already thinks youโre lying about having just gotten together with him. And not when your mother would probably kill you if you missed out on traditions that may be older than you are.ย
All the spiralling in your brain is just cover, you realize, for the bigger picture. Mingyu likes you and he thinks this is the right time to have a conversation about it. He also knows that your friendship is the most important. You agree. Heโs one of the most important people in your life, but is he more than that to you too? Is it possible that itโs more than friendship? Thatโs not something you ever considered. When you and Mingyu met in university it was through someone you were dating at the time. The relationship was, fortunately, very short lived. But the friendship with Mingyu, that was the stuff of stories. That instant connection that survived the breakup. The two of you always joke that your friendship was meant to be and thatโs why it lasted when the relationship didnโt. Why others could come and go from your lives but you two are forever. Especially when either of you has dated someone that had an issue with the friendship. Itโs insane to think that men and women canโt be friends. A completely archaic way of thinking.ย
That makes you think about your friendship with Seungkwan, though. Someone in your life who has also always been a constant. Someone who supports all your rights and your wrongs, even if he gives you a hard time too. And thatโs when something else clicks. Your past partners havenโt objected to your friendship with Seungkwan nearly as often as your friendship with Mingyu. Itโs not that heโs not attractive, because he definitely is. It canโt be that youโre not as close. Seungkwan has been with you through a lot. It could be that there's been more distance between you and him since you moved away, but youโre not sure thatโs it either. Heโs a constant in your life even from a distance. When you canโt see him, you regularly FaceTime him. So, no, heโs still present even if heโs not in the same city.ย
And then it hits you. You donโt watch Seungkwan lick something off his finger while heโs cooking.ย You donโt get jealous of your cousin hitting on him, regardless of what else is going on. You donโt seek out physical affection in the same way. Donโt find yourself looking over at Seungkwan for his reaction to everything going on around you. Donโt want to know his thoughts on something before you make each big decision. Seungkwan is your best friend and he means the world to you, but the thought of him constantly kissing you on the cheek or the temple or forehead or even the back of your hand doesnโt unleash butterflies in your stomach.ย
Holy shit. Youโre in love with Mingyu. Definitely in way over your head with feelings that should have been obvious to you. Itโs impossible to pinpoint when it might have happened or how. Maybe there isnโt a specific time. Maybe itโs something that happens slowly over time. You know that when you first became friends it was only that, a friendship. Someone that you could be yourself around and feel at home with in a very foreign environment. Somewhere along the way, itโs morphed into more. He really is the person you want to share all your news with, the person that you look to for support first. Itโs so clear to you that your feelings are there now that heโs confessed and gotten you thinking about it. When you meet his eyes across the room, you wonder if he can see the realization on your face.ย
Now that you realize that you also have feelings for Mingyu, youโre not sure how you missed it before. If you consider the traits youโre looking for in a partner, he ticks off every box. And if youโre being completely honest, heโs been the reason for adding some traits to your list. So, not that youโll admit this to any of your most recent exes, but maybe they had a point when they questioned your relationship with Mingyu. Not a big point. They still had shitty reasons for disliking Mingyu, but a small point nonetheless.ย
The rest of the evening seems to go by entirely too slowly, even if you do enjoy yourself. Much to the dismay of your cousins, youโre no longer distracted and you proceed to kick their asses at any game they suggest. You do go a little easier on them than normal, though, and avoid any of the trash talk. Thankfully Seungkwan isnโt there to point out that being in a good mood makes you soft. Even decorating the cookies is more fun than you can remember. You try not to think about whether thatโs because Mingyu sits right next to you the whole time, trying to sabotage your cookie designs or make you laugh with his own. Spoiler alert: it absolutely is and youโre already down horrendous. Itโs even easier to act like a cute couple in love now than it was before. And you also ignore the realization that it being so easy to pretend to be in a relationship with your best friend should have also been an indicator. Nobody ever said you were the most observant when it came to your own feelings.ย
Finally, you get a free moment to go upstairs. Itโs time to get changed for Christmas Eve dinner and that gives you both the chance to excuse yourselves. The only person who seems to be tracking the movement with some amount of interest is Mimi. Youโre too caught up in reaching out for Mingyuโs hand to notice, though. His smile at the action is immediately familiar and new. Familiar because you know his face better than your own and new because you didnโt expect to see him looking at you like that.
โI didnโt expect your mom to have me working so hard in the kitchen helping with the cookie dough,โ he says once you close the door.ย
โOh, I did,โ you say through a snort.ย
โHow was the - โย
โYou were right.โย
You both go to speak at the same time and Mingyuโs mouth closes the second he realizes what you said. Whatever he wants to ask dies on his tongue over three words from your mouth. They might just be the second best three words you could say to him right then.ย
โAbout?โ he prompts.ย
โIt was the right time to tell me,โ you confirm for him. Itโs clear that heโs biting his tongue to let you say whatever you need to. Even if he knows by the look on your face. โI like you too.โย
โThank fucking god,โ he says with an exhale. โWhen Seungkwan told me that I should tell you because he caught you watching me, I thought he was being a shit andโฆโ
โWait, what?โ you ask. Fucking Seungkwan. Of course.
โOh, yeah, at brunch earlier he said that he noticed you watching me while I was cooking and that if I liked you like he thought I did, that I should probably tell you,โ he says a little sheepishly.ย
โYou know what? Forget Seungkwan. I need to see something,โ you say and close the space between you.ย
Before Mingyu can ask anything, youโre on your tiptoes, hands cupping his face and lips pressed to his. He wraps his arms around your lower back to pull you tighter against his body without missing a beat. And that really is all you need to know. Everything is in that first real kiss. Any lingering hesitations slip away. You can feel his promises and the answers to the questions you know youโll have to actually ask in that kiss. For now, it just feels like coming home. Like you found the person that can get through all the bullshit and remind you about whatโs actually important in life.ย
โWow,โ you say when you pull away.
โYeah,โ he agrees.ย
โIs that what Iโve been missing out on?โ you wonder.
โJust how long have you liked me?โ he says with an all too knowing smirk.ย
โI only realized today so Iโve got some catch up to do,โ you joke.ย
โWe both do, I think,โ he says.ย
Without having to say a word, both of you get ready for Christmas dinner since your mother insists that you get dressed up. Every few seconds one of you seems to catch the other looking. It feels exciting, but youโre also a little shy. Thereโs a lot to talk about and a lot to navigate. You know you canโt put it aside. It just doesnโt feel as time sensitive now. This is one of the most important people in your life and itโs going to work out. At least, if you can get through the whole drawn out affair that is dinner first.ย
Which you do. Through all your motherโs courses and all the formality that she insists on following, you have Mingyu by your side. Youโre not even distracted by Mimi on the other side of the table. She canโt seem to take her eyes off you while you and Mingyu canโt take your eyes off each other. More than once, you entirely miss a question and Mingyu has to nudge you to prompt you. Itโs not your fault, you reason. Heโs just so insanely attractive and made all the more so because you know that heโs a genuinely wonderful person.ย
Every part of you wants to skip the after dinner drinks and go back upstairs with Mingyu, but he quietly insists that you should stay. Even laughs when you turn his signature pout back around on him. If he makes a good point that you have nothing but time, you still want to take advantage of some of that time right now. Instead, you sip on your rumchata and curl into Mingyu on the oversized armchair by the fire. Despite trying to leave a little bit of space, youโre basically sitting on his lap at his own insistence.ย
Once the first people start to call it a night, you look at Mingyu with nearly pleading eyes. That gets a light laugh out of him as he nods to agree that you can go upstairs to your bedroom. You say your goodnights to everyone in the room, wish people a Happy Christmas Eve, and lead the way back up to your room even though he doesnโt need the directionsย
Itโs nice to have uninterrupted time to figure everything out with Mingyu now that your feelings are out in the open. And once youโre both changed and through your skincare routines, you get into bed just to talk. Itโs remarkable how much can fall into place so easily. Itโs obvious that he figured out his feelings first. You insist that yours are already just as strong. The two of you depend on each other in everything without realizing it. Turn to each other for support. Share in all the best news. Suffer through any heartbreak together. In the years of friendship, thereโs something deeper than either of you ever expected.
