hiccup in the "Anko's curse seal" timeline placement: she'd almost certainly have to report that something had been done to it and she wasn't in pain any more, right? If the seal is still there, and they didn't know about the Orochimaru-bits before, T&I could come to the conclusion that nothing had actually changed, and it was psycho-somatic or something. But that feels like a stretch, honestly; surely someone would entertain the thought that this wasn't just imaginary friends, right?
Hm, to be fair, it could be that since it was a "prototype" curse seal, people could have just assumed that it was temporary/meant to break down over time/her own chakra system burned through it. At this time, there are no sealing masters in Konoha, so who can say for sure, lol.
There's also the fact that Anko's seal seems like a far better kept secret than, say, Naruto's for example. People avoid her because she was Orochimaru's student, not because of the curse seal from him, if that differentiation makes any sense.
Also, considering the other "seals put on people against their will" are the Hyuuga clan elders and Danzo, I can't imagine they'd want people looking into how Anko got rid of Orochimaru's seal. Any influence they have would be put towards making sure it's swept under the rug: either dismissing her explanation as "childish nonsense" or pulling the "Orochimaru is unstable and so are his seals" type of thing.
Specifically, I'm thinking that T&I is either still-Inoichi, or he's in his "I'm retired, you shouldn't be bringing me this" phase already. Either way, Anko would almost certainly report the change, which would get to Inoichi, whose daughter and best friend/teammate's daughter both believe in the "imaginary friend".
I'm thinking much less about Joe Intelligence thinking something about it, and more about Shikaku thinking something about it.

Sephiroth feels a little better after an evening of meditation and a full night of sleep. Things look a little better in the light of day, and though the question of what the fuck he'd going to do about the war is still there, it has been put off. In favour of monster hunting!
"You seem⦠excited?" Angeal comments as they prepare to go.
He is! "Mn," Sephiroth answers, and carefully doesn't bounce with eagerness.
Even if the monsters of Final Fantasy can't hold a candle to the convoluted, messy and lazily put together nature of the monsters in PIDW, they're still interesting! Especially since he isn't sure what they actually are and how they work. Advent Children and Crisis Core really make it so unclear, because, like, everything turned into energy sparkles when it died? And he thinks in the movie one of the Sephiroth copies - weird to think about them now - summoned some monsters with magic? And then there was Zack in Crisis Core. Who turned into sparkles when he died!
Not everything can just disappear into energy, right, you need living things dying and rotting and composting to make up soil and stuff! If plants just disappear when they die, what do people eat, what were all these buildings made from? Plus he distinctly remembers coal being a thing in this setting, there was a whole town that got shafted because of it and everything, so fossil fuels exist, therefore stuff must leave behind physical remains! Except when it doesn't?
So! Is death like instant ascending here? Or like it descending, since all energy returns to the Planet? Sephiroth is pretty sure that Aerith left behind a body, and there were definitely corpses in the original game - but again, in the prequel it was really unclear. Enemies in combat disappeared, but cutscene death left a body. Except when it didn't!
Ah, the limitations of technology.
Still, he's interested in seeing how the creatures would look and feel and compare them to those he knows from PIDW. Final Fantasy VII had some really weird monsters, and he has a bet going with himself about how much they resemble awakened beasts or yaoguai.Ā
Angeal looks at him and then smiles, hoisting the Buster Sword to his back. "Ready to go, then?"
"Ready," Sephiroth agrees.
"We're going to have to talk to the Colonel first, but don't worry - I'll handle the talking," Angeal says. "He's an⦠old-fashioned soldier."Ā
Sephiroth arches a brow. It sounds like a warning. "Which means"
"He doesn't like SOLDIER, he thinks we're stuck up and get our abilities handed to us, we don't deserve our reputation, the usual stuff," Angeal shrugs. "Just ignore it and let me handle it."
"... If you say so."
They head outside together, and Sephiroth takes a moment to look around and try to be an objective observer. This place isn't really anything like the towns back home, in PIDW - the aesthetics are mixed, and though they're more like home than Midgar was, it's as if the place was squeezed through a funhouse mirror. It's just a little off.
And of course, there are no locals anywhere to be seen for a full comparison - just Shinra troops, infantry men and SOLDIERs. Who, the moment they notice him and Angeal, stop to stare and point and whisper.
Has the⦠incident in Midgar already spread this far, or is this really what it's like being Sephiroth all the time?
Depressing.
