The Calm: Aviary Antics ch. 9
The bullets nearly missed the two Seals. As the navymen planned their next move, Clint grabbed a grenade from off his pack. It had a big white X on it; he pulled the pin and dropped the explosive as loudly as he could into the bunker. Hearing a number of guns drop and a lot of running, the two Seals entered the bunker; guns at the ready. There were three guards balled up against the wall. In the middle of the room was the grenade with a white X. “Glad you brought the ‘dummy bombs’ Yeti?” Lt. Richards asked. “Oh yes” they zip tied the surrendered men then entered deeper into the bunker. The next room was dark. With his night vision equipment back on, clint checked the room for traps. “It’s clear.” He whispered. Bullet fire filled the next room. They cleared out the ill trained insurgents with ease. But suddenly there was cold metal on the back of Clint’s head. He knew it was a gun. And before he could react, a gunshot ripped the air!
“Hey Clint! You done daydreaming yet?” Clint Yates looked around. He was back in the Chevy Blazer while him and Freddie were driving to the west side of Isla Sorna. “Oh sorry. I was just thinking.” “What about?” “Just some bad memories.” Freddie sensed it was a tender topic so he didn’t pursue. They drove passed the meadow with the herds of dinosaurs grazing. The gentle song of the brachiosaurs permeating the air. A couple triceratops were dueling in the field as well. Freddie pulled the car over by a stream and they both got out. “Today we’re going to see the birds.” “Birds? Don’t you think that’s a little underwhelming compared to that?” Clint pointed to sevenPara’s grazing near by. Freddie laughed at the remark. “Yes it would be if they were normal birds. But is anything on Sorna normal to you? Haha!” He pulled a box of fish surrounded by ice out of the bed of the vehicle. He took one and threw it into the sky. It fell to the ground with nothing exciting to show for it. “Was that it?” Clint asked. “Just wait for it bud. They can see that fish from a mile away.” After about a minute there was a sound in the air, not unlike when someone is waving a large flag. In an instant, a dark shadow passed over Clint and Freddie. It grabbed the fish off the ground and flew up. Clint looked at the winged shadow, he noticed it was actually tanish gray and had a long beak with a a long crest on the back of its teal colored head. It had leathery wings and two small feet. The creature looked like it was barely holding together. Very thin and fragile looking, the 'bird’ landed nearby and began to eat the fish. “This is one of our Pteranodons. Well of the blue flock. I’ll show you the orange flock later.” A couple more landed about ten feet from the two men as if to say “we want fish too!” Freddie threw some fish to the new comers who enjoyed them greatly. Freddie continued his narrative: “These were our first batch. They act a lot like seagulls. They scavenge anything. But they aren’t really aggressive. I had one land on my shoulders once. It felt like a tall sail on your shoulders.” The Pteranodons had finished their treats and started to fly off into the distance. The two men walked back to their vehicle. “Now it’s time to see the Orange Flock.”
They drove for about twenty minutes, until on their left, there was what looked like a large shed that had a round look to it. It overlooked a large canyon with a river at the bottom. They were sandwiched between this building and the fence that enclosed the Infant Spinosaurus. They parked off to the side next to a couple other Ingen vehicles. “We get front row seats down at the observation deck.” They entered the building that had multiple men in white coats. Most of them were looking out the window down into the canyon and taking notes. “So this is a rather new experiment for the scientists. We already had the Blue flock that keeps to the island. They really have no desire to leave. But part of what Ingen wanted us to do is 'upgrade the assets’ and so they came up with these.” They walked down. A metal spiral staircase into an enclose cage like room. Looking out, Clint noticed that they were in a huge metal bird cage that looked to be a couple hundred feet tall. “Ingen built this aviary in the late 80’s to house the Pteranodons but we saw how docile they were we eventually let them just live throughout the island. But when they started on the new batch of Pteranodons, we noticed they weren’t as friendly. You see, to compete their genetic code, the lab coats put in a little bit of goose in there. Unknowingly how territorial geese can be. With that they also have migratory mindset and they don’t want to stay put on the island. We let a couple of the first ones out to see if they would stay but they almost immediately started to fly north. We had one hell of a time tracking them down with the Chopper.” Both men chuckled at that “So now we have to be in this protected observation deck when examining them.” They looked out into the canyon. It was very foggy that day and they couldn’t see much. Then a three orange and black Pteranodons flew past. One of them spotted the two Officers and flew straight at them. It rammed the fence guarding Clint and Freddie and there was a flash of sparks. RAAAAAAWWWWW! The flying reptile screeched and flew off to the others. Clint lowered his arm that he has used to shield himself. “Why do you even keep them? They seem too dangerous.” “Ingen’s not a big fan of losing money by putting down an asset. So they think that they could just put them on display.” This statement didn’t sit well with either man. “That’s actually the reason we have Male Dinosaurs on the island. In the park they had only females to keep them from breeding. But here we let there be males to save money on artificial births. It cost quite a bit to do the whole put the DNA into the egg. So they let the Dino’s have some fun. This hasn’t had too many consequences yet but I’m sure we’ll see some in the future. This entire place is hanging by a thread. Ingen has lost so much money, they can’t afford another disaster.” Clint shook his head. “The more I hear about what Ingen 'wants’ the more chaotic this place seems.” The Pteranodons flew over them one more time then flew off into a fog cloud.