Honestly, itโs not even something either of you just held onto or harbored for years. The feelings really came suddenly. Mingyu shares that he wasnโt just waiting around to tell you that he had feelings for you. He also shares, though you already know, that no part of him felt entitled to your returned feelings. Had Seungkwan not said something, heโs not even sure if or when he would have said something. The last thing he would ever want was to make you uncomfortable. As much as he cares about you and wants to explore the relationship, youโre also the best friend heโs ever had. You feel the same. Itโs a little scary and exciting at the same time. You trust Mingyu with your heart in a way that youโve never trusted anyone else.
Itโs entirely too late into the night by the time you and Mingyu fall asleep. How the two of you have so much to say at this point in the friendship is something to be studied. But, eventually you drift off, completely intertwined with Mingyu. Heโs been a cuddler this whole trip and youโre not sure how heโs gotten himself even more attached to you. Yet, he does. Itโs like any space between you would be too much. Itโs too much satisfaction to give him that heโs right. He can tell anyway.ย
When you wake up, it feels too early. A fact only confirmed when you check your phone. None of the little cousins or your cousins with kids are staying at your parentsโ house. So, you know that it doesnโt have to be an early start to the morning. You consider if you can drift off back to sleep. In the night, you ended up with Mingyu spooning you. His arm is loosely draped over you and your back is pressed somewhat lightly into his chest. When you go to adjust to think about drifting back off, your ass brushes against his hips, you feel something press into you. That stops you for a moment. Obviously, you and Mingyu talked about sex the night before. About how you wanted to try to take it a little slower since this means so much to both of you. And obviously you know that itโs relatively common for a guy to wake up a little hard. Your brain knows all those things. Knows what you should do. You should just reposition and go back to sleep.ย
Thatโs not what you actually do though.ย
So carefully that it could be an accident, you wiggle against him, a little harder this time. You yawn like youโre actually just adjusting to get comfortable and fall back asleep. He might let you get away with it, too, if you didnโt do it more than once, pressing further back into him each time. You know heโs awake by the sharp intake of breath and then the way he moves his hand to grip your thigh. The way his fingertips dig into your skin there makes you grind back harder without pretending itโs anything else.ย
Mingyu puts his lips to your ear. โAre you trying to drive me crazy?โย
โNo,โ you whisper.ย
โI thought we said we were going to take it slow,โ he says with incredible difficulty.
โI can move slower,โ you answer immediately. It feels gratifying when he snaps his hips into your ass.ย
โYouโre teasing me,โ he whines.
โNot if I follow through,โ you say. โI want you, Mingyu. I donโt want to wait.โย
โFuck,โ he hisses as you continue to grind into him. โI want you to.โย
โThenโฆโ you start and immediately cut off as his hand winds back around to your front. He grabs your pussy through your shorts that suddenly feel too flimsy. Runs his long middle finger up your core and you immediately know you started something that heโs going to finish.ย
But his hand is gone entirely too quickly. Worse still, he pulls back. Itโs only long enough for him to turn you towards him and then pull you on top of him. Your brain catches back up once youโre straddle over him and he pulls your face towards him. You kiss him like you havenโt yet. Full of desire and desperation. Nothing like the first few kisses you share. Those kisses were to make sure this was right. This kiss is to ruin him. Maybe to ruin yourself as well. His hands are on your hips, anchoring you to him, not that thereโs anywhere else you could possibly be.ย
Itโs never been like this with anyone. Just some heavy kissing and youโre already getting turned on. Already wondering whatโs next. What itโs going to feel like. If Mingyu is the type of person that will take his time with you. Itโs hard to imagine when he seems just as desperate as you are. At least, he tries to anchor you in a certain position so that you canโt grind too much. Maybe he does want to savor it. You really are down horrendous for this man because you think you could just kiss him like this forever and never quite get enough.ย
All too soon, Mingyu rolls the pair of you over again. Now heโs hovering over you and nobody has any business being that hot. And then he pulls back, somewhat straddling your legs without putting too much weight on you. In one movement, he pulls his shirt over his head and casts it aside. Okay, now you really think that nobody has any business being that hot. And sure, youโve seen him shirtless before. This is just different. You donโt even realize as heโs reaching for your shirt until you feel his fingers brush the skin of your stomach. Heโs looking for permission, but youโre a little impatient and pull the shirt off yourself. Youโre not sure that anyone has ever looked at your body with so much love. Like heโs just as amazed as you are. He peppers your chest and your chest and your stomach with kisses. Showing you just how much he loves every bit of you. Itโs the safest feeling in the world and youโre not really sure how you got this lucky.ย
Mingyu is so gentle when he pulls your shorts off. Trails kisses along your thighs as well and makes you shiver. Chuckles when he pulls his own off and you swallow at the sight of him. Heโs a big guy and somehow youโre still not expecting his dick to be big like it is. Havenโt ever really thought about it in all the time youโve been friends. You expect him to be all confident seeing your reaction. Thereโs something else there too, though. Like heโs a little nervous about this. Youโre not really sure what to say to reassure him, so you just pull him back to you to kiss him again. He adjusts into you almost immediately, half laying on top of you while still making sure that heโs not crushing you.
This time kissing him is very different, though. He moves one hand between your legs. Itโs gentle at first. He only runs his finger up your center a few times. Catches each moan with his kisses. Slowly works a finger inside you and pumps at a languid pace. It turns you into a whiny, squirming mess entirely too quickly. Empties any thoughts or worries out of your head. You know you canโt be too loud and you hate it. Nobody should be able to kiss this well while also hitting the perfect spot with each pass of his fingers. He adds a second finger and youโre sure that youโre done for. Sure that nothing else will ever feel as perfect as him again. You reach to stroke him and he pulls back.ย
โWhatโs wrong?โ you ask, unable to hide the concern in your voice.
โNo, nothing,โ he assures you quickly. โI just, um, well I really want to fuck you and Iโm not sure I could handle it ifโฆโ
โDo you have a condom?โ you ask, already ready to say it doesnโt matter if you have to.
