could there be a feeling of sadness in her? sad their once dance of lingering eyes over the water was now over, the mystery of the others many things slowly disappearing. for one she hadnât realized he was a smoker, not that she was going to complain it was his choice. âi walk almost everywhere.â she stated, hands adjusting the strap on her shoulder with the energy her heart begun to produce. was she nervous? it wasnât totally nerves of fear - sure afraid of the darkness around them, the idea perhaps she wasnât living up to the great story he might have come up with for her in his mind⌠also nerves from excitement - she hadnât felt them in so long it was hard to describe. âis this your â other spot?â she questioned, glancing to the place heâd originally been sitting.Â
x
âItâs a small place... Trulia told me it has a great walking score.â How fucking lame, Elliott. Who the fuck said that as a talking point? Him apparently. Elliott was wondering when he became the hipster dad, but apparently age and shock do crazy things. Not that he wasnât happy to have her so close after so long, but it wasnât expected. âOh, no, well, yes, I was out of smokes and yâknow... Nasty habits.â He lets out a nervous laugh, but this nasty habit replaced other nasty habits, but no one needed to have that conversation. However, he hoped it was a deterrent, normally he was seen running or looking more like what he assumed a productive member of society looked like. âSorry, Iâm not tryinâ to keep you, if you wanna be on your way?â But heâd keep her company if she wanted, hell, heâd follow her back out to the lake if she asked. But that was desperate, and he wasnât prepared to say that.Â
she was more than thankful she wasnât on social media, unable to imagine what people must be saying online considering all the things they are willing to say out loud. since they found jade all sheâs heard is whispers of something coming worse, why would anyone want to sit and sallow on the things in life? she was heading to the market - the reusable bags being dug out of her back when the voice cut the silence and soft breeze. leia glanced up, a little smile tugging on her lips. âhello.â responding in almost a playful way though it was soft unlike his âhowdyâ.
x
Recognition crosses his face, expression changing from suspicious to soft, eyes widening a bit as he came face to face with his current favorite stranger. Elliott is quick to billow the next plume of smoke falling from his lips away from her, not wanting to offend the woman heâd only seen across the water. âDecided to walk somewhere else today, huh?â He asks, trying to keep his own tone soft and voice hushed, afraid to draw attention now that they were actually within feet of each other. God forbid they both die upon finally meeting.Â

He didnât want to be a diva, he didnât. That behavior went against everything he believed in, every ideal heâd based his whole life and career on. But now he was going on a week without any pain meds, without anything injectables, blood clearing from anything but nicotine and holy shit was he losing it. Which brings him to his current critical meltdown; why is the Pepsi always flat. Did no one know how to change it out? Shit heâd go do it himself if it meant heâd get that sweet relief of a sugar rush. Instead, he stews, sipping on the seemingly flat soda until he canât take it anymore. âCan I ask you somethinâ? Will you, will you taste this for me and tell me if itâs flat or not?â He asks, reaching across the bar and grabbing a straw for Julia.Â
Danny meant what he said that he wasnât going to live his life in fear, just because there was a killer on the loose. So Danny didnât think much of it when he realized he ran out of gas and his car stuttered to a spot a few hundred feet from the gas station. After a mild fit of rage, he slammed the car door and began to trudge the rest of the way to Fast Gas. . His hands were in his pocket as he neared the station and only lifted his head when someone greeted him. âHey,â Danny returned the greeting, waiting to see if he knew the man once he was closer. He didnt. âRan out of gas back there.â He explained, though he didnât need to but everyone was on edge. âYou mind?â Danny asked before taking a seat next to the other on the ledge. He scratched at his chin. âIâm debating how much I need a car or if I just leave it back there.â It was a dumb joke, Danny needed his car but it was the last thing he wanted to deal with right now. âMind if I bum a smoke?âÂ
x