The Carnotaurus attack from chapter 8 on the story.
The Calm: Breakout ch. 8
"Ok we need to get the chopper in the air now!" Freddie told Mark. "Clint and I will be be heading the ground team." In the late afternoon sun, the two partners got into their Chevy Blazer and started driving south. While they did, Freddie spoke into the walky-talkie on the console: "hey Tony, you there?" The walky was silent and then a response came through. "Yeah Freddie, I'm here. What can I do for you?" "We have a code 3 situation here. Carnotaurus on the loose. We need to get the chopper to the woods near 'Devils Bay' pronto!" "Copy that on our way." They drove up to a fence similar to that of the raptors. There was a maintenances crew with a couple more Asset Security Officers. Clint recognized a couple of them as men he saw on the boat coming here to the island. They were all surrounding a large tree that had fallen over onto the fence and smashed it so that one could easily go from inside to outside. "Bob how many got out?" Freddie asked one of the Officers. "Well as far as we can tell only one. Ya know how hard they're to spot." Freddie nodded his head in agreement. "Ok Clint the thing about the Carno's is when they made the first batch, the scientists noticed that they kept changing color. Not much. Just different shades. It wasn't until they reached maturity that they started blending in with their surroundings. It became a problem so we tracked them with Thermal imaging." As he said this he pulled two sets of headset equipment out of the back of their vehicle. They looked a lot like night vision equipment that he had used in the past. Freddie put his set on and then pushed a button on the side of the tech. Clint repeated the action and the scenery around him was transformed into a world of bright colors of yellow reds and purples. Looking around his fellow employees were a mix of red and yellow with purple foliage around them. Looking at the fallen tree he could see faint but noticeable spots that were warmer than the rest of the trunk. Following the spots they went into the jungle next to the fence. "Ok boys this is going to a quick capture and detain." Freddie told the group. Most armed with taser pikes and air guns that shot tranquilizer darts. "Keep close to those who have thermal goggles. And hand signals only. We don't want to make it too easy for the Carno's." Freddie handed Clint a tranq-gun and took one for himself. Above them, the thundering sound of the green A109A Agusta Helicopter, was circling the party. The group (which numbered 14) made their way through the dense jungle, on the hunt for their invisible quarry. Clint looked around him and saw the jungle alive around them all. Bugs were going along with their lives, unaware of the situation at hand. The helicopter was becoming increasing unhelpful so Freddie sent it back. After about 20 minutes of walking, everyone's attention was drawn to one of the A.S.O.'s that had a thermal goggle set on. He motioned to a patch in front of them near a log. Clint looked and sure enough there was a large hot spot that showed up a red and orange spectrum on the ground. One of the officers aimed and fired at the hotspot. Clint expected a roar of frustration from a dinosaur but the only sound they heard was the dart hitting the heavily foliaged earth. Clint removed his goggles to see what happened. A couple of the men went over to the spot to investigate. They found nothing but a warm patch of grass and bush that had been flattened. In a low whisper, Freddie to his partner: "looks like it just laid down to rest. But it can't have gone too far if the heat signature is that high." They continued to walk through the jungle that was growing increasingly dark. Luckily the growing darkness did little to affect the thermal vision Clint was using. But somehow he wandered off in a direction that was partially off the path of the rest of the group. He was passing tree trunks and bushes and that's when he saw it. Directly ahead of him was a white hot head with two sharp shapes on top. He took aim with his air rifle. But before he could shoot, the white head grew to be one large body that was at him in a flash. He barley had time to use the gun to block the set of teeth, that were moments from sinking into his flesh. The gun was stuck longways in the Monsters mouth, impeding its progress. Though the carnivore was stayed for a moment in the confusion, it pushed forward. Clint was knocked into a tree and suddenly the red, yellow, and purple world was plunged into darkness. He whipped the goggles off and dropped to the floor, fast-crawling to where a hollow log was fallen. The whole time, the Carnotaurus was jabbing with its jaws at where the former soldier used to be, but speed was on Clint's side. Once inside the downed tree, Clint stared out to were the prehistoric hunter was, but saw nothing except jungle forest. But then the forest seemed to move its large, three taloned foot and shift its weight to look down at him better. In the dim light of the growing night, the Carno lunged at the log tumbling Clint around inside. The gun went flying as well until it was out near the foot of the Dinosaur. Clint was genuinely frightened for his life at this moment. To make matters worse, part of the logs walls were beginning to crack and fall on top of former Navy man. But an idea struck him. He worked it out and took ahold of a chunk of wood and tossed it the best he could out near a bush behind the jaws of death. It was a direct hit. It made enough noise to make the Carnotaurus turn its huge horned head in the direction of the bush just long enough to let the Seal grab the gun and shoot up into the heart of the beast. The tall creature teetered to one side and tried to correct its self but to no avail. It crashed into the dense fauna of the jungle. Clint stood up and looked at the twitching body. It's giant feet were still kicking, but very slowly. The victor of the fight turned and saw three of the workers staring at him in awe. One yelled to the dense jungle: "Freddie we found it!" Pretty soon the whole hunting party was there congratulated the "new guy" on tackling the Carno. "I have to hand it to you Yates. You can really handle yourself! Proud to have you on the team!" Clint smiled at his partner. "You know what, you can call me Yeti. I'm more used to that anyway." Little known to Freddie, this was a very high compliment. This nickname mean a lot to him. Clint was now feeling at home.

