To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Lord of the Flies. The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of human psychology most of the jokes will go over a typical reader’s head. There’s also Jack’s selfish, insecurity-filled outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from the struggles of being an adolescent male, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of this book, to realise that it’s not just funny- it says something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Lord of the Flies truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn’t appreciate, for instance, the humour in Ralph’s existential catchphrase “Sucks to your ass-mar” which itself is a cryptic reference to the size of the overweight Piggy’s backside . I’m smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as William Golding’s genius wit unfolds itself in each chapter. What fools.. how I pity them. 😂