âNot at all, my friend.â He drawled out, shaking his head, scooting over to make room for his new found company on the skinny ledge. âThatâs unfortunate, though, I donât know if this place has gas cans, barely had any smokes stocked.â It might not seem like a big deal, but the gas station was a life line some nights, so it was pretty unfortunate right now, especially in Dannyâs time of need. Elliott lets out a low chuckle, giving a thoughtful nod at the idea of not owning a car. âI feel like around here you donât really need one? Most things are close enough unless youâre tryinâ to get out to the farms.â He muses, shaking his head at Dannyâs request and sliding the carton and lighter his way. âHelp yourself.â He exhales, smoke releasing from his lungs, pausing for another moment before speaking again. âBe cool if this place had a bus system, though, that would probably be super helpful for a lot of folk.â
ânow that really depends on the strength of it.â she had seen an EF 5 tornado up close. it was as destructive as one had described it. âwhen i say you wouldnât want a tornado hitting the town, iâm serious.â even if they hated the town, it would ruin everything for everyone. all of ones belongings, destroyed in a blink of an eye. and also leaving someone without a home too. âiâve seen first hand the destruction a tornado leaves behind and itâsâŚ..mind blowing. that was the day i became interested in weather too.â she had been young at the time it had happened. sixteen years old she had been.  feeling the raindrops, she looked up for a moment before looking over at him. âthink we should stay out here in the rain, or go somewhere where we wonât get soaked?â
x
Elliott listens as she speaks, finding an odd comfort in the thought of the destruction. What better way to start everything over? Maybe take that psycho out with it. âYeah? Were you far away or were you hiding in a basement?â He asked, genuinely curious. Heâd never taken part in natural disasters, not since Katrina, and heâd been lucky enough to survive with only the lingering taste of salt water on his tongue. Part of him wants to stay and talk to her, their own little corner of the city, blanketed and hidden by the bad weather, but if it does turn ugly, they might want to be closer to shelter. âWe can go somewhere, it might downpour if weâre lucky.â
âyou usually call people kid when youâre old enough to be their parent and i would say â gross if you were my parent, youâre way too much like an older brother.â she shudder, adding a bit of dramatics to her words. phoebe wished she could be strong like elliot, try to ignore the things going on and in truth - if jade simply passed and life continued on it would be one thing - but even if someone was taking advantage of the horrible situation, they were getting something out of it. they had to have some piece to play. âi love the attitude, perhaps you should run for town talker - i mean pep-talkers, you could get people really motivated.â
x
âWell then itâs still fitting, call my sisters kid all the time.â When they spoke, he should add on, but he keeps that to himself. No one wants to get into the depressing history of the Love family dynamics. Elliott actually laughs at the idea she tosses across to him, shaking his head a bit and playing a couple keys on the piano. âOh yeah, Iâd be an excellent mouth piece, probably end up spewing whatever garbage the police or government decides is fact.â He snorts at the concept, shaking his head a bit before turning back to Phoebe. That was probably a little bitter, but he didnât feel like he was wrong. âI promise, nothingâs gonna get anyone else here. People are on high alert, it would be stupid to do anything right now.â
âthatâs how it was, like, every sunday when weâd go to my grandmas, makes sense.â every sunday after church, if her dad was there or not, sofia would make it to her grandmaâs house and fill herself up with conchas. it was a sense of love and support, something that she didnât receive that much at home. âi get it, if i could bake iâd do the same..â she noted before breaking off a piece of the bread and taking a small bite, âthank you.â
x
He hums in response to her own memory of gathering around the dinner table, scrounging for any sense of love or support. He supposed his was different, after all, he didnât know Sofia well, but he knew she wasnât Old Money. Not like his family, but the sentiment of yearning for comfort was all the same. âOf course. Food is love, right?â He muses, cutting himself a piece and taking it in. A little too much banana, definitely a little doughy, but it wasnât horrid. At least, not in his humble opinion, being a connoisseur of gas station burritos. âHow are you holding up, though?â

SHIT IâM S A D
A playlist cranked up to 12 in Elliottâs apartment.Â
You can also catch him singing these as covers during his set or during soundcheck at The Cadillac.