โI might?โ he says more like a question and gets off the bed to cross to his bag with too much speed. In any other situation you might laugh. Now, you just want to feel him. A moment later, after rifling through his bag, he comes back up with one.ย
Heโs moving back to you, unwrapping the condom, and then he looks up at you. Thereโs a question in his eyes.
โYes, Mingyu, I want this. And yes, I want it here,โ you assure him.ย
Thankfully, thatโs the only confirmation he needs. In the next second, heโs pumping himself a few times and rolling the rubber onto himself. You move to reposition, but he doesnโt let you. He gently presses you back and gets between your legs. Carefully, he lines himself up and presses in.ย
โOh fuck,โ you hiss out, trying to stay quiet.ย
โToo much?โ he asks and stills.
โNo, Gyu, just move, please,โ you whine out, pulling him into you.ย
He does exactly what you ask and snaps his hips so heโs fully buried inside you. Itโs a stretch in the best way. Like this is exactly how itโs supposed to be. You canโt help it, you moan out the first time he thrusts and he catches the second moan with another bruising kiss. Probably better to have bruised lips than to have your family hear the screams you let out as he fucks you. Probably better than having them hear his moans as well. They vibrate through his chest and it gives you a sense of pride. Mingyu is a taker in every sense of his life. You know that it must be killing him to keep quiet now.ย
The two of you fall into a perfect rhythm without even trying. Thereโs nothing awkward about it being your first time. Knowing each other as well as you do as friends seems to translate here. Or maybe Mingyu just pays much closer attention to you than you realize. You run your nails down his back and his thrusts stutter so you do it again. That seems to get to him. He picks up the paces of his thrusts. Pulls his dick almost all the way out of you before quickly snapping his hips to bury himself in your pussy again. Never in your life has sex as simple as this position felt so good. Never has anyone youโve dated felt this perfect.ย
When Mingyuโs thrusts start to stutter, you reach down between your bodies to rub your clit. Seconds later, your pussy clenches around Mingyu and your vision whites out. You can feel Mingyu release and try to pick up the pace to work him through his own orgasm. He half collapses on you, breathing heavy. Both of you have to catch your breath from all the kisses to muffle the noises as well. He tries to roll over so that heโs not on top of you and you cling to him, not ready to lose contact just yet.
โIโm not going anywhere,โ he assures you.
โI know.โย
โThat wasโฆโย
โBetter than I was expecting.โย
You can feel his eyes on you even without looking and it makes you smile. Can imagine what heโs about to say before he even opens his mouth.
โOh, you didnโt think Iโd be any good?โย
You laugh at that as you turn to face him. โNo, I thought youโd be good. I just didnโt expect our first time where we had to be quiet because weโre in my parents house to be that good.โย
He considers your words for a second.
โI guess I can take that,โ he concedes.ย
โCome on. We have to clean up and get downstairs,โ you say and he sighs dramatically. But, then he gets up and helps you up with him.ย
Half an hour later, youโre downstairs at the kitchen table sipping on a peppermint mocha latte and picking out your favorite pastries from the spread your mother has out. Mingyu has his chair pulled close to you and his arm along the back of your chair. Your cousin is sitting on your other side, cheerily humming under her breath. In a strange move, she isnโt even trying to speak to Mingyu. Just as youโre trying to figure out whatโs going on with her, she turns to you.
โHave a good morning?โ she asks knowingly.
โWeโll talk about it later,โ you hiss back, casting your eyes around.ย
โNo need,โ she waves off and shoots a smirk at you. โI got exactly what I wanted.โย
โI donโtโฆโย
โSeungkwan and I have been talking a lot. Plotting, I guess you could say. Seems like it finally paid off,โ she says and your jaw hangs open.ย
โAre youโฆdid you justโฆโ you stutter out.ย
โAs long as itโs real now,โ she says and doesnโt wait for confirmation. Doesnโt need it, when itโs written all over your face. โWe can talk about it later but I am sorry.โย
โYou and fucking Seungkwan,โ you grumble.ย
It is a weight off your chest, though. Mimi has always been your favorite. A safe space in all the insanity of your family. Itโs good to know that sheโs still that for you. The two of you can argue about her methods, or her alliance with Seungkwan, later. Itโs hard to ignore that it did actually help. Youโre in this place because some of your favorite people meddled to help you and Mingyu see sense. Maybe you can say all is well that ends well.ย
In between all the chaos of breakfast and making sure the presents are under the tree, you manage to tell Mingyu about what Mimi had really been up to. He seems relieved. Not even annoyed, just happy that things can settle into whatever the new normal looks like for you and him. You also find time to whisper all the things you want to do to him when there arenโt prying eyes around. It may be cruel, but you delight in the way the blush rises up his cheeks and the way he shifts in his seat. Youโre going to have a lot of fun playing with him, you already know. Heโs so easy to rile up. Now you have brand new material to use on him.ย
Your mother works to corral everyone into the living room where the Christmas tree is so that people can start opening presents. You always hold back and watch at first. Donโt even make an effort to find anything that might be for you. Itโs more fun to see peopleโs reactions. Does your mother like what your father picked out? Are your cousins humoring their parents? Did someone manage to get something thatโs genuinely a surprise? Thereโs never a dull moment. In fact, youโre so lost in thought watching that you don't notice wasnโt beside you until he plops back down and nudges you. Hands a small, beautifully wrapped box over to you.ย
โGo on, open it,โ he urges you softly. Itโs clear heโs trying not to draw too much attention.ย
Exchanging gifts with Mingyu isnโt new. Itโs something you do every year. This is unexpected though. Usually you exchange gifts away from other people because they can be a little silly. Nothing about this feels silly, though. With a final questioning glance at him, you pull the ribbon off and carefully ripping the paper. Itโs immediately clear that itโs a jewelry box. That makes your heart hammer. You canโt even look over at him. Surely this is something he had already. Itโs not like thereโs been any time to go out and get something in the midst of all your confessions.ย
Thereโs a necklace inside the box. Something that looks old, important. The kind of thing you can tell has been well worn and loved without looking cheap. Thereโs a pendant hanging from the chain with your favorite stone in a setting that you instantly love. Itโs the most perfect gift that anyone has ever given you and it makes you a little emotional. You turn to Mingyu, tears welling in your eyes, and want to have the moment just for the two of you. Unfortunately, your mother and several other family members watch your reaction.
โItโs beautiful,โ you say softly.
โDo you like it?โ he asks, still unsure.
โI love it,โ you say earnestly.
โIt was my grandmotherโs that she got from her grandmother before her. She told me to hold onto it and that I would just know when I should give it to someone,โ he says and that does you in. Any last resolve disappears.ย
The only response you can think of is to just kiss him. A real kiss pressed to his lips full of all the words you canโt say about how much a present like this means to you. How sure you are that you two are making the right decision. Itโs so meaningful.ย
โI love you,โ he says quietly, trying to keep it just for the two of you. Which doesnโt happen. Not that it matters. Your parents have heard you saying you loved each other this whole trip. It means something different now, though.
โI love you, too,โ you say back. โSo much.โย
โItโs a beautiful necklace,โ your mother offers as Mingyu helps you to put it on.ย
โI thought it would look good on her,โ he adds to your mother.ย
โAlmost as good as a ring,โ your mother says. Itโs the least subtle comment in the entire world.
