Nick Grimshaw, on hisĀ interview with Harry for Radio One.
Nick, phoning in from his holiday, to talk with Scott Mills about his interview with a solo Harry for Radio One. 4th April, 2017.
Scott: Thank you, BBC. Thank you God.Ā This is special. Itās happening on Friday morning. Harryās on the Radio One Breakfast Showā¦and good morning Nicholas Grimshaw.
Scott: Ā (After someĀ initial chat)ā¦Ok, tell me about Harry Styles,Ā ācause youāve done the interview already, and weāre gonna play it out on Friday.
Nick:Ā Ā Itās really exciting. Weirdly, itās the only time that Iāve ever sat down and interviewed Harry Styles. Like, Iāve known him for a long time but heās never actually been on the Radio One Breakfast Show. The only time he came on was when he came on straight through crew after the Brit awards one night, andĀ he was on for about an hour before someone contacted him from his record label and asked him toĀ āget off the radio!ā
Scott: Ā ā¦oh I remember thatā¦
Nick: Ā ā¦so heās never actually been on as a guest. Weā¦we interviewed him down at Maida Vale once where he didnāt have a voice, so he could only speak through a computer, so it was the first time weāve had a proper sit-down talk, but we had a massive chat - sat down for, like, two and a half, three hours or something. It was really really long, but, um, it was really good. There was a lot to talk about. There was talking about how it is now being, yāknow,Ā a solo artist. How it was writing the record. How you even start to write a solo record. Where he wrote itā¦and he spoke all about making the album, and, like, now, basically having to become a solo artist, and that pressure of, yāknow, knowing that the world are gonna want to hear this, and are going to want to judge it as well, and on Friday, when you play itā¦but we played it in the room, and itāsā¦itās so goodā¦itās really really good, and itās much - no offence - itās much better than I thought it was gonna beā¦
Scott: Ā (gasps) ohhh, heās your friendā¦
Nick: Ā No, I know, but itās so good. I was likeĀ āah, wow, this is really goodā. Heās like,Ā āyou should not be surprisedāā¦
Scott: Ā But because you are mates, even if it wasnāt as good as it is, would you have been, like,Ā āyeah, itās really goodā?
Nick: Ā Ah, no. Maybeā¦no, because I heard itā¦he cameĀ āround and played it to me, and we were sort of avoiding it all day. So we, like, went for breakfast, and then Iām like,Ā weāve gotta hear this song at some point, and there was a dread in my brain, because I thoughtĀ āwhat if itās bad?āā¦so, um, orā¦āwhat if I donāt like it?āā¦Iām really bad at lyingā¦so it sort of went on all day, and then, eventually, aboutĀ four oāclock I wentĀ āalright, cāmon, lets do itā and I heard it, and it was great. But there was that moment I was thinkingĀ āhow am I going to get out of this car if it is bad. Maybe a stop, drop and roll at the lights. I canāt wait for everyone to hear it.
Scott: Ā You donāt really hear him talk very often, do you? In fact, from what Iāve heard heās not even doing many interviews. Heās doing, like, I think, four or five interviews around the world, and one of those is with you.
Nick: Ā Yeah, heās doing a lot. HeāsĀ only doing Saturday Night Live, um, and heās doing some other stuff in America, and us, on Friday.
Scott: Ā Thatās amazing. Right, well I canāt wait to hear this. Apparently thereās one copy of it in the whole world, and itās being passed around on an iPod. Did you know this?
Nick: Ā I did not know that. One copy of the song? Wow.
Scott: Ā Yeah. So Iām gonna hear it later today - I havenāt heard it yet - but Iāve beenā¦Iāve beenĀ summoned, and itās, like, Iāve gotta be there at - I dunno - at, like, (impersonating posh voice)Ā āatĀ 12.32, and you will put the headphones on, on this iPod, ohāā¦and thenā¦
Scott: Ā ā¦and thatās the only one thatās going around. Thatās how worried they are about people hearing it before they should.
Nick: Ā Wow. Youāre gonna love it.
Scott: Ā Ok. And make sure you listen to the interview, Friday morning. Grimmy, and Harry Styles, on the Radio One Breakfast Show, and weāll play the brand new track. Ok, back to the holiday, please.
Scott: Ā Love you, byeā¦
Soā¦the anticipation builds. And the interview is about the music. Hooray.Ā Bring it on.