"Here," Angeal says and leads him to another house, apparently being used by the Colonel. "Remember, let me do the talking. You just stand there and look imposing, okay?"
Sephiroth snorts. "I think I can manage that."
The Colonel didn't look happy to see them, but then, he doesn't look like a man that's ever really happy. He sizes Sephiroth up and then scoffs. "It's about time. I don't know what kind of discipline you SOLDIER Firsts enjoy in Midgar, but this is a war front, sir, there are rules here."
Does that mean Sephiroth isn't a General then?Ā
"Right, you're right, of course, sir," Angeal says placatingly. "Well, we're here now, and we already have missions lined up, so -"
The Colonel ignores him and comes around his desk and to Sephiroth's face. "You've been in and out of Wutai for most of this war, isn't that correct, SOLDIER?"
Sephiroth blinks at the man, slowly. "I suppose so." Behind the Colonel Angeal looks panicked.
"What was that?" The Colonel asks dangerously, narrowing his eyes. "You suppose so?"
Sephiroth narrows his eyes back.
The Colonel continues. "When talking to an officer of superior rank, you answer yes sir, or no sir. You do not suppose! Now, do you have experience in the war or not, SOLDIER?!"
Oh, someone is feeling very insecure in their boots, aren't they?
Now, Sephiroth could handle this with all the tact and delicacy of Shen Qingqiu⦠but even Shen Qingqiu wouldn't have swallowed that kind of spiel without biting. The original definitely wouldn't have! And Sephiroth is supposed to be a villain⦠well.
Sephiroth smiles - the Colonel recoils.
Last night he'd reread everything there was on his phone about Wutai, going through all his missions again, trying to get as much intelligence as he could. Funny, the things the tutorial left out.Ā
"I'm sorry," Sephiroth says sweetly. "Who are you?"
The Colonel goes a little red. "Excuse me, SOLDIER?"
"You're barking at me as though at a private, expecting me to go yes sir and no sir," Sephiroth says mockingly. "And yet I have no clue as to who you even are."
Behind the Colonel Angeal gapes and then lifts a pleading look to the ceiling.
The Colonel sputters. "You, you - How dare -"
Ah, you gotta love zero IQ bullies.
"I was given a whole slew of missions and orders," Sephiroth says softly. "All are very vital and high priority. I'm to slay monsters that have killed your men, I'm to hunt down spies you've clearly failed to find, I'm to clear a guard station you haven't been able to get near, I'm to weaken a fortress you cannot even touch, and ten other things besides. All my mission files are very clear. And you know what they all have in common?"
He leans a little closer to the Colonel - right in his purple face. "Not a single one of them mentions you."
Then, before the Colonel can recover, Sephiroth turns on his heel with an imaginary mike drop and saunters out, feeling a whole lot better about everything. The sun is shining, the troopers are scattering at the mere sight of him, and the air is fresh and sweet with natural Qi.
Already this day is looking up.
Angeal, clearly deciding that evasion was the better part of valour, hurries after him. "We're going to pay for that later, you know," he says, sounding defeated.
Of that Sephiroth doesn't have any doubts. What good is a one-time bully? There'd either be a horrifying scene of comeuppance to bring home the realities of war, or a heartfelt discovery and understanding about how they're not so different after all, or whatever else.Ā
"We'll burn that bridge when we get to it," Sephiroth says cheerfully. "Now. I was promised monsters."
Angeal sighs, glancing back at the house commandeered by the Colonel. "... I guess we better clear out anyway. Alright," he motions. "Right this way to the monsters."
Sephiroth grins at his bitchy tone, and together they head out.
Hey, guess who's got a pair of songs for you? I heard "Cant Stand the Rain" by The Rescues ages ago, and just recently heard "Rain" by grandson & Jessie Reyez. The moment song 2 hit my ears I was like, "These have to be smashed together, somehow." And since I once sent you that prompt for "Thunder and Lightning" and "Thunder", I thought of you. <3
!!!!! <3<3<3<3 Hello, loveelemental!
Okay, after checking out these songs and their lyrics, I just want to say that none of the following is a value judgementāI do like both of these songs that youāve brought to meābut the POV/personalities of these songs are VERY⦠hmā¦
Youāve brought to me two songs that are in a dialogue with each other and, on the surface, could appear to be in opposition with each other. BUT, I do think theyāre both rather⦠cynical in a sense, so theyāre not truly opposite ends of a spectrum.