Mingyu doesnโt miss a beat. Just smiles and nods a little. โWell, maybe youโll have to invite me back next year and see what the gift is.โย
โYou have a deal.โย
For the first time, youโre not upset with your mother for bringing up marriage and the idea of settling down. Youโre just basking in the affection coming from Mingyu and appreciating your new necklace. Soon, youโll have to leave this little bubble. Trade the idyllic snow covered scenery where everything moves a little slower for your life back in the city. But, youโll be taking a different relationship with Mingyu back. You think that maybe heโll be the key to you finally figuring out how to balance it all. Maybe heโs been the answer all along.ย
โYou didnโt reply for a weekโฆ and I still looked for you first when you came back.โ

The office always smelled like burnt coffee and printer paper by 9 a.m.
You and Mingyu had complained about it together for almost a year now.
It started small. Tiny conversations while waiting for the elevator. Complaining about deadlines, complaining about coworkers who used Comic Sans in presentations like they were made by a 5 year old. Then one day he noticed your lunch.
โIs that homemade tteokbokki?โ
And that was basically the beginning of everything.
After that, lunch became a routine without either of you actually discussing it. Mingyu would appear beside your desk around noon, one hand in his pocket, asking if you wanted to try some new place nearby. Sometimes you brought food from home and shared it across your desks while pretending to work. Sometimes heโd send you pictures at midnight of ramen he made with captions like:
โThis changed my lifeโ or โI think I just invented something illegal.โ
You liked him quietly but not in a dramatic way. Not in a staring at the moon and yearning kind of way.
Justโฆ in the way your day felt easier when he was around.
In the way you always looked for him first when you walked into the office.
And maybe that was why the distance hurt more than it shouldโve.
Because it happened suddenly.
One week, you were sitting shoulder to shoulder in a meeting, whispering complaints to each other while pretending to take notes.
The next morning, Mingyu was avoiding you.
At first you thought he was stressed, then you thought maybe he was sick, or that maybe youโd done something wrong.
But no matter how many times you replayed every interaction in your head, you couldnโt find it.
Still, things had changed.
When the company announced a huge new project, everyone immediately assumed you and Mingyu would work together. You always did. Your teamwork was almost annoying to other people.
Except somehow, he withdrew himself from it.
โI think someone else would fit better,โ Mingyu had told your boss.
And that one stung.
After that, everything slowed down.
Your last message to him was left unanswered for a week.
It was literally just a dumb reel of a cat falling off a kitchen counter followed by:
โThis is you trying to cook lol โ
Nothing.
And somehow that made it worse.
Because it wasnโt important, which meant ignoring you was easy.
Then Mingyu took a week off to LA.
While everyone else carried on with meetings and spreadsheets and emails, you spent every morning staring at his empty desk.
Wondering stupid things.
Whatโs he doing right now? Is he at the beach?
By monday morning, you were already irritated before the day even started and missing your usual bus only made it worse.
You practically dragged yourself into the office ten minutes late, muttering under your breath as you scanned your badge at the entrance.
Then you saw him and somehow you forgot how to breathe correctly. Mingyu was sitting at his desk like heโd never left. Except somehow he looked different.
His skin was golden from the California sun. His black button-up strained slightly against his broad shoulders that you definitely did not remember being that broad before.
What the hell did he do on vacation?
Bench press cars?
His sleeves were rolled up casually, exposing toned forearms while he typed something on his computer.
You hated how attractive he looked under the office lighting.
It wasnโt fair.
Before you could stop yourself, you smiled.
Mingyu didnโt notice.
Or pretended not to.
You sat down at your desk slowly, pretending to organize papers while glancing at him every five seconds.
Say something.
Anything.
Your brain, however, decided to completely malfunction. Since annoyed at yourself, you grabbed a pen and tossed it at him.
It bounced off his shoulder.
Mingyu looked up instantly but he barely reacted. It almost like he was used to it. (Which he was)
His eyes met yours for the first time in over a week.
Gosh.
You forgot how pretty his eyes were.
โSoโฆโ you said trying to casually lean back in your chair. โHow was LA?โ
โNice, I guess.โ
He smiled lightly.
JUST lightly.
Guess his tongue took a vacation too.
โUmโฆ so I heard weโre not working on the new project together.โ You clicked your pen nervously. โWhat a bummer.โ
โYeah,โ he replied quietly. โBut Iโm sure youโll handle it perfectly.โ
Then he looked at you properly.
โI know you.โ
Your stomach flipped so violently it was embarrassing.
You looked away immediately.
โRight,โ you mumbled. โWell. Obviously.โ
Very smooth.
***
The rest of the day felt strange.
Mingyu wasnโt exactly that distant. He still helped you when your printer jammed, still held the elevator for you. And still brought you a coffee without asking because he โaccidentally ordered two.โ
But something was definitely off.
Like he was carefully keeping distance between you.
And the worst part was that you couldnโt stop noticing every single move, every little thing.
Like the way he pushed his glasses up while concentrating. The way he stretched his long legs under his desk. The way his voice sounded rougher after returning from vacation.
It drove you insane.
โ
Tuesday was worse.
Because now you were annoyed.
And hurt.
And confused at the same time.
You found yourself watching him throughout meetings, trying to understand what had changed.
Every time your eyes met, Mingyu looked away first.
Which was new, he used to hold your gaze like it was nothing.
At lunch, he didnโt even ask if you wanted to come with him.
You watched him leave alone and that genuinely pissed you off.
By thursday, you snapped.
Not dramatically, but just enough to try to talk to him.
Your manager asked both of you to retrieve old project files from storage downstairs.
โOf course itโs usโ, you thought to yourself.
The file room was cold and dimly lit, stacked with cabinets and boxes.
You found Mingyu crouched near the bottom drawer searching through folders.
He looked up when you walked in.
โHey.โ
You closed the door behind you harder than necessary but it kind of made you feel good.
โWe need to talk.โ
He immediately froze. His expression shifted into something nervous.
Almost scared.
And suddenly your anger softened a little becauseโฆ Mingyu looked genuinely stressed.
You crossed your arms.
-โWhatโs going on with you?โ
-โWhat?โ
-โDonโt do that.โ
-โDo what?โ
-โThis weird avoiding me thing.โ
-โIโm not avoiding you.โ
-โMingyu.โ
He sighed quietly, so you stepped closer.
-โYou stopped texting me back.โ
-โIt was just a reelโโ
โExactly!โ you interrupted. โIt was a stupid cat video. So why are you acting like I committed a crime?โ
Mingyu stared at the floor.
Silent.
Your frustration melted into concern.
โMingyuโฆโ
His ears turned red. Then he rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly.
โI justโฆโ He exhaled sharply. โI needed space.โ
โWhy?โ
Another silence
Then finally: โBecause I had a dream about you.โ
You blinked.
โโฆWhat?โ
His face became even redder.
โRight before I left for LA.โ
You stared at him.
Of every possible explanation you imagined over the past two weeks, that was nowhere near the list.
Mingyu laughed awkwardly, clearly embarrassed.
โIt sounds stupid now.โ
โNo,โ you said immediately.
