The heat suffocates him like a thick blanket. The train had been hot, but it is nothing compared to the station platform. Dusty and dry, the summer air fills his nose and lungs and suddenly it's hard to breathe. The chaos of Roma Termini isn't exactly helping. Santa merda...The noise! The people! Many are pushing through the crowd towards the exit, or hugging family members, waving, yelling. The booming announcements through the loud speakers make no sense.

Sweat breaks out on Alberto's forehead. The blur of noise and colour are dizzying. There is no water here. Not for miles. He can feel the absence of it. Panic rises inside him. Why did he come? What was he thinking! The phrase fish out of water has never felt more accurate in his life. Just as he decides this was a big ass mistake and he should definitely get back on the train and ride right back to Portorosso as soon as physically possible, he sees a very familiar sight in the crowd–a mop of dark curls and a pair of anxious brown eyes looking for something. Someone. When they spot Alberto standing under the platform sign, the worry instantly transforms into relief.

“ALBERTO!”

Any thought of going back home evaporates from Alberto's mind. He hoists his backpack higher on his shoulder and raises his hand, grinning from ear to ear.