The Calm: A little Scare ch. 7
"Ok who's next?" Clint asked his parter. They were driving northward along the east coast of the island that overlooked the Pacific Ocean. "Well he have to help check on a Pachy that got stuck in some river. And then you get to see one of our newest Dino's, Spinosaurus." Clint chuckled to himself. The names of all of these dinosaurs were ridiculous. He heard one the other day that he really could pronounce. It was like a Mame- Mamenchi- something it sounded Chinese and it had the longest neck he had seen. "So from what I have gathered the Pachy is one that you might get a laugh out of. We named her Gloria Estefan, well Gloria." "As in the singer?" "Yeah the one of the vet trucks was playing 'Get on your feet' by her and the Pachy's head was bobbing up and down. The guys say she liked the music, but it was probably the drugs in her system. Funny enough this Pachy is deathly afraid of water. She'll drink it fine but won't go wash in it." "A Dino that's afraid of water? This place is turning from magical to human so fast." Clint said with a laugh. "Yes the Dino's start to have personalities as you get to know them. Now you will notice that the Pachy's that we have here are pretty short, about 4 feet tall, the Lab Coats tell me that they messed up the DNA mixing process so now they are all too shot. Apparently they should be about 8-10 feet tall but we get the midgets." They pulled up to a river that had a small island in it. From what Clint saw, this island was only there when the river was high and the was a shallow part of the river that acted as a bridge in the dry months. On the island was an animal that was pacing back and forth. The animal was a gray tan with blue markings down its back and around its eyes. But the most prominent feature was the bald spot on its head that looked like bone, with spikes all over the face. It was calling frantically to the jungle air. "Yep she's stuck." The Pachycephalosaurus was eyeing the water with much anxiety. Clint could see that 'Gloria' could have gotten out of the predicament very easily if she just walked through the shallow part, but he had a feeling that wasn't going to happen. The Pachy gave a low yell at the men approaching her as if to call for help. The two men stood at the bank and looked for anything to get the dinosaur across with. Then Freddie's expression changed to excited. "I may have an idea. Just a sec." He went to the Blazer and took out what looked like a big black box. Upon closer inspection, Clint noticed a speaker, control buttons and a cassette tape slot that was filled. Freddie, still in the water, walked around the little sandbar of an island behind the Pachy, which was now looking very nervous at him. Once on the opposite of the Pachy, he yelled to Clint: " go stand in the bushes off to your right, oh and cover your ears. After Clint had done as he was asked, Freddie pushed play and a deafening roar of a tyrannosaurus obliterated the quiet jungle creek silence. The Pachy, forgetting its fear of water in respect for a much graver fear ran as fast as it could through the shallow bed and off into the jungle leaving a trail of dung along the way. Freddie was laughing as he walked back to his partner. "I hate having to scare her like that but it works. And it's the funniest thing to watch!" "Aren't you afraid that that would scare them to death?" The former Seal asked. "No, they are built to run away from things like this so when the situation arrives, their stress, and bodies are ready for it, even if their minds aren't." Clint smiled at that. "Ok and is that some mega Walkmen that you have?" "No, no this is a piece of equipment that they invented for us. It's busts out around 120 decibels, which is the same as your average electric guitar with an amplifier turned all the way up. We have many different sound for different things. Some of injured young Dino's to get the adults attention and some of injured adults to attract the carnivores. Speaking of which, it's time to show you the newest dinosaur!" The drive up the road for about 15 minutes and came to a large fence the same size as the T-Rex fence. There was a jeep parked there at the control panel and a man in a plaid shirt and black tie was looking beyond the fence at what looked like a red and great fin. "Hey Randy, you checking up on 'Spiny"? The young man turned around. He looked to be fresh out of school. And that face. He knew- "Robbie?" Clint asked. "Oh no sorry you must have met my brother. We're identical twins. But definitely not the same brains. I'm a researcher up at the lab while he does the computer in the O.B." Clint remembered Robbie mentioning he worked at the Operations Building. "oh then I looks like your family got a couple of geniuses. Computers and Genetics." "Yeah well I don't want to brag." Randy laughed "Oh so yes, Freddie to answer your question, our Spinosaurus seems to be growing well. But doesn't look too good so I was giving him some Meds." They all stepped to the fence and just behind it was a small creature that was about 5 feet at the top of it's sail protruding from its back. It had a long snout and long arms with three claws on each. "Isn't he something!" Freddie asked. "Well it's a bit small don't you think?" Randy laughed a bit. "Well Mr.-" "Yates." "Ok Mr. Yates, he is not even 3 months old. He is expected to be about as tall, if not taller that Stubs our largest T-Rex!" Suddenly the little dinosaur took on a more helpless look in its green eyes. It was looking at the three men while they talked. "Oh randy, is he eating fish yet?" With an annoyed sigh. The scientist responded. "No he hasn't. I told George to not feed him red meats because of this. He is likely to get sick because his body was made to run off of fish meat. Now all he wants is Beef and goat. This may affect him in ways I can't even imagine. And that's saying a lot" Clint looked at the Dino and its gray, red and white sail. "It looks so different from the others that I have seen." Randy smiled at the observation. "Well he was supposed to look a lot different than that. When we started to test out the DNA strand. What came out looked a lot like a crocodile with a sail. Corporate didn't like it and asked us to make it looked like a dinosaur
The Calm: Stubs, Buck and Rose ch. 6
