what everyone forgets is that pb isn’t the indie girl blueprint. julien baker is. because julien is who pb wanted to be when she started properly releasing music. julien is who aaron dessner was listening to when he produced folklore. the rawness, the honesty, the confessional-style writing, the heartbreaking “sad girl” lyrics… it wasn’t pb. it was always julien. she is your favorite artist’s favorite artist. she just never wanted commercial success and never would’ve gotten it, because she’s a butch lesbian and an anti-capitalist. so people only saw what followed.

i was watching Julien Baker's Newport Folk Festival interview and thinking about how much i wish my sister knew about her before she died. they were very similar in many ways, and i think Bea would've really like her. then i remember that Bea knew Julien's grandma and there's a less-than-zero chance that she inevitably came up in conversation.

Mother Mary is pressed against my temple.

My head rests on the chest of my lover,

the rise and fall a soothing lull.

I used to be desperate for a feeling like this.

I searched for this warmth that fills me now

in ancient verses from behind a pulpit.

"We're all born sinners" they cried

but insisted redemption could be earned.

How much of my life had been spent

trying to feel forgiven enough?

How quickly did it all disappear

once I finally felt her embrace?

Some may say our love is wrong

but that God's love is within us

in the same heated breath.

As if those are antithetical.

If God lives within us,

then He was in was in her touch,

brushing the hair out of my face

with a tenderness I've never known.

I lift my head to gaze into her eyes.

Within their blue depths I see God,

the joy shining from beneath her lashes,

more clearly than in Sunday service.

There's an indentation left behind

and the impression feels like a blessing.

How could something so precious

be anything but holy?