Because, okay, Canāt Stand the Rain is very cynical, post-relationship, everything is bad and I hate it and why should I do anything to change it? āMy blackened heart,ā āIād empty [the pots and pans filling with rainwater] out but why?ā even the repeating āLove, no such thing as love,ā FEELS very āI just got broken up with and Iām going to wallow in my own sadnessā not even necessarily āI miss/still love the person I broke up withā but a very selfish, cynical āthe world sucks so now Iām going to be miserable.ā
Which is certainly one way to handle a break up.
Another way is in Rain, the difference most embodied by āI donāt mind the rain sometimes.ā Emphasis on the SOMETIMES. And while the person in this song is slightly less cynicalāin that crying/rain is what makes roses bloom and that āitās better to have loved and lostā¦ā although it doesnāt include the rest of the saying which IS IMPORTANT āthan to never have loved at all.ā
This person ALSO is wallowing in their own sadness post-relationship but almost⦠reveling in it? Very emo. A+ Theyāre literally āmaking peace with the rainā and ādancing with the pain,ā and turning the break up/end of the relationship into a learning opportunity of sorts? Itās not AS cynical but it IS as selfish⦠or maybe self-centeredā¦
I think what Iām trying to articulate is that both of these songs represent people who are HURT by a break up/end of a relationship, but not necessarily HEARTBROKEN if that clarifies anything at all⦠Because thereās no YEARNING either for their former partners or even for the relationship itself. Itās just⦠here is the new normal, how do I react to it.
Now to step away from song analysis, into potential fic writing.
Immediately I can think of two ways to go with this:
The two POVs of the songs are the two people in the relationship that ended and this is how each of them deal with it. Or,
This is the same person after some time has passed.
Iāll be honest, both of them are kind of funny.
Because with (1) it just really shows how, probably, it was the best for the relationship to end considering how selfish the lyrics are on both sides. Rain is slightly more romantic in the sense that itās ābecause of this break up I can grow as a personā but itās still pretty selfish, lol. Like⦠both of them are stewing in their own misery and meanwhile their respective friend groups (if they have them) are just like, āOh thank god, theyāve broken up.ā
With (2) the less time passing, the funnier it gets. Going from Canāt Stand the Rain into Rain after a week is funny, but after a day? Thatās hilarious⦠I guess you can go in the other direction and it would also be funnyāRain into Canāt Stand the Rain, that isābut regardless the shorter the time jump the better.
I suppose there is option 3) in which these are two people who were in two different relationships and then the fic could be about them learning to be less selfish in love with each other? Or maybe being in love with someone who is as selfish as you and being okay with it? I donāt know.
⦠Iām trying to think if thereās a pairing for (1) or a character for (2) that would work but I donāt really do comedy, much less this anti-romantic comedy, so the I donāt know if my go to characters really match the genre. Although there is something to be said about how my reluctance to cast anyone into these roles speaks more about me wanting my characters to not be this kind of selfish/self-centered which isnāt accurate to real life. I should probably have more selfish/self-centered character to play around with. Or, rather, I should realize that some of the characters I write DO have the capacity to be this way, I have just been softening/glorifying them without exploring their full personalities.
Then again, I also donāt really write relationships as the main focus? Like, even my shipping fic is more of a method to explore various AUs or themes that arenāt necessarily romance based. Even Dreaming of S(omething,) my ShikakoxGaara series, and which I consider to have some of my most romantic writing in it, is more about how home can change from one place to another, or to a person. How a different environment can reveal as much about yourself as it does the new place youāre in. Even Dreaming of S(elfishness) doesnāt even have them being that selfish and has less to do with jealousy over an engagement and more about, like, establishing clearly what you want rather than just letting something passively come to you and passively watch it go.
Although⦠while I donāt write much in the (anti-) romantic genre that often, I do LOVE reading about, hm, estranged exes reuniting and having to hash out the mistakes from their past and bittersweetly getting closure before maybe giving the relationship another chance or starting a new relationship knowing the follies of their younger selves. But these songs feel freshly out of the relationship, whereas my preference for estranged exes reuniting usually has the benefit of years (if not decades, I do love when itās like⦠ex high school sweethearts meeting up as full grown adults) in between the break up and the reunion.
If these songs are the initial response to the break up and part of the aforementioned youthful follies, then⦠okay. So Iām still kind of in Omniscient Readerās Viewpoint headspace, and while I MOST love Yoo Joonghyuk x Kim Dokja estranged high school exes reuniting, the dichotomy of these two songs FEELS more like what Han Sooyoung and Yoo Sangah would throw at each other in a fight.
