Andromeda let her prattle on for a while, nodding along to what she said while biting her tongue for as long as she could. Beyond being family, Andromeda was in no mind to respond to her rambling rubbish - her cousin was clearly upset, she had every right to be, and years of experience did allow for some patience to grow within the witch.
Yet whatever sympathy she felt for Alice evaporated the moment she mentioned her mother.Â
âNo, Alice, you need to be careful. Look at you! Not only are you babbling nonsense in the middle of a rather crowded street, but you also retorted with childish insults - how very grown up of you, indeed, to try to insult me. But by all means, keep making a fool of yourself by pretending to know what youâre talking about.â
Her judgmental eyes meant nothing to her - at least, not in regards to her relationship with Druella or the rest of her family. Andromeda made a choice indeed, different from hers, but a choice that had not come easy. Her choice broke every bit of peace she had; facing each and every consequence of her actions, every single day. But Andromeda did not owe any explanation or justification to her. Who the hell did Alice think she was? Scolding her as if she knew anything about her life anymore. Talking to her as if they knew of each otherâs secrets like they did before. Andromeda knew all to well she could not begin to understand, let alone judge, whatever Alice might be going through - she knew better than that by now, a lesson her cousin clearly never learned.Â
âWell, simple and childish spells are have their use. Do not diminish them. And do try to remain somewhat calm, will you? This type of outbursts only produce more stress, and that will only keep harming whatever progress you may be having.âÂ
"âBabbling nonsenseâ?â Alice repeated, affronted. âI beg your pardon?â She could feel her cheeks flushing, not with embarrassment but indignation. âSo itâs nonsense, is it, to want my privacy? Itâs nonsense, is it, to think that St. Mungoâs ought to keep a tighter reign on the personal details of its patients? I donât know what Iâm talking about, do I?â She couldnât believe Andromeda, couldnât remember her cousin being this thick before -- but then, she hadnât had much to do with any of the three Black sisters lately, and Andromeda had chosen to throw-off all of the progress she had once seemed to be making to retreat back to the comforting, confining safety of mummy and daddy. Clearly whatever lessons she had learned in school, she had chosen to forget.
âOr is it their personnel that St. Mungoâs needs to reexamine more than their procedures, I wonder?â Alice snapped nastily. âMaybe they ought to put more oversight into monitoring the dilettantes they hire. Idle hobbyists canât be expected to make the sort of effort that real employees do, not without someone babysitting them anyway.â It wasnât as if Andromeda needed her job; it was a hobby for a society lady like her, not proper employment. Was it any wonder that she didnât take it seriously? âPerhaps Iâll just mention that the next time Iâm in. I canât believe that the hospital governors take such a blasĂŠ attitude toward patient privacy -- and I know that news of a breach of security like this wouldnât go over well with the general populace, should the Prophet find out!â Petty threats were ordinarily beneath Alice, but there was nothing petty about this situation; she couldnât have her secret getting out into the world because Andromeda was sloppy, she just couldnât.
âYou need to be bloody well careful, cousin,â she reiterated, her voice dropping to a sharp whisper hissed between clenched teeth; she took a step closer to Andromeda so there was no chance of the other witch mishearing. âMaybe your little hobby doesnât seem to be of much import from your perspective inside the manor, but to the people whom you have taken responsibility for, itâs their lives on the line. You have taken responsibility. Grow up and start taking it seriously, or go home and stop pretending youâre a proper a Healer. You canât just...fiddle with something like that, no matter how much âfunâ you think it is to have people gushing over you when you get it right and make them better. Thereâs too much risk of you making it worse if you arenât taking it seriously.â Alice wasnât sure how to get through to her cousin; they had grown so apart. She had changed from the feckless, flighty girl she had once been; she understood what responsibility meant. She didnât think Andromeda ever would -- and why would she? Sheâd chosen to bury her head in the sands of their old family ideals, to hide from the reality of the world within the old walls of childhood. Alice should have known better than to let Andromeda anywhere near her medical treatment -- but she had foolishly thought that a familiar face would be comforting. Ha!
âIf you want me to be calm,â she snarled, âstop acting like a condescending twit and start listening to me! You arenât your mother and Iâm not a child. Donât talk to me like I am, especially not when youâre the one in the wrong. Open your damn eyes for once in your life, Andromeda!â
