Women of Hopscotch / @julienbaker / September 9th, 2016 What is the earliest memory you have of creating something you were proud of? “This poster board model of an atom with all the protons and neutrons and electrons correctly labeled. And I was so proud of it because I got to show it at show and tell. I spelled it all out. I was in kindergarten so people are at various stages of learning how to read and I was sitting there trying to explain what an electron was and then they brought me to the third grade class and made me explain it to the third graders and I thought like, “Oh, I’ve made something worthy, I’ve somehow had my intelligence validated as a small child.” But it was cool. I think, you know, it was one of those instances where people could have been like, “Why are you doing this extraneous activity or diverging from the curriculum?” There were teachers and adults around me that supported me and encouraged me in doing things in a kind of reinforced curiosity and gave credence to something I had made like it was important and it was valuable and that your curiosities were worth following.” photos by @morganmartinez / (cc: @6131records)
