"I swear, you two are worse than a pair of unsupervised toddlers," you huffed. You were pulling a few shards of glass out of Steve's bicep. Bucky was no better, he sat shirtless next to his friend as some shotgun shrapnel was pushing its way out of his left pec; one thing you were grateful for when it came to that super soldier serum, self healing wounds helped out with having to patch the boys up. Steve ducked his head and smiled, "At least we didn't start it," he murmured, making both you and Bucky give him the look. "We both know that's a lie," Buck answered, making Steve look at him, pretending to be offended. You just chuckled as you taped a patch to Steve's arm, seeing how his cuts were already mending together. Out of all the Avengers, Steve and Bucky were mainly the only ones to get injured the most, but you had no problem with that. You were one of the youngest CIA members to retire early (marked RED) with training in espionage and combat, as well as a field medic, so a little blood never bothered you.
You shifted to Bucky, who was still sitting patiently. You looked closer at his bare chest and reached for one of your medical grade magnets, a little unorthodox, but when Bucky's or Steve's body pushed out foreign object, taking tweezers to it was often difficult and slippery. The tiny pellets stuck to the little metal bar, watching his chest flex at the sudden movements. After you got the superficial shrapnel out, you felt for any still under his skin. "Do you still feel anything in there that shouldn't be?" You asked, having him move his bionic arm and flex his muscles once more. "Nope. I think that's all." He hummed, picking at the bandage you placed on his forehead earlier. "You think?" You teased, reaching back and grabbing some salve as well as another alcohol swab and bigger bandage. Steve smirked when his friend blushed, fiddling his metal and flesh fingers together. "No, I'm sure," he chuckled. You smirked again, warning him it might sting as you cleaned up his wound, but he didn't flinch, he was still a bit desensitized by pain. Your gloved fingers gently smeared on a thin layer of the antibiotic ointment before lovingly sticking on the bandage, smiling to see his wounds already healing.
You pat Bucky on the knee before telling them both, "You're all set," "What? No kiss to make us feel better?" Steve teased. Bucky however whipped his head so fast to glare at his friend, he just knew his cheeks were crimson red. Luckily for him, you didn't notice as you rolled your eyes and pressed a kiss to the top of Steve's head. Bucky swallowed hard when you turned to him, his cheek was warm when you pressed your palm to it, leaning in and kissing the center of his forehead gently. Bucky's eyes closed for the briefest of moments, just having you so close made his heart ache, but you were gone too quickly. He did notice that you gently pinched his chin before you left the room, letting them change in peace.
"You're welcome," Steve interjected in a singsong voice. Buck softly huffed as he stood up from his chair, grabbing his second skin shirt. "Why would I be thanking you?" He asked, grabbing his black hoodie and dropping his shirt and jacket in the hamper. "C'mon Buck, I haven't seen you look at a girl like that since before you left for basic training, all those years ago. Did you forget I was your shadow?" Steve was right, ever since Shuri helped him in Wakanda, he really didn't pay much attention to girls. Not that he didn't like them anymore, but the thought of being in a relationship with someone was something that didn't interest him, until you came along. You were a breath of fresh air to him; when he heard there'd be a new agent to settle in the compound, he didn't expect someone as pretty and kind as you. You greeted everyone with a big hug and made an overall wonderful impression; he instantly liked you, and that 'like' only grew when he saw how feisty and fearless you were, he also got a kick out of your occasional foul mouth.
Bucky sighed and zipped his hoodie half way up, letting it fall open at this chest before tucking his hair into his hood and flipping it up. "I guess you're right… but I doubt she'd be interested in someone like me." He slid his hands in his pockets, suddenly feeling not good enough. "I think you're losing touch with that perception, bud. Do you really not see the way she looks at you?" Steve asked, untying his boots and thick belt. Bucky really must have missed, he sometimes became too caught up in his own thoughts. "I guess not," he hummed, smiling a little when Steve patted him on the back as they walked down the hall and into the common room. "Trust me. Just watch when you come down to dinner." He mused, watching Buck blush and nod, a few strands of hair falling out of his hood.
