My favorite technology we discussed was virtual reality. I was at the mall with my sisters the other day and actually tried out a VR headset in the microsoft store. It is a very surreal experience. You really feel immersed in the game or the area you are exploring. My least favorite technology was twitter. I really do not like twitter. I should clarify and say that I can see the use for twitter in fans following their idols and such, but the vast majority of twitter users feel compelled by the technology and culture to tweet when they have nothing of interest to tweet. For the most part,  twitter is a vapid, empty landscape. It’s earnings reflect this.

One mashup concept I discovered was “e-learning”. This technology  aims to provide a classroom-like experience for those who can’t be there in person. This is created through the  combination of many different technologies. By combining a web browser, word processing software, an email system, and a web cam, e-learning companies can provide an experience that is as close to being in the classroom as possible.

One technology that I do not believe will stay relevant is linkedin. I believe that companies should have a more nuanced approach in communicating and  hiring people. I believe that as technology advances, we will return to this idea, and see it aided by improved technology.

A technology mashup blends information from multiple sources. These sources come together to create visually powerful ways for the consumer to understand the information better. This makes information more easily accessible, so we are not overloaded with information. The mashup that I chose as my favorite was housingmaps.com. It applies an amalgamation of various real estate information like prices, what apartments are for rent and for sale, and the geographical location. This lets you sort by these filters in a streamlined way. I found this so interesting because I am interested in working in real estate as a career. I would hopefully use it with this.

4chan is an image sharing board where people can post and discuss about the picture or idea. Reddit and 4chan are similar in their general idea. They are both image boards that encourage discussion below. The difference that separates the two is that 4chan has no real moderation. Users are free to discuss whatever they want and post whatever they want. This leads to some disgusting posts, but also leads to uninhibited discussion where all opinion can be posted. I am concerned for reddit over the next 5 years,because they began to quarantine subreddits that they deemed offensive or dangerous. In my opinion, freedom of speech is the most important for honest discussion. As reddit is more and more moderated, freedom of speech is diluted, and so is the honesty of the discussion.

I was not offended. I did laugh quite a lot. I already used reddit a good amount, so I don’t think I can afford to increase my usage haha. Reddit definitely has a future in my opinion. I believe that reddit appeals mostly to those who grew up in the age of the internet. My karma is 70.

The controversy I chose was concerning the  idea of a “witch hunt” that occurs on the internet. Reddit has in this case, and in several others basically became the internet judge, jury, and executioner. They decide that the person in question has done wrong, and because of this, they will torment this person sending death threats and abusing them. The problem is that this phenomena occurs so quickly that the initial judgment is found to be wrong, but once reddit is against somebody wholeheartedly, it is too late.

I do think reddit can be a valid news source, but as with anything on the internet,its  good to keep a healthy skepticism about what can be objective and what cannot.
