“Oh boy,” Joe said when he opened the front door with a periwinkle muslin burping blanket slung over his shoulder and found a smiling Paul on the other side. “What are you doing here, brother?”

“I’m here to play interference to the Strand Marwani Cabal,” he said with a knowing smirk.

His presence was announced through squeal, that of one Jonah Strand Reyes the second he noticed his favorite uncle was standing in the doorway. 

“What’s up little man?” Paul offered Jonah a high five in the entryway, scooping him up and slinging him over his shoulder like the world’s squirmiest, giggliest backpack on his way into the house while Jonah dissolved into helpless giggles against his back.

“Paul?” Marjan asked, surprised eyes looking up at him from the floor where she was wrestling a wriggling baby Yara into a tiny yellow onesie with the Austin City Limits logo on it. A gift from Uncle Paul. TK was holding Yara’s hands, placing little kisses to the tiny tips of her fingers, while Marjan clasped the buttons at the bottom.

“Yeah,” he said, depositing Jonah on the nearest accent chair. Jonah immediately sprang back up, attempting to climb Paul like a jungle gym. “Did you think Carlos wouldn’t call in backup?”

“Backup?” TK swallowed.

Paul already had his phone out, reading: “Please keep my husband and Marjan from doing anything–” he glanced down at Jonah, staring back at him with big eyes. “S-T-U-P-I-D.”

Guys I'm alive and actually have something to post. It's a genuine miracle. (Ignore that I wrote this not even 5 minutes ago) Thank you for the tags @actuallylemon and @carlos-in-glasses!

“Alright! See you later, and if you can, can you bring me a coffee?” “You're demanding a lot of a person who woke up not even five minutes ago Tim.” “Cool. Remember it's almond milk, not cow's milk. Bye!” The phone clicked as he hung up. “I piss off your sensitive stomach once and four years later…” She muttered before looking in the mirror."

“That’ll be Marjan,” TK says automatically.

He had a feeling after lunch that she wouldn’t be able to let Sofia go. It’s a tough one for her to shake, he knows, a woman of color going missing from the middle of downtown Austin.

TK’s barely been able to stop thinking about her either. He got a brief reprieve on the drive home from Marjan’s, too distracted by Jonah playing backseat driver and DJ to think about literally anything else.

Then there were bulldozers and dump trucks in the backyard sandbox, chasing Jonah around while he “helped” water the plants with the garden hose, trying to keep him from completely drowning the orange trees and Carlos’s herb garden. Barely stopping him from drinking whatever it was that’s pooling in a mystery puddle in the corner of the yard.

All before Carlos got home and they worked as a little team of three to make dinner — stuffed peppers with asparagus and Carlos’s signature thick Texas toast.

And now Carlos sits on the couch, absently scrolling through something on his iPad while Jonah snoozes in his lap, his little face buried against Papa’s warm chest. They’d brought him downstairs for storytime and cuddles after his bath, and Carlos is always reluctant to bring a sleeping Jonah back to bed when he can hold him a bit longer, kiss his little head and run a hand through his still-damp hair. It’s left a dark patch on Carlos’s gray T-shirt but he doesn’t seem to mind.

“How do you know?”

“Three texts in under ten seconds,” TK chuckles.

Carlos hums a laugh.

“Fair.”

I would not want to be married to anyone I didn't regard as a friend for one, and for two that I didn't want to ride until the bed broke off the hinges.