-----
Bucky lounged in his computer chair, his towel still around his waist, even though he showered two hours ago. He was lazily typing up the mission report Steve had started, easily getting sidetracked by Tumblr or YouTube. His eyebrow quirked when his email pinged, a new message from Tony. He opened the email, seeing it was an invitation to Tony and Pepper's Anniversary Party. He was only slightly confused, Tony and Pepper weren't married yet, but then again, Tony loved throwing parties because he could. It looked like a formal event at the Avenger's tower, he gulped at the theme "Love Is In The Air," it had to have been Pepper's idea. "Sergeant Barnes, dinner will be served in 10 minutes," F.R.I.D.A.Y. announced, making him jerk a little at the sudden noise. "Uh… thanks, F.R.I.D.A.Y." he muttered. "You're welcome. Apologies for disturbing you,"
Bucky yawned as he moseyed down to the kitchen, tucking his hair behind his ears just before he tucked his hands back in his joggers pockets. He walked in to see Steve and Sam bickering about whether or not the sauce was too spicy, Wanda and Vision were rinsing a big pot of noodles, and you? You were lovingly setting the kitchen island when you saw Bucky walk in. "Hey handsome!" You hummed, making a grabby hand motion at him with your free hand, and really, how could he not walk up to you and let you hug him? When you let go of each other, you gave him a once over, seeing the cut on his forehead was gone, and before he could properly answer, your hand was pressed over his heart, gently feeling his pec and where his skin met his *in your not so humble opinion* gorgeous metal arm. "All healed up, I guess?" You laughed, you let your fingertips linger a second or two too long, he immediately noticed. "Yeah, bandages came off in the shower." He blushed. You smiled and nodded, letting your fingers fall away, more specifically fall down to graze his abs and hip. You didn't see the way Buck looked at Steve, the younger man chuckling softly as he stirred the red sauce.
You all served yourselves and sat down, you conveniently sat next to Bucky, making sure to sit on his right side. The five of you slowly made small talk as you all began to eat: Sam bragging how he hardly got hurt on missions, Bucky reminding him that he's pulled him out of the air by his wing… twice, Wanda and you sharing recipes. All while Steve seemed content with his small family talking, even Vision put his two cents in every now and then. Once everyone was finished, you still remained in your chairs, still making idle conversation. You yawned slowly, which Bucky thought was adorable, before you tucked your leg under you and leaned into his muscular shoulder and bicep. Just as Bucky sighed quietly and let his head rest on top of yours, Sam smirked devilishly. "Hey, did anyone get Tony's email invitation?" Staring right at Bucky as he casually asked. Thankfully Wanda spoke up, "I did! It looks like a wonderful party. Y/N will you be going?" Bucky gulped, his metal hand unintentionally clenching. "Oh, I'm not sure. I really didn't look at my invitation." You hummed, nuzzling into Buck's arm again. "James? Will you go?" Wanda asked sweetly. He hoped you couldn't feel his body temperature rise. "Uhh… maybe. To be honest, I was surprised I even got an invitation. But… I'll think about it." He hummed. He glared at Sam who slowly opened his mouth. "You know, I think you two should--" "Ya know, I'm really tired all of the sudden. I think I'm gonna go to bed," Bucky interrupted, giving you a side hug and thanking Steve and Wanda for dinner. You watched him scurry out of the kitchen, side eyeing Sam as soon as Buck left the kitchen.
Of course Bucky lied about being tired, he snuck to the gym to tire himself out when he thought everyone had gone back to their respective rooms. His feet pounded on the treadmill, breathing hard, random thoughts running through his head: dating in the 21st century, Tony and Pepper's party, how not only Steve but Wanda and Sam knew he liked you. Perhaps going to this damn party would be good for him, but he certainly didn't want to go alone or with someone other than you… if you'd have him. The subject of you stuck in his brain as he hit the cool down botton, walking before fully coming to a stop. He sighed, tucking the loose hair from his ponytail behind his ears as he breathed heavily, wiping his face down with one of the many gym towels he grabbed. Slinging his damp tee shirt over his shoulder, he made his way back to his room, enjoying the cold AC his still sweaty skin.
He was lying on his bed, staring at his ceiling in the pitch darkness, his hair was still damp from when he rinsed off in the shower post workout. He bit his lip before murmuring, "F.R.I.D.A.Y.," "Yes, Sergeant Barnes." She replied in a hushed tone. "Can I ask you something?" He asked quietly. "Of course," He bit his lip in thought. "Do you think Y/N would go to Tony's party with me?" There was a beat of silence, making him a little nervous. "I have a calculated answer, but wouldn't you prefer Captain Rogers or Sam's opinion?" "I guess I'd prefer an educated guess than my friends teasing me," he muttered. "Well based on the many times she talks about you, I would say the chances of her saying yes are very high." She replied. A little smile tugged at his mouth. "Ok," he sighed happily. "Oh, and one more thing, Sergeant." His breath caught in his throat. "She speaks very highly of you." Now that made him smile. "Thank you, F.R.I.D.A.Y." "You're welcome, Sergeant Barnes." He rolled over and fell asleep, a gentle smile on his lips.