As the guards moved on to check if they killed an intruder, Yates and his team of Seals proceeded inland past abandoned buildings. As they planned, Johnson and Stamos stayed behind to secure the beach for extraction. Lieutenant David Richards lead Clint to the next check point. A desert ridge over looking a shallow valley with their target, a cement building that was partially submerged in sand and rock. "Ok Yeti, we got about one click between us and that bunker, we go in, get the ambassador and get out." Whispered Lt. Richards. "Copy that sir." Both of the Seals strategically made their way down the sandy slope and covered the distance to the bunker in 5 minutes. They both stood back against the outer wall. Yates opened the door down into the bunker and there was a spray of gunfire coming right at him! Clint Gates woke up in a cold sweat. He looked at the clock at his bed stand. 8:47. Work starts in a half hour. So he got up and made himself ready. After his shower, he was putting on his dark green uniform and he thought about his life right now. After the shock of realizing that he now takes care of dinosaurs for a living, he was becoming used to it all. After 3 days on the job, he has really gotten to know the island well. Even the scratch on his arm from helping feed a rambunctious Ceratosaurus was finally scabbing over. He walked out to the Operations Building to see if his partner Freddie was there yet. And of course he was. Freddie was a very schedule-oriented kind of person. And he hated being late to things so he was always early. "Mornin sunshine! Ready for some real work? They scheduled us to work with the Rexes today." The schedules for the A.S.O.'s changed day to day to keep them from getting too laid back on their jobs. "Rexes? I haven't heard that Dino before." Freddie laughed. "It's short for T-Rex. Which is short for Tyrannosaurus Rex. This is one of my favorites. You'll see why when we get there." They both hopped into their car, a forest green Chevy Blazer. As with every vehicle on the island, it had a white 'Ingen' logo with the words 'We make the future' below it. Clint was told how Ingen had numerous subdivisions leading to many different trades of the world. The Asset Security Sector was in a private security sector of the company that helped the Genetic and Maintenance divisions. As they drove east to the White forest and the Rexes, Freddie explained the Rex situation. "We currently have 3 T-Rex on the island. Two are almost fully grown (both males) and one subadult who is a female. The older male we call 'Stubs' because he was born with one hand and now just has a stub. The other male is 'Buck'. We think- well I think, he has a crush on the girl. Her name is 'Rose'. The boys like to fight and play around but Rose likes to be on her own." They were driving through the thick coniferous jungle when the tree line stopped in front of a large fenced in area that over looked the Pacific Ocean. The fence was unlike any of the fences he had seen so far. It looked like it was for a high security prison, for a giant! It stood about 20 ft. high and had thick bars connecting the pylons, with sharp large sized barbed wires on top. Clint could hear the gentle him of the elect "As you can see we really have secured these Dino's with extreme caution. The fence used to be less... Scary, but since the incident on Nublar we upgraded." Freddie recalled. "Why? Did a T-Rex get out?" Freddie gave a sharp laugh. "Oh yes she did. 'Rexy' was one of the first Rexes we bred here. She was always hyper. I'm sure she took advantage of a situation. But anyway she did break out and went on a rampage. I'm not sure if she's alive anymore. But I think sh-" A roar so loud, it almost sent Clint into a war flashback, ripped the air. Clint recognized it as the same one he heard on his voyage to Isla Sorna. "Oh good they're awake. I hate having to wake them. Haha they're worse than teenagers!" They both stepped up to the fence and met the feeding crew with the one of the meat trucks. The truck was a GM- HM series modified instead of a water tank on the back, there was a box that was constantly warming the meats that were carefully organized in orders of which Dino they went to. The crew had already picked out the three cow halves for the monsters Clint had yet seen. "Normally we would feed them live goats or cows but there's some sickness going on with our herds on the island." Clint recalled seeing those herds a few days previous. They were located on the west side of the island along with the Geothermal power plant and the food process plant. "Ok Gary should we call the lady first?" Freddie asked one of the Food workers. "Sure thing." That same worker pressed a couple buttons on the console that was on a fence pylon. "This releases a hormone into the air that Rose just loves and now associates with food. We have a separate one for the boys." Within a matter of minutes, the ground started to shake as if a steady drum beat was sounding a war. A brown head poked out of the redwood trees. Then proceeded to the hunk of meat that was her meal. (The workers had put it through a slot in the base of the fence.) The 13 ft. tall creature sniffed the carcass then took it in her massive jaws and walked away. "Impressive isn't she?" Freddie asked the former Seal. "You got that right." Clint looked in awe. "Ok Gary call in the boys!" With a couple more buttons pushed, it wasn't long before there was twice the amount of thunderous tremors felt in the ground. Two massive dark green heads followed by huge bodies, entered the feeding area. One was noticeably bigger but not by much. He was also missing one of the tiny arms the other Rexes had. Stubs. Buck came in behind and looked on at the crew below, and gave a soft roar. A couple men were at the first slot and two more were at the second slot about twenty feet off to the right. Both tyrannosaurs seemed to know which one was who's so they took their food and stepped off into the foliage. The female, Rose could still be seen in the wooded area, and buck noticed her as well. He dropped his meat chunk, tore off a bit and placed it before the female. She looked at him, sniffed the meat and then ate it in one gulp. Buck then left to eat his meal. "What a Casanova." Freddie laughed. Clint could hardly believe the romance that he had just witnessed. But noticed Stubs was staring at the female from afar. And he didn't look happy.
