        “ Oh yes, ”  Michael responded sarcastically, arching a brow.  “ They’re quite fortunate indeed to have avoided what the Stirling lineage has to offer.  I imagine they would have been far too handsome to be beheld, had they not managed to do so.  I am grateful for it. ”  He smirked to himself, drawing her closer as he watched their children, features languidly melting into something more serene and soft.  “ Beautiful and happy, just like their mother, ”  Michael added after a moment, pressing a kiss to the crown of her head.  At least, he hoped she was happy.  Her happiness had long been his main endeavour in life.  There was a brief, contented silence before he spoke again.  “ You have given me so much, Frannie.  Everything. ”  He hadn’t expected to say anything of the kind, but his words were true  —  and hadn’t he spent far too much of his life keeping his feelings from her?  “ I love you. ”

        she leans back against him, saying,  ❝  and they have   their bridgerton lineage to thank for that.  ❞   it’s a teasing remark  ---  one would have to be blind to call michael anything but handsome, and the stirling clan in general weren’t short of sightly either. it was hard to fathom how john could look exactly like her and janet exactly like him and still evidently were siblings, but francesca supposed that was the magic of having a family.   ❝  beautiful and happy babies,  ❞   she muses as she watches them run around the courtyard, their nursemaids following them hurriedly. they would never be as big as her siblings’ families or like her own family, but she wouldn’t change how they were now for anything.

        ❝  what ?!  ❞   she’s practically stumbling into the drawing   room, the conversation she was having with the parlor maid outside all but forgotten upon hearing her husband’s exclamation. francesca should have been watching her movements with another child on the way, but she couldn’t miss such a milestone for little john  ---  that is, if he really did say a word and could get himself to say it again.   ❝  are you certain ? he does babble a lot these days and sometimes it sounds close to a word but isn’t quite the right pronunciation.  ❞   she crouches down to meet their son’s height, beaming at him as she instinctively pushes his hair away from his face.   ❝  what did you tell daddy, little one ?  ❞
