What I had once mistaken for death was, instead, a door.
Rachel McKibbens, from “the second time,” published in Vinyl (via lifeinpoetry)
But that’s the weird thing about grief. You can’t prepare for it. You think you’re gonna cry and get it over with. You make those plans, but they never work.”
Liam Neeson
I shut down to protect myself.

employer: so how do you like working here!
me:
Solitude has soft, silky hands, but with strong fingers it grasps the heart and makes it ache with sorrow.
Khalil Gibran, The Broken Wings (via wordsnquotes)
Feeling metaphorical tonight, so you'll have to bear with me for a moment before I get to the point. I remember one day in middle school, I was at the farm with a group of the other boarders/riders. We were in the indoor arena working on some new trust exercises that involved letting one horse at a time roam free; the owner would urge the horse to them, and the rest of us would wave our arms or otherwise shoo them away from us. At one point, I urged one of the horses away from me, but he was trying to avoid someone else as well, so his only option was to run toward the corner. When he was there, he panicked and started kicking out behind him - I just saw hooves flying toward my face, and luckily backed away before getting hit. That was the day that I learned you must always be careful not to back a wild animal into a corner, because they will fight their way free. What I'm getting at is this: if you back someone into a corner, be it an animal or a human, you need to understand that they will do whatever it takes to find their way out and find their way to safety. Whatever it takes. So when you knowingly back someone into a corner, you better be prepared for the fight.
The fact of the matter is, were it possible to erase myself from everyone else's mind and prevent them from hurting, I would be gone.

Home for the holidays, but apparently I don't actually get family time because my family is doing everything BUT spending time with me. Remind me why the hell I made the 12 hour trip home?
I'm in my room eating M&Ms and my cat was staring at me so I put a couple of treats on my bed (he's really, really fat so I try to trick him into exercising) and he tried to knock them off the bed toward himself but couldn't, so rather than jumping up on the bed he just sat there staring sadly at them and I have never related to an animal more in my life

i’m sorry i forget how to be a good friend sometimes. it’s dark where i am and i can’t breathe but i swear i love you even when it’s so bad that i can’t recognize myself in the mirror. i’m sorry that i don’t laugh at your jokes like i mean it, i’m sorry i can’t focus, i’m sorry that sometimes you look over and i’m frowning. i don’t mean any of it. just give me time. i’m trying to find my way back into my body but i’ve been lost for a while. i know you deserve better. please, if you can, just be patient.

The thing I hate most about depression is that it tricks you into thinking you don’t have depression. It makes you think that nothing is wrong with you, that you just feel this way because you lack value as a person. Whether that’s in your relationships, your academics, or a view of yourself, it makes you think you aren’t good enough for any of that.
“It’s not the illness,” it says, “You feel this way because it’s who you are.”
“Mental illness is like fighting a war where the enemy’s strategy is to convince you that the war isn’t actually happening.”