Scene from the fifth chapter of the fanfic old Betty falling in the river.
The Calm: Old Betty ch. 5
The drive back, Arty went on about how he reacted the first time he saw a dinosaur. “I pretty much lost my mind and started yelling at it! Not sure why. I just did. It did nothing-” “Hey Arty are you there?” The radio on the console asked. The Island Manager picked up the hand set and answered: “Yeah Freddie I’m here. What’s wrong?” “It’s old Betty again. She nearly impaled Thompson when he went to give her the shots. Now she is running in circles in a fuss.” Arty sighed but then had an idea. He trend to Clint and said: “ok rookie we have a rouge Trike (that’s triceratops) and she has been giving us trouble for weeks. Let’s see if you have any ideas!” He pushed the talk button on the radio and spoke. “Ok Freddie we’re yon our way. Is she still by the Gorge?” “She was when we got here but she’s been running around so much, we’re nearly to the deep channel now.” There was a deep roar sound and crashing, braking metal sounds coming from behind the mans voice. “You better hurry.” The drove through what Art my called ‘the Meadow’ “this is where most of our big Sauropods like Brachiosaurus and Mamenchisaurus roam. A long side our medium Dino’s.” As they drove, Clint saw large necks that were impossibly long with little heads on the end, grazing on the trees near by. But the dust cloud up ahead was stealing the former soldiers attention. They parked the car and reached the other men hiding behind a Chevy Suburban that read: 'Veterinary Unit’ which had three puncture holes on the other side. The dust cloud was covering up most of what was happening but Clint could hear loud grunting and trampling with the ground shaking beneath him. “Ok we’re not sure what happened Arty but she has just gone insane on us!” Freddie, his new found friend of last night. “Have you tried tranq-ing her?” The middle aged man nodded and said “yeah we even got the dosage right! But she’s so hopped up with adrenaline that it’s not doing anything!” The dust cleared and Clint could see a gray animal with three horns on its head and a frill on the back of its head. The animal was thrashing about wildly and mock charging at them and a group of orange Dino’s that reminded Clint of an ostrich. The ostrich-Dino’s fled the scene quickly. As the trike turned around, Clint noticed a black mark on its rump. around the mark the skin looked red. From what he knew it looked like a burn. He had seen plenty of them in battle. The trike made another mock charge at the vehicle. The vets looking desperate. Clint surveyed the area they were at. He noticed a low ridge off to the left of the group and the dinosaur. It fell into a shallow river. The ledge was maybe five to six feet from the water. Clint made a plan in his head and acted on a dime. He ran to the back of vehicle, then walked carefully over to the ledge and faced the Triceratops. “Hey! Hey you with the bad hairdo! Yep that’s right. Walk this way!” He yelled to the mighty creature, which complied angrily. It more of targeted him in its sights from Clint’s perspective. And as soon as the trike gave the slightest indication it was going to charge, Clint jumped in the river. SPLASH! The river wasn’t too deep, only up to his shoulders, but it was enough. He swam as fast he could the opposite direction to get out of the way for- SPLASH!! An even bigger roar of water propelled him forward. He looked back to see the trike on its side trying to get up. But there was something else. It seemed to be calming down instead of angry it just fell off a cliff. It sat up with its rump in the water, not unlike a dog, panting in the hot sun. Clint could tell his plan worked and the trike was beginning to calm even more as the tranquilizer was finally taking affect.
The vets did what they were there to do, while Clint was drying off with an enthusiastic new boss congratulating him. “See Freddie this is what you boys needed! A soldier who knows what he’s doing. That was beautiful son. Keep it up and I might have to make you Head A.S.O. .” “Not bad Clint! We didn’t even see that burn mark! Let alone I wouldn’t have known that’s what was agitating her.” Freddie admired. “I’ve seen my share of burns like that, and we kept them cool usually with ice but that river worked nicely so I did what I had to.” “Well I’m glad you guys got here in time! Could’ve gotten real messy if you hadn’t shown up.” Clint to look at the sun which was now setting, with a chorus of dinosaur songs in the air. “So this is what my job is now?” “Sure is son. Hope I didn’t scare you off on the first day.” Arty laughed. “Nope, just the opposite.”

The Calm: New Boss ch. 4
Clint Yates walked through the front doors of the Operations Building. He was greeted by a blast of cool air, in contrast to the hot Central American heat outside. “Hello can I help you?” Clint was asked by the receptionist behind the front desk. She was a women maybe in her 50’s with a pleasant smile. “Yeah I’m here to see… Uh Arty.” “Oh you must be the new A.S.O.! Wait here I will grab him for you.” Clint looked around the room and found a large mural behind the desk, of what looked like a tiki hut-like plaza with green and yellow cars pulling out with excited people inside. Above them, in bold red letters were the words: “Jurassic Park”. Off to the right in the painted foliage was a monstrous head with a mouthful of razor sharp teeth. “Tyrannosaurus Rex! They are much more impressive in real life!” Clint turned to the mild baritone voice, who he assumed was Arty, his new boss. And found a man also in his fifties but still in excellent shape. “You must be our new Security Officer! Mr. Yates was it?” “Yes sir. Glad to meet you. It’s quite the… Zoo you got out there.” Arthur McDonald laughed at the joke. “Well this wasn’t meant to be the zoo but has almost turned into it this past year. I’m assuming you would love to hear the full story?” “Well seeing dinosaurs did raise my eye brows a bit.” The Seal replied. “Haha yes it would for most people. Come into my office and I will explain what I can.”