He looked away.
โIt wasnโt even that crazy,โ he muttered. โJustโฆ romantic, I guess.โ
Your heart pounded.
โAnd then I couldnโt stop thinking about it.โ
Oh.
โOh.โ
โI tried,โ he continued with a helpless laugh. โI went to the gym like every day, went to the beach, went out with friends. But every time something happened, I kept thinking about you.โ
He finally looked at you again.
โAnd when I came back, seeing you again just made it worse.โ
The room suddenly felt very small.
Very warm.
Mingyu adjusted his glasses nervously.
โI know itโs weird.โ
You stared at him for a long moment.
This entire time you thought maybe he hated you.
You stepped forward and saw Mingyuโs eyes widen slightly.
โYouโre so dumb sometimes,โ you whispered.
Then you kissed him.
He made the softest surprised sound against your mouth before kissing you back instantly.
Like heโd been holding himself back for weeks.
Maybe he had.
Your hands slid into his hair while his gripped your waist hard enough to pull you flush against him.
Gosh.
Youโd imagined kissing him before, but nothing prepared you for this.
For how warm he was, how desperately he kissed you after pretending not to want to.
His glasses bumped your cheek awkwardly and you laughed softly into the kiss before pulling them off carefully.
Mingyu looked devastating without them.
Breathless.
His forehead rested against yours for a second while both of you caught your breath.
Then his eyes slowly dragged downward.
You had worn a fitted top today, because it made you feel good.
His hands tightened slightly at your waist.
โThat shirtโs doing you no favors,โ he murmured.
Your stomach flipped.
Then he looked directly into your eyes.
โTake it off.โ

The music cuts off, but Chan barely registers it at first. His body is still moving as muscle memory carries him through the last counts of the choreography.
The practice room is warm and heavy with the kind of heat that clings to your skin after hours of repetition. Chanโs shirt sticks slightly to his back as he exhales, running a hand through his damp hair. Itโs late, later than he thought, and for a moment he just stands there, catching his breath, trying to push past the exhaustion settling into his limbs.
Hoshi is saying something, probably about running it again, and normally Chan would already be nodding and resetting into position without thinking.
But tonight, something feels off.
He reaches for his water bottle, taking a long sip, when the door opens and Jun steps in, holding something out.
โChan, your phone kept ringing in your bag.โ
Thereโs nothing unusual about that. Not really. But something in the way Jun says it makes Chanโs chest tighten slightly before he even takes the phone.
Then he sees it.
Missed calls.
From you.
More than one.
And a message.
โIโm sickโฆ left work early.โ
His grip tightens around the phone as something sharp and immediate settles in his chest, cutting straight through the fatigue.
Youโre sick and you called him.
More than once.
โHyung, Iโโ he starts, already grabbing his hoodie without finishing the sentence. โI have to go.โ
He doesnโt wait for a response. Doesnโt think about practice, or timing, or anything else. Heโs out the door before it can matter, the only thing left in his mind the image of you alone, not feeling well, and the way you always try to downplay it when itโs bad.
The walk feels too long. The elevator too slow, he checks his phone again like something might have changed in the last minute.
It hasnโt.
By the time he reaches your place, heโs already pushing the door open, breath slightly uneven.
And then he sees you.
Curled up in bed, smaller than usual somehow, surrounded by the quiet mess of a day spent feeling awful. Tissues, a mug, the blanket pulled tight around you.
He stops in the doorway, hands settling on his hips more out of habit than anything else, tilting his head as he looks at you, letting a faint frown settle on his face like heโs annoyed.
Heโs not.
Not really, but you shouldโve told him sooner.
You smile anyway.
And he melts instantly.
The frown disappears before he can hold onto it, his expression softening as he walks over, sitting on the edge of the bed like thereโs nowhere else he could be. His hand finds yours naturally, fingers curling around it as his thumb brushes lightly over your skin.
โBaby, how are you feeling?โ he asks quietly, his voice gentler now, all the edge gone. โI knew it was a bad idea to go to work this morning.โ
You let out a weak laugh, your voice rough around the edges. โYou only said that because you wanted to stay in bed cuddling.โ
A small chuckle escapes him. โMaybe,โ he admits, not even trying to argue, because itโs not entirely untrue.
He reaches down beside him then, grabbing the white plastic bag he brought and placing it carefully in your lap. He didnโt think much while picking things up, just whatever might help, whatever you might need.
โHere.โ
โThank you, babyโฆ youโre the best.โ
He leans in to kiss you without thinking, drawn in by habit, by the simple need to take care of youโbut you stop him, your fingers catching lightly on his collar before he can press the kiss onto your lips.
โI donโt want you to get sick too.โ
He pauses, just for a second because he understands.
But it doesnโt change anything.
His gaze lingers on your face.
โIโm not going to get sick, you silly,โ he says softly, like itโs already decided. Like thereโs no point arguing it.
And before you can say anything-
โJust let me hold you.โ
He shifts onto the bed beside you, pulling the blanket over himself as his arm wraps around your shoulders and the other settling at your waist.
You give in almost immediately. You always do.
Your head rests against his chest, your body relaxing into his like it belongs there, and he adjusts slightly to make you more comfortable.
โโฆyouโre warm,โ you mumble.
He lets out a quiet breath of a laugh, the sound low and steady against you.
โGood,โ he murmurs, tightening his hold just slightly. โThatโs the point.โ

Jisung didn't know how long it had been. He was sitting in a chair beside the hospital bed Minho lay in โ still unconcious.
The paramedics had barged in Minho's room 7 minutes after Jisung had called. He had watched in horror as they tried to find a pulse before they took him in the ambulance and raced to the hospital.
Minho's mother had kept screaming for them to save his boy, clutching onto Jisung for support. When they finally reached the hospital, they had lied that Jisung was Minho's brother so he could go see him.
Jisung wasn't completely sure, but maybe Mrs. Lee had slightly warmed up to him.
He shifted in his seat. His back was aching from sitting in the same position for so long.
When the doctors had finally came to talk to him and Mrs. Lee, Jisung had been so out of it he couldn't even remember all the pills that the doctor listed Minho had taken. Imipramine, amitriptyline, valium... It was all meaningless. All he could remember was that the doctor had told them that his state was critical.
The sound of the door opening startled Jisung out of his thoughts. He looked up to see Minho's mother holding two cups of coffee. up to that moment Jisung had held Minho's hand, but now he quickly snatched it back to his own lap.
Mrs. Lee seemed to notice that and looked at Jisung with an uneasy look. She walked towards the stool beside Jisung, handing him the other mug.
"You look exhausted," She said flatly.
Jisung took the mug quietly, her actions surprising him. All this time at the hospital he had feared for the moment when Mrs. Lee would come to her senses and scream for him to leave his son alone, but instead she had given him the silent treatment, mostly ignoring his presence.
Mrs. Lee sat beside Jisung, staring at his coffee mug. The only thing that could be heard was the slow beeping of the monitors and machines attached to Minho.
"Look," Mrs. Lee started, "When I met Minho's father..." She sighed and smiled slightly. "I was head over heels for him."
Jisung stared at her, confusion written in his eyes.