Like, Canāt Stand the Rain feels like Han Sooyoungās response to the break upāan almost destructive, heedless miseryāwhereas Rain would represent Yoo Sangahās external perfection versus her internal flaws. Like the argument would contain:
YSA: At least I didnāt go around making my misery everyone elseās problem.
HSY: Oh, as if youāre any better Miss Every Experience Is A Learning Opportunity, bullshit!
Like, I donāt know the whole argument, but thatās the vibe Iām feelingā¦
Surely thereās another couple that embodies this dynamic in my usual fandoms, but I am STRUGGLING to think of them for nowā¦
And then, unfortunately, as I was writing this, I realized (2) was pretty much just 500 Days of Summer so⦠¯_(ć)_/ĀÆ
Probably not what you were looking for, loveelemental, but I appreciate you reaching out :D
This is going to sound weird, but even thought it is DoS canon, my brain struggles to hold that pairing in my mind. Like. I KNOW it's DoS canon and it's a pretty strong undercurrent during the Sealing Arc and it DOES make sense, but brain just does not hold.
It's also maybe because ShikamaruxTemari is so prevalent in my heart of hearts? Practically formative. Embarrassingly, there were AMVs involved.
ANYWAY!!!
I definitely see the Tenten as Rain in the sense that SO much of her character is, sadly enough, about rolling with the punches life throws at her (orphan, no clan, poor chakra control, can't become a medic like Tsunade, etc) and just hard pivoting into her strengths. But also, part of me wonders if the song is a little too... emo sad girl? Tenten seems a little too practical for this kind of reveling in the breakup?
If anything, the most extreme flawed version of post-breakup Tenten would be a sort of... Elizabeth Bennet style "what did I expect from the heir to a big clan?" with her blaming their disparate statuses. Never mind the fact that Shikaku and Yoshino basically did the same thing a generation earlier and the Nara clan have been so scandalized by whatever Shikako does every other week that no one really cares about who Shikamaru dates (... I mean, until he starts dating a Sand nin, lol)
As for Shikamaru... I definitely see what you mean about wallowing vs growing and of the two he is more Can't Stand the Rain than Tenten for sure... it seems like it'd be a very short window of time post break up when he'd be in the Can't Stand the Rain mode. After that he'd shift into a... not denial, but an almost excessive "out of sight out of mind" type thing.
My brain did several jumps just now and I'm fully tangent-ing for sure, but do you think there are some Yamanaka who have tried--whether successfully or not--to do an Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind type of business? Like, on the one hand, that seems EXTREMELY DANGEROUS both for the "clients" and the Yamanaka "technician." But on the other hand... I dunno... it could be a lucrative business.
And now I'm imagining an Inception AU with the Kunoichi Club (ā„Ļā„*)

Dona posted a thing on the forums (almost four years ago now, jesus) titled "Hard to Disprove a Negative", post #146476786 under Recursive, which concludes with the children coming to the consensus that 1. Naruto is a Secret Yamanaka and 2. The Uchiha are Vampires. And it's a bit hilarious, but also a bit sad, because I could definitely see Danzo capitalizing on that second one, somehow. And I'd like to know what you make of it?
So unfortunately I canāt find that post because I also need the page number as well as the post number in order to get to a specific post, but I do remember reading that ficletāor, at least, I definitely remember theĀ āNaruto is a Secret/Bastard Yamanakaā part but I donāt really remember theĀ āUchiha are Vampiresā bitā¦
I donāt know if Danzo is so well connected that he hears childish rumors/tales and I donāt know if he⦠hm⦠part of what makes him such a terrible person is that he barely acknowledges things/people who he considers below him so unlike Orochimaru who can find use in even Mizuki, I doubt Danzo would find use in that. Like. The dude barely considers healing a necessary skill when, considering his whole organization is supposed to be a secret, would greatly prolong the lifespans of his soldiers so he wouldnāt have to risk as many recruitments and waste so much time training new recruits, etc. etc.
That being said, the closest thing to canonical vampires/a vampire-like ability is, Iām pretty sure, Hidanās jutsu that allows him to reflect injuries onto someone whose blood heās consumed. Given Jashinās monks during the Land of Hot Springs arc were going incognito until their big plan, I think Hidanās probably the only big⦠evangelist?⦠of Jashin.