They both sat down in their respective seats, Yates in a comfortable arm chair, Arty behind his desk which had a skull with sharp teeth in its maw, sitting on top. “You like that?” One of the raptors went sour and we had to put her down. I asked for her head because I liked her spirit. She wouldn’t take no for an answer! Just the kind of people I need here. I hope that for you. So I hear you are military?“ "Ex-military. I was a Seal. Did a couple tours. Desert Storm was my last rodio. After the discharge I have a sour taste for it all.” The new boss looked solemn. “Yes I heard about the discharge as well. I’m not going to ask for the details. I don’t need them. The past is not my concern. Anyway. How how old are you son?” “32 turning 33 in December.” Arty smiled and stated: “good! We need able bodied men her. There is much to do every day. But we can get into your duties later. What is your first question? I’m sure your head is swarming with them.” You got that right. Yates thought. He organized his questions mentally to get the most information the quickest. “Well what is this place?” “Very good question son. To answer that you have to know about John Hammond. A very rich man who had a dream. A theme park with live dinosaur attractions. He and an associate, Dr. Henry Wu, made that dream a reality. They came up with the ingenious method of retrieving Dinosaur DNA from mosquitoes trapped in petrified amber.” “Amber?” Clint asked feeling ill educated on the subject. “Yes Amber. Tree resin that had fossilized. Apparently Mosquitos often got stuck in it so there is ample supply. Well Hammond had his team of scientists get as much DNA as they could but eventually had to fill in the gaps with amphibian and reptile DNA. With that they eventually had the park, that’s ‘Jurassic Park’, up and running so to speak.” “And this park is not on this island correct?” “No no it was on an island about 90 miles north-east of here, with the name of Isla Nublar.” “Was?” “About 10 months ago, there was an incident involving the death of four individuals. Three of which were employees, and the fourth was a lawyer that represented investors in the Park.” “That doesn’t sound safe. How is this island different?” Arty chuckled. “That is an excellent question. To answer that I would like to take you on a little field trip.
They exited the building and walked over to one of the jeeps near by. "Our job on this island originally was to create the Assets, let them reach maturity, then ship them off to Nublar for the Park.” They both got into the the forest green vehicle and drove off towards the west. As they did, Arty continued his story. “When the Park went dark, we were given new orders for this island. Maintain and upgrade the assets. This meant we needed to keep the Dino’s safe and see if we could make them better. But your job is to make them safe. Even against them selves if needed. ” They reached a large fence made out of heavy metal beams and rods. Clint and Arty stepped out of the jeep and walked up to the fence. Clint heard a heavy purring sound. “Is there a Dino in there? I can’t see anything.” Clint remarked. “Well they can see you son. Try and step forward a little closer friend.” The former soldier complied. With the agility of lightning 3 orange creatures with black stripes, tore through the underbrush and attempted to attack through the bars. CRASH! Clint cursed while he jumped back towards his new boss. With loud screech like roaring, the creatures paced the perimeter fence. “These are some of our Raptors. Beautiful aren’t they?” Arty asked. “Just take away the teeth and they might win me over.” Clint retorted, trying to catch his breath. “Well you better get used to them son. This is your job. Feeding, protecting the maintenance workers and other things. Can I count on you Clint? We need people we can trust here. That’s why the other island failed. They put their trust in the wrong person, but I have a good feeling about you.” The raptors continued to snarl at the two. Clint turned back to Arty and said “I’m in.”
The Calm: First Day ch. 3
SPLASH!!! Yates hit the water as fast as gravity would allow him. Almost as fast as he fell, he was back at the surface. He and his fellow Seals swam to the smokey beach. He could see from where he made land, the bunker was not far from there. “Yeti! You see that patrol?” Yates scanned the beach with is night vision gear. Sure enough! Three men in black were walking through the smoke and they were not lightly armed. They were coming this way. Yates motioned to Johnson to make a distraction. His team mate nodded in agreement. Johnson found a rock about the size of his fist, took an and threw it into a bush about twenty yards away. And with the precision of a Navy Seal, it was a direct hit! It got the job done. As the patrol thought there was someone hiding in the bushes, the lead man ordered his two partners to open fire. The sound of automatic fire tore the early morning silence. CRACK CRACK CRACK!!! KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK! “Mr. Yates rise and shine!” Clint’s eyes fluttered open. As he released the instinctive grip on the knife he placed under his pillow, he answered “mm-be out in a moment.” He slumped into the small bathroom, made himself presentable, and joined his young friend outside. “So we have quite the day ahead of us today but first I wanted to show you something. As you can see, the Operations building is behind us. That is where you will be meeting Arty, the boss. But if you hop in the jeep with me, I’ll show you what we do here!” That perked the former Soldiers attention. “I would not be apposed to that.” “Ok then let’s get going ‘cause we gotta get back before twelve thirty.”