"There was nothing that I wouldn't have done for him back then." She continued, now staring at her son with tears pricking at her eyes. "What I mean to say is... I- I see that same passion in you..."
Jisung almost fell backwards. What?
"And- and I know that I have been thinking about everything the wrong way, I realize it now," A tear slipped down her cheek.
"I went too far. I- Because of me- my son- Minho went so far to- to do this- and it's all my fault."
Jisung watched in silence as she tried to speak through sobs, unsure of what to do. He hesitantly raised his hand to her shoulder, trying to comfort her.
"I- It's going to be okay."
Mrs. Lee kept sobbing softly, and Jisung watched Minho's expressionless face. He must've felt so trapped.
A tear rolled down his cheek as he fell deep in his thoughts. What would happen after this? Would they continue whatever they had? Would Minho's mother still keep Minho from seeing Jisung? What about his own parents, he hadn't seen them in months.
As Jisung looked at Minho's pale face the memories started flooding his thoughts. The way Minho had been hesitant, scared and confused but over time warmed up to the thought of a relationship with a man. The way he held his hand and the warmth of his skin had spread to Jisung's heart.
The breakfast Minho had made for him.
It was the first sign of the future they could have had together. Jisung working from home, Minho leaving early in the morning but never forgetting to cook for his lover. And once he would come back home he would be greeted by a loving hug.
But the reality had hit them before any of that could become real. Jisung shivered as he remembered the way Minho's mother had dragged him out of the house.
They were both startled out of their thoughts by a gasp that came from Minhoโs hospital bed. Minhoโs mother shot up and yelled for a nurse. Jisung stood up and grabbed the olderโs hand firmly, heart beating faster than ever.
Minhoโs eyelashes fluttered ever so slightly. Jisung choked on a sob as Minhoโs eyes opened slightly. He coughed, eyes widening as his gaze darted around the room.
โWh- where- what- Jisung?โ
His voice croacked as his gaze fixated on Jisung. Mrs. Lee watched from the side, refraining herself from jumping to Minho and embracing him. She owed the boys that much.
Jisung laughed through his tears. โHi, Minhoโ He whispered. Minho looked uneasy. โHow are- what- my momโฆโ
Jisung shook his head slightly. โItโs okay. Everythingโs okay now.โ
Jisung felt Minho tighten his grip on Jisungโs hand right before a nurse came into the room, hushing Jisung further from Minho.
He is alive.
That was all Jisung could think of as he backed away to stand beside Mrs. Lee, letting the nurses check Minho.
Minho is alive.
From somewhere with a radio, flooded Jisungโs ears faintly;
Hi. I'm having such a hard time finding motivation to write rn, so I'm sorry about slow updates, short chapters and bad writing ;(
I haven't planned any further, so I might need to come up with the rest of this fic before actually writing the next chapters. Any wishes? :3 (srsly give me wishes i need help)
Just the feeling of your body finally giving up after you got home: too late and too tired. Your head buzzing from a day that asked for more energy than you actually had. Youโd dropped your bag by the door, showered, and crawled into bed without a word. You didnโt even look at him.
Jun noticed anyway.
You wake up to light first. Bright yet warm morning light shining through the curtains and straight into your eyes. You groan, roll over, and instinctively reach for your phone.
10:07 a.m.
Your stomach drops.
โOh gosh-โ You sit up too fast, heart racing, already mentally preparing apologies and excuses to your boss.
And then you see it.
On the floor, carefully placed beside the bed, is a wooden board. Not a tray because he knows you knock those over half-asleep.
Itโs just a wooden board with breakfast.
Your favorite kind of eggs, cooked exactly the way you like them. Toast cut in triangles, because you once said it tasted better that way. Fruit already peeled and sliced so you wouldnโt have to do anything except eat.
Your mug is still warm, as steam is curling up slowly.
Thereโs a note tucked under the edge of the board.
Junโs handwriting is neat but a little stiff, like he thought too hard about it.
Good morning,
You didnโt come home okay last night.
So I called your boss. I said you were sick, please rest today.
Donโt worry about work, donโt worry about anything.
I ate already and left for practice. Iโll be back in a few hours.
Eat well :)
You stare at the note for too long.
Your chest tightens in that quiet and aching way that comes when someone takes care of you before you even realize you need it.
You didnโt ask.
He didnโt wake you.
And he justโฆ did it.
You sit on the edge of the bed and eat slowly. You take your time, like thereโs no rush for once.
Everything tastes right. Not just good but right. Like he paid attention. He always does.
You spend the day exactly the way your body wants.
You stay in pajamas until the afternoon. You read a few chapters of a book youโve been dragging around for weeks. You nap without guilt. You donโt check your emails even once.
Somewhere between pages and silence, you think:
He always knows before I do.
The front door clicks open in the late afternoon.
You hear the familiar sounds of the keys in the bowl, the soft thud of his bag hitting the floor. He kicks off his shoes and doesnโt even bother straightening them.
His footsteps head straight for you.
โHey,โ Jun says softly, appearing in the doorway. His hair is still slightly damp, sleeves pushed up and eyes tired but gentle.
โHow are you feeling, baby?โ
The way he says it carefullyโฆ like heโs afraid of startling you, does something to your chest.
โBetter,โ you say and you really mean it.
โA lot better.โ
He exhales, shoulders dropping just a little, like heโs been holding that all day. He crosses the room and pulls you into him without hesitation.
His arms are warm and safe.
โIโm so lucky,โ you murmur into his shoulder. โThank you, really.โ
He tightens his hold for half a second, his chin resting against your hair. Then he leans down, mouth close to your ear.
โDid you notice,โ he says quietly, almost shy, โthe special ingredient I added this morning?โ
You smile, pulling back just enough to look at his mouth. โI did. It was really good.โ
His lips curve. Itโs not a big smile. Just that small and satisfied smile he gets when heโs content and proud of himself.
โI wasnโt sure youโd like it,โ he admits.
You think of what you know about him. The trainee days. Mornings when words failed him, when Korean didnโt come easily, when the only way he knew how to care was with his hands, with food and effort.
You hug him again, tighter this time.
โI loved it,โ you say.
โI love you,โ he answers.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
JUNNIEEEEE T-T
honestly I had the idea when i saw a Tiktok about the trainee days when Jun used to make breakfast for the members. After someone requested sweet and gentle relationship with Jun i was like BAM this is it. Cause our Jun doesnโt say much but shows a lot!
The TV show hums quietly in the background, scenes changing without you really following along anymore.
Youโre sitting cross-legged on the couch, tucked into the corner, Seungcheol beside you like he always is familiar and safe.
Too familiar.
So familiar that you sometimes forget that he can still be shaken by the things you say.
On screen, the camera lingers on the male leadโs face. Sharp features and effortless charm. The kind of man made to be admired.
You donโt mean anything by it when you speak.
โWow,โ you say softly. โHeโs really handsome. Likeโฆ he really has everything going for him.โ
The words come easily out your mouth. Thoughtless and harmless.
But the air suddenly shifts.
You donโt look at Seungcheol right away. You donโt need to, to feel it.