Several days passed and Bucky just became more and more nervous. It wasn't until you, he, and Sam came back from a mission, of course he needed some stitching up. He didn't seem too concerned as he applied pressure to the very large gash on his arm, but he admired how quickly you moved in your little medical exam room. You pushed your uniform sleeves up, washing your hands as quickly as possible before grabbing your supplies. He sat in his usual spot, taking his jacket off. Just as he slipped it off, you shook your can of anesthetic as well as some gauze. "Ok, this'll hurt," you warned. But Bucky just sat patiently as you sprayed him down and began stitching up his deep cut. You were so concentrated on your work, you hardly realized that he was staring at you. You were both beginning to relax when he softly asked, "So… are you going to the party?" You hummed, it was only two days away and you still really didn't decide. "Mmm… I'm not sure. I was thinking about it but…" You paused, and he waited for you to continue. "I mean, if I did go, I'd be alone, and no one really wants to be alone at a party, especially one dedicated to love."
He could see the sadness in your eyes, in all the time you were at the compound, you never mentioned being with someone, current or past. He often wondered if you had someone, and they passed away. He watched you subtly shake your head and hum, "What about you?" He looked away briefly as he answered. "Maybe… I'm like you, though. I'd rather go with someone I enjoy being with," His blue eyes flicked up to you. You were just finishing your last stitch when you stopped and looked him in the eye. "I guess I'm asking if you'll go with me," His eyes became wide with hope, and you gently bit your lip. He felt a weight being lifted off his chest when he saw you start to smile. "I'd love to, Bucky." He laughed for a moment, relieved. "Great!' he exclaimed, watching you blush as you finished your work. You wrapped his arm gently, smiling again when he coyly asked, "Don't I get a kiss to make it feel better?" You smiled and wedged yourself between his legs, leaning forward just slightly to kiss his cheek, just at the corner of his mouth. The tiniest gasp tumbled out when he felt your soft lips just barely brush his. It was his turn to turn pink as he stood from his little perch on your table. "Thank you, Y/N…" he muttered. His heart melted at your sweet smile. "You're welcome, Buck." He knew he was bright red now as he slowly walked out of the room.
---
He was pacing at this point, fidgeting with his tie as well as the white paperboard box, honestly, he was surprised his hair hadn't come out of his bun yet; hell he even shaved for you, but his five o'clock shadow still remained. "Jeez, Buck. You're acting like this is your first date ever." Steve hummed as he made his way into the common room. "But it is my first date… at least in this century." He gently snapped, tugging at his tie again. But Steve just shook his head, it was different having the roles reversed; back in the day, Steve was the one to get nervous and fidgety before a date, and Bucky was the calm and collected one. "Still can't believe you asked her," he hummed, approaching Bucky. "What makes this date so different?" He asked, moving Bucky's hands out of the way and helping his friend rearrange his tie again. "I'm not sure… I -- I think it's because…" He bit his lip, avoiding eye contact, but Steve was smart. "Do you love her?" Steve asked quietly. Before Bucky could respond, they both heard heels making their way down the hall to see you and Wanda walking next to one another. Steve slowly backed off just as Vision appeared next to them. Wanda was quite a sight in red, but you… you looked gorgeous.
He was glad he stuck with an all black suit, he secretly wanted to match you. Your dress hugged your curves perfectly, the slit on your left leg hitting just right on your thigh, revealing not too little and not too much. And your off the shoulder straps… he shivered at the subtle alluring illusion you achieved in such a dress. He almost missed how your hair was curled off your face, a red jewel clip holding it back. Holy shit, he thought. You smiled sweetly, and seeing the way he blushed, you were glad you decided to wear your blood red lipstick. "Hello, James." He visibly shivered, he hardly ever went by his first name, but in this case, he was perfectly fine with it. "Hi, Y/N." He whispered. "You look gorgeous," You touched his arm, as if to say, aww shucks.
"Oh! I -- I have something," he added, holding out the little box. You smirked, slowly opening the box to see beautiful red roses. "I know it looks weird, but I couldn't help getting you a corsage. Luckily they had one made that I can put on your wrist." He looked shy as he spoke, watching you pick up the little bundle of flowers as well as a boutonniere for his lapel. You took the box and placed it on the accent table next to you and pressed your corsage into his metal hand. "It's perfect, Bucky." You hummed, taking care to pin his boutonniere. Once you were done, you straightened his lapels slowly and ran your hands down his chest. He shivered again, not caring if you felt. He sweetly reached for your left hand and gently slipped it on your wrist. You both stood there, holding hands and looking into each other's eyes, not even noticing Sam, Steve, Wanda, and Vision looking at you.
Sam was the first to break the tension by clearing his throat. Bucky chuckled when he saw you jump for a moment before taking hold of his vibranium arm. "Well don't you two look nice! Such a cute couple too," you teased as Sam and Steve took a big step away from one another. "Very funny, Y/N. Natasha is meeting me there," Sam mused. "Sharon's also meeting me there too." Steve added. You nodded like you were unconvinced, making Bucky chuckle before F.R.I.D.A.Y. announced the limo had arrived.