They both climbed into the the Wrangler and started down the jungle road north. As they drove away, Clint notice there were only a couple bungalow style houses like his, but around five apartment buildings in the village. “So not that I’m complaining, but why do I get one of the few bungalows?” He asked Robbie who was guiding the jeep through the jungle. “Well you see back awhile, a couple of the A.S.O.’s , Or Asset Security Officer’s, nearly died and threatened to quit. So the head of security made a compromise. They get the bungalows, which were originally a ‘do a good job and you get one of these’ promotions. I guess they felt that they needed special accommodations to ‘relieve’ the stress of their jobs.” “Just how stressful is this job?” “Well I’m in the operations building for most of the day so not really stressful for me, but A.S.O.’s I would say is pretty stressful!” As he closed his comment, they stopped off the road that had a view of a field with many tan mounds in the tall grass. “Ok what is the 'Asset’ I am securing?” Robbie smiled and motioned to the field. “You’re looking at 'em man!” He then hit the horn. As if on Que., twelve or so heads, some with round scarlet crests and some with with a long brown crest on each popped up from the long grass and looked at the visitors. Some honked in return. But none were more surprised than the Former Navy Seal. As some animals stood up on their hind legs to get a better look, Clint attempted to speak. “Th-tho-those are dinosaurs!” The young man laughed heartedly. “Something’s you need to see to believe! But enough of that! I’m sure you have plenty of questions! And Arty will answer them for you!”
As they drove back, Clint was doing his best to look for what he seemed to have been missing! Dinosaurs! Real live dinosaurs! How was this possible?! He needed answers and was very happy that he was on his way to getting them! “Those were some of the medium sized herbivores. We abbreviated all their names because most of us couldn’t pronounce them. But the long crest ones were Parasoralophus or 'Para’s’ and the round crests were Corythisaurus or 'Cory’s’ for short. You will be helping with these guys.” Clint was hardly listening. He just couldn’t swallow this news. “How is this possible?” Robbie heisted for a second then replied: “well arty will give you the full version but suffice it to say, we created them. On this island we breed them and take care of them.” “How many are there?” “Oh you only have seen one of the hadrosaur herds. We have about 20 different species on the island with the most in population being around 100. That would be these guys…” As he spoke a flock of little green chicken like lizards were passing the road in front of them. “'Compies’ are the garbage disposal of Isla Sorna. They get rid of feces and any unwanted matter. Even wanted matter like a sandwich that you accidentally set down for two seconds.” Clint looked at the young man, who answered annoyingly: “they can be jerks.” Clint just smiled.
As they pulled in front of the Operations Building Robbie turned to Clint. “Ok I need to run over to the Research lab on the north side of the island but you are in good hands! Arty will explain everything! See ya later pal!” And with that the young man pulled away. Clint turned and started walking up the stairs towards his new boss, and answers.
The Calm: The Island ch. 2
“There’s the LZ ‘Yeti’!” Yelled the Lieutenant. Over the roar of the Chopper blades, the only real way to even understand what he said was to read his lips. Clint Yates, or ‘Yeti’ as his friends called him, looked over and saw nothing but a smoke drenched beach in the predawn light. “It’s going to be one of those missions!” Yates thought to him self. It didn’t help that he was really tired from the “pre-mission poker game” last night! But now he tried to focus back on what his commanding officer was trying to say! “Ok boys! This is a simple exercise! We’ve done it a thousand times! We get in undetected, clear out the place, get the hostage and get out before the rooster crows! Johnson and Stamos I want you on point when we get to the beach! Yeti and I will clear out the insurgents in the bunker! QUIETLY this time!” He emphasized with a big grin! Yates rolled his eyes! “Like I said last time! I promise to no longer roar like a lion when I clear a bunker! SIR!” The whole Navy Seal team laughed at the inside joke! “Hey Clint we’re almost there!” “Wha-?” Clint woke with a start! Looking around seeing that he must have dozed off during the last stretch to the Island. It was still dark but the Stars had a glowing affect on the ocean at 2 in the morning! He gathered his stuff but stopped when he suddenly heard off in the distance an unearthly Roar as if hell let loose her worst nightmare! He looked to the others for an explanation but found none to give one. This annoyed Clint very much! He didn’t like being kept in the dark! Three weeks ago when he accepted this job it was the pay that got him in the end. He wasn’t too big of not knowing what he was “securing”. “Mr. Yates I assure you that what we have in mind for you will be more life changing than anything else you could do right now!” Assured the Ingen Recruitment agent Miles Lentworth. “Yeah I’ve heard that before!” Thought Clint. As the boat was nearing the shore, everyone made ready to disembark the craft. “Hey Greeny! Remember to keep yer hands ‘n feet inside the cars at all times! Or ya might loose ‘em!” Teased one of the workers, who laughed at his own joke. Clint was too tired to retort anything to the worker. Once on land Robbie told him that they were at the north docks named “Finger Bay”. “Because it looks like a finger from a map!” Explained the young man. As they all got into the jeeps, the dense dark Jungle loomed over them like fear itself! The former Seal wasn’t afraid but did feel a bit uneasy. There were animal sounds from every direction but for the life of him, he couldn’t figure what they were! “Are there any wild animals on this island?” Clint asked innocently. The men all stared at him, then at each-other, and then erupted into laughter! “Let’s put it