To feel the subtle change in his presence, the way his body stiffens discreetly beside you. When you finally glance over, from the corner of your eye, you see his fingers fidgeting.
You see his jaw tightening , relaxing and tightening again. Itโs subtle but itโs there.
He doesnโt say anything.
Did that bother him?
The thought settles in your chest, warm and guilty all at once. You didnโt mean to poke at anything. You werenโt trying to tease him. You were justโฆ talking.
Seconds pass.
โIโve seen him before,โ Seungcheol says eventually. His tone is even, like it doesnโt even matter. โWe worked together once. On a project.
โOh,โ you reply. โI bet heโs nice.โ
โYeah,โ he says. A pause. โI guess.โ
You finally turn your head properly this time. Heโs still watching the screen, eyes forward, shoulders relaxed in a way that feels forced. Like heโs performing being calm instead of actually feeling it.
Something about that makes your lips curve upward.
Then he says it quietly, almost like he doesnโt want the room to hear him.
โYou like me more, though. Right?โ
Your chest tightens, surprised by his question.
He still doesnโt look at you. His eyes stay locked on the TV, pretending this is casual, that this isnโt important. But you know him too well.
You know the way he asks questions when he already knows the answer just because he needs to hear it.
You feel a little thrill when you realise it.
Instead of answering right away, you look back at the screen. Then keeping your voice light, you say:
โYeah. Sure.โ
The silence that follows is heavier than before.
You feel his gaze on you immediately sharp now. When you turn, his brows are drawn together, lips pressed into a thin line.
โYeahโฆ sure?โ he repeats. โWhatโs that supposed to mean?โ
You hold his gaze, amused and aware of how easily you could fix this. You love how much your teasing is working on him.
โI mean,โ you say slowly, โyes.โ
He searches your face like heโs trying to read between your words, like heโs listening for something youโre not saying.
โI donโt know,โ he murmurs.
โWhat do you mean, you donโt know?โ
This time, he finally looks at you fully.
And you see it.
Not anger. Not annoyance.
Just the need for you to say it. Say that heโs all youโve ever wanted.
โTell me,โ he says.
His voice is lower and steadier but somehow still soft. Almost like heโs begging you.
โTell me Iโm the one.โ
Your breath catches.
โTell me Iโm the one you want.โ
You donโt answer immediately. You just smile at him, slow and knowing, because of course you know why this matters. Of course you see the way the admiration from the world will never replace the impact your words have on him.
He shifts closer before you even realize heโs moving, lifting his arm and placing it behind you along the back of the couch.
His body leans in, close enough that you feel his warmth, his presence pressing into your space.
Your heart beats louder.
Your face feels warm and probably red. Right now, youโre grateful for the darkness.
โSay it,โ he murmurs.
You turn towards him fully now, eyes meeting his.
โYouโre the only one I want.โ
The change in him is instant. His shoulders loosen, a breath leaving him like heโs been holding it for far too long.
He just smiles.
โโฆSay it again.โ
You donโt hesitate this time.
โYouโre the only one I want, Seungcheol.โ
His thumb slides under your chin, gentle, lifting your face until thereโs no space to look anywhere else but at him.
His gaze is intense now, dark and warm, like he never really doubted, he just needed the confirmation.
Me too,ย his eyes say. Me too.
Then he kisses you slowly, like thereโs nowhere else he wants to be.
The TV keeps playing but you donโt care anymore.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I saw you guys liked the last scoups post so here it goessss <3
The floor is cold beneath you, but neither of you seems to notice.
Sheets of colored paper are everywhere, along with pens, glitter glue, ribbons, and a big amount of stickers. You sit cross-legged on the rug, carefully folding the edges of a holiday card while Seungcheol leans back against the couch beside you, completely absorbed in his own card.
Heโs quiet. Focused.
His eyebrows are drawn together, lips pushed into that small pout he always gets when he concentrates too hard. Once in a while, he erases a word and rewrites it, muttering under his breath about his spelling. You glance at him when you think he wonโt notice, smiling to yourself.
His cards arenโt bad.
Theyโre justโฆ very Seungcheol.
A little uneven, a little messy but full of effort.
Compared to yours (neatly written and thoughtfully decorated) they could probably be better. You donโt say anything and you never would. You love watching him like this too much.
You finish another card, pressing down a snowflake sticker before adding it to the small pile beside you. You count six cards so far.
Thatโs when he suddenly straightens up.
โTA DAMMMM.โ
He turns towards you, holding up his second card proudly. You look at it, and your smile comes easily.
ยซย Happy Holidaysย ยป is written in english and korean. Thereโs some drawings in the corners: tiny trees, a snowman that leans slightly to one side, a doodle that might be a reindeer if you look from afar. Itโs imperfect, yes, but itโs his.
You laugh softly.
โI love it.โ
Seungcheol watches your expression for a momentโฆ then his gaze drifts to your stack of finished cards.
He sighs, long and dramatic.
โโฆMine looks really bad compared to yours,โ he says, a bit disappointed. He glances at you from the corner of his eye. โAs your partner, youโre supposed to be honest with me. I feel very lied to.โ
You shake your head, still smiling.
โI am being honest. I really love it.โ
He narrows his eyes, then points accusingly at your cards.
โYou even used special stickers. Thatโs cheating. I only had my hands and my raw creativity.โ
He sulks, arms crossed.
You slide closer and hold out your sticker sheet.
โHere. You can use some.โ
He hesitates before carefully placing one sticker on his cardโฆ then another. He leans back to inspect it, lips pushed out.
โโฆIt doesnโt look any better,โ he mutters.
You donโt reply.
Instead, you move closer and gently cup his face while heโs still staring at the card, turning his head towards you. Your thumbs press into his cheeks, puffing them out adorably.
โI love everything you do, silly โ you say softly.
For a moment, he just looks at you, eyes warm, cheeks squished and completely disarmed. Itโs hard to believe this is the same man people find intimidating, the one who can be all sharp edges and authority when he needs to be.
You kiss the tip of his nose.
His lips curve into a smile before he pulls you into a hug, arms wrapping around you tightly. He buries his face against your shoulder, holding you there for longer than necessary.

Youโd been holding your breath for most of the meeting, so when it finally ends, relief washes over you first.
Then comes the disappointment.
Joshua had cancelled an hour ago-work running late again, apologetic messages filled with heart emojis and Iโm so sorryโs. You know itโs not his fault. You really do. His job demands so much of him, and youโve always admired how dedicated he is.
Still, it happens a lot.
You step out of the building, adjusting your bag on your shoulder, wishing (just a little) that heโd been there waiting for you. That you couldโve complained about the meeting over coffee, laughed it off together. Instead, all you have is a driver he sent to pick you up. Itโs his way of trying to make up for it.
The car ride is quiet. You sink into the seat, scrolling mindlessly through your phone as the city blurs past the window. Thatโs when the rain starts.
Soft at first but then heavier.
You sigh.
You used to hate the rain. It always made everything feel heavier, like the sky would bring out your worst moods. Grey days meant staying inside and feeling grumpy for no real reason.
But then you met Joshua.
Rainy days turned into warm waffles shaped like hearts, board games sprawled across the table, his laughter echoing as you accused him of cheating. They turned into long cuddle sessions under thick blankets, his arms always safe around you.
