From a young age, Rentarou was fascinated by fantasy stories, especially one in particular called "Jack and the Beanstalk."
Although he had a different perspective on the story. He liked to contradict it time and time again.

"No matter how hard you try! If your goals are beyond the sky, then you're crazy. It's not even worth trying!!"
Little Rentarou talked to himself, while his mother barely dared to look at him.
"Keke, I'm going to separate from your father."
Rentarou clutched the pages of his book tightly. His mother had always been a born dreamer.
REN-Keke's Story!
Rentarou (or better known as "Keke") had to cope with major changes in his life from a young age. His parents' separation wouldn't have been such a big deal if his mother hadn't been unfaithful to his father. Keke genuinely doesn't remember much from that time. He simply remembers his older brother being angry and fighting with both parents almost every day after they finally got divorced.
His mother was left with practically nothing, and only his older brother agreed to stay with their father. If you ask Keke, he honestly doesn't remember when he first started going to wash his clothes in the river, because he realized there wasn't enough money for everyone.
Rentarou got used to his mother's girlfriend's presence quite quickly. It didn't really bother him, but remembering his brother being so upset with "Hikari" had a negative effect on Keke in the long run.
Even so, he couldn't refuse to live with his new mother, no matter how much trouble it caused him with his father and brother. Especially since Hikari was the one who introduced him to what would become his salvation:
playing the piano.
Hikari sometimes couldn't control the arguments between Rentarou's parents, so she would simply lock the siblings in a room and teach them the basics as a former music teacher would teach two scared children.
Eventually, Rentarou simply started playing for fun and because there was no point in arguing about whether beans could touch the sky or not.
Keke was determined to attend school to study botany. He had been obsessed with plants practically since childhood, but… his desire was thwarted by his talent.
Hikari saw potential in Keke and mentioned it to Homura time and again. She thought she was doing him a favor, since he never told anyone about his interests.
What they didn't know was that Keke had been saving for a long time to pay for his studies; he had practically been saving his whole life to fulfill his dream.
Unfortunately, everything changed one day when his mother surprised him with a little “gift”
“Keke, I know you really like the piano...”
“Yes, Mom, I like it, but it’s just a hob-”
“That’s why I decided to enroll you in this arts college! So your talent doesn’t just stay a hobby. I want you to achieve your dreams, even the ones that reach beyond the clouds, son.”
Keke honestly didn’t know what to do or say. All his effort had vanished in a matter of… how long? Seconds?
"..."
Even so, he reluctantly agreed. He knew his mother was a good person, but… she had always been a dreamer. It was almost impossible for him to have a conversation with her, especially since in recent years all the money had been going to lawyers or her health.

And that’s how it happened: from one moment to the next, Keke found himself in front of one of the best art universities in the world. If he didn’t already feel like he belonged, this didn’t make him feel any better. He must be the only one who didn’t truly feel a total passion for music.