this way man: you won’t be bored here! Lots and lots of 'wild’ excitement everywhere!” Replied a bald worker. He seemed friendly enough! He was obviously from the States. Late 40’s. He introduced himself as Freddie Stevens. “I’ll be working with you in Asset Security.” “Ok what are the 'Assets’? I’ve been kept in the dark since day one.” Clint asked. “It’s probably best if we show you. You might not believe us if we tell you.” He laughed softly. “Try me!” The soldier retorted. Clapping on to Clint’s shoulder, his new found friend chuckled, “you’ll see soon enough friend!” They all packed up and got into the 4 jeep Wranglers identical the one Clint and Robbie took from the Airport. The drive through the jungle was mostly uneventful except for one moment. As they passed over a bridge, the jeep in front of theirs stopped abruptly. Clint couldn’t see much, but when the jeep in front honked, he saw something large, tan and red, move from in front of the lead vehicle and with a honk louder than the jeep it slipped off into the vegetation. Bewildered as to what that could have possibly been, he turned to his tour guide of the evening, and asked what the hell that was! “Not entirely sure. It was probably one of the animals.” “Do you have elephants on this island?!” Clint asked sarcastically. “Haha well…” Laughed Robbie. The rest of the ride was uneventful. After about 20 minutes of driving, they arrived at the “Workers Village” as the sign to the heavily fenced in community of buildings read. Robbie pulled into the parking space of one of the small hut like buildings. “Ok this will be your bungalow. You will have plenty of room for your stuff and the bedding should be in there! Am I forgetting anything…” He looked around. “Oh yes! I will be here at 11 o'clock to pick you up to see Arty the island manager! He will explain everything tomorrow! G'night Clint!” And he drove off after that. The former soldier then put his stuff away stripped down to his shorts and climbed into a very welcoming bed! It had been a long day, and sleep welcomed him with in seconds.
The Calm: Fresh New Start ch. 1
CRASH!!! Clint winced. He looked behind him in the busy Costa Rican airport. It was just some kid that ran his bag into a potted plant. Clint half mused to himself, if he had done that, his father would have ripped him a new one right there! He heard over the loud ambiance of Spanish mixed with English: “YATES! LOOKING FOR A CLINT YATES!” He found the source of his name, a scrawny American boy probably in his late teens, early twenties, trying to see over the crowed. “So much for an experienced team.” Clint thought to himself. As he reached the young man, he made sure he had all he needed to leave. Wasn’t much just a dirty military duffle and an old baseball cap with the Stealers logo on it! “Are you Clint Yates?” “Yep. You from the island?” He could see the young man tense up a bit. “Absolutely! I’m here to help you get there! Get ready for the time of your life!” Clint thought he sensed a taste of sarcasm in the guys voice but didn’t lead into it.
As they headed out to the car, he got a good look at San Jose herself! It wasn’t unlike most cities he’s been in. Lots of noise and cars! “We’ll be driving this beauty!” Beauty was right! In front of them was a nice 1992 Jeep Wrangler in forest Green! On the door was a company insignia. The one that just hired him. Ingen. He hadn’t heard much about Ingen before they called him. There was a guy on the news that apparently lost his mind and blamed Ingen for it. Said they made… What was it? Like a large lizard or something? Yates just shook it off. He had seen enough insanity to last a life time. As they were driving west towards the sunset, the young man (who introduced himself as Robbie McFarland) seemed to be uncomfortable with silence, started up a conversation: “So how did you come to know about this job?” Slightly annoyed, Clint responded: “Well I was living in PA at the time they called me up. Said something about an exciting job that they need my expertise on. The money was right so I took it.” Robbie snickered at the word ‘exciting’, but then asked “your expertise?” “Look man I really don’t want to get too deep into my past, just know I was in the military until they kicked me out. I’m assuming that’s how they found me.” Robbie gave a low whistle. “Ex military? You should fit right in then. I think they could use you pretty well on ‘B’.” Clinton brows narrowed. ‘B’?
They reached the docks in Quepos by sundown, with a really nice Pacific sunset lighting up the night sky. They both got out of the car on to one of the ships there. An old transport ship that was used in the 80’s to carry tanks and other military vehicles for a land invasion. But there were no such weapons of war on it tonight. Unless you counted the former Navy-man stepping onto her deck. “Mr. Yates welcome aboard the S.S. Valkyrie! She’s not much but she gets us from point ‘A’ to point ‘B’!” Robbie grinned, then went to talk with one of the crew. As the night grew darker, he over heard a couple of crew members talking excitedly. He leaned in to listen with out looking like he was listening: “Yeah man all it took was one kick and Jose was a goner! He’s in San Jose hospital right now but who knows if he’ll make it!” “It was his own damn fault for leaving the door open! He knows the protocol! Anyway the new guy better learn quickly or he’ll be in the same boat! I hear he did some nasty stuff over seas! Like-” “Hey Yates! You hungry?!” Robbie yelled from the cabin door, interrupting the workers. Clint sighed very audibly and nodded yes. Walked over to the cabin and ate up. Truth was, he was very very hungry but wanted to continue eavesdropping! He had a weird fascination with what others thought of him. After about 2 and a half hours of dark sailing, Clint heard over the intercom in a very sarcastic tone: “ladies and gentlemen, if you look to the north west you will see the island of the Sun!” Clint looked in the direction said but couldn’t see much. Just a dark mass in the already deep blue sky. Then Robbie in the excitement of a boy said: “Welcome to Isla Sorna!”