Sometimes heโd pull you outside anyway, running with you through the rain towards the nearest coffee shop, hair soaked but somehow unstoppable. Other times, youโd sit in the car together, fingers intertwined, watching raindrops race down the window like it was the most fascinating thing in the world.
He made rain feel safe and bright. Like something to look forward to.
But today, he isnโt here.
And now, the rain feels lonely again.
About twenty minutes later, the car slows to a stop. You glance up, confused. This definitely isnโt your street. You grab your jacket anyway, leaning forward slightly.
โI think you got the address wrong,โ you tell the driver.
Before he can answer, the door opens.
An umbrella appears first: black and steady against the rain. Then you look up.
Joshua.
Elegant as ever, hair slightly damp, eyes soft and apologetic as he smiles at you from under the umbrella. For a moment, youโre too surprised to move. Then you see his expressionโฆthat faceโฆand you canโt help it.
You smile.
โIโm sorry I couldnโt be there for you today,โ he says gently. โI know you hate the rain. And I know you hate when I cancel plans.โ
Your chest tightens just a little.
He holds out his hand. You take it without thinking, stepping out of the car as he carefully pulls you under the umbrella, making sure not a single drop touches you.
โThatโs why I showed up now,โ he continues with eyes sparkling, โunder the rain, with new plans.โ
His fingers slip between yours, warm and familiar.
He walks you down the street to a small cafรฉ with soft music playing out onto the sidewalk. Itโs the one you talked about a few weeks ago. Youโre not even sure when you mentioned it last but of course, he remembered.
He always does.
As you step inside, rain tapping gently against the windows behind you, you realize something.
You tug your scarf higher, the wool brushing your cheeks as you breathe into the winter night. The restaurant door behind you gives a soft ding each time someone enters, but youโre waiting for one person only.
Jun is still inside paying because technically, he lost the bet.
Well, actually he won the bet but somehow he just ended up paying anyway. You donโt even remember how that happened. With Jun, the line between winning and losing gets blurry really fast.
You always joke around together at work and that will always be the best part of your day, even when work is killing you.
The door opens again, and this time itโs him. He steps out with a hint of pride on his face, before almost walking straight into a menu board.
โAh, I meant to do that,โ he mutters, clearing his throat like he didnโt just stumble. โShall we?โ
You canโt help but to let out a grin. โI mean, you paid for dinner, the least you can do is walk me home. Iโm expecting top-tier service, by the way.โ
He groans dramatically, his hands shoved into the pockets of his jacket. โSee? This is why I shouldnโt make bets with you. I get tricked. Tricked and robbed.โ
โYou offered to pay.โ
โThatโs not the point,โ he protests. โYou- youโre too distracting! You talk too fast and then I talk too fast and suddenly Iโm paying for your dumplingsโฆโ
You laugh, and he tries to glare at you but heโs already smiling, a little crooked and shy.
The two of you walk beneath a starry sky, your footsteps echoing in the silent night. Your hands are buried deep in your pockets. You can feel the cold on your nose, and youโre pretty sure it now looks very red.
Jun has one hand in his pocket tooโฆ but the other still hangs by his side as he keeps twitching his fingers.
You donโt think much of it at first. But it keeps happening a little too much for you not to notice. A little curl of his fingers, then straightening, then curl again like heโs fighting an invisible itch.
Finally, you give up.
โJun?โ
โMhm?โ
โโฆIs something wrong? I mean, with your hand?โ
He freezes, his shoes halting on the pavement. You stop too, breath fogging the air between you. He stares at you like you caught him doing something bad.
โMy-my hand?โ he repeats, as his voice cracks a little.
โYeah. Youโre doing a weird thing with your fingers. Are you cold or something?โ
His lips part.
He swallows.
And in the smallest, clumsiest, most Jun-like motion, he lifts the hand slightly and holds it out towards you.
โI, umโฆโ
He looks everywhere except at you.
โCould youโฆ hold my hand?โ
The world stops for a second.
Your eyes drop to his hand. Warm, open and wanting.
Your heart does something very weird.
โโฆYeah,โ you say softly. โI could.โ
You slide your fingers into his, and he exhales like heโs been holding his breath all night. His hand is warm and a bit sweaty, but it doesnโt bother you. You almost find it cute.
Neither of you speaks as you start walking again, side by side.
But you donโt have to.
Because even in the silence, you can feel it the gentle squeeze, the shy excitement and overall the smile tugging at his lips.
And youโre smiling too.
Warm despite the cold.
All of that because of him.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ahhhhhh this is so wen junhui of him <3
thank you for reading โก hope this warmed your night a little โฆ
Youโre stretched out on the couch, your head resting comfortably on Jeonghanโs lap. His fingers play lazily with the ends of your hair while the TV flickers softly in the dim room.
A cultural quiz show comes on, itโs one of those programs where people prove theyโre geniuses by answering cultural knowledge questions.
You usually skip these kind of things, but tonight you feel like giving it a try.
โLetโs play along,โ you say tilting your head just enough to catch his eye.
โLetโs see who wins between me and you.โ
Jeonghan gives you that gentle, angelic smile that absolutely that would make you fall for everything he says.
โOkay,โ he says innocently.
The first question comes up. Jeonghan answers instantly and surprisingly, heโs right.
Second question: also right.
Third: right again.
Fourth: still right.
You sit up slightly, narrowing your eyes.
โOkay, wait.โ You pause the TV almost dramatically. โThere is no way you know all of this. Something is definitely weird.โ
Jeonghan blinks at you, before opening his mouth as he is trying to say something. Then a smile spreads on his lips, sweet and definitely guilty.
โโฆI watched this program yesterday,โ he finally admits.
Your jaw drops. โThatโs cheating! Jeonghan, you literally cheated!โ
Jeonghan looks at you almost enjoying your reaction.
You lay back down on his lap but the feeling of betrayal is too strong. You know you can be a little competitive sometimes.
You switch the channel aggressively, crossing your arms in full grumpy mode. He stays silent. You stay silent. No one moves for at least five whole minutes.
Then suddenly, he takes a chunk of your hair and flips it right over your eyes.
You blink behind all of the hair, trying to get it out of your face. โWhat the-? What was that for? โ
You push your hair away, staring up at him and waiting for an explanation.
But there he is, leaning over you, his face above yours, eyes sparkling like heโs amused. His smile is unfairly pretty, his cheeks soft and he just looks so warm.
โYou look really cute when youโre mad,โ he says, voice soft but teasing. His comment feels so sincere in that Jeonghan way that makes you melt.
โWell, I wonder why Iโm madโฆโ you mutter, though your irritation is already slipping away.
He laughs. Its sound feels so warm. Itโs the kind of sound that settles right in your chest. He looks at you for a moment,eyes gentle and filled with affection.
โIโm sorry,โ he murmurs.
Then he leans down and presses a soft kiss on the tip of your nose.
You smile.
And just like that, any leftover anger just dissolves completely. Youโre not even mad anymore. How could you be? Not when heโs being this sweet, this gentle, this Jeonghan.
You just feel warm and safe, like everything about this moment is exactly where itโs meant to be.