BUT, if people DO still remember Jashin and how terribad his followers were, I can see Danzo insinuating thatāin a similar veināthe Uchiha worship gods of destruction and their part in the Kyuubi Attack was a similar offering to bring about the apocalypse?
I mean⦠thatās kinda what happens with Kaguya, right?
Page 100 of recursive fanfiction--had to track it down right quick, here's a hyperlink:
Hard to Disprove a Negative
Honestly, given that run-down of Danzo's character, I wouldn't really even put it past him to sacrifice people to Jashin for power. I wonder what stops him? Ignorance? The desire not to be a follower of anything, even a god? Hm

So this is a bit more out there, but I was reading the Florist/Tattoo Artist Ino/Kako/Sai stuff, and I thought about the movie Miss Hokusai, and about a fanfic of it called "Paint Heaven and Anger the Gods" by shanastoryteller. I don't really expect you to know either of those stories (they're quite good), but the long-and-short of it is that they frame the creation of art very mystically. And PHaAtG draws a line between Beauty, Power, and Truth. What IS and what SHOULD BE, as well.
So first off, based on the trailer Miss Hokusai looks super dope. I know of shanastorytellerāor, at least, an author by that name on ao3 (I am fond of their Teen Wolf fic)ābut i donāt see the fic you mentioned there?
Over all this has such powerful ART!!!! vibesā
āthat there is no way not to think of it as a Sai centric/focused concept. And what with fuinjutsu and Shikako being about (will)power manifesting in ink strokes sheās not too far behind.
And Iām not saying that Inoās brand of Beauty and Truth donāt apply to this, but itās not as clear a match or, at least, not in such a way that her side of the trio has the same weight looking through the lens of what little I understood Miss Hokusai to be about from the trailer.
ALTHOUGH, the fact that Japanese tattoos in the Edo period used something calledĀ āNara inkāĀ and that most tattoo artists were traditionally male could make for an interesting AU of the original florist/tattoo artist AU. Iām unsure how, but it would be cool.
One place where I really think Sai works for exploring what comes through in Miss Hokusai is that a lot of her problems come from (in the film) a lack of certain experiences, and with Sai the trouble with finding that experience becomes obvious.
I think in canon!Naruto or in DoS, the story might revolve around how finding that experience so that his skills improve and he becomes more versatile cleaves him away from Danzoāwho, really, relies on his agents not interacting with anything, given how fragile his conditioning is.
in the florist/tattoos AU, I suppose that might be one of the big reasons he went travelling with Shikako?
Although, I donāt know much about floristry, so itās harder to loop Ino in, I suppose my only thought here is that Iāve heard a couple things about a ābouquet of hateā, where you make a beautiful floral arrangement out of flowers that convey very dangerous sentiments.
One story specifically, and Iām sorry I donāt remember where I read it, had Darth Vader sending āPadme is dead and this Empire is built on treacheryā bouquets to Palpatineās Empire Day celebrations, using flower language from Naboo (and letting anyone who can read them realize that Palpatine doesnāt know his own planetās culture).
Iām not sure how to use that to loop her into such a story/concept, but itās attractive to me.
You rebloged a Hades/Persephone pic a while ago, and when I came across it in my dash, my first thought was that it was Anakin/Padme. And now I'm musing on who'd play the parts of Hades, Persephone, Eurydice, and Orpheus if that play was Star Wars? Who would you fit into those roles, do you think?
I havenāt seen Hadestown (which I assume youāre referencing when you say play), so I canāt really answer on that basis, but I am a big mythology buff so Iāll talk about that.
Before I can get to the Star Wars, though, I gotta talk about the mythology.
So, I basically have two distinct versions of the Hades and Persephone story in my head. Mythology is fluid and alive so Iām not about saying that thereās an āoriginalā version of any myth, but it is true that the ancient and the modern interpretations of the story are very different.
This is so cool, and interesting, and goes into a lot of stuff about the Hades/Persephone myth I didn't' actually know/think about before this! Thanks so much! <3
I apologize if my voice sounds bad i hate using the mic oh my god

Itās done! Iām done! I first heard this music about two years ago and thought it would pair great with the featured poem, but it was only after getting into the Adventure zone did I have a clear idea for an animatic. My goal for this project was to be a short, simple thing do be done in a week with 80 frames. I ended up making over 170. Which is great, but also exhausting! Have at thee!