open starter: @hidehillstartâ location: Outside Fast Gas
The pack of smokes makes a thud against his wrist and echoes into the night. He pulls one from the carton and lights it up, inhaling deeply and looking off into the quiet of the night. And it was quiet. If he was being honest, Elliott couldnât think of anything he hated more than silence, but this town seemed to envelope him in it even prior to the vigil. Though, he assumed, the quiet was part of the reason for sending him here, out of the limelight and into more tradition. What a joke. He laughs at the thought, taking in another drag as he sits on the brick window ledge, gaze going over to a silhouette emerging from the dark street. Weird town. But every podcast heâs listened to says youâre less likely to die if you greet someone, so thatâs what he does. âHowdy, howdy.â
after the vigil all sofia wanted to do was escape. escape the town, escape from her head, escape from everything around her. normally, she probably wouldâve slipped into a vice, head into work, and just shut everything out for a few days. this though? she couldnât tune out. sitting at the table with her head in her hand, the girl was quick to space out, his voice bringing her back with the smell of banana bread. âbetter than i could do..â she offered before shifting in her seat, knowing she wasnât going to eat anything. âsince when can you bake?â
x
Food had been a center piece during his life, it was probably the only thing that brought his family together and it was all he could think to offer right now. Even if it was probably doughy in the middle and a little burned on the bottom. âSince... Today apparently.â Elliott shrugged, turning off the oven and getting down a couple small plates. âMy Grans used to make us treats and it, yâknow, didnât fix anything but it was indeed a comfort.â He shrugged. âFigured it was worth a shot given recent events.â
âI highly doubt you could help me.â Amelia retorted without missing a beat and lifted her head, eyes zoning in on the pizza. It took her a second to refocus âThis is all just⌠itâsâŚâ She struggled for the words. âEs que todo esta de la mierda!â Amelia said exasperatedly because it seemed that her native tongue was the only place she could find words right now. âAnd I canât help the people I love the most.â That was her purpose in this life and she was doing a shit job at it right now. Amelia rubbed her face. She was tired and hungry. âWhoever this killer is a pinche cabron and the police are tontamente inĂştilâ She signed and leaned back in the booth. âBut if you can help me with any of that, Iâll take it.â
x
Elliott knew enough of those words, having had them tossed his way once or ten times by ex lovers, to know they werenât good. Right now, his brain couldnât connect the dots well enough to find the translation, but he could def see the dots, so he just nodded at her response. âSo... I canât help with that, but I can...â Eyes go off to the corner, lips pressing together as he fought for something he could offer her in a time of crisis. âI can buy you a drink or... I mean,â He leans in to whisper. âThe Devils Lettuce, if thatâll help ease any of the stress.â

âcalling me kid now? oh you hurt me - weâre not that far in age.â she teased gently but her heart was pounding too fast for her to be able to focus wanting to go on stage, phoebe kept thinking to her sister. percy needed her more than she needed this, but her gaze lingered over to elliot offering a small smile. âiâm not really feeling a run through if i can be honest elli, i⌠i mean arenât you feeling off at all with everything happening?â she didnât honestly care much for the jade end but her family was a different story, daring to voice that though was certainly asking for more trouble.
x
âIâm literally a decade older than you.â He poked back, giving her a gentle smile in return. Elliott nodded at her honesty, swallowing hard as he chose his words carefully. âI think what happened to Jade was awful. And I feel very sorry for those closest to her and her loved ones.â He started, trying his best not to sound insensitive. âBut I also think someone is taking advantage of the situation, maybe using it to try and blackmail or defame others and I personally donât think whoever this Shadow person is should be getting any attention... So... Iâm not going to give it my time or energy.â

Lucia couldnât make head or tails of the situation. She didnât want to acknowledge the possibility that her grandparents stories were turning into her new reality. Looking back at her phone screen, she reread the messages The Shadow had sent - clinging to their every word. They now held the clue to unravel the mystery that the town was being shrouded upon. Without looking up, she addressed the nearest person. âDo you think itâs true?â She asked hoping they could shed some light on this tragedy. âThat her death couldâve been prevented so easily? Has the police truly been aware of the threats all along?â Her blood ran cold at the thought that it couldâve been her sister in that casket. âAre they really back?â
x
Truthfully, Elliott had gone mostly out of respect for Jade and those closest to her. He didnât really know her, only a hand full of nights or weekends spent buying shots or talking about music and art, but nothing other than surface level conversation. In his opinion, this all seemed a little too small town, youâd never see this in the city, but he figured small town folk got bored. âWhat do you mean back?â He asks, looking down at Lucia. She was the first familiar face he saw and clung onto her so he didnât stick out so much.Â