You stayed by his side on the ride to the tower as well as making your way around the tower, making small talk with fellow party goers. You both finally made your way to the couple of the hour, Pepper greeting you with a hug and cheek kiss as Bucky and Tony stuck to the very informal head nod, before Pepper whisked you away to the head table. "Tinman, I never thought you'd have the nerve to ask out Doll Face," Tony mused as he and Bucky stayed at the bar. He watched you talk and laugh with Pepper and Natasha, sipping his scotch. "Yeah… Steve said something similar." Tony nodded at Bucky's answer, gently asking, "So when did you know?" Buck was silent for a moment before answering, "I think it was the first time I saw her. She was so different from the other dames I dated before I was drafted. There's no doubt that she's a strong woman… but the way she looks at me every now and then… makes me feel like she'd let me protect her for the rest of my days." He sighed happily as you showed off your corsage, looking absolutely adorable. "Sounds to me like you should hang on to her then," Tony patted Bucky's shoulder before approaching his fiance.
The night had continued wonderfully, aside from one thing: Bucky seemed awfully shy whenever you wanted to dance. But then the perfect song came on. You stood from your chair as Bucky ate the last little bit of his cupcake. "Come dance with me," He instantly looked flustered as he licked some vanilla frosting off his lip. "I -- I'm not sure, doll. It's been a while," he tried to reason. But as you brushed a few strands of hair behind his ear, he melted. "Please? It's an easy song to dance to." You asked him so sweetly, how could he ever say no? He stood and let you lead him to the dance floor. It was so easy for him to fall into this familiar position, pulling you close, his vibranium hand holding yours as his other hand rests on the small of your back. And happily out of habit, he ducks his head gently so you're cheek to cheek.
I get so lost inside your eyes
Would you believe it?
He begins to lead, gently swaying from side to side. He can hear you breathing slowly, your thumb running over his shoulder as you occasionally squeeze his metal fingers, not that he minds at all.
You don't have to say you love me
You don't have to say nothing
You don't have to say you're mine
But oh God, does he want you to say you're his. He feels you gently tuck your face into his neck and chest, hearing his heart race for you.
Honey
I'd walk through fire for you
Just let me adore you
His eyes close as he nuzzles into your hair, your perfume is intoxicating. He slowly turns his wrist, moving his hand to press yours to his chest, and his heart skips a beat when you splay your hand over his lapel, letting his metal hand cover yours, your fingers caressing the red rose pinned to his jacket.
You don't have to say you love me
I just wanna tell you something
Lately you've been on my mind
You sigh happily, holding onto Bucky, his warmth and the way he's holding you, making you feel safe and cozy. You have always liked him, but tonight… you had to tell him exactly how you felt. The both of you didn't realize the music changed, content in your own little bubble. It must have been another slow song as Bucky noticed Steve swaying with Sharon. Your hand shifted on his shoulder, pulling his focus back to you, his hand gripped the small of your back gently once more.
"Doll… I have something to tell you," he whispered into your hair. Your fingers gently scratched at the material of his jacket as you whispered back, "Tell me," You could hear his heart racing, his body starting to vibrate from nerves. "Y/N… I love you. I've loved you for a very long time. You're like my guardian angel, watching over me and healing me." You inhale slowly, taking in his words. "I don't know what I'd do without you. Because you bring me peace on my darkest days and you see me, exactly the way I used to see myself." He gently squeezes your hand, feeling you squeeze his metal digits back. "I'll understand if you don't feel the same, but I just needed you to know this before it ate me up."
He held his breath, waiting for you to say something, anything. You slowly pulled back to look at him, his gorgeous blue eyes full of worry; but you slid your hand from his chest to his cheek, pulling him down to kiss you. He was definitely caught off guard at first, but relaxed and kissed you back immediately, he once again covered your hand with his. You didn't stop the tiny moan slipping past your lips as he kissed you, his lips were so soft, and God, did he know exactly how to use them. By the time you parted ways, he still held you against his body, your lips just barely touching, both of you taking care to catch your breath. You gently pecked his lips before whispering your reply, "I love you as well, James."
He pressed his forehead against yours, sighing as a smile spread across his handsome face. You gripped his shoulder as well as his lapel, smiling back. "So… will you be my best girl?" His question was so sweet and so genuine, and really, how could you say no? He always treated you like a princess when you were friends, you knew it could only get better. "Of course I will. As long as you'll be my man," you teased. He blushed again, feeling his cheek warm up under your touch. "Oh, yes please." He muttered before kissing you again. He vowed to himself that he'd never let you slip through his fingers, he wanted you for so long. And happily for him, you wanted him just as bad.
